Transient Stability Enhancement via a Scalable RL Method with VSG Parameter Tuning

This paper presents a reinforcement learning (RL)-driven strategy to improve the transient stability of power systems via tuning parameters of multiple virtual synchronous generators (VSGs). We proposed a scalable method to support RL training convergence probability and speed, even when a large number of contingencies are considered. The proposed scalable RL framework first decomposes the large number of contingencies into multiple groups and then conducts parallel training for each group, decreasing the state space and complexity of each training. Additionally, we propose a contingency grouping algorithm to streamline the RL action space and facilitate the training. The proposed method is validated across various standard test systems.

Refinement and Modeling of a Blackbody-Based Calibration Method in the InfraBREAD Detector

The Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD) is an ongoing collaboration searching for the conversion of yet undiscovered axion-like dark matter particles to photons in the presence of a magnetic field. InfraBREAD, an experiment of BREAD, uses a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD), a high-efficiency and low-noise device, to specifically detect infrared-range photons produced by $\mathcal{O}$(eV) axion-like particles. The unique BREAD reflector setup allows for the focusing of converted signal photons to a 1mm $\times$ 1mm SNSPD. However, when the detector is cooled to cryogenic temperatures during operation, uneven thermal contraction of reflector components may lead to a small shift in the location of the focal spot. A novel calibration method using blackbody radiation is proposed to locate the true focal spot of the detector \textit{in situ}. Through ray tracing simulations done in FRED Optical Engineering Software, this method is demonstrated to locate the focus to within $\SI{50}{\micro\metre}$ in the $z$ dimension.

A Method for Producing Hierarchical and Statistically Calibrated Predictions of Nuclear Material Properties from Existing Models

Computer vision-based analysis of micrographs of nuclear materials is an emerging technique for property prediction, synthetic route identification, and other material analysis tasks. These analysis tasks play a pivotal role in many material characterization applications such as signature development for treaty verification, process optimization, etc. The backbone in many of the recent computer vision-based techniques is a deep learning model, which takes a fixed-size set of pixels and provides a class prediction for that set of pixels. For example, previous work developed a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the synthetic route from a 256 px x 256 px patch taken from a larger image of uranium ore concentrates. In this work, we present several methods for first calibrating these models in a manner that they can provide accurate probabilities of their predictions’ veracity, and several methods of combining these probabilities. Overall, the combination of these two steps into a pipeline allows for full-image and even full-sample (where a sample has many images) predictions with associated confidence values. Finally, we show that one can also use the patch predictions and confidence to produce a visualization to map predicted constituents through the image. Results and examples for predicting and mapping uranium ore concentrates’ synthetic process from imagery will be presented.

Hybridized Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics

Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods hold promise for any applications with significant advection character, including thermal hydraulics in light water reactors and advanced reactor concepts and fluid models of plasmas in magnetic confinement fusion. Its features include natural upwinding, local element conservation, and extensibility to arbitrarily high order accuracy. In the last fiscal year we have implemented HDG in the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). We developed a first-of-its-kind automatic static condensation system in MOOSE’s underlying finite element library libMesh which can condense out arbitrarily many internal variables. Finally, we developed the first preconditioner for HDG discretizations of the Navier-Stokes equations which shows robust performance across a wide range of problem sizes and Reynolds numbers. This preconditioner yields solution times that are equivalent to the fastest developed for industry standard finite volume methods. Moreover, the arbitrarily high-order nature of HDG makes it a prime candidate for acceleration via graphical processing units (GPUs). We believe these developments will hold significant importance for future DOE Nuclear Energy (NE) and Fusion Energy Science (FES) programs.

Modeling and Proof-of-Concept of a Blackbody-Based Calibration Method in the InfraBREAD Detector

The Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD) is an ongoing collaboration searching for the conversion of yet undiscovered axion-like dark matter particles to photons in the presence of a magnetic field. InfraBREAD, a pilot experiment realization of BREAD, uses a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD), a high-efficiency and low-noise device, to specifically detect infrared-range photons produced by $\mathcal{O}$(eV) axion-like particles. The unique BREAD coaxial reflector setup allows for the focusing of converted signal photons to a 1mm $\times$ 1mm SNSPD. However, when the detector is cooled to cryogenic temperatures during operation, uneven thermal contraction of reflector components may lead to a small shift in the location of the focal spot. A novel calibration method using blackbody radiation is proposed to locate the true focal spot of the detector \textit{in situ}. Through ray tracing simulations done in FRED Optical Engineering Software, this method is demonstrated to locate the focus to within $\SI{50}{\micro\metre}$ in the axial dimension. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the blackbody photon source used in this calibration must be at a temperature of at least $\SI{15}{\kelvin}$ to $\SI{40}{\kelvin}$, depending on the sensitivity of the SNSPD.

Precision Measurements of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor to High Momentum Transfer using Durand’s Method

Protons and neutrons, collectively known as nucleons, along with electrons, constitute the fundamental building blocks of the visible universe. Understanding their internal structure is crucial for addressing key scientific questions about our origin and existence. Elastic electron-nucleon scattering provides insights into the spatial distributions of charge and current within nucleons through their electromagnetic form factors. Accurate knowledge of these form factors over a broad range of Q2, the squared four-momentum transfer in the scattering process, reveals details about the nucleon's internal structure. However, high-Q2 data of the nucleon electromagnetic form factor is scarce due to the challenges associated with such measurements. This thesis reports preliminary results from high-precision measurements of the neutron magnetic form factor (GMn) to unprecedented Q2 using Durand's method, also known as the "ratio" method. Systematic errors are greatly reduced by ext

Innovative Joining Method for Hybrid Composites with Tailored Performance

In various industries, such as renewables and aerospace, the demand for carbon fiber is rapidly growing to meet the requirements of high-performance applications with optimized designs. Traditionally, these optimized designs have been limited to single-material composites due to process constraints. However, this study aims to explore the feasibility of transitioning between two different fiber types for pultrusion and filament winding processes, thereby enhancing design flexibility, and optimizing performance. This research introduces a novel method of hybrid reinforcement through splicing techniques. By employing a splicing method, fibers are merged prior to infusion, resulting in a transition of higher strength compared to traditional joints. Moreover, this technique enables the creation of composites with variable compositions, allowing for the selective placement of properties in a process previously characterized by static properties. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties of dry fiber splicing and its impact on the resulting composite material. Through comprehensive analysis, we aim to provide insights into the feasibility and advantages of employing this innovative splicing technique in composite manufacturing processes.

Anion exchange membrane and methods of making and using the same

Anion exchange membrane and methods of making and using the same. In one embodiment, the anion exchange membrane may be made by a method that includes a two-step polymerization. In the first step, an α-olefin monomer containing a pendant halide, such as 8-bromo-1-octene, may be polymerized by Ziegler-Natta polymerization to form a first polymer portion, the first polymer portion being a homopolymer. In the second step, the polymerization is charged with a non-functionalized α-olefin monomer, such as ethylene, thereby forming a second polymer portion, the second polymer being a copolymer made up predominantly of the non-functionalized olefin monomer. If desired, a small amount of an α-olefin monomer containing a crosslinking functionality may be included in the first and/or second steps. Following the two-step polymerization, the polymer is fabricated into a thin film. Thereafter, the thin film may be functionalized by replacing the pendant halides with pendant cations.
