Laser Wavelength Shift from Splitters and Switches

The Detonation Science and Technology Group (Q-6) operates several photon Doppler velocimetry (PDV) systems as a diagnostic tool for measuring velocities in the 1–10 km/s range during high explosive (HE) detonation experiments. Q-6 uses “heterodyne” PDV systems that are produced by Traverse Solutions and Instrumentation, LLC (TS&I). These heterodyne systems combine wavelength (WL) tunable source and “reference” lasers with a WL offset of 10–100 pm from each other. Properly setting the source and reference WLs for an experiment can be critical for collecting the desired experimental data. The tunable lasers report WL readings in their control software, but these readings are based on a lookup table from a temperature reading and are not able to be calibrated. Therefore, recent test fire programs that require PDV as a diagnostic have also implemented requirements for monitoring the WL of the tunable lasers using a precision WL meter. To monitor the WL of several PDV lasers without disconnecting any patch fibers form the experimental setup, Q-6 developed a system splitters with a coupling ratio (%) of 99:1 and an optical switch with the switch output going to a single WL meter. A brief experiment was developed to determine if the splitters and/or switch introduced any WL bias into the readings. The purpose of this report is to document the system, the experiment, and its results.

Shifting from Fossil Fuel Reliance to Green Energy Sovereignty: Ute Mountain Ute Tribe

Self-determination has been an on-going effort for Native American people and gained much traction with the passing of The Energy Policy Act of 2005, which included the Indian Tribal Energy Development and Self-Determination Act. Congress passed this act to assist Native American tribes and Alaska Native villages with planning, development, and assistance to achieve their energy goals. The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe (UMUT) has relied on oil and natural gas for economic support the last 70 years. Burning fossil fuels, along with oil and gas development, decreases the quality of air and leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Subsequently, the burning of fossil fuels to produce energy is now more costly than many renewable energy sources, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Environmental stewardship, along with the need to maintain revenue generation, has led UMUT’s efforts to achieve energy self-determinism employing PV and exploring other technology. In the past, the tribe completed a 1 megawatt PV project near Towaoc, Colorado, which serves as a case study on the tribe’s energy goals: a future where renewables will dominate their energy landscape. This paper explores UMUT’s past and on-going efforts toward energy independence and how it relates to the broader landscape of Native American energy sovereignty.

Developing an In-situ Formed Dynamic Protection Layer to Mitigate Lithium Interface Shifting: Preventing Dendrite Formation on Metallic Lithium Surface to Facilitate Long Cycle Life of Lithium Solid-State Batteries

After extensive research on various system, a fully lithiated Si anode material (Li 3.75 Si) was synthesized. The high energy density, long cycle life anode demonstrated no apparent dendrite growth in an all-solid-state Li battery. A flexible solid-state electrolyte film with a thickness less than 50 μm was developed. All-solid-state Li full batteries were built and tested with NMC811, organic, organosulfide and sulfur cathode. Energy density of 1140 Wh/Kg at material level and 376 Wh/Kg at electrode level were demonstrated for over 500 cycles and with no apparent dendrite formation on the Li anode.

The Wavelength Shifting Plate on the LEGEND Experiment

Majorana-type neutrinos lead to a neutrinoless double beta decay with the emission of only two electrons. (Lepton Number Violation). LEGEND experiment is proposed to search for this transition from ⁷⁶Ge to ⁷⁶Se. The goal is to reach the half-life sensitivity of about 10²⁸ years in a 5 kton٠year exposure of a detector with 1 ton of isotopic ⁷⁶Ge mass.

Parallel Time Integration: An Approaching Paradigm Shift for Scientific Computing

This note argues that parallel-in-time methods will be necessary for doing high-fidelity time-dependent simulations in the future. A “proof” is given to support the argument and to provide a framework for debate. The effect of a parallel-in-time paradigm on scientific computing practice is also discussed.

A Laboratory Comparison of a Nephelometer and the Cavity-Attenuated Phase Shift Instrument (CAPS)

The interaction of incoming solar radiation (light) with particulate matter in the atmosphere impacts Earth’s radiation budget and thus is of great importance to climate and climate change. This particulate matter consists of particles, an aerosol referring to the ensemble of these particles. All particles scatter incoming solar radiation, sending some of it back to space and providing a cooling influence on the climate. Some particles additionally absorb incoming solar radiation, causing the particle, and the surrounding atmosphere, to heat, and thus altering atmospheric stability and evaporating water and other substances in the particles, which in turn affect the scattering and absorption of light by the particle.
