RF multicoupler design techniques to minimize problems of corona, multipaction, and stability

A mathematical expression was derived describing multipacting and corona effects in a coaxial cavity. Both mechanical and electrical design techniques were investigated to minimize the susceptibility of coaxial cavity to corona and multipacting-type breakdown. To assist in the design of a multicoupler free from corona and multipactor breakdown, a flow chart obtained from the derived mathematical expression is included.

Effects of eccentricities and lateral pressure on the design of stiffened compression panels

An analysis for determining the effects of eccentricities and lateral pressure on the design of stiffened compression panels is presented. The four types of panel stiffeners considered are integral, zee, integral zee, and integral tee. Mass-strength curves, which give the mass of the panel necessary to carry a specified load, are given along with related design equations needed to calculate the cross-sectional dimensions of the minimum-mass-stiffened panel. The results of the study indicate that the proportions of the panels are geometrically similar to the proportions of panels designed for no eccentricity or lateral pressure, but no cross-sectional dimensions are greater, resulting in significantly increased mass. The analytical minimum-mass designs of zee-stiffened panels are compared with designs from experimentally derived charts. An assumed eccentricity of 0.001 times the length of the panel is used to correlate the analytical and experimental data. Good correlation between the experimentally derived and the analytical curves is obtained for the range of loading where materials yield governs the design. At lower loads the mass given by the analytical curve using this assumed eccentricity is greater than that given by the experimental results.

Synthesis of feedback systems with large plant ignorance for prescribed time domain tolerances

There is given a minimum-phase plant transfer function, with prescribed bounds on its parameter values. The plant is imbedded in a two-degree-of freedom feedback system, which is to be designed such that the system time response to a deterministic input lies within specified boundaries. Subject to the above, the design should be such as to minimize the effect of sensor noise at the input to the plant. This report presents a design procedure for this purpose, based on frequency response concepts. The time-domain tolerances are translated into equivalent frequency response tolerances. The latter lead to bounds on the loop transmission function in the form of continuous curves on the Nichols chart. The properties of the loop transmission function which satisfy these bounds with minimum effect of sensor noise, are derived.

CO2 laser cold cathode study

The procedure for evaluating reliable sputter-free cold cathodes for carbon dioxide lasers is discussed. The purpose of the development is to obtain cold cathodes with service life in excess of 10,000 hours. Discharge tubes are used to eliminate the materials which would be unsatisfactory for use as a cold cathode. A description of the facility for producing the discharge tubes is described. The gas monitoring technique for determining discharge tube performance is examined. Discharge characteristics of tubes with various metals for cathode material are presented in chart form.

Surface tensions of propellants

An apparatus is described for determining the surface tension of propellants by measuring the maximum bubble pressure using two capillaries of different bores. The innovation is the use of a pressure transducer coupled to a bridge supply and a strip chart recorder for registering the development of the pressure difference as the bubble is formed and released. This enables the measurements to be made under controlled atmospheres and to be remotely operated. Preliminary experiments were done on propellant-grade hydrazine and monomethylhydrazine, and on purified hydrazine, at temperatures between 275.4 and 353.2 K. Straight-line expressions and logarithmic expressions reproduce equally well the variation of surface tension with temperature. Contaminated hydrazine, pre-exposed to coupons of 6Al-4V titanium alloy for long periods, gives slightly higher values of surface tension.

Magnetic field effects on superconductivity in alkali metal intercalates of MoS2

The effects of a magnetic field on the superconducting transition in MoS2 intercalated with potassium and sodium were studied. It was found that the potassium intercalated MoS2 has better properties in a magnetic field. In zero magnetic field the transition to superconductivity begins near 6.4 K. Diagrams of the basic circuitry for superconducting transition studies, and charts showing critical magnetic field versus critical temperature for the intercalated MoS2 are included.

Comparison of advanced propulsion concepts for deep space exploration

Equations and charts are presented that permit rapid estimation of propulsion-system performance requirements for some typical deep-space missions. A number of advanced propulsion concepts for which performance estimates are available are compared with respect to their capability for flyby, rendezvous, and roundtrip planetary missions. Based on these estimates, the gas-core nuclear fission rocket and the pulsed fusion rocket yield the fastest trip times to the near planets. For round trips to Jupiter and beyond, the controlled fusion rocket shows progressively superior capabilities. Several propulsion concepts based on use of impinging laser beams are found to be noncompetitive with the other advanced concepts for deep space missions. Requirements for attainment of interstellar distances within a human lifetime are found to be some orders of magnitude beyond the capabilities of any propulsion concepts for which performance estimates are now possible.

Measurement of total electron content with a geostationary satellite during the solar eclipse of March 7, 1970.

This note deals with the measurement of the total electron content of the ionosphere at the Goddard Space Flight Center, looking towards the geostationary satellite ATS 3 during the solar eclipse of Mar. 7, 1970. Obscuration at this site was nearly total. Faraday rotation was measured with a stationary circularly polarized antenna and a dual-channel phase-lock receiver tuned to 137.350 MHz. By comparing the electrical phase of the two opposite circularly polarized components, a continuous chart recording was made of Faraday rotation vs local time. A depletion of about 25% in electron content was observed from first contact to the time of minimum electron content. The time variations of the electron content during the eclipse are briefly examined in the light of current theories of ionospheric processes.

Dynamic analysis of large structures by modal synthesis techniques.

Several criteria that may be used to evaluate the merits of some of the existing techniques for the dynamic analysis of large structures which involve division into substructures or components are examined. These techniques make use of component displacement modes to synthetize global systems of generalized coordinates and, for that reason, they have come to be known as modal synthesis or component mode methods. Two techniques have been found to be particularly useful - i.e., the modal synthesis method with fixed attachment modes, and the modal synthesis method with free attachment modes. These two methods are treated in detail, and general flow charts are presented for guidance in computer programming.

A computer method for schedule processing and quick-time updating.

A schedule analysis program is presented which can be used to process any schedule with continuous flow and with no loops. Although generally thought of as a management tool, it has applicability to such extremes as music composition and computer program efficiency analysis. Other possibilities for its use include the determination of electrical power usage during some operation such as spacecraft checkout, and the determination of impact envelopes for the purpose of scheduling payloads in launch processing. At the core of the described computer method is an algorithm which computes the position of each activity bar on the output waterfall chart. The algorithm is basically a maximal-path computation which gives to each node in the schedule network the maximal path from the initial node to the given node.

Random response of rectangular panels to the pressure field beneath a turbulent boundary layer in subsonic flows

The response of a rectangular panel under the excitation of a turbulent boundary layer with a zero longitudinal mean pressure gradient in a subsonic flow was studied in detail. The method of normal mode was used together with the technique of spectral analysis. Both simply supported and clamped edge conditions of a panel were considered, and the displacement power spectral density of the panel response was computed. The results for the clamped edge panel compare favorably with existing data. Charts of structural acceptance, which provide a framework for estimating the response of other rectangular panels, are presented, and the physical significances of structural acceptances discussed.
