Measurement of apparent thermal conductivity of multilayer insulations at low compressive loads.

A description is presented of the test calorimeter, the experimental technique, and the results obtained in an evaluation of four multilayer insulations selected for application on future multilaunch space vehicles utilizing liquid hydrogen and oxygen for orbital operations. Particular attention is paid to techniques for minimizing error in obtaining thermal conductivity data. The effective conductivity for four high-performance insulations was determined at a minimum of four compressive loads in the range from 0.0001 to 0.1 psi. Results show that the thermal conductivity of multilayer insulations is insensitive to small changes in mechanical loading at 1 torr interstitial gas pressure, but becomes increasingly more sensitive to mechanical loading as the interstitial gas pressure is reduced.

Geologic and mineral and water resources investigations in western Colorado, using Skylab EREP data

The author has identified the following significant results. Discovery of three major north-trending, throughgoing faults in the Front Range, previously mapped only as isolated segments, demonstrates the utility of space photography and may lead to reinterpretation of the Front Range tectonic style. Faulting and alteration appear to be the most useful indicators of mineralization in central Colorado. These phenomena appear on Skylab photography as tonal lineaments and color anomalies. Twenty-three lineaments have been mapped in the San Juan Mountains, the longest of which is 156 km long. Twelve lineaments intersect or are tangent to calderas. Intrusive domes are aligned along lineaments, but calderas appear to occur at the intersections of major lineaments. Lineaments can be recognized on some EREP passes but not on other passes over the same area. The difference is attributed to solar elevation effects. Bedding attitudes can be photogeologically estimated down to surprisingly low dips, on the order of + or - 1-2 deg, and attitudes can be subdivided easily into quantitative groups. The primary application of Skylab photography to geologic mapping in montane areas is clearly limited to regional mapping at scales smaller than 1:24,000.

ALSEP: Quasar differential VLBI

A program of Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP)-Quasar Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is being reported. These observations primarily employ a 4 antenna technique, whereby simultaneous observations with two antennas at each end of an intercontinental baseline are used to derive the differential interferometric phase between a compact extragalactic radio source (usually a quasar) and a number of ALSEP transmitters on the lunar surface. A continous ALSEP-quasar differential phase history over a few hour period leads to extremely high angular accuracy in measuring the lunar position against the quasar reference frame. This application of the 4 antenna technique has been underway for more than a year and is now producing high quality data utilizing Deep Space Network (DSN) stations in Australia, Spain, and Goldstone, California, as well as the Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network (STDN) Apollo station at Goldstone.

ALSEP-quasar differential VLBI

A program of ALSEP-quasar very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) is being carried out. These observations employ primarily a 'four-antenna' technique whereby simultaneous observations with two antennas at each end of an intercontinental baseline are used to derive the differential interferometric phase between a compact extragalactic radio source (usually a quasar) and a number of ALSEP transmitters on the lunar surface. A continuous ALSEP-quasar differential phase history over a period of a few hours will lead to milliarcsecond angular accuracy in measuring the lunar position against the quasar reference frame if suitable calibration measurements are obtained. Development of this application of the four-antenna technique has been underway for more than a year and is producing high-quality data utilizing Deep Space Network stations. These high-accuracy observations are of value to tie the lunar ephemeris to a nearly inertial extragalactic reference frame, to test gravitational theories, and to measure the earth-moon tidal friction interaction.

Future prospects of infrared observations of active nuclei

Future developments in infrared observations are briefly discussed. The prospects for large advances in ground-based broad-band observations probably lie in increased availability of dedicated telescopes and observing time. Several specific areas of potential advancement are described. The plans for the utilization of space for infrared astronomy call for an unbiased all-sky survey in the wavelengths 8-120 microns followed by complementary missions using a cooled moderate sized telescope and a large uncooled telescope.

Overview of the large space systems technology program

A multicenter management approach which provides the opportunity to work across many disciplines and match the roles and expertise of various NASA facilities is described for the large space system technology (LSST) program which was established to define, develop, and verify structural concepts, analyses, and design procedures for a range of sizes and configurations to be deployed, erected, or fabricated in orbit during projected space missions utilizing shuttle in the 1985 to 2000 time period. Benefits from the program include reduced costs for transporting structures having low mass, high packageability, and multimission capabilities. Technologies identified by the LSST program will contribute to the solutions of problems in other sectors of the economy.

A study of the feasibility of ultraviolet spectrometry for cometary missions

Ultraviolet spectra fo the comet West obtained by sounding rocket experiments in 1976 are reproduced and interpreted in order to estimate the expected brightness of the emission features and determine the spatial extent of these features for the proposed Halley Flyby/Tempel 2 rendezvous and the possible Halley or Encke flybys close to perihelion. A coma model was constructed and evaluated for the physical condition of candidate targets such as heliocentric distance, gas production, and composition. In addition to brightness profiles, the neutral and ion densities of the principal species are also dervied. The brightness profiles can be used to determine the feasibility of utilizing the space telescope to provide supporting observations during the mission. Basic parameters identified are spectral range, wavelength resolution, spatial resolution, sensitivity and dynamic range, rejection of scattered light, and integration or accumulation time.

Study of advanced electric propulsion system concept using a flywheel for electric vehicles

Advanced electric propulsion system concepts with flywheels for electric vehicles are evaluated and it is predicted that advanced systems can provide considerable performance improvement over existing electric propulsion systems with little or no cost penalty. Using components specifically designed for an integrated electric propulsion system avoids the compromises that frequently lead to a loss of efficiency and to inefficient utilization of space and weight. A propulsion system using a flywheel power energy storage device can provide excellent acceleration under adverse conditions of battery degradation due either to very low temperatures or high degrees of discharge. Both electrical and mechanical means of transfer of energy to and from the flywheel appear attractive; however, development work is required to establish the safe limits of speed and energy storage for advanced flywheel designs and to achieve the optimum efficiency of energy transfer. Brushless traction motor designs using either electronic commutation schemes or dc-to-ac inverters appear to provide a practical approach to a mass producible motor, with excellent efficiency and light weight. No comparisons were made with advanced system concepts which do not incorporate a flywheel.

Utility and technology for a space central power station

The technological and economical impacts of a large central power station in Earth orbit on the performance and cost of future spacecraft and their orbital-transfer systems are examined. It is shown that beaming power to remote users cannot be cost-effective if the central power station uses the same power generation system that would be readily available for provision of on-board power. Laser transmitters/receivers to make central power stations feasible are considered. The cost-effectiveness of meeting Earth-orbiting spacecraft electrical demands from a central power station was analyzed, indicating that this application cannot justify the investment required for the central station. Key technology needs which must be met to enable a viable central power station in the future are identified.

Space environmental effects: Construction and utilization of a system to measure low thermal strain in one meter graphite epoxy tubes

A system for measuring the expansion of low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) materials was constructed around a H.P. 5526-A laser measuring system. The vacuum CTE measurements in the -150 F to +120 F range were made over a 6 month period on a graphite epoxy tube yielding CTE values of 2.5 to one fifty-millionth/F above ambient and 2 + or - one ten-millionth F below ambient temperature. To assure that the below ambient, approximately 10 microns high open loop nature of the delta L/L vs. T curves was not apparatus related, similar size quartz tubes (A and B) were checked and found to have only a 2 micron (negligable for quartz) open loop component. These two quartz tubes, A and B, had ambient CTE values 20% and 45% respectively higher than the average handbook value. The overnight microcreep diminished an order of magnitude during the first several cycles after the system had been reopened.
