Winter bulge and diurnal variations in hydrogen inferred from AE-C composition measurements

In situ mass spectrometric measurements of ion and neutral particle thermospheric compositions have been used to infer the latitudinal and diurnal variations of thermospheric atomic hydrogen for solstice conditions. Local time-dependent and local time-independent components of the observed hydrogen distribution were separated on the basis of a model generated by expanding the log of neutral hydrogen concentration in terms of spherical harmonics. Results are compared with analogous data on N2 concentration; the comparison reveals an anticorrelation between gas temperature and hydrogen concentration. The slope of this anticorrelation line represents the 'zero flux condition' from the exosphere theory of Hodges (1973), thus further bearing out the conclusion that exospheric flow is the dominant process governing the global distribution of hydrogen.

Study of mesoscale phenomena, winter monsoon clouds and snow area based on LANDSAT data

The author has identified the following significant results. Most longitudinal clouds which appear as continuous linear clouds are composed of small transversal clouds. There are mountain waves of different wavelength in a comparatively narrow area indicating complicated orographical effects on wind and temperature distribution or on both dynamical and static stability condition. There is a particular shape of cirrus cloud suggestive of turbulence in the vicinity of CAT in the upper troposphere near jet stream level and its cold air side. Thin cirrus of overcast condition can be distinguished by MSS; however, extremely thin cirrus of partly cloudy condition cannot be detected even in LANDSAT data. This presents a serious problem in the interpretation of satellite thermal infrared radiation data since they affect the value.

Atmospheric thermal structure during a winter anomaly absorption event

Temperature and wind profiles between 60 and 90 km were obtained during an anomalous wintertime absorption event. Data were collected by passive inflatable falling spheres deployed from meteorological rockets. The enhanced radio wave absorption is apparently associated with a well-defined mesopause near 84 km and a large inversion near 68 km; these readings suggest that both phenomena have been displaced to a level about 5 km lower than normal. In addition, colder than normal temperatures are recorded in the 55 to 72 km range during the anomalous conditions. The possible relationship between this change in the mesospheric temperature structure and the anomalous absorption and atmospheric radiative characteristics is discussed.

Winter performance of a domestic solar-heating system--Duffield, Virginia

Sunlight supplies 39 percent of heat load, saving 9 barrels of fuel oil in one heating season. Report describes system installation in two-story, single-family residence. Energy is collected with roof-mounted air flat-plate collectors, stored in rock bin, and transferred to water preheat tank whenever system is storing energy; heat pump supplies heat to house.
