Uniaxial stress study of spin and charge stripes in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 by 139La NMR and 63Cu NQR

We study the response of spin and charge order in single crystals of La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 to uniaxial stress, through 139La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), respectively. In unstressed La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, the low-temperature tetragonal structure onsets below TLTT = 57 K, while the charge order and the spin order transition temperatures are TCO = 54 K and TSO = 37 K, respectively. We find that uniaxial stress along the [110] lattice direction strongly suppresses TCO and TSO, but has little effect on TLTT. In other words, under stress along [110] a large splitting (≈ 21 K) opens between TCO and TLTT, showing that these transitions are not tightly linked. On the other hand, stress along [100] causes a slight suppression of TLTT but has essentially no effect on TCO and TSO. Magnetic field H along [110] stabilizes the spin order: the suppression of TSO under stress along [110] is slower under H ∥ [110] than H ∥ [001]. We develop a Landau free energy model and interpret our findings as an interplay of symmetry breaking terms driven by the orientation of spins.

Flat Bands and Chiral Optical Response of Moiré Insulators

Here, we present a low-energy model describing the reconstruction of the electronic spectrum in twisted bilayers of honeycomb crystals with broken sublattice symmetry. The resulting moiré patterns are classified into two families with different symmetry. In both cases, flat bands appear at relatively large angles without any magic-angle condition. Transitions between them give rise to sharp resonances in the optical absorption spectrum at frequencies well below the gap of the monolayer. Owing to their chiral symmetry, twisted bilayers display circular dichroism, that is, different absorption of left and right circularly polarized light. This optical activity is a nonlocal property determined by the stacking. In hexagonal boron nitride, sensitivity to the stacking leads to strikingly different circular dichroism in the two types of moirés. Our calculations exemplify how subtle properties of the electronic wave functions, encoded in current correlations between the layers, control physical observables of moiré materials.

Charging-management And Infrastructure-planning (cmip) Model

CMIP model explores various charging infrastructure network designs to serve a free-floating car-sharing fleet and determine the charging downtime experienced by the fleet for each design. Development of the CMIP model had two major steps: (1) describing modeling assumptions and (2) developing an integer program (IP) that jointly optimizes decisions about locations to install DC fast chargers and EV-to-charger assignments. The CMIP model integrates an EV charging model, EV energy consumption model, and heterogeneous, real-world vehicle use data with an integer programming optimization model to identify optimal location of new charging stations and calculate vehicle downtime for charging. The CMIP model can be applied to understand: (a) the reduction of EV fleet downtime if an additional fast-charging station is added to the current infrastructure and (b) to what extent total vehicle downtime would be sensitive to additional charging infrastructure.

NucMesh: nuclear reactor geometry creation and mesh generation module in NEMoSys

NucMesh is a parameterized geometry and mesh generator for nuclear reactors developed within the Nuclear Energy Modeling System NEMoSys at Illinois Rocstar. NEMoSys is a platform developed for mesh generation, adaptive refinement, and solution verification. NucMesh is implemented to be generalized and extensible with a robust computer aided design engine and multiple mesh generation algorithms for unstructured triangular, quad-dominant, and structured quadrilateral meshing. In this paper, we present the geometric and meshing features of NucMesh. Geometrically objects are constructed bottom-to-top and overlaps are addressed automatically. A sophisticated object tracking algorithm prevents data from being lost for segmented objects. We discuss the primitive objects of circle and polygons that constitute the module and show how they are used with example inputs. Arrays of primitives and arrays of arrays are utilized to build large assemblies of objects. The concept of saved objects is discussed to demonstrate how repetitive objects can be reused easily and augmented in place. Three dimensional meshes can be obtained through mesh extrusion where all materials and side sets are extended to three dimensions. We show that side sets can be defined nearly anywhere within the geometry and can then be applied to the mesh. Finally, example reactor meshes are demonstrated for the Idaho National Laboratory Advanced Test Reactor and Los Alamos National Lab Empire reactor, both of which use control drums that NucMesh handles easily. Industrial Conveyor Motor Performance Evaluation

The purpose of this project is to estimate the energy savings potential from a switched-reluctance motor (SRM) compared to an induction motor equipped with variable frequency drive (VFD) in a straight belt conveyor application. To experimentally evaluate savings in a realistic scenario, a baseline motor and VFD were selected from one of ComEd’s manufacturing customers’ conveyor systems. It was desired to not only estimate savings in the selected conveyor system, but to evaluate potential savings from using the SRM in any straight belt conveyor. Therefore, NREL developed a conveyor system energy calculation tool to supplement the experimental results of this assessment.

Conceptual Design of Pulverized Coal Electricity Generating Units for Flexible Operation

This National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) study addresses the conceptual design of greenfield pulverized coal (PC) plants intended for flexible rather than high capacity factor baseload operation. The United States has plentiful, low-cost natural gas resources - studies of aggressive decarbonization scenarios of the US energy sector suggest that the variability of carbon-free power can be economically addressed using dispatchable natural gas-fueled generation. Globally, natural gas resources are not as plentiful or low cost; consequently, some regions of the world are anticipated to continue to rely upon coal generation, even as they pursue decarbonization efforts. To support the increased utilization of variable renewable generation in these coal-dependent regions, plant designs must target low-capacity factor coal plants with increased emphasis on flexibility attributes such as start-up times, ramp rates, minimum load, and part-load heat rates. While much work has been performed on the improvement of the flexibility for existing coal plants originally designed for baseload service, little public literature exists on clean sheet design for flexible operation. This conceptual design study aims to define the features, performance characteristics, and costs for greenfield coal plants intended for flexible operation. Quantifying these characteristics provides critical information required by utility owners, grid planners, energy market modelers, and energy policy decision makers in coal-dependent regions of the world to better understand how coal-fired power plants can support a transition to low carbon generation.

Functional characterization of glycosyltransferases in duckweed to enable predictive biology

Glycosyltransferases (GTs) catalyze the formation of glycosidic linkages to produce almost all complex carbohydrates. This project used a multi-disciplinary, high-throughput (HTP) biochemical and computational biology approach focused on duckweed as a model energy crop, to study carbohydrate metabolic processes. To achieve this, developed and carried out out high-throughput (HTP) functional characterization of plant glycosyltransferases (GTs) role of enzymatic microenvironments be assessed through a combined proteomic and computational biology approach, and the combined data was used to populate deep-learning frameworks to predict plant GT function. Functional validation achieved through this research is being used to assign gene function and study plant processes at the systems level to efficiently link the genome sequence with gene function. Together, the combined approaches used within this study provide a foundation for how computational prediction, in combination with high-throughput functional validation, can be used to study plant processes at the systems level and translate knowledge gained to efficiently link genome sequence with gene function in a species agnostic manner.

Generating traffic-based building occupancy schedules in Chattanooga, Tennessee from a grid of traffic sensors

Building occupancy significantly impacts energy use, timing for demand impacts, and is a significant source of uncertainty in building energy models. There are relatively few sources that define building occupancy schedules and number of occupants per building or space type. More importantly, these sources define traditional schedules that are likely not to reflect the true occupancy of a given building. We construct traffic-based occupancy schedules which are more responsive to changes in mobility patterns, and which can realistically estimate occupant arrivals, departures, and counts in individual buildings.

Data-Driven Modeling and Optimization of Building Energy Consumption: a Case Study

Installing sensors and Building Automation Systems (BAS) allows controlling the facility operations while generating data that can be analyzed for model development. This work focuses on data-driven modeling of the building to optimize energy consumption. The City of Orlando aims to reduce its energy consumption so, they provided us access to their BAS for data and studying the operation of its facilities. We selected a mid-size pilot building to conduct data analysis and modeling. We develop an Application Programming Interface (API) to login to the servers and scrape data. The scraped data contains features ranging from environmental conditions to equipment activity. This dataset is a time series so, it's handled in accordance and analyzed to investigate patterns and relations between data points that help choose parameters for predictive models for building and equipment. Finally, the models are optimized to reduce the energy consumption of the facility.

Modeling Variable Renewable Energy and Storage in the Power Sector

The emergence of variable renewable energy and battery storage technologies have fundamentally transformed the electric power sector and generated demand for analysis to understand their roles in future energy systems. Although unique characteristics of these resources are well-recognized and require more sophisticated methodologies to capture effectively, guidance is limited on best practices and research gaps. This paper selectively reviews recent literature and draws upon our collective modeling experience to offer recommendations to analysts and consumers of model outputs on approaches for modeling variable renewable energy and storage in long-term electric sector models. We focus on regional- and national-scale models with technological, temporal, and spatial detail given their prevalence in planning and policy analysis, though insights are applicable in other settings. The review highlights how the research frontier has advanced in representing renewables and energy storage over the past decade; however, given the many considerations involved with appropriately capturing salient economic and operational characteristics of renewables, there is a gap between commonly used models and state-of-the-art methods. Model simplifications can materially impact policy analysis associated with power sector decarbonization and high renewables deployment, and improving model representations of variable renewables can enhance insights for policymakers and other stakeholders. This review can point the way for improved methods for established models and designs for emerging ones.

A dynamic 2D Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) model for enhanced computational efficiency

Progressing toward a future increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources, the development of effective, durable energy storage solutions becomes essential to balance supply and demand fluctuations. Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) is a long-duration thermal energy storage technology that captures excess heat generated from renewable energy sources and stores it underground for later use, enabling the efficient utilization of sustainable energy. This approach is particularly valuable in district energy networks when integrated with Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) to provide stable heating and cooling. However, traditional three-dimensional (3D) numerical models of BTES systems demand extensive computational resources, limiting their practicality for real-time and large-scale applications. This study introduces a novel two-dimensional (2D) modeling approach that reduces computational costs while maintaining high accuracy. By employing a radial ring-based discretization method, the model simulates heat injection, retention, and retrieval dynamics over seasonal cycles. A new thermal-mass weighted-average temperature parameter is introduced to evaluate the performance of BTES systems. Model validation against FEFLOW simulations demonstrates a 17-fold improvement in computational speed compared to traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models while achieving a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 2 % during charging and 4 % during discharging. Additionally, a trade-off analysis between computational efficiency and accuracy is conducted, ensuring the model's applicability for real-world scenarios. The findings of this research contribute to the development of computationally efficient BTES models, facilitating better optimization, control, and integration into renewable energy systems. This work provides a foundation for further studies in techno-economic analysis, multi-year performance evaluation, and real-time operational strategies for BTES applications, supporting a more sustainable energy future.
