Graph Analytics for CEBAF Operations

We report on the progress achieved during a 2-year Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project titled “Graph Analytics for CEBAF Operations”. The objective of this project is to leverage deep learning on graph representations of CEBAF’s injector beamline in order to create a tool for improving the efficiency of beam tuning tasks. Specifically, we use graphs to represent the injector beamline at any arbitrary date and time and invoke a graph neural network (GNN) to extract a low-dimensional, informative representation that can be visualized in two-dimensions. By analyzing years of operational data from the CEBAF archiver, good and bad regions of parameter space can be identified. The goal is to exercise this framework as a real-time tool to aid beam tuning, which represents the dominant source of machine downtime.

Comparing the MELCOR Aerosol Deposition Model with Exact Analytical Solutions

Exact analytical solutions are presented for the evolution of the aerosol particle mass density function in a control volume for particle deposition due to gravitational settling, thermophoresis, and diffusion. The solutions are for arbitrary initial mass density functions and are applied for an initial lognormal density function. Integration of these solutions provides the suspended mass in the control volume as a function of time. These solutions serve as an exact benchmark to assess the accuracy of numerical methods. For the numerical algorithm used in MELCOR, excellent agreement is obtained for gravitational settling, diffusive deposition, and thermophoretic deposition for the suspended aerosol mass. In all cases, the default number of discrete particle size bins of 10 is shown to converge, with hardly any advantage to using 20 size bins.

Black Box Equations of State: Creating Semi-analytic Solutions to the Noh Problem and Verifying Equation of State Interfaces

The objective of this report is threefold. First, it details a method for deriving a semi-analytic solution to the Noh Problem when using a “black-box” equation of state. Such capability allows us to perform verification on complicated, more realistic equations of state. Examples include Steinberg equations of state for materials and tabulated equations of state. The second objective is to apply the methodology to verify the singularity-eos equation of state library. We do so by solving the Rankine-Hugoinot jump conditions for the Noh Problem, ensuring singularity derives the correct solution and comparing the error to an exact implementation of the equation of state. The third objective is to perform verification of the xRAGE Eulerian hydrodynamics code when interfaced with singularity. We provide the theory, analysis, documentation for a python implementation of the proposed solver, and verification results.

Machine Tool Data Analytics for Digital Twin and Machine Predictive Maintenance

The primary objective of this project is to improve machining process performance using in-process machining data from the machine tool controller and external sensors. Advances in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) enable monitoring of machines using controller data. Examples of the data provided by a controller include execution status of the controller, part count, block of code being executed, door status, tool position, the spindle and axis load, etc. MTConnect and OPC-UA are the two common protocols for capturing machine information. In this collaboration, methods for retrieving the machine controller data from selected machine tool controls and making these data accessible in different subsystems (such as digital twins and machine maintenance portals, etc.) will be developed and tested. In addition, analytics to improve machining process performance (by increasing productivity and reducing downtime) will be developed.

Deliberate Motion Analytics Applied to CUAS Sensor Fusion

The Advanced Reactor Safeguards and Security (ARSS) program in the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) seeks to identify new technology solutions for safeguards and security challenges associated with domestic deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. Research in the ARSS program is investigating alternative physical protection system (PPS) approaches that leverage new detection technologies. This report shows test results from a new form of artificial intelligence (AI) that is called deliberate motion analytics (DMA) when used to spatially and temporally fuse active radar and passive radio frequency (RF) detection that significantly improves detection of uncrewed aircraft systems (UASs). DMA is designed to filter out false positive alarms yet provide highly reliable intrusion detection at nuclear power plants (NPPs) and advanced small modular reactor (ASMR) perimeters. This form of AI is considered to be an enabling technology for security of the future and supports the ARSS investigation of alternative PPSs.

Analytic Expressions for Extracting Far Scrape-Off Layer Transport Coefficients from the Plasma-Wall Interaction of Divertor Tokamaks

Magnetic-confinement DT pilot plants and DEMO-class devices will employ thin breeding blanket first walls with substantially lower steady-state power-handling margins than ITER-like thick walls, making reliable prediction of main-chamber particle and heat loads increasingly critical. This report addresses that need by developing analytic tools to interpret far scrape-off layer (far-SOL) plasma–wall interaction measurements in divertor tokamaks, with the goal of extracting effective cross-field transport coefficients from “window-frame” experiments and related diagnostics.

Chelation ion chromatography as an automated, and cost-effective analytical technique for REE determination: method development and applications

Rare earth elements (REEs), as critical minerals, have important uses in modern energy and technologies, yet are vulnerable to potential supply chain disruptions. To establish domestic REE supply chain, efficient REE detection methods for resource characterization and mineral processing will be needed to accelerate innovations for domestic REE recovery. This study developed a rapid, novel, and cost-effective for REE detection method using ion chromatography (IC) for aqueous samples. Various REE-targeted eluent gradients and post-column agent compositions were tested on the chelation ion chromatography (CIC) with UV-vis detector for optimal separation and quantification of REEs within approximately 20 min. The single-channel pump to deliver the post-column solution to UV-vis detector was replaced with a 4-channel gradient pump, to increase operation and maintenance efficiencies. After method optimization, resulting calibration curves for more than ten REEs achieved high coefficients of determination (R2>0.999) and low relatively standard deviations (below 3.24%), demonstrating sub-ppm level detection limits (0.0897 to 0.1149 mg/L). The reliability of the CIC method was validated through comparison with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), showing strong agreement in REE recovery from certified standards. The impact of metal ions and salts on REE recovery using CIC was also systematically investigated. CIC consistently exhibited reliable performance in the presence of salt solutions such as NaCl and Na₂SO₄ (up to 10,000 mg/L). Our study also found the presence of high concentrations of Al ions (at 10,000 mg/L) significantly influenced REE determination, and elevated concentrations of Ca ions affected the recovery of specific REEs, including La, Ce, and Pr. The CIC method was further tested on REE-containing eluents from solvent extraction tests out of fly ash leachates. REE detection from these real processing fluids were reported to achieve 90% to 100% recovery rate from our IC method, compared to ICP-MS results. This study underscores the potential of CIC as a reliable and efficient alternative for REE determination in complex matrices. It also highlights the importance of minimizing select interfering metal ions in solutions to ensure accurate results. The REE CIC method presents a promising, low-maintenance, salt-tolerant, and cost-effective alternative to traditional analytical methods for REE analysis.

Analytical Dynamic Aperture Calculation Compared to Tracking Results

In studying dynamic aperture in the storage rings, it is becoming increasing beneficial to understand the growth of the fractal boundary of the dynamic aperture without tracking for millions of turns in a hadron ring. This note describes the J. Gao theory applied to the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) and compares simulation results to theoretical predictions to show that the analytical method may prove useful in quick determinations of improved dynamic aperture based on sextupole and octupole configurations.

Analytical Study of the Tumbling Motions of Vehicles Entering Planetary Atmospheres

The tumbling motion of vehicles entering planetary atmospheres is analyzed. A differential equation governing the tumbling motion, its arrest, and the subsequent oscillatory motion is obtained and identified as the equation for the fifth Painleve transcendant. An approximate analytical solution for the transcendant is derived. Comparisons with results obtained from numerical integration of the exact equations of motion indicate that the solution for the angle-of-attack history is sufficiently accurate to be of practical use.
