An introduction to shuttle/LDEF retrieval operations: The R-bar approach option

Simulated orbiter direct approaches during long duration exposure facility (LDEF) retrieval operations reveal that the resultant orbiter jet plume fields can significantly disturb LDEF. An alternate approach technique which utilizes orbital mechanics forces in lieu of jets to brake the final orbiter/LDEF relative motion during the final approach, is described. Topics discussed include: rendezvous operations from the terminal phase initiation burn through braking at some standoff distance from LDEF, pilot and copilot activities, the cockpit instrumentation employed, and a convenient coordinate frame for studying the relative motion between two orbiting bodies. The basic equations of motion for operating on the LDEF radius vector are introduced. Practical considerations of implementing an R-bar approach, namely, orbiter/LDEF relative state uncertainties and orbiter control system limitations are explored. A possible R-bar approach strategy is developed and demonstrated.

A tutorial introduction to Very Long Base-line Interferometry (VLBI) using bandwidth synthesis

The basic principles underlying very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) are described by using bandwidth synthesis. The basic signal processing approach is detailed. Summarized results show the tradeoff of measurement accuracy with spanned bandwidth, source strength, antenna size and efficiency, system noise temperature, and data volume. Minimization of required antenna time for a given baseline measurement accuracy is also discussed.

Making aerospace technology work for the automotive industry - Introduction

In many cases it has been found that advances made in one technical field can contribute to other fields. An investigation is in this connection conducted concerning subjects from contemporary NASA programs and projects which might have relevance and potential usefulness to the automotive industry. Examples regarding aerospace developments which have been utilized by the automotive industry are related to electronic design, computer systems, quality control experience, a NASA combustion scanner and television display, exhaust gas analyzers, and a device for suppressing noise propagated through ducts. Projects undertaken by NASA's center for propulsion and power research are examined with respect to their value for the automotive industry. As a result of some of these projects, a gas turbine engine and a Stirling engine might each become a possible alternative to the conventional spark ignition engine.

The University of Colorado OSO-8 spectrometer experiment. I - Introduction and optical design considerations

The optical design of the high-resolution ultraviolet spectrometer prepared for the OSO-8 spacecraft is discussed. The instrument is a conventional 1 m Ebert-Fastie spectrometer fed by a Cassegrainian telescope. The instrument operates in the spectral range 1200-2000 A with spectral resolution of order 0.02 A. Spatial resolution is about 2.5 arcsec normal to the direction of the slit and is selectable from about 3 arcsec to 15 arcmin along the direction of the slit. Time resolution for the single spectrometer channel is selectable according to the needs of an individual observation and is limited to a maximum sampling rate of 40 ms per data point. The instrument is controlled by an internal general purpose computer.

Planning for airport access: An analysis of the San Francisco Bay area. Introduction and conclusions

The problems of airport access are examined and recommendations are made based on current transportation availability, public costs, and future transportation demand. Major conclusions presented include: (1) access must be considered in the contex of the overall urban transportation system, (2) expensive and inflexible travel modes designed primarily for airport access are not justifiable, (3) VTOL and STOL are presently too expensive for large-scale commercial use, and (4) the automobile will continue to be the predominant access mode in the future.

NASTRAN hydroelastic modal studies. Volume 1: Introduction, theory, and results

The implementation of a general three-dimensional hydroelastic capability in the NASTRAN computer program is described. A method for analyzing the combined mode shapes of arbitrary fluid and structure finite element models was developed. The fluid was modeled with three-dimensional solid elements with options for tetrahedron, wedge, and hexahedron shapes. The elements were then connected to fluid grid points which defined the pressure in the fluid at the specified location. Matrices were formulated to provide efficient solutions for large-order problems. The structure matrices were processed separately and could be reduced using matrix condensation procedures or through a modal formulation using the normal modes of the empty structure as solution coordinates. The fluid/structure interface and the free surface were defined by the user with special NASTRAN boundary elements. A special purpose mesh generator program was provided to generate the actual NASTRAN data cards for the fluid, the structure, and the boundary elements for typical tank-type models.
