Interplay of structure and magnetism in LuFe 4 ⁢Ge 2 tuned by hydrostatic pressure

Lu⁢Fe 4 ⁢Ge 2 crystallizes in the Zr⁢Fe 4 ⁢Si 2 -type structure, hosting chains of Fe tetrahedra giving rise to geometric frustration and low dimensionality. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at around 36 K accompanied by a simultaneous structural transition from a tetragonal phase to an orthorhombic phase. The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetic and structural transitions is investigated using electrical transport, AC magnetic susceptibility, AC calorimetry, M⁢össbauer, muon-spin relaxation (μ⁢SR), and x-ray-diffraction measurements. External pressure suppresses the first-order transition to the antiferromagnetic phase (AFM1) around 1.8 GPa. The structural transition is largely unaffected by pressure and remains between 30 to 35 K for pressures up to 2 GPa. A second antiferromagnetic phase (AFM2) is observed at higher pressures. The transition from the paramagnetic to the AFM2 phase is of second-order nature and appears to be connected to the structural transition. The magnetic volume fraction obtained from μ⁢SR and M⁢össbauer measurements reveal that the entire sample undergoes magnetic ordering in both magnetic phases. In addition, similar low-temperature muon-precession frequencies in AFM1 and AFM2 phases point at similar ordered moments and magnetic structures in both phases. Our results further indicate enhanced magnetic fluctuations in the pressure-induced AFM2 phase. The experimental observations together with density functional theory calculations suggest that the magnetic- and structural-order parameters in Lu⁢Fe 4 ⁢Ge 2 are linked by magnetic frustration, causing the simultaneous magnetostructural transition.

Physical properties of Sm x B 6 single crystals

We study the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, and heat capacity of single crystals of Sm x B 6 for x=1,0.94,0.8, and 0.75. Remarkably, the overall properties of the crystals do not qualitatively depend on the density of vacancies. The topological surface states are seen at low temperatures in the electrical transport properties as the bulk conductivity freezes out. Even a large number of Sm vacancies does not close the hybridization gap. The linear term in the specific heat γ, of unclear origin, remains large but decreases gradually with x. The shoulder in the density of states, brought by the hybridized 4f states and observed in the susceptibility and the specific heat, does not move but decreases its height with decreasing x. The specific heat also displays a weak Schottky anomaly at about 1.5 K for all x, except for the x = 0.75 sample. This Schottky anomaly is only slightly field dependent and of unknown origin.

Bootstrap-determined p values in lattice QCD

We present a general method to determine the probability that stochastic Monte Carlo data, in particular those generated in a lattice QCD calculation, would have been obtained were that data drawn from the distribution predicted by a given theoretical hypothesis. Such a probability, or p -value, is often used as an important heuristic measure of the validity of that hypothesis. The proposed method offers the benefit that it remains usable in cases where the standard Hotelling T 2 methods based on the conventional χ 2 statistic do not apply, such as for uncorrelated fits. Specifically, we analyze q 2 , defined as the correlated χ 2 statistic obtained using an arbitrary covariance matrix estimator, and show how to use the bootstrap as a data-driven method to determine the expected distribution of q 2 for a given hypothesis with minimal assumptions. This distribution can then be used to determine the p -value for a fit to the data. We also describe a bootstrap approach for quantifying the impact upon this p -value of estimating population parameters from a single ensemble of N samples. The overall method is accurate up to a 1 / N bias which we do not attempt to quantify. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Update on NREL Outdoor Exposure Campaign of Solar Mirrors

Beginning in 2018, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory restarted exposure campaigns on new and archived samples as part of a multiyear project, some with outdoor exposure for more than a decade. By resuming exposure and collecting and analyzing data on thousands of samples going back decades, several goals can be advanced that can be difficult to determine within the timeline of most projects: 1) correlating an accelerated exposure campaign to outdoor aging, specifically with xenon arc lamp exposure chambers; 2) drawing conclusions between specific corrosion mechanisms and weather patterns; and 3) finding novel relationships between mirror composition and performance. In addition to building and mining a database, we will experiment with new characterization techniques, primarily focused on macroscopic and microscopic imaging. In introducing these techniques more broadly, it may be possible to reveal a more direct line between optical performance and exposure campaigns by better understanding the degradation mechanisms occurring.

Computer Simulation of Critical Behavior of Two-Dimensional Weakly Diluted Antiferromagnetic Potts Model on a Triangular Lattice

The critical behavior of a two-dimensional weakly diluted antiferromagnetic Potts model with spin states q = 3 on a triangular lattice is computationally simulated. The systems with periodic boundary conditions were calculated, when spin concentrations p were 1.0 and 0.9. Systems with linear dimensions L × L = N and L = 9–144 were considered. Static critical exponents of heat capacity α, the susceptibility γ, the order parameter β, and critical exponent ν for a correlation radius are calculated based on a theory of finite-dimensional scaling.

Electrolytic Etching of Germanium Substrates with Hydrogen Peroxide

Anodic electrolytic etching of germanium has been performed in hydrogen peroxide etchants with controlled external conditions. In-situ current and ex-situ etch-depths were measured and tracked with respect to etchant composition and stir rates. Gas bubbles formed during the etching process were found to cause non-uniformity in etch-current and surface quality. The effects were minimized in specific composition spaces. Quantitative analysis revealed a linear correlation of the number of electrons transferred during germanium oxidation with the number of surface atoms removed. Experimental results of 2.77 electrons/atom deviate significantly from 4 electrons/atom previously reported for silicon. The conclusion is that etching mechanisms for germanium are sufficiently different from those for silicon which invalidates the direct transfer of processing techniques between the two materials.

Fission Gas Measurements in Spent Fuel: Literature Review

The fission-derived noble gases, xenon(Xe) and krypton(Kr), have long been proposed as a tool for supporting nuclear safeguards and declarations verification. A vast body of literature outlines how these non-reactive fission gases released during reactor operation and shutdowns correlate to burnup level, power history, other reactor specifications and reprocessing activities. However, irradiation conditions can vary appreciably both radially and axially within a fuel pin.

Effects of Irradiation on Thermal Properties of Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is used as a thermal insulator, fire protective material, and impact absorber in the 9977 shipping package. The 9977 shipping package is used to transport special nuclear materials (SNM), and store SNM in the K-area complex at the Savannah River Site. The primary fire-retardant mechanism in the foam is that it produces intumescent char when exposed to high temperatures. Intumescence occurs in the direction of heat application and can allow the foam to “repair” cracks in the event of a mechanical impact, in addition to serving as a secondary thermal barrier with decreased heat conductivity. Because the foam is being used for long-term storage applications, it is vital that it retain its physical, thermal, and mechanical properties over the course of time and with the events of exposure of heat and irradiation. The goal of this project was to determine the effects of gamma irradiation on the thermal properties of polyurethane foam, both in terms of cumulative irradiation and rate of irradiation. At the dose rates and cumulative doses of irradiation measured, there was no correlation between higher cumulative irradiation and thermal stability, specific heat capacity, or chemical structure. Based on the results of the experiments, the fire protective properties in the 9977 shipping containers should be retained with the expected amount of radiation exposure.

Parmeterization of spectra

Following reception and analog to digital conversion (A/D) conversion, atmospheric radar backscatter echoes need to be processed so as to obtain desired information about atmospheric processes and to eliminate or minimize contaminating contributions from other sources. Various signal processing techniques have been implemented at mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere (MST) radar facilities to estimate parameters of interest from received spectra. Such estimation techniques need to be both accurate and sufficiently efficient to be within the capabilities of the particular data-processing system. The various techniques used to parameterize the spectra of received signals are reviewed herein. Noise estimation, electromagnetic interference, data smoothing, correlation, and the Doppler effect are among the specific points addressed.

Apollo 14 mare basalts - Petrology and geochemistry of clasts from consortium breccia 14321

It is pointed out that polymict lunar breccia 14321 has long been renowned for the relative abundance of mare basalt clasts which it contains. However, few detailed studies of these clasts exist. The most comprehensive studies to date are those of the first 14321 consortium. Although the studies produced important results, a number of questions remain still unanswered. Thus, it is not certain if the clasts studied are representative of the entire clast population. In addition, there is a lack of correlation of petrography and mineral chemistry information with specific, analyzed clasts, and the major elements Mg and Ca were not analyzed. A second 14321 consortium effort has been organized with the objective to address the remaining questions. The present investigation is concerned with the results of a combined petrographic, mineral /chemical, and geochemical study of 11 mare basalt clasts chipped from five separate subsamples of breccia 14321. It is found that the mare basalt suite at the Apollo 14 site comprises a diverse assemblage of petrographic and compositional types which confirm the importance of ancient mare volcanism.

Analytical determination of propeller performance degradation due to ice accretion

A computer code capable of computing the propeller performance for clean, glaze, or rime ice propeller configurations to determine the performance degradation resulting from a given icing encounter has been developed. The inviscid, incompressible flowfield at each specified propeller radial location is first computed using the Theodorsen method. A droplet trajectory computation then calculates the droplet impingement points and airfoil collection efficiency for each radial location. User-selectable empirical correlations are available for determining the aerodynamic penalties due to ice accretion. Propeller performance is finally computed using strip analysis for either the clean or iced propeller. In the iced mode, the thrust and torque coefficient equations are modified by the drag and lift coefficient increments due to ice to obtain the appropriate iced values. Comparison with available experimental propeller icing data shows generally good agreement. The code's capability of properly predicting the thrust coefficient, power coefficient, and propeller efficiency of an iced propeller is shown to be dependent on the choice of empirical correlation employed as well as on the proper specification of the radial icing extent and propeller blade angle.

The stability of individual patterns of autonomic responses to motion sickness stimulation

As part of a program to develop a treatment for motion sickness based on self-regulation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, this study examined the stability of an individual's pattern of ANS responses to motion sickness stimulation on repeated occasions. Motion sickness symptoms were induced in 58 people during two rotating chair test. Physiological responses measured were heart rate, finger pulse volume, respiration rate, and skin conductance. Using standard scores, stability of responses of specific magnitudes across both tests is as examined. Correlational analyses, analysis of variance, and a components of variance analysis all revealed marked, but quite stable, individual differences in ANS responses to both mild and severe motion sickness. These findings confirm the prior observation that people are sufficiently unique in their ANS responses to motion sickness provocation to make it nesessary to individually tailor self-regulation training. Further, these data support the contention that individual ANS patterns are sufficiently consistent from test to test so as to serve as an objective indicator of individual motion sickness malaise levels.

Pathfinder autonomous rendezvous and docking project

Capabilities are being developed and demonstrated to support manned and unmanned vehicle operations in lunar and planetary orbits. In this initial phase, primary emphasis is placed on definition of the system requirements for candidate Pathfinder mission applications and correlation of these system-level requirements with specific requirements. The FY-89 activities detailed are best characterized as foundation building. The majority of the efforts were dedicated to assessing the current state of the art, identifying desired elaborations and expansions to this level of development and charting a course that will realize the desired objectives in the future. Efforts are detailed across all work packages in developing those requirements and tools needed to test, refine, and validate basic autonomous rendezvous and docking elements.

The lunar farside - The nature of highlands east of Mare Smythii

A study of lunar orbital data to determine the origin and nature of geochemical variation in a portion of the farside highlands east of the Smythii basin is presented. Averages and ranges of concentrations for the elements Al, Mg, Fe, Ti, and Th are calculated and correlated for photogeologically defined units associated with some specific features and with the region as a whole. The region east of Smythii contains regolith that is far removed from, and therefore largely uncontaminated by, nearside basin material. By conducting a geochemical characterization of this area, the degree of heterogeneity in 'uncontaminated' highlands can be determined, and by implication the extent to which volcano-tectonic activity unrelated to the nearside basins has occurred on the moon.

Experimental Investigation of Gas-Side Performance of a Compact Finned-Tube Heat Exchanger

Heat-transfer and pressure-drop data were obtained experimentally for the gas side of a liquid-metal to air, compact finned-tube heat exchanger. The heat exchanger was fabricated from 0.185-inch Inconel tubing in an inline array. The fins were made of 310 stainless-steel- clad copper with a total thickness of 0.010 inch, and the fin pitch was 15.3 fins per inch. The liquid used as the heating medium was sodium. The heat-exchanger inlet gas temperature was varied from 5100 to 1260 R by burning JP fuel for airflow rates of 0.4 to 10.5 pounds per second corresponding to an approximate Reynolds number range of 300 to 9000. The sodium inlet temperature was held at 1400 R with the exception of a few runs taken at 1700 and 1960 R. The maximum ratio of surface temperature to air bulk temperature was 1.45. Friction-factor data with heat transfer were best represented by a single line when the density and viscosity of Reynolds number were evaluated at the average film temperature. At the lower Reynolds numbers reported, the friction data with heat transfer plotted slightly above the friction data without heat transfer. The density of the friction factor was calculated at the average bulk temperature. Heat-transfer results of this investigation were correlated by evaluating the physical properties of air (specific heat, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) at the film temperature.
