Computer programming requirements in support of solar astronomy experiment on manned space station
The multispectral techniques have shown themselves capable of solving problems in a large number of user areas. The results obtained are in some instances quite impressive. In many instances, the multispectral detection of various phenomena is an empirical fact for which there is little physical explanation today. To date, most of the user applications that have been addressed are exploratory in nature. The closest approximation to an operational situation encountered so far is that of the survey of wetlands in North Dakota reported in this paper.
It is shown that an automatic imaging system consisting of a combination of optical and digital computer elements is feasible and has considerable advantages over direct image scanning systems. With such a system, it is possible to process very large quantities of remotely sensed image spectra.
A recorder system has been installed on two operational fighter aircrafts. Signal values from a c.g.-acceleration transducer and a strain-gage installation at the wing root were sampled and recorded in digital format on the recorder system. To analyse such load-time histories for fatigue evaluation purposes, a number of counting methods are available in which level crossings, peaks, or ranges are counted. Ten different existing counting principles are defined. The load-time histories are analysed to evaluate these counting methods. For some of the described counting methods, the counting results might be affected by arbitrarily chosen parameters such as the magnitude of load ranges that will be neglected and other secondary counting restrictions. Such influences might invalidate the final counting results entirely. The evaluation shows that for the type of load-time histories associated with most counting methods, a sensible value of the parameters involved can be found.
The features of a new class of transparent ferroelectric ceramic materials, called PLZT, are described. PLZT are shown to have very strong electrooptic properties and memory, and are switched through transparent electrodes when mechanically strained. Because of these properties, they can be used to fabricate two-dimensional page composers for coherent optical systems. Techniques for fabricating such devices are outlined along with preliminary test results. Applications in displays are shown to be also feasible.
