Field-induced topological Hall effect and double-fan spin structure with a $c$-axis component in the metallic kagome antiferromagnetic compound YMn 6 Sn 6

Geometric frustration in the kagome lattice makes it a great host for the flat electronic band, nontrivial topological properties, and novel magnetism. In this work, we use magnetotransport measurements to map out the field-temperature phase diagram of the centrosymmetric YMn 6 Sn 6 with a Mn kagome lattice and show that the system exhibits the topological Hall effect (THE) with an in-plane applied magnetic field around 240 K. In addition, our neutron diffraction results demonstrate that the observed THE cannot arise from a magnetic skyrmion lattice, but instead from an in-plane field-induced double-fan spin structure with c-axis components. This paper provides a platform to understand the influence of a field-induced novel magnetic structure on magnetoelectric response in topological kagome metals.

Evidence for deconfined U(1) gauge theory at the transition between toric code and double semion

Building on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the phase diagram of a one-parameter Hamiltonian interpolating between trivial and topological Ising paramagnets in two dimensions, which are dual to the toric code and the double semion. We discover an intermediate phase with stripe order which spontaneously breaks the protecting Ising symmetry. Remarkably, we find evidence that this intervening phase is gapless due to the incommensurability of the stripe pattern and that it is dual to a $U(1)$ gauge theory exhibiting Cantor deconfinement.

Melting of magnesium oxide up to two terapascals using double-shock compression

Constraining the melting behavior of magnesium oxide, a major constituent of gaseous and rocky planets, is key to benchmarking their evolutionary models. Using a double-shock technique, we extended the MgO melt curve measurements to 2 TPa; this is twice the pressure achieved by previous melting experiments on any material. A temperature plateau is observed between 1218 and 1950 GPa in the second shock states, which is attributed to latent heat of melting. At 1950 GPa, the measured melting temperature is 17,600 K, 17% lower than recent theoretical predictions. Furthermore, the melting curve is steeper than that of MgSiO 3 , indicating that MgO is likely solid in the interior of Saturn-sized gas giants and extra-solar super-Earth planets.

Prediction of double-Weyl points in the iron-based superconductor CaKFe 4 As 4

Employing a combination of symmetry analysis, low-energy modeling, and ab initio simulations, we predict the presence of magnetic-field-induced Weyl points close to the Fermi level in CaKFe 4 As 4 . Depending on the relative strengths of the magnetic field and of the spin-orbit coupling, the Weyl fermions can carry a topological charge of ±1 or ±2, making CaKFe 4 As 4 a rare realization of a double-Weyl semimetal. Here, we further predict experimental manifestations of these Weyl points, both in bulk properties, such as the anomalous Hall effect, and in surface properties, such as the emergence of prominent Fermi arcs. Because CaKFe 4 As 4 displays unconventional fully gapped superconductivity below 30 K, our findings open a route to investigate the interplay between superconductivity and Weyl fermions.

Observation of broken inversion and chiral symmetries in the pseudogap phase in single- and double-layer bismuth-based cuprates

We deduce the symmetry of the pseudogap phase in the single- and double-layer bismuth-based cuprate superconductors, where charge and pseudogap order onset concurrently, by measuring and analyzing their circular and linear photogalvanic responses, which are related linearly to the chirality and inversion breaking, respectively, of the order parameter. After separating out the trivial contribution arising from the surface where inversion symmetry is already broken, we show that both responses start below the pseudogap temperature T* and grow below it to a sizable magnitude, revealing the broken symmetries in the bulk of the crystal. Through a detailed analysis of the dependence of the signals on the angle of incidence, the polarization of the light, and the orientation of the crystal, we are able to discover that the point group symmetry below T* is limited to mm2 or mm21– groups. Here, taking into account formation of domains and previous measurements, our results narrow down the possible symmetries of the microscopic origin of the phase transition(s) at T*, which leads to the conclusion that while charge order may affect the observed symmetry it is not the main cause of the pseudogap order parameter.

Characterization of dot-specific and tunable effective g factors in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot single-hole device

Difference in g factors in multidot structures can form the basis of dot-selective spin manipulation under global microwave irradiation. Here employing electric dipole spin resonance facilitated by strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), we observe differences in the extracted values of the single-hole effective g factors of the constituent quantum dots of a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot device at the level of ~ 5 %–10%. We examine the continuous change in the hole g factor with electrical detuning over a wide range of interdot tunnel couplings and for different out-of-plane magnetic fields. The observed tendency of the quantum dot effective g factors to steadily increase on decreasing the interdot coupling or on increasing the magnetic field is attributed to the impact on the SOI of changing the dot confinement potential and heavy-hole light-hole mixing.

Characterizing random-singlet state in two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets and implications for the double perovskite Sr 2 CuTe 1 – x W x O 6

Motivated by the experimental observation of a nonmagnetic phase in compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of a spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor J 1 and next-nearest-neighbor J 2 couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on a cylinder system with a circumference of up to ten lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing J 2 /J 1 in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin-glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random-singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of nonmagnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. Here, we also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr 2 CuTe 1–x W x O 6 .

Structural and double magnetic transitions in the frustrated spin- 1 2 capped-kagome antiferromagnet ( RbCl ) Cu 5 P 2 O 10

The structural and magnetic properties of the geometrically frustrated spin- 1 2 capped-kagome antiferromagnet (RbCl) Cu 5 P 2 O 10 are investigated via temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P NMR experiments on a polycrystalline sample. It undergoes a structural transition at around T t ≃ 310 K from a high-temperature trigonal (P ¯3m1) to a low-temperature monoclinic (C2/c) unit cell, where the low-temperature structure features the capped-kagome geometry of Cu 2+ ions. Interestingly, it shows the onset of two successive magnetic transitions at T N1 ≃ 20 K and T N2 ≃ 7 K. The shape of the 31 P NMR spectra unfolds the possible nature of the transitions below T N1 and T N2 to be of incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic type, respectively. A large value of the Curie-Weiss temperature as compared to T N1 sets the frustration parameter f ≃ 8, ensuring strong magnetic frustration in the compound. From the 31 P NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate, the leading antiferromagnetic exchange coupling is estimated to be J/k B ≃ 117 K. Furthermore, these unusual double magnetic transitions make this compound beguiling for further investigations.

Magnetic properties of the double trillium lattice antiferromagnet KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3

Trillium lattices formed by corner-shared triangular units are the platform for magnetic frustration in three dimensions. Herein, we report structural and magnetic properties of the Cr-based (S = 3/2) double trillium lattice material KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 studied by x-ray diffraction, dc and ac magnetization, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements complemented by density-functional band-structure calculations. Magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P NMR measurements reveal the magnetic transition at T N⁢1 ≃ 12.5 K in zero field followed by another transition (T N⁢2 ) at low temperatures in weak applied fields. The 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate in the ordered state follows the T 3 behavior indicative of the two-magnon Raman process. Finally, the spin lattice of KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 comprises two crystallographically nonequivalent ferromagnetic sublattices that are coupled antiferromagnetically, thus eliminating frustration in this trillium network and leading to weak ferromagnetism in the vicinity of T N⁢1 .

Application of an efficient generator-coordinate subspace-selection algorithm to neutrinoless double- β decay

The generator coordinate method begins with the variational construction of a set of nonorthogonal mean-field states that span a subspace of the full many-body Hilbert space. These states are then often projected onto states with good quantum numbers to restore symmetries, leading to a set with members that can be similar to one another, and it is sometimes possible to reduce this set without greatly affecting results. Here, we propose a greedy algorithm that we call the energy-transition-orthogonality procedure (ENTROP) to select subsets of important states. As applied here, the approach selects on the basis of diagonal energy, orthogonality, and contribution to the matrix element that governs neutrinoless double-β decay. We present both shell-model and preliminary ab initio calculations of this matrix element for the decay of 76Ge, with quadrupole deformation parameters and the isoscalar pairing strength as generator coordinates. ENTROP converges quickly, reducing significantly the number of basis states needed for an accurate calculation.

Constraints on partial half-lives of 136 Ce and 138 Ce double electron captures

The γ-ray emissions from a radiopure cerium-bromide crystal with a mass of 4381 g were measured for a total of 497.4 d by means of high-resolution γ-ray spectrometry in the HADES underground laboratory at a depth of 500 m.w.e. A search for 0/2νϵϵ and 0/2νϵβ + double beta decay transitions of 136 Ce and 13 8Ce was performed using Bayesian analysis techniques. No signals were observed for a total of 35 investigated decay modes. 90% credibility limits were set in the order of 10 18 -10 19 yr. Existing constraints from a cerium oxide powder measurement were tested with a different cerium compound and half-life limits could be improved for most of the decay modes. The most likely accessible decay mode of the 136 Ce 2νϵϵ transition into the $0_{1}^{+}$ state of 136 Ba results in a new best 90% credibility limit of 5.0×10 18 yr.

Double-differential inclusive charged-current ν μ cross sections on hydrocarbon in MINERvA at ( E ν ) ~ 3.5 GeV

MINERvA reports inclusive charged-current cross sections for muon neutrinos on hydrocarbon in the NuMI beamline. We measured the double-differential cross section in terms of the longitudinal and transverse muon momenta, as well as the single-differential cross sections in those variables. The data used in this analysis correspond to an exposure of 3.34×10 20 protons on target with a peak neutrino energy of approximately 3.5 GeV. Measurements are compared to the GENIE, NuWro and GiBUU neutrino cross-section predictions, as well as a version of GENIE modified to produce better agreement with prior exclusive MINERvA measurements. None of the models or variants were able to successfully reproduce the data across the entire phase space, which includes areas dominated by each interaction channel.

Measurements of the $W$ boson rapidity, helicity, double-differential cross sections, and charge asymmetry in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt {s}$ = 13 TeV

The differential cross section and charge asymmetry for inclusive W boson production at s=13 TeV is measured for the two transverse polarization states as a function of the W boson absolute rapidity. The measurement uses events in which a W boson decays to a neutrino and either a muon or an electron. The data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The differential cross section and its value normalized to the total inclusive W boson production cross section are measured over the rapidity range |yW|<2.5. In addition to the total fiducial cross section, the W boson double-differential cross section, d2σ/dpTℓd|ηℓ|, and the charge asymmetry are measured as functions of the charged lepton transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The precision of these measurements is used to constrain the parton distribution functions of the proton using the next-to-leading order NNPDF3.0 set.

Ameliorating the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition in spherical coordinates: A double FFT filter method for general relativistic MHD in dynamical spacetimes

Numerical simulations of merging compact objects and their remnants form the theoretical foundation for gravitational wave and multimessenger astronomy. While Cartesian-coordinate-based adaptive mesh refinement is commonly used for simulations, spherical-like coordinates are more suitable for nearly spherical remnants and azimuthal flows due to lower numerical dissipation in the evolution of fluid angular momentum, as well as requiring fewer numbers of computational cells. However, the use of spherical coordinates to numerically solve hyperbolic partial differential equations can result in severe Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) stability condition time step limitations, which can make simulations prohibitively expensive. This paper addresses this issue for the numerical solution of coupled spacetime and general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics evolutions by introducing a double fast Fourier transform (FFT) filter and implementing it within the fully message passing interface (mpi)-parallelized sphericalnr framework in the einstein toolkit. In conclusion, we demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the filtering algorithm by applying it to a number of challenging code tests, and show that it passes these tests effectively, demonstrating convergence while also increasing the time step significantly compared to unfiltered simulations.

Double distributions and pseudodistributions

We describe the approach to lattice extraction of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that is based on the use of the double distribution (DD) formalism within the pseudodistribution framework. The advantage of using DDs is that GPDs obtained in this way have the mandatory polynomiality property, a nontrivial correlation between x and ξ dependences of GPDs. Another advantage of using DDs is that the D -term appears as an independent entity in the DD formalism rather than a part of GPDs H and E . We relate the ξ dependence of GPDs to the width of the α profiles of the corresponding DDs and discuss strategies for fitting lattice-extracted pseudodistributions by DDs. The approach described in the present paper may be used in ongoing and future lattice extractions of GPDs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

TeV-scale lepton number violation: Connecting leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay, and colliders

In the context of TeV-scale lepton number violating (LNV) interactions, we illustrate the interplay between leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay, and LNV searches at proton-proton colliders. Using a concrete model for illustration, we overcome the limitations of previous effective field theory analyses and are able to identify the parameter space where standard thermal leptogenesis is rendered unviable due to washout processes. Moreover, we show how 0 ν β β decay and p p collisions provide complementary probes. We find that the new particle spectrum can have a decisive impact on the relative sensitivity of these two probes. Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Sudakov double logs in single-inclusive hadron production in DIS at small x from the color glass condensate formalism

We investigate the high Q 2 (photon virtuality) limit of single-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small x , using the color glass condensate formalism at next-to-leading order. We focus on the Λ QCD 2 ≪ p h 2 ≪ Q 2 kinematic regime, where p h is the produced hadron transverse momentum, and extract the Sudakov double logarithms. We further argue that compatibility between the color glass condensate calculation and transverse momentum dependent distribution factorization at one-loop order can only be achieved if the small-x evolution is kinematically constrained.
