PACT Module Preconditioning Protocol (V.0.1)

The purpose of this protocol is to bring metal halide perovskite (MHP) modules to a repeatable and relevant state prior to making a performance measurement. Performance measurements are made before and after a stressor has been applied to the module to quantify the degree of loss resulting from the stressor. This procedure is intended to be carried out both before and after the accelerated test.

Incoherent Dynamics of Intense Proton Beams under Electron Cooling

The minimum emittance of ion beams achieved using electron cooling is limited by the heating processes of Intra Beam Scattering and diffusion driven by resonance crossing of particles due to space-charge. We describe a new experiment to explore the intense space-charge regime with a transverse tune shift approaching -0.5 using 2.5~MeV protons at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab. We also report on the results from PyORBIT simulations incorporating transverse space-charge and electron cooling with emphasis on the incoherent dynamics of the particles.

Thermionic Sources for Electron Cooling at IOTA

We are designing and fabricating two new thermionic sources of magnetized electrons for use in the electron lens project in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab. These electron sources will be used for cooling 2.5 MeV protons. One source will be used to compensate for emittance growth due to Intra Beam Scattering in experiments with weak space-charge, while the other source will be used to research the interplay between electron cooling and intense space charge. In this paper we present the progress made so far and the upcoming steps for the thermionic electron sources.

22 GeV CEBAF with Novel Fixed Field Alternating Gradient Design

Extending the energy reach of CEBAF up to 22 GeV within the existing tunnel is being explored. Proposed energy upgrade can be achieved by increasing the number of recirculations, while using the existing CEBAF SRF cavity system. Presented scheme is based on an exciting new approach to acceleratie electrons efficiently with multiple passes in a single FFA beam line. Encouraged by recent success of the CBETA Test Accelerator, a proposal was formulated raise CEBAF energy by replacing the highest-energy arcs with Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFA) arcs. The new pair of arcs configured with FFA lattice would support simultaneous transport of additional 6 passes with energies spanning a factor of two, using the non-scaling FFA principle implemented with Halbach-derived permanent magnets - a novel magnet technology that significantly saves energy and lowers operating costs. One of the challenges of the multi-pass (11) linac optics is to provide uniform focusing in a vast range of energies, using fixed field lattice. Here, we propose a triplet lattice scaled up with increasing momentum along the linac. This would provide a stable periodic solution covering energy ratio of 1:33. The current CEBAF configured with a 123 MeV injector, makes optical matching in the first linac virtually impossible due to extremely high energy span ratio (1:175). Therefore, we envision replacement of the current injector with a 650 MeV 3-pass recirculating injector based on the existing LERF facility. Finally, the 22 GeV CEBAF would promise to deliver in 10-passes a beam with normalized emittance of 80 mm·mrad and with a relative energy spread of 1.5 × 10-3. Further recirculation beyond 22 GeV is limited by large, 974 MeV per electron, energy loss due to synchrotron radiation.

Photovoltaic Cable Connectors: A Comparative Assessment of the Present State of the Industry [Slides]

The consequences of failure for balance of systems (BoS) components (such as PV cable connectors) include offline module string(s); low system voltage; arc, ground, insulation, and over-temperature faults; triggered fuse(s); system shutdown; and fire. The degradation modes for connectors are studied here through an industry survey and its subsequent examination, which are compared to field-degraded specimens. 117 specimens were obtained from a variety of locations and climates or accelerated tests. A failure analysis for connectors from PV installations was developed (and applied to 54 specimens) including nondestructive examinations (photography, a custom resistance-current scan, and X-ray computed tomography) and destructive examinations (featuring milling of the external plastic, extraction of the internal convolute spring, and potting and polishing in cross-section). Surface and through-thickness composition of the metal pins and springs was quantified using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to verify the base polymer materials and compare the chemical structure of the connector body, bushing, end nut, and o-ring. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to further verify the degradation of the same polymeric components. Proposal for a Proton-Bunch Compression Experiment at IOTA in the Strong Space-Charge Regime

The longitudinal compression of intense proton bunches with strong space-charge force is an essential component of a proton-based muon source for a muon collider. This paper discusses a proton-bunch compression experiment at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) storage ring at Fermilab to explore optimal radio frequency (RF) cavity and lattice configurations. IOTA is a compact fixed-energy storage ring that can circulate a 2.5-MeV proton beam with varying beam parameters and lattice configurations. The study will aim to demonstrate a bunch-compression factor of at least 2 in the IOTA ring while examining the impact of intense space-charge effects on the compression process.

Experimental Verification of Integrability in a Danilov-Nagaitsev Lattice using Machine Learning

In non-linear optics, achieving integrability can enhance the dynamic aperture in storage rings. We analyze turn-by-turn phase-space data from our Danilov-Nagaitsev lattice implementation at Fermilab's Integrable Optics Test Accelerator using machine learning. \textit{AI Poincar\'e} estimates conserved quantities from experimental data without prior knowledge of the invariant structure, showing qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. Additionally, one of the two learned invariants exhibits comparable or better conservation compared to known theoretical expressions.

Sextupole Misalignment and Defect Identification and Remediation in IOTA

The nonlinear integrable optics studies at the integrable optics test accelerator (IOTA) demand fine control of the chromaticity using sextupole magnets. During the last experimental run undesirable misalignments and multipole composition in some sextupole magnets impacted operations. This report outlines the beam-based methods used to identify the nature of the misalignments and defects, and the subsequent magnetic measurements and remediation of the magnets for future runs.

Proton Beam Dynamics in Bare IOTA with Intense Space-Charge

We are commissioning a 2.5~MeV proton beam for the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator at Fermilab, allowing experiments in the strong space-charge regime with incoherent betatron tune shifts nearing 0.5. Accurate modelling of space-charge dynamics is vital for understanding planned experiments. We compare anticipated emittance growth and beam loss in the bare IOTA configuration using transverse space-charge models in Xsuite, PyORBIT, and MAD-X simulation codes. Our findings reveal agreement within 30\% in core phase-space density predictions up to 100~synchrotron periods at moderate beam currents, while tail distributions and beam loss show significant differences.

Measured Dynamic Aperture and Detuning of Nonlinear Integrable Optics

One of the most promising advantages of nonlinear integrable optics is strong amplitude dependent tune shift without degrading the dynamic aperture. The integrable optics test accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab is constructed around nonlinear lattice elements of the elliptical type as described by Danilov and Nagaitsev. Detuning and dynamic aperture scans in IOTA were performed using a fast dipole kicker and a low emittance electron beam. The evolution of the dynamic aperture and detuning for different configurations of the integrable optics lattice are presented.

Field Aging of Photovoltaic Module Packaging Materials: DuraMAT Field Module Library

To understand and develop models for silicon photovoltaic module degradation, accelerated testing is often used, however, outdoor field testing is necessary for validation. Outdoor field testing publications are often limited by the lack of a pristine, control module to compare the fielded module to. In this work, commercially available modules were purchased from seven different manufacturers for outdoor fielding then destructive characterization to investigate packaging material degradation on

Impacts of PV Module Connector Failures on Cost and Performance of Utility Scale Photovoltaic Systems

The reliability, cost and performance of electrical connectors are a concern in all types of electrical systems, and demands on connectors used on photovoltaic (PV) systems include that connectors maintain electrical conductivity and physical strength, endure ultraviolet sunlight and high ambient temperature, and resist moisture and chemical intrusion over a very long (>25 year) performance period. Connector failures increase operation and maintenance (O&M) costs and reduce plant production, but connector failure can also cause safety and liability problems, which are of greater concern. This work results from a three-year collaboration between Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technology Office (SETO) under Agreements #39035 and #38531 "Connector Reliability Across the US Solar Sector." a multi-pronged investigation of PV connector health across the US (see https://energy.sandia.gov/pvconnectors/). This report presents derivation of a Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) that models failure modes and frequencies (how often failure occurs), estimates O&M costs and lost production associated with connector failures, and then calculates the effect that PV module connectors can have on Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). The model is informed with initial data from quantitative assessment of failure rates, root causes and mechanisms, in-situ diagnostics and data collection, lab-based forensics, and interviews with PV connector manufacturers and plant operators. SNL conducted site inspections at multiple utility-scale sites in different climates and subjected field samples of new, used, and degraded connectors to visual and electrical characterization. EPRI conducted metallurgical analysis of the pin and sleeve conductors to study failure-induced morphological and compositional changes. There is in general a shortage of statistically valid data, but data from PVROM database maintained by SNL was sufficient to ascertain failure rates and lost production as well as provide qualitative insight in its curated maintenance records. This report details the structure of the mathematical model but the sources of data to inform the model will continue to evolve. Analysis of a 100 MW PV plant is provided as an example of the use of the model, with results indicating that connectors are responsible for Annualized O&M Costs of $\$$71,933/year; Annualized Unit O&M Costs of $\$$0.72/kW/year; that a Reserve Account of $\$$187,220 should be available to fund repairs related to connectors; that connectors add $\$$1,494,004 to the Net Present Value of the O&M Costs (project life); and that O&M related to connectors adds about $\$$0.00088/kWh to the Levelized Cost of Energy. The impact of this model is to provide a tool to make the US solar sector more robust by quantifying and monetizing the reliability risks to utility-scale PV systems posed by poorly installed, mismatched and/or poorly designed and manufactured connectors. The TEA provides a model incorporating failure statistics, O&M cost data, and lost production into a single figure of merit, informing decisions and enabling practitioners to optimize cost and performance trade-offs. Stakeholders include connector manufacturers, system designers and equipment specifiers, standards bodies, installers and O&M providers, investors and insurance underwriters. This report supports continued growth of PV predicated on assurances that properly installed and maintained PV system connectors are safe and reliable. The project team is proposing future work including accelerated testing of connectors and expanding the approach taken here to other PV system components, such as TEA for rapid shut-down devices.

NASA Facility for the Study of Space Radiation Effects

Space particulate radiation from the Van Allen belts, solar flares, galactic cosmic, and manmade sources have energies and fluxes which are capable of producing damage in space mission payloads. NASA - Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia, has initiated the construction of a ground-based Space Radiation Effects Laboratory which simulates most of the space particulate energy spectrum and which can be used in a radiation research program for minimizing or eliminating deleterious radiation effects. A 600-megaelectronvolt synchrocyclotron of variable energy and electron accelerators from 1 to 10 megaelectronvolts will be included in the laboratory for accelerated testing. The plan of the proposed test areas reflects the latest advances in the state of the art as it pertains to the engineering and basic experimental requirements in flexibility, radiation background levels, shielding, and isolation. The laboratory operational plan permits three Virginia institutions of higher learning to cooperate with the Langley Research Center in carrying out radiation programs.
