Initial results from the ISEE-1 and -2 plasma wave investigation

A survey of initial results from the plasma-wave investigation on the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft is presented. The plasma-wave instruments employed are designed to provide measurements of the electric and magnetic fields of plasma waves over the frequency range from about 5 Hz to 300 kHz. Several representative satellite passes are analyzed in detail and discussed. The results considered are shown to demonstrate the very high-quality data being obtained with the instruments and to illustrate the wide range of magnetospheric plasma-physics problems that can be treated with the ISEE spacecraft. Comparisons of plasma-wave spectra between the two spacecraft are performed which indicate the great advantages of using two spacecraft in similar orbits to unravel the complex spatial and temporal variations that occur in the magnetosphere.

On-orbit control system performance of the HEAO-2 observatory

The on-orbit performance of the High Energy Astronomy Observatory is described. The control system utilizes precision gyros for attitude reference and skewed reaction wheels controlled by a reprogrammable computer. The observatory points at selected targets, maneuvers automatically and acquires guide stars for updating at each target. Performance data indicates maneuver accuracies less than one arc minute and pointing accuracies of 2-5 arc seconds. Use of 7th-9th magnitude guide stars has resulted in several improper updates caused by 'flat-field' stray light effects in the star trackers. The method used to discriminate true stars from the flat-field is also presented.

A Conceptual Design Study on the Application of Liquid Metal Heat Transfer Technology to the Solar Thermal Power Plant

Alkali metal heat transfer technology was used in the development of conceptual designs for the transport and storage of sensible and latent heat thermal energy in distributed concentrator, solar Stirling power conversion systems at a power level of 15 kWe per unit. Both liquid metal pumped loop and heat pipe thermal transport were considered; system configurations included: (1) an integrated, focal mounted sodium heat pipe solar receiver (HPSR) with latent heat thermal energy storage; (2) a liquid sodium pumped loop with the latent heat storage, Stirling engine-generator, pump and valves located on the back side of the concentrator; and (3) similar pumped loops serving several concentrators with more centralized power conversion and storage. The focus mounted HPSR was most efficient, lightest and lowest in estimated cost. Design confirmation testing indicated satisfactory performance at all angles of inclination of the primary heat pipes to be used in the solar receiver.

Teetered, tip-controlled rotor: Preliminary test results from Mod-0 100-kW experimental wind turbine

Results of tests conducted using the MOD-0 100 kW experimental wind turbine are evaluated. The teetered rotor significantly decreased loads on the yaw drive mechanism and reduced blade cyclic flapwise bending moments by 25 percent at the 20 percent span location when compared to the rigid hub rotor. The teetered hub performed well, but impacted the teeter stops on occasion as wind speed and/or direction varied rapidly. The tip-controlled rotor performed satisfactorily with some expected loss of control when compared to the full span pitchable blade. The performance results indicate that a review of techniques used to calculate rotor power is in order.

The dish-Rankine SCSTPE program (Engineering Experiment no. 1)

Activities planned for phase 2 Of the Small Community Solar Thermal Power Experiment (PFDR) program are summarized with emphasis on a dish-Rankine point focusing distributed receiver solar thermal electric system. Major design efforts include: (1) development of an advanced concept indirect-heated receiver;(2) development of hardware and software for a totally unmanned power plant control system; (3) implementation of a hybrid digital simulator which will validate plant operation prior to field testing; and (4) the acquisition of an efficient organic Rankine cycle power conversion unit. Preliminary performance analyses indicate that a mass-produced dish-Rankine PFDR system is potentially capable of producing electricity at a levelized busbar energy cost of 60 to 70 mills per KWh and with a capital cost of about $1300 per KW.

Charge injection device as a candidate sensor for stellar tracking

Charge transfer devices (CTDs) are superior to the image dissector as stellar tracking sensors, considering their low voltage requirements, insensitivity to magnetic fields, good linearity, and low weight and power. An analysis of one type of CTD, called the charge injection device (CID), revealed an X-Y addressing capability which provides exceptional flexibility in array readout and results in enhanced S/N capability, a surface channel device which produces a larger dynamic range of operation, and exceptional and unique tolerance to optical overloads. A 128 row by 128 column CID array processed on silicon was evaluated in a cooled breadboard camera, and measured results indicate projected performance parameters of a large area CID array as follows: 20 micron square sensing site, noise not greater than 25 carriers per pixel, quantum yield of approximately 40% from 0.4 to 1.0 micron, and cooling requirements on the order of 0 degrees C.

Advanced propulsion system concept for hybrid vehicles

A series hybrid system, utilizing a free piston Stirling engine with a linear alternator, and a parallel hybrid system, incorporating a kinematic Stirling engine, are analyzed for various specified reference missions/vehicles ranging from a small two passenger commuter vehicle to a van. Parametric studies for each configuration, detail tradeoff studies to determine engine, battery and system definition, short term energy storage evaluation, and detail life cycle cost studies were performed. Results indicate that the selection of a parallel Stirling engine/electric, hybrid propulsion system can significantly reduce petroleum consumption by 70 percent over present conventional vehicles.

Performance calculations for 200-1000 MWe MHD/steam power plants

The effects of MHD generator length, level of oxygen enrichment, and oxygen production power on the performance of MHD/steam power plants ranging from 200 to 1000 MW in electrical output are investigated. The plants considered use oxygen enriched combustion air preheated to 1100 F. Both plants in which the MHD generator is cooled with low temperature and pressure boiler feedwater and plants in which the generator is cooled with high temperature and pressure boiler feedwater are considered. For plants using low temperature boiler feedwater for generator cooling the maximum thermodynamic efficiency is obtained with shorter generators and a lower level of oxygen enrichment compared to plants using high temperature boiler feedwater for generator cooling. The generator length at which the maximum plant efficiency occurs increases with power plant size for plants with a generator cooled by low temperature feedwater. Also shown is the relationship of the magnet stored energy requirement of the generator length and the power plant performance. Possible cost/performance tradeoffs between magnet cost and plant performance are indicated.

Development, implementation, and test results on integrated optics switching matrix

A small integrated optics switching matrix, which was developed, implemented, and tested, indicates high performance. The matrix serves as a model for the design of larger switching matrices. The larger integrated optics switching matrix should form the integral part of a switching center with high data rate throughput of up to 300 megabits per second. The switching matrix technique can accomplish the design goals of low crosstalk and low distortion. About 50 illustrations help explain and depict the many phases of the integrated optics switching matrix. Many equations used to explain and calculate the experimental data are also included.

An imaging telescope for high energy gamma-ray astronomy

Recent tests of a gamma-ray imaging telescope, which incorporated a coded aperture mask and multiwire proportional counter system produced good images of a tritium target source which was used to generate the 20 MeV protons at a proton Van de Graaff accelerator. This paper indicates what performance might be expected if a large area drift chamber were used in conjunction with a coded aperture mask. The prospects for achieving significant scientific results if such a system were flown on a variety of space vehicles are discussed.

Centaur D-1A guidance/software system

The main body of this paper describes the evolution of the Centaur D-1A Guidance and Software System. Specifically, the performance of the explicit guidance equations, using a linear tangent steering law. Inherent flexibility exists in the equations in that they have multimission capability. They can accommodate both Earth-orbital and Earth-escape missions with either one or two Centaur burns. They can also guide for multi-burn orbital missions. The Centaur performance is indicated in terms of optimality (propellant usage), accuracy, flexibility and computer requirements. In the course of the Centaur Guidance development substantial changes and improvements have been made and more improvements are on the way for the Shuttle/Centaur Guidance. It is the intent of this paper to describe, provide insight into, and identify certain unique aspects of the individual Centaur flight profiles. Mission profile(s) are described narratively with some numerical data given in cases where it may be useful.

Evaluation and development of new VAS remote sensing algorithms

An algorithm, developed to permit the simultaneous retrieval of temperature/moisture profiles and surface skin temperature by direct analytical solution of the radiative transfer equation, alleviates the problem associated with the interdependencies of water vapor retrieval on temperature retrieval and their dependencies on surface emissions. Simultaneous solution of all these quantities is achieved in one calculation using the available radiance observations. Since only a single matrix inversion is required for the specification of all parameters, the solution is computationally efficient. Ancillary observations of temperature and/or moisture from surface sensors on aircraft can be readily incorporated into the solution. Simulation tests of the method indicate improved performance over the previous iterative technique, particularly for the lower troposphere and for water vapor.
