Development of beam leaded low power logic circuits

The technologies of low power TTL and beam lead processing were merged into a single product family. This family offers the power and thermal advantages of low power(54L), while providing the additional reliability advantages of beam leads. The reduction in the power and heat levels also allows the system designer to take advantage, through beam lead, multichip assemblies, of increased package density to reduce system size and weight.

Asymptotic theory of a slender rotating beam with end masses.

The method of matched asymptotic expansions is employed to solve the singular perturbation problem of the vibrations of a rotating beam of small flexural rigidity with concentrated end masses. The problem is complicated by the appearance of the eigenvalue in the boundary conditions. Eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are developed as power series in the perturbation parameter beta to the 1/2 power, and results are given for mode shapes and eigenvalues through terms of the order of beta.

Multipath propagation study for L-band, over-ocean, satellite-aircraft communication link

The results are presented of a study of multipath propagation between an aeronautical relay satellite in synchronous earth orbit and an aircraft flying over the ocean. An analytical model for the reflected power is developed and the results of a computer solution are compared with an approximate solution obtained through integration by the method of steepest descent. The computer solution is shown to differ considerably from the approximate solution. Both methods are compared with the limited experimental results available.

The design and development of a high voltage power supply

A high voltage circuit system was redesigned, breadboarded, and tested to meet revised specification requirements. Circuit component subassemblies are described and include the firing unit, regulator, dc to dc converter, and output and trigger circuits. Design changes, tests, and equipment fabrication are outlined chronologically by month. A list of design specifications is included.

Solid state remote power controllers for 120 Vdc power systems

Solid state Remote Power Controllers (RPCs) developed for use in any dc power system with voltage up to 120 Vdc and distributed power up to 3.6 kW per bus are described. The RPCs were demonstrated to be reliable, 99 percent efficient, comparatively simple, and potentially low in cost. Advantages of the RPCs include: contactless switching; controlled rates of current rise and fall; current limiting; and fast, well-defined, repeatable response to overloads and faults.

Development of a solar-powered residential air conditioner

The initial objective of the program was the optimization (in terms of cost and performance) of a Rankine cycle mechanical refrigeration system which utilizes thermal energy from a flat solar collector for air conditioning residential buildings. However, feasibility investigations of the adsorption process revealed that a dessicant-type air conditioner offers many significant advantages. As a result, limited efforts were expended toward the optimization of such a system.

Gate-assisted turn-off thyristor

1,000-volt, 200-ampere gate-assisted turn-off thyristor has been developed for power circuits requiring high efficiency, small size, and low weight. Design features include shunted cathode for high dV/dt capability. Cathode in interdigitated with dynamic gate for fast, low-loss switching. Operating frequency exceeds 20 kHz with overall energy dissipation of less that 12 mJ per pulse for typical 20-microsecond half-sine waveform. Device has turn-on time of 2 microseconds and turn-off time as short as 3 microseconds with only 2 amperes of gate drive.

Hybrid ECG signal conditioner

Circuit with high common-mode rejection has ability to filter and amplify accepted analog electrocardiogram (ECG) signals of varying amplitude, shape, and polarity. In addition, low power circuit develops standardized pulses that can be counted and averaged by heart/breath rate processor.
