UPC++ v1.0 Specification, Revision 2022.9.0

UPC++ is a C++ library providing classes and functions that support Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). All communication operations are syntactically explicit and default to non-blocking; asynchrony is managed through the use of futures, promises and continuation callbacks, enabling the programmer to construct a graph of operations to execute asynchronously as high-latency dependencies are satisfied. A global pointer abstraction provides system-wide addressability of shared memory, including host and accelerator memories. The parallelism model is primarily process-based, but the interface is thread-safe and designed to allow efficient and expressive use in multi-threaded applications. The interface is designed for extreme scalability throughout, and deliberately avoids design features that could inhibit scalability.

GRASP/Ada 95: Reverse Engineering Tools for Ada

The GRASP/Ada project (Graphical Representations of Algorithms, Structures, and Processes for Ada) has successfully created and prototyped an algorithmic level graphical representation for Ada software, the Control Structure Diagram (CSD), and a new visualization for a fine-grained complexity metric called the Complexity Profile Graph (CPG). By synchronizing the CSD and the CPG, the CSD view of control structure, nesting, and source code is directly linked to the corresponding visualization of statement level complexity in the CPG. GRASP has been integrated with GNAT, the GNU Ada 95 Translator to provide a comprehensive graphical user interface and development environment for Ada 95. The user may view, edit, print, and compile source code as a CSD with no discernible addition to storage or computational overhead. The primary impetus for creation of the CSD was to improve the comprehension efficiency of Ada software and, as a result, improve reliability and reduce costs. The emphasis has been on the automatic generation of the CSD from Ada 95 source code to support reverse engineering and maintenance. The CSD has the potential to replace traditional prettyprinted Ada source code. The current update has focused on the design and implementation of a new Motif compliant user interface, and a new CSD generator consisting of a tagger and renderer. The Complexity Profile Graph (CPG) is based on a set of functions that describes the context, content, and the scaling for complexity on a statement by statement basis. When combined graphicafly, the result is a composite profile of complexity for the program unit. Ongoing research includes the development and refinement of the associated functions, and the development of the CPG generator prototype. The current Version 5.0 prototype provides the capability for the user to generate CSDs and CPGs from Ada 95 source code in a reverse engineering as well as forward engineering mode with a level of flexibility suitable for practical application. This report provides an overview of the GRASP/Ada project with an emphasis on the current update.

Software Development for SonicSonde Instrumentation Suite

The SonicSonde is an innovative weather instrumentation suite for boundary layer sampling. Software development included creating a graphical user interface (GUI) to receive, process, archive, and display data in real-time. Targeted at the Windows operating system but with multi-platform extensibility in mind, the GUI was developed using Qt 5.14 in C++. A key design consideration was to allow for tailored displays and analysis while also permitting additional sensors to be added to the platform. As such, the application relies heavily on flexible interfaces and multithreading processing for capturing, modelling, and plotting data. The object-oriented nature of Qt made it ideal for this purpose. The application supports input through live serial streams and static .csv or .dat files, custom meteorological graphs, and user-dictated panel views and output intervals. Additionally, the GUI displays real-time information about the state of the instrument. The versatility of the SonicSonde will allow meteorologists and researchers to perform or better support a variety of aeronautic and atmospheric missions.

Triangle Counting with Cyclic Distributions

Triangles are the simplest non-trivial subgraphs and triangle counting is used in a number of different applications. The order in which vertices are processed in triangle counting strongly effects the amount of work that needs to be done (and thus the overall performance). Ordering vertices by degree has been shown to be one particularly effective ordering approach. However, for graphs with skewed degree distributions (such as power-law graphs), ordering by degree effects the distribution of work; parallelization must account for this distribution in order to balance work among workers. In this paper we provide an in- depth analysis of the ramifications of degree-based ordering on parallel triangle counting. We present approach for partitioning work in triangle counting, based on cyclic distribution and some surprisingly simple C++ implementations. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, particularly for power-law (and social network) graphs.

BAMCensus (The Behavior and Advanced Mobility Census Dataset Aggregator) [SWR-25-120]

This software is a high-performance tool developed in Rust for downloading and processing large-scale geospatial datasets, specifically focusing on US Census data. It is designed to address scaling limitations found in existing tools, such as R's [tidycensus](https://walker-data.com/tidycensus/), by providing performant streaming dataset JOIN operations between various US Census datasets (like ACS and LEHD) and their corresponding geometries stored on the TIGER/Lines web server. The tool automates the process of joining these data sources, returning aggregated data to the user based on a specified census GEOID type. The tool automates the process of joining these data sources, returning aggregated data to the user based on a specified census GEOID type. Its primary motivation stems from the need for a high-performance solution to combine spatial datasets with graph traversals within the context of mobility analysis tooling being developed at NREL's Behavior and Advanced Mobility (BAM) group.

ExaTN: Scalable GPU-Accelerated High-Performance Processing of General Tensor Networks at Exascale

We present ExaTN (Exascale Tensor Networks), a scalable GPU-accelerated C++ library which can express and process tensor networks on shared- as well as distributed-memory high-performance computing platforms, including those equipped with GPU accelerators. Specifically, ExaTN provides the ability to build, transform, and numerically evaluate tensor networks with arbitrary graph structures and complexity. It also provides algorithmic primitives for the optimization of tensor factors inside a given tensor network in order to find an extremum of a chosen tensor network functional, which is one of the key numerical procedures in quantum many-body theory and quantum-inspired machine learning. Numerical primitives exposed by ExaTN provide the foundation for composing rather complex tensor network algorithms. We enumerate multiple application domains which can benefit from the capabilities of our library, including condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, quantum circuit simulations, as well as quantum and classical machine learning, for some of which we provide preliminary demonstrations and performance benchmarks just to emphasize a broad utility of our library.

Interaction of high-intensity laser radiation with metals.

The interaction is characterized by the production of plasma, within which the primary absorption occurs. Absorption of laser radiation by a plasma may occur by several processes. The absorption process called 'inverse bremsstrahlung' is discussed. The interaction of a laser beam with the plasma produced from a thick metal target was studied. The results of the measurements of the ion kinetic energies are presented in a graph. In addition to measurements with thick targets, information was also obtained with a thin foil of gold.

Software for Analyzing Sequences of Flow-Related Images

Spotlight is a computer program for analysis of sequences of images generated in combustion and fluid physics experiments. Spotlight can perform analysis of a single image in an interactive mode or a sequence of images in an automated fashion. The primary type of analysis is tracking of positions of objects over sequences of frames. Features and objects that are typically tracked include flame fronts, particles, droplets, and fluid interfaces. Spotlight automates the analysis of object parameters, such as centroid position, velocity, acceleration, size, shape, intensity, and color. Images can be processed to enhance them before statistical and measurement operations are performed. An unlimited number of objects can be analyzed simultaneously. Spotlight saves results of analyses in a text file that can be exported to other programs for graphing or further analysis. Spotlight is a graphical-user-interface-based program that at present can be executed on Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. A version that runs on Macintosh computers is being considered.

From Data to Knowledge: A Graph-Based Reliability Approach to Assess System Health

With the goal of maximizing plant reliability and availability, complex systems such as nuclear power plants continuously monitor and record the performance and the health status of many components, assets, and systems. Such data may take the form of online monitoring data, condition reports, and maintenance reports and it carries the potential to provide system engineers with insights into anomalous behaviors or degradation trends as well as the possible causes behind them and to predict their direct consequences. The analysis of such data poses however few challenges. While some of these challenges are technical in nature (i.e., data are often distributed over several physical servers or databases), others are conceptual in nature (i.e., data elements come in different formats, numeric or textual), and measured values have different scales (e.g., vibration spectra and oil temperature). This paper directly tackles these challenges, and it focuses on the integration of all these data elements in order to assist plant system engineers in analyzing component, assets, and systems performances and optimize maintenance activities. This is performed by 1) extracting knowledge from textual data via technical language processing methods, and 2) quantifying system, asset, and component health from numeric condition-based data. We rely on model-based system engineering (MBSE) models of systems and assets to identify their architecture and functional (i.e., cause and effect) relations. Numeric and textual data elements are then associated with an MBSE graph element, based on their nature. This bonding of MBSE models and data elements constitutes a first-of-its-kind knowledge graph of a nuclear power plants system, with data elements being organized in a structured manner that enables system engineers to identify cause-effect trends in data elements and carry out appropriate actions in response.

Determining flow directions in river channel networks using planform morphology and topology

Abstract. The abundance of global, remotely sensed surface water observations has accelerated efforts toward characterizing and modeling how water moves across the Earth's surface through complex channel networks. In particular, deltas and braided river channel networks may contain thousands of links that route water, sediment, and nutrients across landscapes. In order to model flows through channel networks and characterize network structure, the direction of flow for each link within the network must be known. In this work, we propose a rapid, automatic, and objective method to identify flow directions for all links of a channel network using only remotely sensed imagery and knowledge of the network's inlet and outlet locations. We designed a suite of direction-predicting algorithms (DPAs), each of which exploits a particular morphologic characteristic of the channel network to provide a prediction of a link's flow direction. DPAs were chained together to create “recipes”, or algorithms that set all the flow directions of a channel network. Separate recipes were built for deltas and braided rivers and applied to seven delta and two braided river channel networks. Across all nine channel networks, the recipe-predicted flow directions agreed with expert judgement for 97 % of all tested links, and most disagreements were attributed to unusual channel network topologies that can easily be accounted for by pre-seeding critical links with known flow directions. Our results highlight the (non)universality of process–form relationships across deltas and braided rivers.

DLSIA: Deep Learning for Scientific Image Analysis

DLSIA (Deep Learning for Scientific Image Analysis) is a Python-based machine learning library that empowers scientists and researchers across diverse scientific domains with a range of customizable convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures for a wide variety of tasks in image analysis to be used in downstream data processing. DLSIA features easy-to-use architectures, such as autoencoders, tunable U-Nets and parameter-lean mixed-scale dense networks (MSDNets). Additionally, this article introduces sparse mixed-scale networks (SMSNets), generated using random graphs, sparse connections and dilated convolutions connecting different length scales. For verification, several DLSIA-instantiated networks and training scripts are employed in multiple applications, including inpainting for X-ray scattering data using U-Nets and MSDNets, segmenting 3D fibers in X-ray tomographic reconstructions of concrete using an ensemble of SMSNets, and leveraging autoencoder latent spaces for data compression and clustering. As experimental data continue to grow in scale and complexity, DLSIA provides accessible CNN construction and abstracts CNN complexities, allowing scientists to tailor their machine learning approaches, accelerate discoveries, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and advance research in scientific image analysis.

Data Quality Monitoring for the Hadron Calorimeters Using Transfer Learning for Anomaly Detection

The proliferation of sensors brings an immense volume of spatio-temporal (ST) data in many domains, including monitoring, diagnostics, and prognostics applications. Data curation is a time-consuming process for a large volume of data, making it challenging and expensive to deploy data analytics platforms in new environments. Transfer learning (TL) mechanisms promise to mitigate data sparsity and model complexity by utilizing pre-trained models for a new task. Despite the triumph of TL in fields like computer vision and natural language processing, efforts on complex ST models for anomaly detection (AD) applications are limited. In this study, we present the potential of TL within the context of high-dimensional ST AD with a hybrid autoencoder architecture, incorporating convolutional, graph, and recurrent neural networks. Motivated by the need for improved model accuracy and robustness, particularly in scenarios with limited training data on systems with thousands of sensors, this research investigates the transferability of models trained on different sections of the Hadron Calorimeter of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at CERN. The key contributions of the study include exploring TL’s potential and limitations within the context of encoder and decoder networks, revealing insights into model initialization and training configurations that enhance performance while substantially reducing trainable parameters and mitigating data contamination effects.

Towards Next-Generation Urban Decision Support Systems through AI-Powered Construction of Scientific Ontology Using Large Language Models—A Case in Optimizing Intermodal Freight Transportation

The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models into various optimization systems is on the rise. However, addressing complex urban and environmental management challenges often demands deep expertise in domain science and informatics. This expertise is essential for deriving data and simulation-driven insights that support informed decision-making. In this context, we investigate the potential of leveraging the pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) to create knowledge representations for supporting operations research. By adopting ChatGPT-4 API as the reasoning core, we outline an applied workflow that encompasses natural language processing, Methontology-based prompt tuning, and Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), to automate the construction of scenario-based ontologies using existing research articles and technical manuals of urban datasets and simulations. From these ontologies, knowledge graphs can be derived using widely adopted formats and protocols, guiding various tasks towards data-informed decision support. The performance of our methodology is evaluated through a comparative analysis that contrasts our AI-generated ontology with the widely recognized pizza ontology, commonly used in tutorials for popular ontology software. We conclude with a real-world case study on optimizing the complex system of multi-modal freight transportation. Our approach advances urban decision support systems by enhancing data and metadata modeling, improving data integration and simulation coupling, and guiding the development of decision support strategies and essential software components.

Parafrase restructuring of FORTRAN code for parallel processing

Parafrase transforms a FORTRAN code, subroutine by subroutine, into a parallel code for a vector and/or shared-memory multiprocessor system. Parafrase is not a compiler; it transforms a code and provides information for a vector or concurrent process. Parafrase uses a data dependency to reveal parallelism among instructions. The data dependency test distinguishes between recurrences and statements that can be directly vectorized or parallelized. A number of transformations are required to build a data dependency graph.

A multipurpose digital modulator

The theoretical basis and hardware implementation of a versatile device which uses digital signal-processing methods to achieve signal modulation are reported. The carrier-modulation process is formulated as a simple quadrature equation; a generalized description of the signal constellation to be processed is derived; the pulse-shaping scheme is explained; and the system architecture is described in detail and illustrated with diagrams. Experimental results obtained with a breadboard transmitter based on this modulation technique are presented in extensive graphs. The power spectra and eye diagrams generated for different QPSK, 8PSK, and MSK modulation schemes are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions. It is suggested that this modulator could be readily implemented in VLSI and mass produced.
