Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plants with Carbon Capture and Exhaust Gas Recycle

This is a presentation given at the 3rd International Conference on Energy and Environment. The presentation highlights analysis work conducted by NETL to assess the cost and performance for natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plants that incorporate solvent-based post combustion carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and exhaust gas recycle (EGR). Increasing the inlet CO2 concentration by EGR is expected to improve the efficiency of the capture system and reduce its cost, however the analysis results show that the cost improvement is minimal as is the cost of capture reduction.

Cooled Gas Turbine and Combined Cycle Analysis for NH 3 -CH 4 Fuel Mixes (Up to 100% NH 3 )

In this study, a cooled gas turbine (GT) analysis was conducted for varying levels of ammonia (NH 3 ) blends with methane. The ultimate goal is to have a gas turbine design that can be used for all the fuel blends (including 100% NH 3 ) without any changes to the system. The technological developments in the cooling system, gas turbine design, and materials that will be required for NH 3 combustion were identified and analyzed in this study to develop an advanced gas turbine design for NH 3 fuels. The study includes a combined cycle performance analysis with the NH 3 fuel blends using the advanced gas turbine design developed in this study. A techno-economic analysis was conducted for analyzing the impact of the NH 3 fuels on the levelized cost of electricity and cost sensitivities to fuel price and capacity factor.

Photovoltaic Cable Jackets: A Comparison of Representative Products Using Combined-Accelerated Stress Testing [Slides]

Photovoltaic (PV) cables facilitate the distribution of electricity collected from modules to the energy grid. Durable cabling enables continuous operation of PV installations, whereas cables with a lifetime less than the modules must be replaced - reducing electricity generation and adding to the operating expense. This study primarily focusses on the aging of the key cable types using the combined-accelerated stress testing (C-AST) protocol. Representative cables for utility, building, and control/auxiliary applications were examined. Cable jacket materials examined include: polyolefin, polyethylene, polyamide, poly(vinyl chloride), chlorinated polyethylene, thermoplastic elastomer, and ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber. Specimen characterizations applied include: optical microscopy, mechanical profilometry, instrumented indentation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A variety of performance and durability characteristics were observed, depending on the base material, polymer formulation, and jacket color. The results from C-AST are analyzed and discussed relative to a recent industry survey on electronic balance of system components in addition to a recent study where similar cables were aged using steady state ultraviolet weathering (International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Specification 62788-7-2). Recommendations are made for the screening, industry qualification, and service life prediction of PV cable jackets.

Using Project Accounting to Report the Full Impact of Combined Heat and Power Projects

Well-applied combined heat and power (CHP) is the most efficient method of generating electricity and useful thermal energy, producing substantially less emissions per MWhe compared to other combustion-based power generation technologies. This report explains how to apply the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Project Accounting (Project Protocol) to quantify and report reductions in emissions resulting from onsite CHP projects that reduces electricity generated on the grid. Use of the Project Protocol captures the full emissions reduction impact realized from CHP systems, including impacts outside the boundaries of the host facility.

Combined TDLAS and chemiluminescence imaging in a flat flame burner operated with NH3/H2 blends

Ammonia is viewed as a viable hydrogen carrier due to favorable storage and transport characteristics. While it can be re-converted to hydrogen at point-of-use via thermal catalytic cracking, direct utilization in combustion systems can result in reduced costs and improved efficiency. A major barrier to this approach is the low flammability and potential for high nitrogen oxide emissions, driven by fuel-bound nitrogen and complex kinetic pathways. While a number of kinetic mechanisms currently exist for simulating ammonia combustion, a major need continues to be direct information about species profiles in easy-to-model systems capable of isolating chemical kinetics from multi-dimensional fluid dynamic effects. This paper reports on recent species measurements made in a flat flame burner using a combined tunable-diode-laser-absorption-spectroscopy (TDLAS) and chemiluminescence imaging approach. Three flame conditions were included representative of NH3/H2 blends, partially cracked NH3 (inc. N2), and 100% NH3 with enhanced air (30% oxygen). Two NIR distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes were used to determine H2O concentration and temperature (via ratio thermometry) at various radial and axial positions, after which an inverse Abel transform was used to infer centerline values. Companion images were collected using a Princeton Instrument PI-MAX intensified camera equipped with a 105mm UV lens and multiple filter sets targeting OH*, NH*, and NH2* emission. Results were compared to companion Cantera burner-stabilized flame simulations using various kinetic mechanisms. A recent mechanism including excited species chemistry was also included, to investigate whether excited and ground state profiles exhibit significant differences.

Combined Creep and Fatigue Modeling

Simultaneous consideration of creep and fatigue is of paramount importance to accurately predict component life in many industrial applications. For example, growing penetration of renewable energy onto the grid is forcing many power plants to transition from base-load power generation to more complex operation modes, characterized by a combination of base-load generation and frequent start-up and shut-down cycles. The frequent start-stop of power plants is causing a significant toll in the component life due to fatigue. As such, creep alone is not adequate anymore to predict the component life. Most existing life prediction models consider creep or fatigue independently while neglect their interactions. In this presentation, we talk about some recent efforts at NETL to develop a unified modeling framework where both creep and fatigue can be considered. The creep-fatigue interaction mechanism is studied. High-throughput simulations are performed under various hold stress and hold time, and analytical expressions are fitted for the crack growth rates under creep and/or fatigue conditions demonstrating some applications of this newly developed modeling capability.

Fluor Solvent Evaluation and Testing New Scope: Techno-economic Assessment of EEMPA Solvent for CO 2 Separations from Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant

In this project, a techno-economic analysis (TEA) and sensitivity studies were conducted to assess the PNNL’s leading water-lean CO 2 capture solvent, EEMPA, for capture CO 2 from a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant at different levels of capture rate. Process models for the NGCC power plant, integrated with EEMPA carbon capture processes, were developed in Aspen Plus V14 using the most up-to-date property package for EEMPA-H 2 O-CO 2 system. The TEA evaluated EEMPA carbon capture process at normal capture rates (90%, 95% and 97%) against Case B32B (Cansolv) described in NETL Rev4a baseline report, and at higher capture rates aimed at achieving zero or negative emissions from the power plant (400 ppmv, 200 ppmv, and 100 ppmv CO 2 in exhaust gas), compared to typical Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies. A manuscript was drafted for peer-reviewed publication. The results suggested that the carbon capture cost reaches a minimum of $\$$53.7/tonne CO 2 at 90% capture rate. Compared to Cansolv, one of the industrial benchmarks, EEMPA demonstrates 2-4% cost savings at capture rates up to 95%, but minimal savings at higher capture rate. The water lean-solvent system proves economically attractive for achieving moderate negative emissions (about 200 ppmv CO 2 in exhaust gas, and equivalent to 50% CO 2 removal from air) for NGCC flue gas, with marginal capture costs comparable to direct air capture (DAC) technologies. A sensitivity analysis results reveal that its economic advantage, unaffected by EEMPA price due to low solvent loss and degradation rate. However, the marginal carbon capture cost exceeds $\$$1,000/tonne CO 2 when transitioning from moderate to extreme negative emissions (100 ppmv CO 2 in exhaust gas), suggesting that water-lean solvents may not be economically competitive with other DAC technologies for removing more than 75% CO 2 from air. In addition, initial connection was established with Technology Center Mongstad (TCM) for a potential pilot testing proposal. However, detailed modeling and proposal preparation was not conducted due to the delay of non-disclosure agreement.

Accelerated Selectrion of Optimal Perovskite Alloys for Solar PV using a Combined Quantum and Machine Learning Hierachiral Approach

The project aims to: (i) accelerate the discovery of “Missing HP alloys” by combining quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence machine learning approaches, and (ii) analyze the stabilities of candidate alloys, including those that do not pass selection filters (and are thus expected to degrade over time) to decipher the nature of the instabilities to guide the development of durable solar cell materials. Successful candidates will be subjected to validation experiments at NREL's state-of-the-art facilities. The discoveries this effort will provide will be directly testable and implementable and will greatly impact U.S. progress in HP PV as they will provide clear direction and motivation for experimental studies including specific material synthetic targets, device optimization, and device stability protocols. A key advantage of this effort is the feedback and guidance provided by the Industry Collaborative Work Group that we established to coordinate academic and national lab research with industry needs. The proposed work will provide a basis for and direct the development of robust and reliable HP PV. It will also provide a timely, valuable and extensive roadmap to the experimental HP PV community to enable it to focus its efforts on improving and fine-tuning promising HP compositions that this effort predicts will likely be the best performers rather than wandering in the vast chemical space for decades spending enormous resources mostly evaluating unpromising candidate materials.

Comprehensive SNP Data for 1,323 GWAS Population in Populus trichocarpa and Combined Annotation Files for P. trichocarpa v3.0 and v3.1

The VCF dataset includes genetic variations found in 1,323 Populus trichocarpa genotypes, providing valuable information for scientists studying plant genetics. Researchers have generated this dataset using whole-genome DNA short-read sequencing on the Illumina Genome Analyzer, HiSeq 2000, and HiSeq 2500 platforms. This sequencing effort ensured a minimum expected sequencing depth of 15×. The dataset comprises more than 9.7 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and indel variants. The combined annotation files are derived from P. trichocarpa v3.0 and v3.1. We merged these files to create a comprehensive annotation file used for GWAS analysis. In total, 38,830 genes overlapped between the two versions. For overlapping genes, we defined the start as the smaller and the end as the larger among the two versions to increase the likelihood of locating candidate genetic loci. Additionally, we included 2,505 unique genes from v3.0 and 4,120 unique genes from v3.1, resulting in a total of 45,455 genes in the updated annotation file.

Combined ambient vibration and surface displacement measurements for improved progressive failure monitoring at a toppling rock slab in Utah, USA

Seismic resonance and surface displacement measurements can be implemented in tandem to improve landslide characterization and progressive failure monitoring. Crack aperture data are frequently used in rock slope stability monitoring and often exhibit recognizable trends prior to failure, such as accelerated crack opening. Alternatively, ambient resonance data offer multiple parameters including modal frequencies, damping, and polarization that can be monitored alongside crack aperture and may respond differently to environmental forcings and complex failure evolution. We analyzed data from continuous ambient vibration monitoring and concomitant crack aperture measurements at the Courthouse Mesa instability, a large toppling sandstone slab in Utah, USA. Three years of data revealed crack aperture increases of 2–4 mm/year with no clearly detectable irreversible changes in modal parameters, including frequency. Annually, frequency and displacement varied by 29% and 19% of the mean, respectively, with average and maximum daily frequency fluctuations of 6.5% and 16%, respectively. These reversible cyclic changes were primarily temperature-driven, but annually, frequency was in-phase with temperature whereas crack aperture lagged temperature changes by ~37 days. Polarization and damping also varied seasonally but were less strongly correlated with temperature. Conceptual 3D finite element modeling demonstrated consistent frequency decreases associated with crack propagation but variable changes in crack aperture measured at a single point; i.e., crack propagation did not always result in increased crack opening but always generated a resonance frequency decrease. Taken together, our data suggest a possible thermal wedging-ratcheting mechanism at the Courthouse Mesa instability, where annual thermoelastic crack closure is impeded by debris infill but the absence of downward crack propagation during the monitoring period is evidenced by no permanent resonance frequency changes. Our study demonstrates that combined seismic resonance and crack aperture data provide an improved description of rock slope instability behavior, supporting refined characterization and monitoring of changes accompanying progressive failure.

Combined Sugarcane Pretreatment for the Generation of Ethanol and Value-Added Products

In this work, we have tested individual and combination of applications of ozonolysis and liquid hot water (LHW) to pretreat sugarcane bagasse (SCB) for the removal of enzyme and/or microbial inhibitors and generation of potential value-added chemicals. A solid content with 80% cellulose and a liquid phase (liquor) rich in phenolic derived compounds (3 g . L −1 ) from lignin, sugars (>20 g . L −1 ), and other compounds, such as furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), were generated. Maximal (59%) glucan conversion occurred in the presence of double-pretreated bagasse, which had 32–50% more glucan available than the samples that were individually LHW or ozone-pretreated, resulting in maximal ethanol production (92% after 42 h) from double-pretreated SCB enzyme hydrolyzate. In summary, this work showed that ozone reacts effectively with lignin without the use of any other chemical reagent, and LHW pretreatment, followed by a washing step, was effective in solubilizing and cleaning up the fiber enzyme and microbial inhibitory compounds with ozone being effective against phenolics. Moreover, the generated cellulose-rich substrate is readily fermentable. The acidic liquor fraction removed by sequential washings and containing mainly sugars and phenolic compounds may be evaluated for use in green chemistry bioconversions processes.

Long-Term Stochasticity Combines With Short-Term Variability in Assembly Processes to Underlie Rice Paddy Sustainability

Revealing temporal patterns of community assembly processes is important for understanding how microorganisms underlie the sustainability of agroecosystem. The ancient terraced rice paddies at Longji provide an ideal platform to study temporal dynamics of agroecosystem sustainability due to their chronosequential records of soil physicochemistry and well-archived microbial information along 630-year rice cultivation. We used statistical null models to evaluate microbial assembly processes along the soil chronosequences of Longji rice paddies through time. Stochastic and deterministic assembly processes jointly governed microbial community composition within successional eras (less than 250 years), and within-era determinism was mainly driven by soil fertility and redox conditions alone or in combination. Conversely, across successional eras (i.e., over 300 years), stochasticity linearly increased with increasing duration between eras and was eventually predominant for the whole 630 years. We suggest that the impact of stochasticity vs. determinism on assembly is timescale-dependent, and we propose that the importance of stochastic assembly of microbial community at longer timescales is due to the gradual changes in soil properties under long-term rice cultivation, which in turn contribute to the sustainability of paddy ecosystem by maintaining a diverse community of microorganisms with multi-functional traits. In total, our results indicate that knowledge on the timescales at which assembly processes govern microbial community composition is key to understanding the ecological mechanisms generating agroecosystem sustainability.

Systematic analysis of Baobaoqu fermentation starter for Wuliangye Baijiu by the combination of metagenomics and metabolomics

Baobaoqu (BBQ) is a traditional fermenting power, which is widely applied in Nong-flavor Baijiu brewing. There are two different types of BBQ (premium BBQ and normal BBQ) used in industrial manufacture, but the reasons for the significant differences between two kinds of BBQ have not been clearly illuminated. In this study, the combination of metagenomics and metabolomics was performed to compare the differences in the composition of microbial communities and the components of flavors between premium BBQ and normal BBQ. The results showed that the glycosidase-producing microorganisms are the biomarkers of premium BBQ, contributing a better ability of carbon source utilization than normal BBQ. In addition, several important flavors (ethyl hexanoate, phenylethanol, ethyl acetate) were rich in normal BBQ, which have a significant positive correlation with the biomarkers ( Lactobacillus and Pichia kudriavzevii ) of normal BBQ. It suggests that the microbial community has an advantage in utilizing raw materials in premium BBQ, while the community was inclined to form flavors in normal BBQ. The differences between two types of BBQ at the microbial and flavor level have theoretical and practical guiding significance in the application of premium and normal BBQ and in the further improvements of taste and quality of Baijiu.

Combining Multicolor FISH with Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging for Chromosomal Identification and Chromosomal Sub Structure Investigation

Understanding the structure of chromatin in chromosomes during normal and diseased state of cells is still one of the key challenges in structural biology. Using DAPI staining alone together with Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), the environment of chromatin in chromosomes can be explored. Fluorescence lifetime can be used to probe the environment of a fluorophore such as energy transfer, pH and viscosity. Multicolor FISH (M-FISH) is a technique that allows individual chromosome identification, classification as well as assessment of the entire genome. Here we describe a combined approach using DAPI as a DNA environment sensor together with FLIM and M-FISH to understand the nanometer structure of all 46 chromosomes in the nucleus covering the entire human genome at the single cell level. Upon DAPI binding to DNA minor groove followed by fluorescence lifetime measurement and imaging by multiphoton excitation, structural differences in the chromosomes can be studied and observed. This manuscript provides a blow by blow account of the protocol required to perform M-FISH-FLIM of whole chromosomes.
