Postbuckling behavior of fiber reinforced plates and curved panels

Results obtained on the postbuckling behavior of plates and curved panels using the NOLIN computer program are reported. As an example, the postbuckling behavior of a flexible, isotropic and quadrangular plate is solved and the results are found to be accurate and relibale in comparison with those in the literature. The fatigue-deformation behavior of a rectangular CKL plate is measured, and the results are compared with those from NOLIN and other computer programs. A slightly curved panel with optimized layering is studied.

Acousto-ultrasonic input-output characterization of unidirectional fiber composite plate by SH waves

A unidirectional fiberglass epoxy composite plate specimen is modelled as a homogeneous transversely isotropic continuum plate medium. Acousto-ultrasonic non-contact input-output characterization by tracing SH waves in the continuum is studied theoretically with a transmitting and receiving transducer located on the same face of the plate. It is found that the directional dependence of the phase velocity of the SH waves travelling in the transversely isotropic medium has a significant effect on the delay time as opposed to the phase velocity of the SH wave travelling in an isotropic medium.

Electromagnetic backscattering by plates and disks

With the recent development of diffraction coefficients for imperfectly conducting half-planes, it has become possible to analyze a wide variety of problems for which the impedance surface boundary condition applies. This impedance boundary condition, while approximate, was utilized to extend the usefulness of the Uniform Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (UTD) beyond the perfectly conducting geometries. These half-plane diffraction coefficients are used to analyze patterns of an antenna in the presence of an imperfectly conducting flat polygonal plate. The Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD) techniques were also used to investigate the backscattering from perfectly conducting plates. To further improve the soft polarization results for wide angles, a model for the creeping wave or circulating current on the edge of the disk was obtained and used to find an additional component of the backscattered field. The backscattering from a square plate was then analyzed using GTD. Backscattering in both the principal and off-principal planes was examined.

Component mode synthesis and large deflection vibration of complex structures. Volume 2: Single-mode large deflection vibrations of beams and plates using finite element method

A finite element method is presented for the large amplitude vibrations of complex structures that can be modelled with beam and rectangular plate elements subjected to harmonic excitation. Both inplane deformation and inertia are considered in the formulation. Derivation of the harmonic force and nonlinear stiffness matrices for a beam and a rectangular plate element are presented. Solution procedures and convergence characteristics of the finite element method are described. Nonlinear response to uniform and concentrated harmonic loadings and improved nonlinear free vibration results are presented for beams and rectangular plates of various boundary conditions.

Analytical results for post-buckling behaviour of plates in compression and in shear

The postbuckling behavior of long rectangular isotropic and orthotropic plates is determined. By assuming trigonometric functions in one direction, the nonlinear partial differential equations of von Karman large deflection plate theory are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The ordinary differential equations are solved numerically using an available boundary value problem solver which makes use of Newton's method. Results for longitudinal compression show different postbuckling behavior between isotropic and orthotropic plates. Results for shear show that change in inplane edge constraints can cause large change in postbuckling stiffness.

Test results of a pumped two-phase mounting plate with ammonia

The design, fabrication, and testing of full-scale prototype units of a two-phase mounting plate (TPMP), which will be used in a two-phase ammonia-based thermal control system for a large spacecraft, are described. The mounting plate uses an evaporator design in which liquid is mechanically pumped through porous feed tubes within the plate. The prototype TPMPs were tested with ammonia at heat loads over 3000 W (3.2 W/sq cm) and local heat fluxes of up to 4 W/sq cm. Calculated total heat transfer coefficients from these tests were between 0.8 and 1.0 W/sq cm per C. This represents a better than twenty-fold improvement over comparable single-phase heat transfer coefficients. Design diagrams are included.

Remote measurement of in-plane diffusivity components in plates

A method of determining thermal diffusivity in thin plates is presented. The method, using infrared images of evolving thermal patterns previously injected with a laser, is noncontacting, one-sided, and remote. It does not require independent estimates of either the emissivity of the sample or the sample thickness. With a line-segment pattern for thermal input, it yields the inplane components of the diffusivity tensor in anisotropic materials and also the rate of heat loss to the environment of the plate. Two methods of data analysis are presented, one corresponding to a heating line of general cross section and the other considering a Gaussian cross section, thereby saving considerable computer time. Both methods produce a statistical evaluation of measurement quality as well as estimates of diffusivity and loss rate. Results are shown for plates of metals and graphite-epoxy composite materials. Principal components and orientation for the diffusivity tensor are obtained in the anisotropic graphite-epoxy sample.

Further generalization of an equivalent plate representation for aircraft structural analysis

Recent developments from a continuing effort to provide an equivalent plate representation for aircraft structural analysis are described. Previous work provided an equivalent plate analysis formulation that is capable of modeling aircraft wing structures with a general planform such as cranked wing boxes. However, the modeling is restricted to representing wing boxes having symmetric cross sections. Further developments, which are described in this paper, allow modeling of wing cross section having asymmetries that can arise from airfoil camber or from thicknesses being different in the upper and lower cover skins. An implementation of thermal loadings, which are described as temperature distributions over the planform of the cover skins, has been included. Spring supports have been added to provide for a more general set of boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented to assess the effect of wing camber on the static and dynamic response of an example wing structure under pressure and thermal loading. These results are compared with results from a finite element analysis program to indicate how well a cambered wing box can be represented with an equivalent plate formulation.

An approximate semi-analytical method for prediction of interlaminar shear stresses in an arbitrarily laminated thick plate

An approximate semianalytical method for determination of interlaminar shear stress distribution through the thickness of an arbitrarily laminated thick plate has been presented. The method is based on the assumptions of transverse inextensibility and layerwise constant shear angle theory (LCST) and utilizes an assumed quadratic displacement potential energy based finite element method (FEM). Centroid of the triangular surface has been proved from a rigorous mathematical point of view (Aubin-Nitsche theory), to be the point of exceptional accuracy for the interlaminar shear stresses. Numerical results indicate close agreement with the available three-dimensional elasticity theory solutions. A comparison between the present theory and that due to an assumed stress hybrid FEM suggest that the (normal) traction-free-edge condition is not satisfied in the latter approach. Furthermore, the present paper is the first to present the results for interlaminar shear stresses in a two-layer thick square plate of balanced unsymmetric angle-ply construction. A comparison with the recently proposed Equilibrium Method (EM) indicates the superiority of the present method, because the latter assures faster convergence as well as simultaneous vanishing of the transverse shear stresses on both of the exposed surfaces of the laminate. Superiority of the present method over the EM, in the case of a symmetric laminate, is limited to faster convergence alone. It has also been demonstrated that the combination of the present method and the reduced (quadratic order) numerical integration scheme yields convergence of the interlaminar shear stresses almost as rapidly as that of the nodal displacements, in the case of a thin plate.

Thermal stresses and buckling of elastic plates with reinforced edges

An approximation method based on the method of Kantorovich is used to calculate the critical thickness necessary to prevent thermal buckling of a rectangular cantilever plate with edge stiffeners. The case where no external loads are applied is considered, and the only stresses are those due to the prescribed thermal profile. Stiffeners are found to play an important role in the thermal buckling by affecting the overall distribution of the in-plane stresses within the plate. Results show that edge stiffeners can cause less or more buckling, and that in most situations the edge stiffeners hinder buckling because a thicker plate is required than if the stiffeners were not present.

Vector constraints on western U.S. deformation from space geodesy, neotectonics, and plate motions

The rate-of-slip vector on the San Andreas fault in central California estimated from geodetic and Holocene geological data is inconsistent with the prediction of rigid plate models such as RM2. This well-known 'San Andreas discrepancy' is diagnostic of plate deformation distributed both east of the fault in the Basin and Range and west of the fault along the California continental margin. Constraints on the integrated deformation rates across these two regions consistent with: (1) the kinematical boundary conditions imposed by the rigid plate model; (2) neotectonic and paleoseismic estimates of deformation rates; (3) ground-based geodetic measurements; and (4) rates of change observed by very long baseline interferometry along seven baselines to western U.S. sites are constructed. The space-geodetic data on Basin and Range extension taken over a 4-year interval are compatible with geological observations averaged over the Holocene; the best estimate of its integrated deformation rate, provided by the joint inversion of both data types, is 9.7 + or - 2.1 mm/yr, N 56 deg W + or - 10 deg, too small and in the wrong direction to account entirely for the San Andreas discrepancy. The integral of this deformation, estimated by subtracting the Basin and Range contribution from the discrepancy vector, requires significant right-lateral shear parallel to the San Andreas (13 + or - 5 mm/yr) and some compression perpendicular to it (9 + or - 3 mm/yr).

An efficient quadrilateral element for plate bending analysis

A simple, shear flexible, quadrilateral plate element is developed based on the Hellinger/Reissner mixed variational principle with independently assumed displacement and stress fields. The crucial point of the selection of appropriate stress parameters is emphasized in the formulation. For this purpose, a set of guidelines is formulated based on the follwoing considerations: (1) suppression of all kinematic deformation modes, (2) the element has a favorable value for the constraint index in the thin plate limit, and (3) element properties are frame-invariant. For computer implementation the components of the element stiffness matrix are evaluated analytically using the symbolic manipulation package MACSYMA. The effectiveness and practical usefulness of the proposed element are demonstrated by the numerical results of a variety of problems involving thin and moderately thick plates under different loading and support conditions.

Interaction of airborne and structure-borne noise radiated by plates

The interaction of airborne and structure-borne noise radiated by aircraft structures is studied analytically and experimentally for the case of noise radiating from thin, isotropic, rectangular aluminum plates as a result of fully coherent, combined acoustic and vibrational inputs. Attention is given to the great influence of the relative phase between inputs on the combined noise radiation characteristics of the plates; these phase-dependent effects, which are manifest as cross-terms in both the dynamic and acoustic portions of the analysis, can radically alter the combined sound power radiated by airframe structure plates. Such interactive effects have heretofore been neglected in analyses of results from analytical and experimental studies of propeller-driven aircraft interior noise.

Quantum efficiencies of imaging detectors with alkali halide photocathodes. I - Microchannel plates with separate and integral CsI photocathodes

Measurements and comparisons have been made of the quantum efficiencies of microchannel plate (MCP) detectors in the far-UV (below 2000-A) wavelength range using CsI photocathodes (a) deposited on the front surfaces of microchannel plates and (b) deposited on solid substrates as opaque photocathodes with the resulting photoelectrons input to microchannel plates. The efficiences were measured in both pulse-counting and photodiode modes of operation. Typical efficiencies are about 15 percent at 1216 A for a CsI-coated MCP compared with 65 percent for an opaque CsI photocathode MCP detector. Special processing has yielded an efficiency as high as 20 percent for a CsI-coated MCP. This may possibly be further improved by optimization of the tilt angle of the MCP channels relative to the front face of the MCP and incident radiation. However, at present there still remains a factor of at least 3 quantum efficiency advantage in the separate opaque CsI photocathode configuration.

Radiative and free-convective heat transfer from a finite horizontal plate inside an enclosure

An experimental and analytical investigation of heat transfer from a horizontal, thin, square plate inside of an enclosure was carried out. Experimental results were obtained from both the upward-facing and the downward-facing sides of the heated plate. Starting with the integrated momentum and energy equations, approximate solutions were obtained for heat transfer in the laminar and the turbulent regime that correlate well with experimental data. Radiative heat transfer correction was given special attention. Effects of the enclosure-related recirculation of the test fluid, as well as effects of simultaneous heat transfer on both sides of the plate, caused an early transition, and indicated a high level of internal turbulence.

Acousto-ultrasonic input-output characterization of unidirectional fiber composite plate by SV waves

A unidirectional fiberglass epoxy compostie specimen is modelled as a homogeneous transversely isotropic continuum plate medium. Acousto-ultrasonic noncontact input-output characterization is studied theoretically with a transmitting and a receiving transducer located on the same face of the plate. The single reflection problem for an incident SV wave at a plane boundary in transversely isotropic medium is analyzed. An obliquely incident SV wave results in a reflected SV wave and a reflected P wave for an angle of incidence of the incident SV wave less than the critical angle. Otherwise, there exists only an SV wave in the medium as the reflected P wave degenerates into a surface wave travelling parallel to the plane boundary. The amplitude ratio of the reflected SV wave is -1 when the angle of incidence is greater than or = the critical angle. The directional dependence of the phase velocity of the SV wave propagating in the transversely isotropic medium has a significant effect on the delay time, as opposed to the directional independence of the phase velocity of a shear wave propagating in an isotropic medium. The displacements associated with the SV wave in the plate and which may be detected by the noncontact receiving transducer are approximated by an asymptotic solution for an infinite transversely isotropic medium subjected to a harmonic point load.

Tectonics of the Nazca-Antarctic plate boundary

A new bathymetric chart of part of the Chile transform system is constructed, based mainly on an R/V Endeavor survey from 100 deg W to its intersection with the East Ridge of the Juan Fernandez microplate. A generally continuous lineated trend can be followed through the entire region, with the transform valley being relatively narrow and well-defined from 109 deg W to approximately 104 deg 30 min W. The fracture zone then widens to the east, with at least two probable en echelon offsets to the south at 104 deg and 102 deg W. Six new strike-slip mechanisms along the Chile Transform and one normal fault mechanism near the northern end of the Chile Rise, inverted together with other plate-motion data from the eastern portion of the boundary, produce a new best-fit Euler pole for the Nazca-Antarctic plate pair, providing tighter constraints on the relative plate motions.

Comparison of boundary-layer transition on a cone and flat plate at Mach 3.5

NASA-Langley's Pilot Low-Disturbance Tunnel has been used to obtain boundary layer transition data on a cone and flat plate at Mach 3.5. The transition Reynolds numbers measured under these low noise conditions are higher than those in conventional noisy tunnels by a factor of 3 in the case of the cone and of seven in that of the flat plate. Transition predictions based on compressible linear stability theory and the e exp N method, for N=10, are in excellent agreement with the measured locations with transition onset for both the cone and flat plate under these low noise conditions.
