Solving challenges in QCD 3D partonic distributions

The superior luminosity and high polarization of CEBAF, combined with the high resolution and excellent particle identification capabilities of its detectors, as well as the ability for multidimensional and multiparticle detection using polarized targets, make Jefferson Lab uniquely positioned to disentangle the genuine intrinsic transverse structure of hadrons encoded in 3D partonic distributions—particularly in the kinematic regime dominated by valence quarks. The inclusion of Jefferson Lab data on semi-inclusive and hard exclusive hadron production has the potential to dramatically advance our understanding of non-perturbative QCD dynamics. Although a wealth of data from various Jefferson Lab experiments is already available, its incorporation into phenomenological studies has been slow, and a significant portion of data from other leptoproduction experiments is still missing from global fits. In this contribution, we discuss the existing challenges and outline a path forward for improving the analysis of low center-of-mass electroproduction experiments in general, and Jefferson Lab data in particular.

The Ω c -puzzle solved by means of quark model predictions

The observation of five $$\varOmega _c $$ Ω c = ssc states by LHCb [Aaij et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 118 , 182001(2017)] and the confirmation of four of them by Belle [Yelton et al. Phys. Rev. D 97 , 051102(2018)], may represent an important milestone in our understanding of the quark organization inside hadrons. By providing results for the spectrum of $$\varOmega _{ c}$$ Ω c baryons and predictions for their $$\varXi _{ c}^{+}K^{-}$$ Ξ c + K - and $$\varXi _{ c}'^{+}K^{-}$$ Ξ c ' + K - decay amplitudes within an harmonic oscillator based model, we suggest a possible solution to the $$\varOmega _{c}$$ Ω c quantum number puzzle and we extend our mass and decay width predictions to the $$\varOmega _b$$ Ω b states. Finally, we discuss why the set of $$\varOmega _{ c(b)}$$ Ω c ( b ) baryons is the most suitable environment to test the validity of three-quark and quark–diquark effective degrees of freedom.

spopt: a python package for solving spatial optimization problems in PySAL

Spatial optimization is a major spatial analytical tool in management and planning, the significance of which cannot be overstated. Spatial optimization models play an important role in designing and managing effective and efficient service systems such as transportation, education, public health, environmental protection, and commercial investment among others. To this end, spopt (spatial optimization) is under active development for the inclusion of newly proposed models and methods for regionalization, facility location, and transportation-oriented solutions (Feng et al., 2021). Spopt is a submodule in the open-source spatial analysis library PySAL (Python Spatial Analysis Library) founded by Dr. Sergio J. Rey and Dr. Luc Anselin in 2005 (Rey et al., 2015, 2021; Rey & Anselin, 2007). The goal of developing spopt is to provide management and decision-making support to all relevant practitioners and to further promote the appropriate and meaningful application of spatial optimization models in practice.

Solving 3d gravity with Virasoro TQFT

We propose a precise reformulation of 3d quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of a topological quantum field theory based on the quantization of the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces that we refer to as “Virasoro TQFT”. This TQFT is similar, but importantly not equivalent, to SL(2, \mathbb{R} ℝ ) Chern-Simons theory. This sharpens the folklore that 3d gravity is related to SL(2, \mathbb{R} ℝ ) Chern-Simons theory into a precise correspondence, and resolves some well-known issues with this lore at the quantum level. Our proposal is computationally very useful and provides a powerful tool for the further study of 3d gravity. In particular, we explain how together with standard TQFT surgery techniques this leads to a fully algorithmic procedure for the computation of the gravity partition function on a fixed topology exactly in the central charge. Mathematically, the relation leads to many nontrivial conjectures for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Virasoro conformal blocks and crossing kernels.

An Analog Preconditioner for Solving Linear Systems [Slides]

This presentation concludes in situ computation enables new approaches to linear algebra problems which can be both more effective and more efficient as compared to conventional digital systems. Preconditioning is well-suited to analog computation due to the tolerance for approximate solutions. When combined with prior work on in situ MVM for scientific computing, analog preconditioning can enable significant speedups for important linear algebra applications.

Solving Statistical Flowgraph Models: A Brief Review

Statistical flowgraph models (SFGMs) have proven useful for analysis and modeling of multistate processes in various fields. In this paper we briefly review flowgraph models, describe how to set up a model, and provide a fully worked example from biostatistics. References are provided for more details.
