Preparation, verification, and operational control of a large space-environment-simulation chamber for contamination sensitive tests

A 2-year program to prepare chamber A at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center for Apollo telescope mount thermal-vacuum tests is discussed. This program covers modification to existing chamber systems, the development of facility and chamber operating procedures, the selection of chamber cleaning and control methods, and the development and evaluation of diagnostic instrumentation. Extensive efforts to ensure a minimum contamination environment for the Apollo telescope mount test series are illustrated. Recent thermal-vacuum tests of this chamber at progressive stages of cleanliness have demonstrated the success achieved in reducing the particulate and molecular contamination levels of the basic chamber interior.

Development of four-dimensional atmospheric models and application techniques for space mission simulation.

The major objective of the four-dimensional atmospheric model program is to provide global profiles of moisture, temperature, pressure, and density from the surface to 25 km altitude. These models may then be used as input to the attenuation models for the purpose of simulating earth resource missions. Aspects of data processing are discussed together with homogeneous moisture regions, details regarding four-dimensional atmospheric models, and mission simulation procedures.-

Experiments leading to the production of new glasses in space

A number of oxide compositions were prepared as ceramic rods which were melted in a CO2 laser beam while spinning. The molten droplets which were spun off the rods were allowed to free-fall cool. Many of the compositions selected were obtained as glasses of never-before-reported composition. It can be concluded that it is possible to obtain spherules of glasses from oxide compositions that have never before been obtained in the 'glassy state.' These initial experiments encourage future attempts to prepare larger sized glass boules by containerless melting and cooling in space or in appropriately simulated space.

Changes in erythropoietin levels during space flight or space flight simulation

Two hundred and seventy samples from 24 subjects involved in 3 bedrest studies and from 3 subjects involved in Spacelab Mission Development Test 3 were assayed for erythropoietin (Ep), in an in vitro fetal mouse liver cell assay, and for ferritin using a commercially available immunoradiometric assay kit. No trends or significant changes in serum Ep were observed. Serum ferritin concentrations tended to increases slightly during the 'missions', reflecting a redirection of iron from the suppressed erythron into iron stores.

Advanced Space Shuttle simulation model

A non-recursive model (based on von Karman spectra) for atmospheric turbulence along the flight path of the shuttle orbiter was developed. It provides for simulation of instantaneous vertical and horizontal gusts at the vehicle center-of-gravity, and also for simulation of instantaneous gusts gradients. Based on this model the time series for both gusts and gust gradients were generated and stored on a series of magnetic tapes, entitled Shuttle Simulation Turbulence Tapes (SSTT). The time series are designed to represent atmospheric turbulence from ground level to an altitude of 120,000 meters. A description of the turbulence generation procedure is provided. The results of validating the simulated turbulence are described. Conclusions and recommendations are presented. One-dimensional von Karman spectra are tabulated, while a discussion of the minimum frequency simulated is provided. The results of spectral and statistical analyses of the SSTT are presented.

Three-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Simulation of Space Shuttle Main Propulsion 17-inch Disconnect Valves

A steady incompressible three-dimensional viscous flow analysis has been conducted for the Space Shuttle external tank/orbiter propellant feed line disconnect flapper valves with upstream elbows. The Navier-Stokes code, INS3D, is modified to handle interior obstacles and a simple turbulence model. The flow solver is tested for stability and convergence in the presence of interior flappers. An under-relaxation scheme has been incorporated to improve the solution stability. Important flow characteristics such as secondary flows, recirculation, vortex and wake regions, and separated flows are observed. Computed values for forces, moments, and pressure drop are in satisfactory agreement with water flow test data covering a maximum tube Reynolds number of 3.5 million. The predicted hydrodynamical stability of the flappers correlates well with the measurements.

Application of the Chimera overlapped grid scheme to simulation of Space Shuttle ascent flows

Several issues relating to the application of Chimera overlapped grids to complex geometries and flowfields are discussed. These include the addition of geometric components with different grid topologies, gridding for intersecting pieces of geometry, and turbulence modeling in grid overlap regions. Sample results are presented for transonic flow about the Space Shuttle launch vehicle. Comparisons with wind tunnel and flight measured pressures are shown.
