Induction of illusory self-rotation and nystagmus by a rotating sound-field

Subjects seated in darkness often experience illusory self-rotation when exposed to a rotating sound field. Compelling illusions of a self-rotation are generally accompanied by nystagmoid movements of the eyes with the slow phase in the direction opposite that of the experienced self-rotation. These phenomena are related to the functioning of a spatial constancy mechanism by which a stable distinction is normally maintained between movements of self and movements of the environment. The appearance of nystagmus during illusory self-rotating indicates that apparent body orientation can influence oculomotor control.

Renal sodium reabsorption following induction of and recovery from volume expansion

In the rat, infusion of a volume of isotonic saline equal to 2% of body weight resulted in an 82% increase in the delivery of filtrate out of the proximal tubule but little or, in some animals, no change in the urinary excretion of sodium. By contrast, further degrees of volume expansion resulted in lesser increases in the distal delivery of filtrate, but were associated with a marked increase in the urinary excretion of sodium. Sixty minutes following completion of volume expansion, while the animals were still in positive sodium balance, the urinary excretion of sodium decreased 52% compared to a decrease of only 24% in the distal delivery of filtrate. During the course of progressive volume expansion and during the recovery phase, there was a dissociation between alterations in sodium reabsorption in the proximal convoluted tubule and in the whole kidney. These studies indicate that although the proximal tubule is more sensitive to changes in the extracellular fluid volume, distal nephron sites are ultimately responsible both for the natriuresis of volume expansion and the relative antinatriuresis of the recovery periods.

Inhibition of solar wind impingement on Mercury by planetary induction currents

Analytic methods are developed for taking into account finite planetary conductivity in modeling departures from equilibrium of a magnetospheric boundary caused by solar wind stagnation pressure variations. Using the lowest suggested value of the planetary dipole moment (2.4 x 10 to the 22nd G cu cm), it is estimated that a minimum pressure of about 38 P sub 0 (where P sub 0 is the external stagnation pressure in the steady state) is required to force the standoff distance down to the subsolar surface of Mercury if the pressure change persists for at least 1 day. This value is 4.3 times that which would be predicted if Mercury had no core, and it is larger than the maximum pressure predicted at Mercury's orbit (about 25 P sub 0) on the basis of hourly averaged solar wind statistics at 1 AU.

Characteristics of enzymatic induction provoked by chlordane

The effects of various stresses, such as restraint and lowering or raising of environmental temperature, in mice pretreated with chlordane were investigated. (Chlordane is an inhibitor of protein synthesis.) It was found that restraint or exposure to a cold environment for three hours mobilized the chlordane stored in the adipose tissue of mice.

Inductive electric field at the magnetopause

The electric field data for two crossings of the magnetopause by ISEE-1 on November 20, 1977, have been analyzed with high time resolution. In both cases the electric field has a negative dawn-dusk component in the boundary layer, so it must reverse somewhere within the current layer to the positive value outside. If there is a component parallel to the moving magnetopause current it is small, and by no means obvious. In the case of the exit crossing from the boundary layer to the magnetosheath the data show that the electric field vector is turning for about two seconds at roughly the satellite spin rate; this changing direction suggests that the electric field has a curl. Such a curl could be caused by a travelling localized perturbation of the magnetopause surface current associated with impulsive plasma transport through the magnetopause.

Motor power control circuit for ac induction motors

A motor power control of the type which functions by controlling the power factor wherein one of the parameters of power factor current on time is determined by the on time of a triac through which current is supplied to the motor. By means of a positive feedback circuit, a wider range of control is effected.

Issues in rule identification and logical induction

The relationship between language and empirical fitting of data is discussed. The production system is presented as an appropriate description of human behavior in Man-Machine systems. Issues arising in the identification of rules from data are examined. Rules identified through logical generalization are shown to be equivocal. Difficulties arising from the use of logic-based procedures with human performance data containing errors are explored. Problems relating to rule sets which are not disjoint are discussed and a solution presented. Significant testing issues are raised for rule identification and a procedure based on controlling contrivedness is presented. A synthesis of data and knowledge-based approaches is suggested as a remedy to many of the difficulties discussed.

Enhanced current flow through a plasma cloud by induction of plasma turbulence

Electrodynamic tethers have been proposed as a means of generating power in low earth orbit. One of the limitations on the power generated is the relatively low electron current that can be collected. It is proposed that the electron current can be significantly enhanced by means of current induced plasma turbulence in a plasma cloud around the collecting anode. This is examined for the specific case of lower hybrid turbulence. An important conclusion is that the use of plasma clouds in the ionosphere will entail a high impedance (no instability) and a low impedance (lower hybrid instability) mode of operation depending on the current density.

It is proposed that the electron current can be significantly enhanced by means of current-induced plasma turbulence in a plasma cloud around the collecting anode. An important conclusion is that the use of plasma clouds in the ionosphere will entail a high-impedance (no instability) and a low-impedance (ion acoustic instability) mode of operation. The low-impedance mode of operation will have two submodes, one steady state and one pulsed.

Space shuttle main engine anomaly data and inductive knowledge based systems: Automated corporate expertise

Progress is reported on the development of SCOTTY, an expert knowledge-based system to automate the analysis procedure following test firings of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The integration of a large-scale relational data base system, a computer graphics interface for experts and end-user engineers, potential extension of the system to flight engines, application of the system for training of newly-hired engineers, technology transfer to other engines, and the essential qualities of good software engineering practices for building expert knowledge-based systems are among the topics discussed.

Study of the generator/motor operation of induction machines in a high frequency link space power system

Static power conversion systems have traditionally utilized dc current or voltage source links for converting power from one ac or dc form to another since it readily achieves the temporary energy storage required to decouple the input from the output. Such links, however, result in bulky dc capacitors and/or inductors and lead to relatively high losses in the converters due to stresses on the semiconductor switches. The feasibility of utilizing a high frequency sinusoidal voltage link to accomplish the energy storage and decoupling function is examined. In particular, a type of resonant six pulse bridge interface converter is proposed which utilizes zero voltage switching principles to minimize switching losses and uses an easy to implement technique for pulse density modulation to control the amplitude, frequency, and the waveshape of the synthesized low frequency voltage or current. Adaptation of the proposed topology for power conversion to single-phase ac and dc voltage or current outputs is shown to be straight forward. The feasibility of the proposed power circuit and control technique for both active and passive loads are verified by means of simulation and experiment.
