Final Results from the Jefferson Lab Qweak Experiment and Constraints on Physics Beyond the Standard Model

The Qweak ep elastic scattering experiment used to extract an asymmetry at Q 2 = 0.0248 GeV 2 will be described. The final result was -226.5 ± 9.3 ppb- the most precise ep asymmetry ever measured. Some of the backgrounds and corrections applied in the experiment will be explained and quantified, and some of the experimental challenges will be described. Several methods used to extract consistent values of the proton’s weak charge Q w(p) from our asymmetry measurement will be outlined. We also show the multi-TeV mass reach for beyond-the-Standard-Model physics obtained from our determination of the proton’s weak charge, and discuss our sensitivity to specific examples of new physics like compositeness. From the proton’s weak charge, a result for the fundamental standard model parameter sin 2 θ W is obtained at the energy scale of our experiment. We compare that to the few other determinations of sin 2 θ W available in the literature, as well as the predicted behaviour based on SM input.

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Building 59

The building management system in Building 59 is monitoring and archiving building-level electricity usage, HVAC and lighting system states (e.g., setpoint, temperature, flow rate, pressure), indoor environmental conditions (air temperature, relative humidity, CO2), on-site weather (air temperature, relative humidity), and especially occupant counts as well as other metrics such as Wi-Fi signal. This dataset could support multiple use cases, such as model predictive control and occupant related demand management.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering at Hall A, Jefferson Lab

The Standard Model of particle physics de?nes quarks and leptons as the basic building blocks of all matter. The interaction between them are mediated by force carrying gauge bosons. Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD), the theory that explains the strong interaction is still not complete enough to derive the physical observables of a Quark-Gluon system from the fundamental degrees of freedom of its constituents. Experimentally observable single particle densities provide important insights into our understanding of the quark-gluon system and hence help fill in the gaps of QCD. Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) provide simultaneous information of both spacial and longitudinal momentum distributions of constituents of a quark-gluon system. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is understood to be the simplest and cleanest process to access GPDs. Even though the exclusive DVCS is simple to understand, the experimental process however, is complex with the Bethe-Heitler and e + p ? e + ? + N? being in the mix of the electron proton scattering e+p ? e+?+X. Over the years, 3 generations of DVCS experiments have been conducted in the Experimental Hall-A of Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). This thesis presents the extraction of DVCS cross section in 9 total kinematic points from the 3rd generation experiment (DVCS3) conducted after the 12 GeV upgrade of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) of JLab during Fall 2014 - Fall 2016.

General Biology 2 Sugar Beet Lab - Spring 24

This module uses the Department of Energy Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) platform to explore topics such as genome assembly, metagenomics, and phylogenomics. Here students will use sequences from DNA that they collected to compare the metagenomes of microbial communities from the rhizosphere of plants grown in fertilized vs. unfertilized soils. Using these data students will evaluate the impact of fertilizer on these communities and how these microbial communities influence soil health and plant growth.

Non-Idealities in Lab-Scale Kinetic Testing: A Theoretical Study of a Modular Temkin Reactor

The Temkin reactor can be applied for industrial relevant catalyst testing with unmodified catalyst particles. It was assumed in the literature that this reactor behaves as a cascade of continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR). However, this assumption was based only on outlet gas composition or inert residence time distribution measurements. The present work theoretically investigates the catalytic CO2 methanation as a test case on different catalyst geometries, a sphere, and a ring, inside a single Temkin reaction chamber under isothermal conditions. Axial gas-phase species profiles from detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are compared with a CSTR and 1D plug-flow reactor (PFR) model using a sophisticated microkinetic model. In addition, a 1D chemical reactor network (CRN) model was developed, and model parameters were adjusted based on the CFD simulations. Whereas the ideal reactor models overpredict the axial product concentrations, the CRN model results agree well with the CFD simulations, especially under low to medium flow rates. This study shows that complex flow patterns greatly influence species fields inside the Temkin reactor. Although residence time measurements suggest CSTR-like behavior, the reactive flow cannot be described by either a CSTR or PFR model but with the developed CRN model.

Supernova Hydrodynamics: A Lab-scale Study of the Blast-driven Instability Using High-speed Diagnostics

A novel experimental approach to study the blast-driven instability at a nondiffuse, gaseous interface with a density gradient is presented. Under Euler similarity, this approach enables study of dissipative-scale hydrodynamics relevant to many astrophysical and laboratory high energy density phenomena in a well-resolved manner. The instability is initiated by passing a Taylor–Sedov blast wave originating from a controlled detonation through a perturbed and stably stratified interface between two gases. The facility and driving blast wave are characterized to obtain repeatable conditions and capture large ensembles of time-resolved Mie scattering imaging that show consistent hydrodynamic development. We analyze the instability evolution between different gas pairs to demonstrate the wide range of development and turbulent behavior that may occur between different supernova layers. The mean evolution of the hydrodynamic instability is compared to a buoyancy–drag model that is frequently used to estimate perturbation growth in supernova mixing research. We propose a time delay to this model in order to reproduce the measured instability behavior and demonstrate model robustness in handling flows driven by a time-varying acceleration.

Programs Enabling Deep Technology Transfer from National Labs

To maximize the technology transfer potential, it is important to create an ecosystem for the inventors to adapt the technologies developed for basic science to successful commercial ventures. In this white paper we present a brief overview of technology transfer programs at high energy physics (HEP) laboratories with a focus on the programs at Fermilab and KEK, and identify opportunities and recommendations for increasing partnerships and commercialization at HEP-centric laboratories.

Threshold J / ψ Photoproduction with GlueX at Jefferson Lab

We report preliminary results for the $\gamma p \rightarrow J/\psi p$ exclusive cross-section from the threshold up to a photon energy of $12$ GeV. These measurements have a direct relation to the pentaquarks, $P^+_c(4380)$ and $P^+_c(4450)$, reported by LHCb, expected to be seen in the $s$-channel photoproduction $\gamma p \rightarrow P_c \rightarrow J/\psi p$, allowing to put a limit on the $P^+_c(4450) \rightarrow J/\psi p$ branching ratio. The near threshold production mechanism is discussed, as well. The GlueX experiment uses a tagged-photon beam produced by electrons from the 12 GeV CEBAF machine. The detector system is based on a 2 T solenoid and includes electro-magnetic calorimeters and drift chambers providing full acceptance coverage. The $J/\psi $ particles are registered by their decay into $e^+e^-$ pairs identified in the calorimeters. Taking advantage of the exclusivity of the reaction and the precise knowledge of the beam energy, we achieve a high mass resolution and a very low background, allowing us to perform a more sensitive unbinned analysis.
