X-ray Scintillating Lanthanide-Based Coordination Polymers

Reported are the syntheses and characterization of 25 lanthanide-containing coordination polymers exhibiting four structure types: type I′: [Ln(TFTP) 1.5 (bpy)] (Ln = La 3+ –Nd 3+ ), type I: [Ln(TFTP) 1.5 (bpy)(H 2 O)] (Ln = Sm 3+ –Lu 3+ ), type II′: [Pr(TFTP) 1.5 (phen)], and type II: [Ln(TFTP) 1.5 (phen)(H 2 O)] (Ln = Nd 3+ –Yb 3+ , excluding Pm). These compounds feature lanthanide metal cations bound to tetrafluoroterephthalate linkers (TFTP) and either, 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) capping ligands. Initial calculations using crystallographic data revealed large void spaces, ranging from 86 Å 3 in type I to 333 Å 3 in type II. Yet, adsorption isotherm data indicate very little gas uptake of both materials with a BET surface area of 9 m 2 /g for I-Tb (8) and 19 m 2 /g for II-Tb (20). X-ray irradiation of I-Eu (6), II-Eu (18), I-Tb (8), and II-Tb (20) produced visible red and green emission, respectively. Furthermore, radioluminescence studies of both type I and II with Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ , and Tb 3+ metal centers indicate that both structure types featuring Tb 3+ are brighter than those with Eu 3+ or Sm 3+ . Notably, structure type I with Tb 3+ is the brightest scintillator with a relative luminosity of 1.7× that of bismuth germanate (BGO).

Cooling-Rate-Driven Polymorphism and Vacancy Ordering in Ce 2 MnGe 6 Intergrowth Phases

Intergrowth phases in intermetallic systems provide a compelling framework for investigating structure–property relationships as a function of crystallographic subunit stacking. In this study, we examine the influence of Mn vacancy ordering on subunit stacking and reassign the structure of Ce 2 MnGe 6 to a monoclinic C2/m space group (a = 8.3486(17) Å, b = 8.6181(18) Å, c = 10.778(2) Å, β = 101.17(2)°). Additionally, we report a monoclinic polymorph of the Ln 2 MGe 6 family characterized as a tripled c-axis supercell derivative of monoclinic Ce 2 MnGe 6 , 3×c-Ce 2 MnGe 6 (a = 8.3482(16) Å, b = 8.6179(18) Å, c = 31.813(6) Å, β = 93.763(7)°). This polymorph emerges under rapid cooling conditions during the synthesis and offers insight into the structural relationship between the orthorhombic and monoclinic variants of the Ln 2 MGe 6 phases. Notably, the supercell form of Ce 2 MnGe 6 (3×c-Ce 2 MnGe 6 ) exhibits increased electrical resistivity and suggests enhanced Zintl-like behavior, potentially indicating greater thermodynamic stability relative to the parent monoclinic phase.

Fundamental Thermodynamic, Kinetic, and Mechanical Properties of Lithium and Its Alloys

Lithium alloying reactions are beneficial in promoting uniform plating and stripping of lithium metal in all-solid-state batteries. First-principles calculations are performed to predict thermodynamic, kinetic, and mechanical properties of lithium and several important Li–M alloys (M = Mg, Ag, Zn, Al, Ga, In, Sn, Sb, and Bi). While the Li–Mg binary system forms a solid solution, most other lithium–metal alloys prefer stoichiometric intermetallic compounds with common local motifs that enable fast Li diffusion. Lithium and Li-rich alloys exhibit an unusually flat energy landscape along paths that connect BCC to close-packed structures like FCC and HCP, with important implications for mechanical properties. Very low migration barriers for Li diffusion that rival those of superion conductors are predicted, both in pure Li and in Li–M intermetallics. However, vacancy concentration, which is crucial for substitutional diffusion, is predicted to be low in metallic Li and most Li–M intermetallics. Compounds such as B32 LiAl and LiGa as well as D0 3 Li 3 Sb and Li 3 Bi exhibit structural vacancies at higher ends of their voltage windows, which together with low migration barriers leads to exceptionally high Li mobilities. In the Li–Mg solid solution, the addition of Mg is found to decrease the vacancy tracer diffusion coefficient by an order of magnitude.

Lattice Dynamics and Structural Phase Transitions in Eu 2 O 3

Using the density functional theory, we study the structural and lattice dynamical properties of europium sesquioxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) in the cubic, trigonal, and monoclinic phases. The obtained lattice parameters and energies of the Raman modes show a good agreement with the available experimental data. The Eu-partial phonon density of states calculated for the cubic structure is compared with the nuclear inelastic scattering data obtained from a 20 nm thick Eu 2 O 3 film deposited on a YSZ substrate. A small shift of the experimental spectrum to higher energies results from a compressive strain induced by the substrate. On the basis of lattice and phonon properties, we analyze the mechanisms of structural transitions between different phases of Eu 2 O 3 .

Chemical Pressure-Derived Assembly Principles for Dodecagonal Quasicrystal Approximants and Other Complex Frank–Kasper Phases

The structures of complex intermetallic compounds can often be interpreted in terms of assemblies of units from simpler parent phases. For example, dodecagonal quasicrystals appear, when viewed down their high-symmetry axes, as plane-filling arrangements of square and triangular tiles corresponding to the Cr 3 Si and Al 3 Zr 4 structure types, respectively. The atomic arrangements and cell-dimensions at the (100) faces of the cells of these structures provide a close geometrical match, which underlies not only dodecagonal quasicrystals and their approximants, but also the much more common σ-phase structure. In this Article, we show that such intergrowth of parent structures can arise from more than just geometrical coincidences, but can be driven by a complementary matching of atomic packing forces. DFT-Chemical Pressure (CP) analysis on elemental versions of the Cr 3 Si and Al 3 Zr 4 types reveal that in both cases arrays of positive interatomic pressures inhibit the formation of optimal contacts elsewhere in the structures. When they are lined up at the potential Cr 3 Si/Al 3 Zr 4 interfaces, however, positive pressures from the two structures interdigitate rather than coincide, providing the opportunity for the relaxation of strained interatomic contacts. That such relief is afforded by the interfaces is confirmed by CP analysis of the σ-phase (FeCr-type) structure. Building on this scheme, we introduce the CP interface function to represent how the CP features of atoms within a structure impact planes or other surfaces that could serve as interfaces between different structures. Using this function, we then explore how the favorability of interfaces between Cr 3 Si and Al 3 Zr 4 -type units is tuned by partial elemental substitution with Si, as well as their potential matches with Laves phase units. Furthermore, the emerging picture provides an account for features of the quasicrystal approximants Mn 7 VSi 2 and Mn 81.5 Si 18.5 , as well as a framework for approaching intermetallic intergrowth structures more broadly.

High-Pressure Polymorphism in Silver Ferrite Delafossite, AgFeO 2

The delafossites are a class of layered metal oxides that are notable for being able to exhibit optical trans- parency alongside an in-plane electrical conductivity, making them promising platforms for the development of transparent conductive oxides. Pressure-induced polymorphism offers a direct method for altering the electrical and optical properties in this class, and although the copper delafossites have been studied extensively under pressure, the silver delafossites remain only partially studied. We report two new high-pressure polymorphs of silver ferrite delafossite, AgFeO 2 , that are stabilized above ~6 GPa and ~14 GPa. In situ X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy measurements are used to examine the structural changes across the two phase transitions. The high-pressure structure between 6–14 GPa is assigned as a monoclinic C2/c structure that is analogous to the high-pressure phase reported for AgGaO 2 . As a result, nuclear resonant forward scattering reveals no change in the spin state or valence state at the Fe 3+ site up to 15.3 GPa.

Electroreduction-Driven Formation and Connectivity of Polyoxometalate Coordination Networks

We present the synthesis of metal oxide coordination networks based on Preyssler-type polyoxoanions ([NaP 5 W 30 O 110 ] 14– and [NaP 5 MoW 29 O 110 ] 14– ) bridged with metal–aquo complexes ([M(H 2 O) n ] m+ , M m+ = Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ , Y 3+ ), induced by electrochemical reduction. Networks bridged with first-row transition metals are isostructural with a previously reported Co-bridged structure, while the Y 3+ -bridged structure is new. All networks feature an uncommon binding motif of the metal cation to the oxygen atoms at cap positions, which we hypothesize is due to increased electron density at the cap upon reduction. Oxidation of a Zn 2+ -bridged network resulted in a new structure in which Zn 2+ –O cap bonds are lost, indicating the importance of reduction in the connectivity of these polyoxometalate-based coordination networks.

Ice Phase Classification Made Easy with Score-Based Denoising

Accurate identification of ice phases is essential for understanding various physicochemical phenomena. However, such classification for structures simulated with molecular dynamics is complicated by the complex symmetries of ice polymorphs and thermal fluctuations. For this purpose, both traditional order parameters and data-driven machine learning approaches have been employed, but they often rely on expert intuition, specific geometric information, or large training data sets. In this work, we present an unsupervised phase classification framework that combines a score-based denoiser model with a subsequent model-free classification method to accurately identify ice phases. Further, the denoiser model is trained on perturbed synthetic data of ideal reference structures, eliminating the need for large data sets and labeling efforts. The classification step utilizes the smooth overlap of atomic position (SOAP) descriptors as the atomic fingerprint, ensuring Euclidean symmetries and transferability to various structural systems. Our approach achieves a remarkable 100% accuracy in distinguishing ice phases of test trajectories using only seven ideal reference structures of ice phases as model inputs. This demonstrates the generalizability of the score-based denoiser model in facilitating phase identification for complex molecular systems. The proposed classification strategy can be broadly applied to investigate structural evolution and phase identification for a wide range of materials, offering new insights into the fundamental understanding of water and other complex systems.

From Molecules to Solids: A vdW-DF-C09 Case Study of the Mercury Dihalides

The mercury dihalides show a remarkable diversity in the structural preferences in their minimum energy structure types, spanning molecular to strongly bound ionic solids. A challenge in the development of density functional methods for extended systems is to arrive at strategies that serve equally well such a broad range of bonding modes or structural preferences. The chemical bonding and the stabilities of mercury dihalides and the general utility and reliability of the van der Waals density functional with C09 exchange (vdW-DF-C09) in predicting or describing the energetics and structural preferences in these metal dihalides is examined. Here, we show that, in contrast with the uncorrected generalized gradient approximation of the Perdew-Burke-Erzenhoff (PBE) exchange-correlation functional, qualitative and quantitative patterns in the bonding of the mercury dihalide solids are well reproduced with vdW-DF-C09 for the full series of HgX 2 systems for X = F, Cl, Br, and I. The possible existence of a low-temperature cotunnite polymorph for HgF 2 and PbF 2 is posited.

Kinetics of Shear-Induced Structural Ordering in Dense Colloids

The macroscopic rheological response of a colloidal solution is highly correlated with the local microscopic structure, as revealed by an in situ Rheo-SAXS experiment with a high temporal resolution. Oscillatory shear can induce a strain-controlled ordering-to-disorder transition, resulting in a shear-thickening process that is different from the normal shear-thickening behavior that is driven by hydrodynamics and particle friction. Here, we reveal that there is a complex time-dependent kinetics toward structural ordering under different applied strains. When the strain amplitude reaches a critical value that starts to induce disordering in the system, the pathway toward the dynamic equilibrium can also become highly non-monotonic. Within the same oscillatory cycle, there is a strong correlation of ordering with different phases of the oscillation, with the system oscillating between two dynamic metastable states.

Probing Molecular Assembly of Small Organic Molecules during Meniscus-Guided Coating Using Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Approaches

Evaporation-based thin-film coating processes are ubiquitous in fields such as organic electronics, dye coatings, and the pharmaceutical industry. Based on experimental observations of enhanced thin-film alignment during meniscus-guided coating (MGC), a molecular dynamics simulation was developed to describe the thin-film formation that occurs due to the interplay between evaporation and fluid dynamics. The process of solvent evaporation from solution is first examined, which leads to the formation of a solid thin film after evaporation is complete. Next, an MGC process was simulated by introducing a flow profile coupled with the evaporative system. In this work, we gain insights into how molecules respond and reorient in the presence of a flow profile. These results indicate that both the evaporation and the flow profile have an impact on orienting small molecules in a thin film during the MCG process. Combining experimental techniques with simulations helps enhance the understanding of the forces that are significant in directing molecular aggregation during coating processes.

Strong Relativistic Effects in Lanthanide-Based Single-Molecule Magnets

Lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are promising building blocks for quantum memory and spintronic devices. Designing lanthanide-based SMMs with long spin relaxation time requires a detailed understanding of their electronic structure, including the crucial role of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). While traditional calculations of SOC using the perturbation theory applied to a solution of the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation are valid for light atoms, this approach is questionable for systems containing heavy elements such as lanthanides. We investigate the accuracy of the perturbation estimates of SOC by variationally solving the Dirac equation for the [DyO] + molecule, a prototype of a lanthanide-based SMM. We show that the energy splittings between the M J states involved in spin relaxation depend on the interplay between strong SOC and dynamic electron correlations. Here, we demonstrate that this interplay affects the resonances between the spin and vibrational transitions, and, therefore, the spin relaxation time.
