Hand-Held Electronic Gap-Measuring Tools

Repetitive measurements simplified by tool based on LVDT operation. With fingers in open position, Gap-measuring tool rests on digital readout instrument. With fingers inserted in gap, separation alters inductance of linear variable-differential transformer in plastic handle. Originally developed for measuring gaps between surface tiles of Space Shuttle orbiter, tool reduces measurement time from 20 minutes per tile to 2 minutes. Also reduces possibility of damage to tiles during measurement. Tool has potential applications in mass production; helps ensure proper gap dimensions in assembly of refrigerator and car doors and also used to measure dimensions of components and to verify positional accuracy of components during progressive assembly operations.

The development and test of ultra-large-format multi-anode microchannel array detector systems

The specific tasks that were accomplished with each of the key elements of the multi-anode microchannel array detector system are described. The modes of operation of position-sensitive electronic readout systems for use with high-gain microchannel plates are described and their performance characteristics compared and contrasted. Multi-anode microchannel array detector systems with formats as large as 256 x 1024 pixels are currently under evaluation. Preliminary performance data for sealed ultraviolet and visible-light detector tubes show that the detector systems have unique characteristics which make them complementary to photoconductive array detectors, such as CCDs, and superior to alternative pulse-counting detector systems employing high-gain MCPs.

Factors affecting dwell times on digital displaying

A series of exploratory tests were conducted to investigate the effects of advanced display formats and display media on pilot scanning behavior using Langley's oculometer, a desktop flight simulator, a conventional electro-mechanical meter, and various digital displays. The primary task was for the test subject to maintain level flight, on a specific course heading, during moderate turbulence. A secondary task of manually controlling the readout of a display was used to examine the effects of the display format on a subject's scan behavior. Secondary task scan parameters that were evaluated were average dwell time, dwell time histograms, and number of dwells per meter change. The round dial meter demonstrated shorter dwell times and fewer dwells per meter change than the digital displays. The following factors affected digital display scanning behavior: (1) the number of digits; (2) the update rate of the digits; (3) the display media; and (4) the character font. The size of the digits used in these tests (0.28 to 0.50 inches) did not affect scan behavior measures.

A comparison of electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry and electronic heterodyne holographic interferometry for flow measurements

Electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry and electronic heterodyne holographic interferometry are compared as methods for the accurate measurement of refractive index and density change distributions of phase objects. Experimental results are presented to show that the two methods have comparable accuracy for measuring the first derivative of the interferometric fringe shift. The phase object for the measurements is a large crystal of KD*P, whose refractive index distribution can be changed accurately and repeatably for the comparison. Although the refractive index change causes only about one interferometric fringe shift over the entire crystal, the derivative shows considerable detail for the comparison. As electronic phase measurement methods, both methods are very accurate and are intrinsically compatible with computer controlled readout and data processing. Heterodyne moire is relatively inexpensive and has high variable sensitivity. Heterodyne holographic interferometry is better developed, and can be used with poor quality optical access to the experiment.

Operation of integrating indium antimonide linear arrays at 65 K and below

The combination of a FET switch non-CCD readout architecture with high-quality mesa-photovoltaic indium-antimonide detector material has led to high-performance integrating linear imagers in the 1- to 5-micron region. These devices operate in the temperature regime below 100 K and provide very good dark current and responsivity uniformity (+ or - 2 percent). Test data will show performance at 65 K for a 512-element array and 46 K for a 128-element array. Useful integration times of 3600 seconds at 46 K and greater than 12 seconds at 65 K have been achieved. For both devices, kTC read noise levels of less than 1200 electrons have been measured.

Operation of a microchannel plate counting system in a mass spectrometer

A multiplier detector system has been developed as part of a mass spectrometer in an ion counting mode. During its operation ions striking a microchannel plate release pulses of electrons which are accelerated to a phosphor layer. The resulting flash of light is carried by a fiber-optic bundle to a photodiode array. The detector simultaneously counts ions throughout a mass spectrum covering more than 30 amu. It extends the mass spectrometer's operation toward low count rates for trace gas analysis. Each mass peak can be independently measured at count rates between 0.1 and 1000 counts/s. Higher rates on a few peaks do not blind the entire detector. The detector's capabilities have been demonstrated by measuring Kr and Xe isotopes in air at natural abundances. The mass spectrometer, detector, and readout electronics are sufficiently compact to permit use in a balloon-borne experiment.

Physics and design of advanced IR bolometers and photoconductors

The state-of-the-art in photoconductors and bolometers is reviewed, centering on the materials development and concepts of extrinsic Si and Ge devices. It is suggested that in the field of 2-D detector arrays the hybrid circuits containing a photoconductor or a photodiode array, bonded with In solder to a switched MOS readout device with up to 60 x 60 elements, will produce superior performance. Other systems discussed include charge-coupled devices, developed for visible-light imaging and adapted to IR imaging, and charge-injection devices, a monolithic combination of a standard photoconductor and a metal-insulator-semiconductor capacitor. Finally, it is pointed out that a nonequilibrium theory of bolometer noise demonstrates the possibility of reducing the traditionally accepted noise limits by 60 percent for Johnson noise and 30 percent for the noise from phonons in the thermal link of the bolometer.

Time and space integrating acousto-optic folded spectrum processing for SETI

Time and space integrating folded spectrum techniques utilizing acousto-optic devices (AOD) as 1-D input transducers are investigated for a potential application as wideband, high resolution, large processing gain spectrum analyzers in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence (SETI) program. The space integrating Fourier transform performed by a lens channels the coarse spectral components diffracted from an AOD onto an array of time integrating narrowband fine resolution spectrum analyzers. The pulsing action of a laser diode samples the interferometrically detected output, aliasing the fine resolution components to baseband, as required for the subsequent charge coupled devices (CCD) processing. The raster scan mechanism incorporated into the readout of the CCD detector array is used to unfold the 2-D transform, reproducing the desired high resolution Fourier transform of the input signal.

DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) microburst on August 2, 1985

The features of the microburst on August 2, 1985, related to the Delta 191 accident during the approach to Runway 17L of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport is described. Both radar and satellite data, along with ground-based measurements, were used in determining the characteristics of the parent cloud which spawned the most complicated microburst winds ever analyzed by the author. The detailed reconstruction of the airflow and the aircraft's maneuver were made possible by a series of computer analyses of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) readout. Both measured and computed values in color diagrams that can be evaluated readily by meteorologists, pilots, structural engineers, and other interested persons in preventing microburst-related accidents in future years are presented.

Development of the EXITE detector - A new imaging detector for 20 - 300 keV astronomy

The development and testing of a detector to be used in the Energetic X-ray Imaging Telescope Experiment (EXITE) are reported. It consists of a 34 cm diameter NaI(Tl) crystal coupled directly to a single large image intensifier tube with associated silicon PIN diode readout. The measured spatial and energy resolutions at 122 keV are 6mm (FWHM) and 9 percent (FWHM), respectively. This energy resolution is about 50 percent better than that of any previously flown hard X-ray experiment. These resolutions decrease with the square root of the energy of the incident X-ray, indicating that they are determined by the number of photons emitted in the NaI(Tl) scintillator light flash.

Investigation of CCD-digicon detector system characteristics

The reported investigation was undertaken with the aim to develop state-of-the-art detector technology for use in astronomical observations. Basic properties of the Digicon concept are to be extended to the two-dimensional capabilities of CCDs. The basic CCD-Digicon tube configuration utilizes a thinned, backside-illuminated CCD in place of the linear, discrete diode array at the back end of a windowed space telescope (ST) design Digicon tube. It is pointed out that the detector system built around the considered device promises to exhibit high photometric accuracy in combination with large numbers of uniform independent resolution elements. Potential applications include space astronomy missions with capability for observations extending into the extreme ultraviolet spectral region. Attention is given to continuing investigations into the characteristics of CCD response to backside photoelectron bombardment, taking into account the development of charge pulse centroiding readout techniques in combination with magnetic deflection substepping.
