flat10MIP: an emissions-driven experiment to diagnose the climate response to positive, zero and negative CO2 emissions

Abstract. The proportionality between global mean temperature and cumulative emissions of CO2 predicted in Earth system models (ESMs) is the foundation of carbon budgeting frameworks. Deviations from this behavior could impact estimates of required net-zero timings and negative emissions requirements to meet the Paris Agreement climate targets. However, existing ESM diagnostic experiments do not allow for direct estimation of these deviations as a function of defined emissions pathways. Here, we perform a set of climate model diagnostic experiments for the assessment of transient climate response to cumulative CO2 emissions (TCRE), the Zero Emissions Commitment (ZEC), and climate reversibility metrics in an emissions-driven framework. The emissions-driven experiments provide consistent independent variables simplifying simulation, analysis and interpretation, with emissions rates more comparable to recent levels than existing protocols using model-specific compatible emissions from the CMIP DECK 1pctCO2 experiment, where emissions rates tend to increase during the experiment, such that at the time of CO2 doubling in year 70, emissions are much greater than present-day values. A base experiment, “esm-flat10”, has constant emissions of CO2 of 10 GtC per year (near-present-day values), and initial results show that the TCRE estimated in this experiment is about 0.1 K less than that obtained using 1pctCO2. A subset of ESMs exhibit land carbon sinks that saturate during this experiment. A branch experiment, esm-flat10-zec, illustrates that both positive and negative ZEC effects are less pronounced under esm-flat10 than under 1pctCO2 – the magnitude of ZEC50 in ESMs is, on average, reduced by 30 % compared with 1pctCO2 branch experiments. A final experiment, esm-flat10-cdr, assesses climate reversibility under negative emissions, where we find that peak warming may occur before or after net zero and that the asymmetry in temperature at a given level of cumulative emissions between the positive and negative emissions phases is well described by ZEC in most models. Further, we find that existing probabilistic simple climate model (SCM) ensembles tend to overestimate temperature reversibility compared with ESMs, highlighting the need for additional constraints. We propose a set of climate diagnostic indicators to quantify various aspects of climate reversibility. These experiments were suggested as potential candidates in CMIP7 and have since been adopted as “fast track” simulations.

Positive and Negative Ion CIMS Measurements, SGP, May-June 2024

The negative ion measurements were taken using two LTOF-CIMS with two different nitrate inlets. The data labeled Aerodyne_Inlet used an Aerodyne nitrate inlet. Data labeled PCC used a custom transverse inlet. The positive ion measurements were taken using one LTOF-CIMS with hydronium as an ionization reagent using a custom transverse inlet with an inlet voltage difference of 700 V. See https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpca.2c01672 for more information. Peaks were autofit using tofware. Positive ion data is published in the form of peak signal/reagent signal. Data files of peak signal/reagent signal for the two mass spectrometers for the negative ion measurements are separate. Concentrations of H2SO4 are combined into one file. When measurements were overlapping, measurements from the Aerodyne nitrate inlet were used.

Simple circuit positions film frames in projector

Individual frames on a photographic film strip in a projector are automatically positioned by a simple circuit. The circuit uses a photodiode that senses frame registry position and a relay that stops the film-advance motor to suspend the film at point of registry.

Residual magnetism holds solenoid armature in desired position

Holding solenoid uses residual magnetism to hold its armature in a desired position after excitation current is removed from the coil. Although no electrical power or mechanical devices are used, the solenoid has a low tolerance to armature displacement from the equilibrium position.

Determination of normal-shock position in a mixed compression supersonic inlet

Methods of determining inlet normal shock position from wall static pressure profiles were investigated. By using methods investigated in this report, it should be possible to control an inlet with less stability margin. Variation in inlet angle-of-attack caused drastic changes in pressure profile shape and wide variations in the angle of the shock plane with respect to the inlet axis. Thus, four sensors located around the circumference may be required to handle angle-of-attack and sideslip variations. One criterion would determine the shock position by comparing individual statics to a properly selected reference pressure.

The AGK3, a basis for a general (northern) reference catalogue of positions and proper motions

The original concept of the international AGK3 program is presented and a report on the methods applied and on the progress of the work is given. The results in the form of revised positions of the AGK2 reduced to the FK4 system, and of AGK3, can be extrapolated easily to earlier epochs, as far back as those of AGK1, and the mean error for these epochs will permit one the deriving of reliable values for systematic corrections of the old catalogs. By using the AGK2/3 positions a general catalog of roughly to the ninth magnitude can be constructed by including large catalogs such as AGK1, AC, and Yale. Thus a new edition of the type of the SAO catalog for the northern hemisphere can be produced.

VHF ranging and position fixing experiment using ATS satellites: Executive summary of final report on phases 1 and 2, 25 November - 1 May 1971

The VHF transponders of the ATS-1 and ATS-3 geostationary satellites were used in ranging and position fixing experiments. An interrogation signal was transmitted from a ground terminal to ATS-3, which relayed it to the vehicle transponders. The vehicle that was addressed repeated the signal and its response was relayed back through both satellites to the ground terminal, where propagation times were measured; lines-of-position and fixes were computed. The 0.43 second tone-code ranging signal contained a single audio tone frequency. Ambiguity was resolved and user craft identified by a simple digital code. Seven vehicles were used in the test: three aircraft, two ships, an oceanographic buoy, and a truck. Ionospheric and multipath effects were studied. It is concluded that a VHF system could have an accuracy of + or - one nautical mile for ships and aircraft if calibration transponders are used to monitor the ionosphere.

Experimental findings from zero-tank net positive suction head operation of the J-2 hydrogen pump

The results of a series of liquid hydrogen turbopump tests to demonstrate the feasibility of zero-tank net positive suction head are presented. A J-2 engine hydrogen pump and S-IVB stage fuel feed system were used for this investigation. The pump was operated at flows and speeds equivalent to normal J-2 engine operating conditions and at hydrogen bulk temperatures between 39 and 45 R. These tests show zero-tank not positive suction head to be a realistic operating mode that should be considered for future applications.

Experimental investigation of the visual field dependency in the erect and supine positions

The increasing utilization of simulators in many fields, in addition to aeronautics and space, requires the efficient use of these devices. It seemed that personnel highly influenced by the visual scene would make desirable subjects, particularly for those simulators without sufficient motion cues. In order to evaluate this concept, some measure of the degree of influence of the visual field on the subject in necessary. As part of this undertaking, 37 male and female subjects, including eight test pilots, were tested for their visual field dependency or independency. A version of Witkin's rod and frame apparatus was used for the tests. The results showed that nearly all the test subjects exhibited some degree of field dependency, the degree varying from very high field dependency to nearly zero field dependency in a normal distribution. The results for the test pilots were scattered throughout a range similar to the results for the bulk of male subjects. The few female subjects exhibited a higher field dependency than the male subjects. The male subjects exhibited a greater field dependency in the supine position than in the erect position, whereas the field dependency of the female subjects changed only slightly.

Inflow as a source of extraretinal eye position information.

Experiments were performed which show that subjects can reliably report when, and in which direction, loads were applied to their eyes in total darkness, which indicates that they were aware of inflow eye position information. Awareness of the inflow signal was not disrupted when the eyelids and conjunctiva were anesthetized and the eyelids were retracted from all possible contact with the scleral contact lens. Furthermore, the subjects maintained eye position when loads were applied to the eye in total darkness, showing that this inflow information can be used for extraretinal oculomotor control.

Applications of partial orderings to the study of positive definiteness, monotonicity, and convergence of iterative methods for linear systems.

Most of the known results concerning convergence of iterative methods for solving linear systems involve either positive definiteness or monotonicity. In this paper a new concept, called K-semipositivity, is introduced, which provides a link between convergence theory, monotonicity, and positive definiteness. By using this concept, together with partial orderings in Euclidean n-space, several new convergence theorems are proved. Application to Jacobi's methods and the theory of regular splittings shows the usefulness of these new results.

Lunar mapping - A position evaluation.

Various types of available lunar charts were evaluated using the new data provided by Apollo missions. The position information provided by current lunar cartographic products is examined, and data are included which can be used to determine a realistic reliability factor for each chart series discussed. The use of Apollo landmark tracking points yields quantitative results concerning the position errors that can be expected from the specific products included in this evaluation.
