Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Physical structure of constitutional isomers influences antiproliferation activity of thiosemicarbazone-alkylthiocarbamate copper complexes

A series of hybrid thiosemicarbazone-alkylthiocarbamate copper complexes with similar electronic environments but distinct physical structures have been prepared, characterized, and evaluated for antiproliferation activity. The complexes include the constitutional isomers (1-phenylpropane-1-imine-(O-ethylthiocarbamato)-2-one-(N-methylthiosemicarbazonato))copper(II) (CuL 1 ) and (1-phenylpropane-1-one-(N-methylthiosemicarbazonato)-2-imine-(O-ethylthiocarbamato))copper(II) (CuL 2 ) along with (1-propane-1-imine-(O-ethylthiocarbamato)-2-one-(N-methylthiosemicarbazonato))copper(II) (CuL 3 ). Complexes CuL 1 and CuL 2 differ in the positions of the pendent thiosemicarbazone (TSC) and alkylthiocarbamate (ATC) moieties on the 1-phenylpropane backbone. Complex CuL 3 employs a propane backbone with the TSC in the 2-position as in CuL 1 . The isomer pair CuL 1 and CuL 2 have equivalent electronic environments with indistinguishable Cu II/I potentials (E 1/2 = -0.86 V vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra (g ∥ = 2.26, g ⊥ = 2.08). The electronic structure of CuL 3 has a similar E 1/2 of -0.84 V and identical EPR parameters to CuL 1, 2 . Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirm a consistent donor environment with no substantial variation in the Cusingle bondN or Cusingle bondS bond distances and angles between the complexes. The antiproliferation activities of the CuL 1–3 were evaluated against the lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549) and nonmalignant lung fibroblast cell line (IMR-90) using the MTT assay. CuL 1 had the highest A549 activity ( A549 EC 50 = 0.065 μM) and selectivity ( IMR-90 EC 50 / A549 EC 50 = 20). The constitutional isomer CuL 2 displayed decreased A549 activity (0.18 μM) and selectivity (10.6). The complex CuL 3 displayed activity (0.009 μM) similar to CuL 1 but with a lack of selectivity (1.0). Cellular copper loading determined by ICP-MS was consistent with the activity and selectivity trends. The complexes CuL 1–3 did not induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation.

A Series of F-Element Chelators; Diaza Crown Ethers Functionalized with Catecholate Binding Substituents

Here, we report on the preparation of azacrown ethers functionalized with catechol groups. The synthetic approach was (1st) novel in that it made use of the Mannich reaction and (2nd) valuable in that it provided an improved synthesis (in terms of practical deployment) of the known N,N'-bis(2,3-dihydroxybenzyl)-4,13-diaza-18-crown-6, H 4 ChaCha. Moreover, it demonstrated potential application of the synthetic method for accommodating a wide range of catecholate functionalities by using the synthetic strategy to prepare N,N'-bis(2,3-dihydroxy-5-tert-butylbenzyl)-4,13-diaza-18-crown-6 (H 4 t Bu 2 ChaCha) for the first time. These H 4 ChaCha and H 4 t Bu2ChaCha macrocycles offer exciting opportunity to expand redox chemistry for the f-elements. As “proof-of-principle,” we isolated the unusual tetrameric cluster [La 2 ( t BuChaCha) 2 ] 2 from reactions between H 4 t Bu 2 ChaCha and La[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] 3 . Characterization of [La 2 ( t BuChaCha) 2 ] 2 by elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, and UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy suggested that the complex represented a rare example of an f-element semiquinone. It further demonstrated that the combination of La 3+ and H 4 t Bu 2 ChaCha provided access to one-electron oxidation chemistry within redox potential windows that were amenable to mild reaction conditions.

High-Performance Thermoelectrics from Cellular Nanostructured Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6

We introduce Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 as a high-performance thermoelectric material. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 has a layered twodimensional structure with Sb 3+ cations and [Si 2 Te 6 ] 6- units as building blocks adopting the Fe 2 P 2 Se 6 structure type. Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 is a direct-band-gap semiconductor with valence-band maximum and conduction-band minimum at the Z point in the Brillouin zone, where the band is doubly degenerate. Polycrystalline bulk pellets of Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 with randomly packed grains exhibit an intrinsically high thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of ~1.08 at 823 K. We then create a cellular nanostructure with ultrathin Si 2 Te 3 nanosheets covering the Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 grains, which act as a hole-transmitting electron-blocking filter and at the same time cause extra phonon scattering. Lastly, this dual function of the cellular nanostructure achieves an ultralow thermal conductivity value of ~0.29 Wm -1 K -1 and a high ZT value of ~1.65 at 823 K for Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 , along with a high average ZT value of ~0.98.

Three new metal coordination complexes, namely, [Co(BPO){sub 2}(H{sub 2}O){sub 4}](BS){sub 2}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2} (1), [Co(BPO){sub 2}(H{sub 2}O){sub 4}](ABS){sub 2}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2} (2), [Co(BPO){sub 2}(H{sub 2}O){sub 4}](MBS){sub 2}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2} (3) [BPO=2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, BS=benzenesulphonate, ABS=4-aminobenzenesulphonate, MBS=4-methylbenzenesulphonate] were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Complexes 1–3 were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). All of them display a zero-dimensional motif, in which strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions (O–H···O/N) and packing interactions (C–H···π and π···π) make them achieve a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The primary catalytic results of these three complexes show that high efficiency for the green synthesis of a variety of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones was observed under solvent free conditions through Biginelli reactions. The present catalytic protocols exhibit advantages such as excellent yield, easy isolation, eco-friendly conditions, and short reaction time. - Graphical abstract: Three new metal coordination complexes with bipyridinyl-oxadiazole were obtained under hydrothermal conditions, which display a zero-dimensional motif, and show high efficiency for the green synthesis of a variety of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones under solvent free conditions through Biginelli reactions. Solvent-mediated secondary building units (SBUs) diversification in a series of Mn{sup II}-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)

The role of auxiliary solvents in the formation of MOFs has been investigated for a series of Mn{sup II}-based framework systems. Reactions of 4,4′,4″-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H{sub 3}L) with Mn{sup II} through varying auxiliary solvents of the medium resulted in the formation of diversified multinuclear Mn{sup II} subunits in four new coordination polymers: [Mn{sub 3}(L)(HCOO){sub 3}(DEF){sub 3}] (1), [Mn{sub 3}(L){sub 2}(EtOH){sub 2}]·DMF (2), [Mn{sub 5}(L){sub 4}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2}]·2(H{sub 2}NMe{sub 2}){sup +}·4DMF·2H{sub 2}O (3), and [Mn{sub 3}(L){sub 2}(py){sub 4}(H{sub 2}O)]·H{sub 2}O (4) (H{sub 3}L=4,4′,4′-nitrilotribenzoic acid, DMF=dimethylformamide, DEF=N,N-diethylformamide, py=pyridine). These four compounds were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing interesting SBUs variations. For compound 1, it displays a (3,6)-connected kgd net with wheel [Mn{sub 6}] cluster serving as SBU, whereas in 2, the sequence of Mn{sub 3}(COO){sub 9}(EtOH){sub 2} is repeated by inversion centers located between Mn1 and Mn3 to form an infinite Mn-carboxylate chain, which are further interlinked by L{sup 3−} ligands to form a 3D architecture. In 3, the pentanuclear Mn{sub 5}(CO{sub 2}){sub 12} clusters are interlinked to form a layer, which are further pillared by L{sup 3−} to generate a 3D network. Compound 4 has a (3,6)-connected network in which the SBU is a linear trimeric Mn{sub 3}(COO){sub 6}(py){sub 4}(H{sub 2}O) cluster. In addition, the thermal stabilities, X-ray powder diffraction of all the compounds were studied, photoluminescence behaviors of compounds 1, 3 and 4 are discussed. - Graphical abstract: Supramolecular assembly of C{sub 3}-symmetric ligand 4,4′,4″-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H{sub 3}L) with Mn{sup II} through varying auxiliary solvents of the medium resulted in the formation of diversified multinuclear Mn{sup II} subunits in four new coordination polymers. Synthesis and structure determination of the novel aluminophosphate TL-1: A new layered compound with corner-sharing AlX{sub 6} chains

A novel layered aluminophosphate (TL-1) has been synthesized. Crystals grow as pseudo-hexagonal thin platelets and their whole morphology depends on the synthesis conditions. The structure was solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction using charge flipping methods. The synthesized layered material, with composition [AlPO{sub 4}F(H{sub 2}O)]-(H{sub 10}C{sub 4}ON){sub 4}, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2{sub 1}/a with a=9.2282(5) Å, b=6.9152(4) Å, c=14.4615(9) Å, β=101.57(1)°. The novel compound has corner sharing AlO{sub 3}F{sub 2}(H{sub 2}O) octahedral chains running along [010], where fluorine atoms are at the shared apices, three oxygen atoms are shared with PO{sub 4} tetrahedra while the sixth oxygen pertain to an H{sub 2}O molecule. The stability field of the novel material is enclosed in the HF/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} ratio ranging between 1 and 4 and the HF/morpholine ratio lower than 3. At temperature lower than 190 °C, the synthesis results is a pure aluminophosphate sample (low alumina/morpholine ratio). A treatment with H{sub 2}CO{sub 3} leads to a complete morpholine removal, as shown by in situ Raman spectroscopy. Powder X-ray diffraction reveals that, after morpholine extraction, the material collapses. The collapse is irreversible. - Highlights: • A new layered aluminophosphate was obtained and characterized. • The crystal structure is a sequence of aluminophosphate and organic layers. • The stability field of the new phase was defined by changing chemistry and T. • The templating agent can be removed by using a CO{sub 2} aqueous solution. • The decomposition of the morpholine induce a collapse in the structure.

Alkaline earth-based coordination polymers derived from a cyclotriphosphazene-functionalized hexacarboxylate

Combination of hexakis(4-carboxylatephenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene with alkaline earth ions of increasing ionic radii (Mg{sup 2+}, Ca{sup 2+} and Ba{sup 2+}) under different solvothermal conditions yielded three new coordination polymers, and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The magnesium compound displays a three dimensional (3D) network structure constructed from the deprotonated ligand and the secondary building block Mg(COO){sub 4}, which can be rationalized as a (4,6)-connected topological net with the Schläfli symbol of (4{sup 4}·6{sup 2}){sub 3}(4{sup 9}·6{sup 6}){sub 2}. The calcium compound consists of 1D infinite “Ca-O” inorganic chains connected by the deprotonated ligands to from a 3D framework. The barium compound exhibits a 3D framework in which 1D “Ba-O” inorganic chains are connected together by the deprotonated organic linkers. Due to the semi-rigid nature, the ligand adopts distinctly different conformations in the three compounds. The metal ions’ influence exerted on the final structure of the resulting coordination polymers is also discussed. When the radii of alkaline earth ions increases descending down the group from Mg(II) to Ba(II), the coordination number becomes larger and more versatile: from 6 in the magnesium compound, to 6,7 and 10 in the calcium compound, and to 8 and 9 in the barium compound, thus substantially influencing the resulting final framework structures. Also, the photophysical properties were investigated systematically, revealing that the three compounds are photoluminscent in the solid state at room temperature. This work demonstrates that although the multiplicity of conformation in the hexacarboxylate ligand based on the inorganic scaffold cyclotriphosphazene makes it difficult to predict how this ligand will form extended network, but provides unique opportunities for the formation of diverse inorganic-organic hybrids exhibiting rich structural topologies. - Graphical abstract: Three alkaline earth-based coordination polymers were constructed from a semirigid cyclotriphosphazene-functionalized hexacarboxylate exhibiting different inorganic nodes as well as distinct ligand conformations relying on the metal ions, which presents the first example of such a ligand incorporated into alkaline earth–based coordination polymers. - Highlights: • Three alkaline earth-based coordination polymers were synthesized. • The three compounds exhibit different inorganic nodes and ligand conformations. • The three compounds are photoluminscent in the solid state.

SrPt{sub 3}Al{sub 2}, a CaCu{sub 5} relative (P6/mmm; a = 566.29(3), c = 389.39(3) pm; wR{sub 2} = 0.0202, 121 F{sup 2} values, 9 parameters), and Sr{sub 2}Pd{sub 2}Al, isostructural to Ca{sub 2}Pt{sub 2}Ge (Fdd2; a = 1041.45(5), b = 1558.24(7), c = 604.37(3) pm; wR{sub 2} = 0.0291, 844 F{sup 2} values, 25 parameters) have been prepared from the elements. The crystal structures have been investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural relaxation confirmed the electronic stability of SrPt{sub 3}Al{sub 2}, while orthorhombic Sr{sub 2}Pd{sub 2}Al might be a metastable polymorph as it is energetically competitive to its monoclinic variant. Both compounds are predicted to be metallic conductors as their density-of-states (DOS) are non-zero at the Fermi level. COHP bonding analysis coupled with Bader effective charge analysis suggest that the title compounds are polar intermetallic phases in which strong Pt–Al and Pd–Al covalent bonds are present, while a significant electron transfer from Sr atoms to the [Pt{sub 3}Al{sub 2}]{sup δ–} or [Pd{sub 2}Al]{sup δ–} network is found. - Graphical abstract: Chains of Pd atoms in the crystal structure of Sr{sub 2}Pd{sub 2}Al get connected by Al atoms in the shape of a distorted tetrahedra. Two new supramolecular metal diphosphonates: Synthesis, characterization, crystal structure and inhibiting effects on metallic corrosion

Two new divalent metal(II) aminodiphosphonates with layered structure, namely, Cu(H{sub 3}L{sup 1}){sub 2}·2H{sub 2}O (1), [H4L{sup 1}=methyl-N(CH{sub 2}PO{sub 3}H{sub 2}){sub 2}] and Cd{sub 2}(H{sub 2}L{sup 2}){sub 4}(2), [H{sub 4}L{sup 2}=n-propyl-N(CH{sub 2}PO{sub 3}H{sub 2}){sub 2}] were synthesized and characterized. The Cu(II) ions in complex 1 are octahedrally coordinated by four oxygen atoms from two chelating ligands and two phosphonate oxygen atoms from two neighboring Cu(H{sub 3}L{sup 1}){sub 2} units. The Cu(H{sub 3}L{sup 1}){sub 2} units are interconnected by bridging phosphonate groups, forming a 2-D metal phosphonate layer. The structure of complex 2 contains two unique Cd(II) ions octahedrally-coordinated by six phosphonate oxygen atoms from four H{sub 2}L{sup 2} diphosphonate anions. Corrosion inhibition performances of 1 and 2 were also compared with each other in order to study the effect of combinations of externally added Cd/H{sub 4}L{sup 2} and Cu/H{sub 4}L{sup 1} (1:1 ratio) on corrosion rates of carbon steel. It was found that at pH 3.0, Cd/H{sub 4}L{sup 2} or Cu/H{sub 4}L{sup 1} combinations do not have noticeable corrosion inhibition efficiency for carbon steel. In contrast, at pH 7.0, higher corrosion inhibition efficiency was achieved for Cd/H{sub 4}L{sup 2}. Physical characterizations such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were applied to study the corrosion specimens and film material. - Graphical abstract: Two new metal phosphonates have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. corrosion inhibition performances 1 and 2 are also compared.

Synthesis and structures of ligand-dominated one-dimensional silver(I)–bis(pyridylmethyl)amine coordination chains

Reactants slow diffusion of Ag(I) salts with 3,4′-bis(pyridylmethyl)amine (3,4′-bpma), an unsymmetric bis-pyridyl ligand equipped with a non-innocent amine backbone, afforded polymeric coordination adducts 1–5 having a general formula ([Ag(3,4′-bpma)(solv)]X){sub n} (solv = H{sub 2}O, CH{sub 3}OH, and none; X= CF{sub 3}CO{sub 2}{sup –}, BF{sub 4}{sup –}, ClO{sub 4}{sup –}, CF{sub 3}SO{sub 3}{sup –}, and SbF{sub 6}{sup –}). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses reveal that colorless crystals of Ag(I) coordination polymers (CPs) 1–5 have very similar one-dimensional (1D) non-flat chain structures, which are preferentially depicted as a “zipper-like” rather than a ladder-like or a double-stranded chain topologies. The 3,4′-bpma ligand in these Ag(I) CPs displays a μ{sub 3}-bridging mode with a gauche–trans (1,4, and 5) and a trans–trans (2 and 3) conformations. Noteworthy, anions do not show strong influence on structural modulation of Ag(I) CPs in the solid state, but really affect CP conformations and packing fashions, indicative of a ligand-dominated assembly process for such a Ag(I)–3,4′-bpma system. Thermal stabilities and solid-state photoluminescence properties of crystalline materials 1–5 were investigated. - Graphical abstract: This work has addressed five ligand-dominated Ag(I)–3,4′-bpma polymeric adducts, which show similar one-dimensional non-flat chain structures depicting a “zipper-like” topology rather than a ladder-like or a double-stranded chain structures.

Construction of three lanthanide metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis, structure, magnetic properties and highly selective sensing of metal ions

Three lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), [Ln(TZI)(H{sub 2}O){sub 4}]·3H{sub 2}O (Ln=Gd (1) and Tb (2) and Dy (3), H{sub 3}TZI=5-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)isophthalic acid), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1–3 are isostructural and display a 1D double chain based on dinuclear motifs with (μ-COO){sub 2} double bridges. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic interactions in 1, ferromagnetic interactions in 2 and 3. Furthermore, compound 3 displays a slow relaxation behavior. Compound 2 exhibits intense characteristic green emission of Tb(III) ions in the solid state, which can be observed by the naked eye under UV light. Interestingly, 2 can selectively sense Pb{sup 2+} and Fe{sup 3+} ions through luminescence enhancement and quenching, respectively. The luminescence quenching mechanisms have been investigated in detail. The study on luminescence Ln-MOFs as a probe for sensing Pb{sup 2+} and Fe{sup 3+} ions is exceedingly rare example. - Graphical abstract: Three Ln-MOFs were successfully synthesized using a 5-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)isophthalic acid ligand. Coordination Architectures of energetic Cd (II) coordination polymers constructed by the bifunctional substituted-tetrazole-carboxylate ligands

Three different tetrazole-carboxylate ligands, monotetrazole-carboxylate H{sub 2}tza (H{sub 2}tza=1,5-tetrazole-diacetic acid), Hpztza (Hpztza=5-(2-pyrazinyl)tetrazole-2(1-methyl)acetic acid), ditetrazole-carboxylate H{sub 2}tzpha (H{sub 2}tzpha=1,3-di(tetrazole-5-yl)benzene-N2,N2′-diacetic acid) have been chosen to react with CdCl{sub 2}·6H{sub 2}O, resulting in the formation of three new compounds [Cd{sub 2}(tza){sub 2}] (1), [Cd(pztza){sub 2}] (2) and [Cd(tzpha)(CH{sub 3}OH){sub 2}] (3). The coordinate sites of the three ligands are major influenced by the different substituted group of tetrazole ring. These compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 displays a complex 3D structure; compound 2 shows a 3D network and compound 3 features a 2D layer network. Furthermore, the luminescence properties investigated at room temperature in the solid state showed excellent ligand-centered luminescence. The obvious enhancement in luminescence makes these compounds potential materials for optical use. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric-differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analyses were applied to evaluate the thermal decomposition behavior of such compounds, showing that compounds 2 and 3 can be used as potential energetic materials. The relevant thermodynamic parameters ΔH, ΔS and ΔG were calculated as well. - Graphical abstract: H{sub 2}tza, Hpztza and H{sub 2}tzpha have been prepared. Three novel Cd (II)compounds were synthesized by reactions of CdCl{sub 2}·6H{sub 2}O, namely three dimensional [Cd{sub 2}(tza){sub 2}] (1), three dimensional [Cd(pztza){sub 2}] (2), and two dimensional [Cd(tzpha)(CH{sub 3}O){sub 2}] (3). The luminescences were investigated. Furthermore, the DSC show compounds 1 and 3 can be used as potential explosive materials.

HT-solution growth and characterisation of In{sub x}Na{sub x}Mn{sub 1-2x}WO{sub 4} (0<x≤0.26)

A new solid solution system, In{sub x}Na{sub x}Mn{sub 1–2x}WO{sub 4} (0<x=≤0.26) belonging to the MnWO{sub 4}-type multiferroics was investigated. Large single crystals were grown up to several mm in length from high-temperature oxide solutions using a solvent mixture of Na{sub 2}WO{sub 4} and Na{sub 2}W{sub 2}O{sub 7}. Quantitative doping degrees were analyzed by means of electron microprobe. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies agreed with the polar space group P2 for In{sub x}Na{sub x}Mn{sub 1–2x}WO{sub 4}. The complexity of partial (Na{sup +}/Mn{sup 2+})- and (In{sup 3+}/Mn{sup 2+})-ordering makes their atomic sites unique, explaining the dissymmetrization from P2/c down to P2. This is also valid for the InNaW{sub 2}O{sub 8}-type Mn{sub 2y}In{sub 1-y}Na{sub 1-y}W{sub 2}O{sub 8} solid solution found as co-product in this study. Specific heat and magnetisation measurements showed a paramagnetic dilution effect from (In{sup 3+}/Na{sup +})-doping while lowering the transition temperature for the multiferroic phase AF2 of In{sub x}Na{sub x}Mn{sub 1–2x}WO{sub 4} with respect to the prototype MnWO{sub 4}. - Graphical abstract: A volume expansion around Mn2 site by (In, Na)-doping is drawn by the atomic shifts in a Mn2O{sub 6} octahedron in the atomistic structure of In{sub 0.20(2)}Na{sub 0.17(2)}Mn{sub 0.63(4)}WO{sub 4} from the respective atomic positions of In-free MnWO{sub 4}. The size and direction of arrows are scaled up for indicating the consequent local distortion. - Highlights: • HT solution crystal growth of (In, Na):MnWO{sub 4}-solid-solution compounds. • Polar space group symmetry P2 for their atomistic structures. • Magnetic properties of the multiferroic phase AF2 by (In{sup 3+}, Na{sup +})-doping. • Magnetic phase transitions.

Band gaps and photocurrent responses of two novel alkaline earth metal(II) complexes based on 4,5-di(4′-carboxylphenyl)benzene

By using a rigid dicarboxylate ligand, 4,5-di(4′-carboxylphenyl)benzene (H{sub 2}L), two complexes formulated as SrL(DMF)(H{sub 2}O)·(CH{sub 3}CN) (DMF=N,N′-dimethylformamide) (1) and BaL(H{sub 2}O){sub 2} (2) were solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 display two-dimensional (2D) layer structures. The two complexes exhibit different electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties. Their thermal stabilities, cyclic voltammograms, UV–vis absorption and diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence properties have been investigated. The band structures, the total density of states (TDOS) and partial density of states (PDOS) of the two complexes were calculated by CASTEP program. Complex 2 exhibits much higher photocurrent density than complex 1. The Mott–Schottky plots reveal that complexes 1 and 2 both are p-type semiconductors, which are in agreement with their band structure calculations. - Graphical abstract: Two alkaline earth metal(II) complexes with 2D layer structures are p-type semiconductors, they possess different band structures and density of states. And the Ba(II) complex 2 exhibits much higher photocurrent density than the Sr(II) complex 1.
