NASA’s Approach to Lunar Communication and Navigation: Artemis and Beyond

NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program is developing a support structure of networks, partners, and technologies to provide communication, position, navigation, and timing services at the Moon. In this paper, we describe the progress and status of these diverse efforts and the ways in which they will be used during NASA’s crewed lunar exploration program, Artemis. We provide an update on developments at NASA which are targeted to cislunar space, including the Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O) demonstration mission, planned Lunar Exploration Ground Sites (LEGS) that will offer a dedicated Direct to Earth (DTE) capability servicing the cislunar region, and a recently released RFP for commercial Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation Services as well as Direct to Earth communications capabilities. We also describe the current status and key role of the LunaNet Interoperability Specification (LNIS), a collaborative standards framework developed by NASA, international partner agencies, and commercial stakeholders. A common thread, weaving these efforts together, is the support of commercial enterprises that can meet the Artemis challenge. Together, these projects and activities will enable safe, robust, and reliable communications and position, navigation, and timing (PNT) services for both crewed and uncrewed missions across cislunar space. SCaN and NASA, with our partners, are helping to build the foundation for a long term, sustainable human presence at the Moon –one that will set the stage for similar efforts at Mars.

Ink Casting and 3D‐Extrusion Printing of Yb 14 MnSb 11 for High‐Temperature Thermoelectric Material

Abstract Complex shapes are created from Yb 14 MnSb 11 , a high‐temperature thermoelectric Zintl phase, via a two‐step process: i) layer‐by‐layer 3D‐extrusion of ink containing partially‐reacted powders which are ball‐milled from a blend of Yb, MnSb, and Sb powders; ii) heat treatment to synthesize the ternary compound Yb 14 MnSb 11 and densify the extruded powders. A high phase purity for Yb 14 MnSb 11 (83–94%) is achieved in both cast and 3D‐extruded ink specimens via a solid‐state reaction between Yb, MnSb, and Yb 4 Sb 3 during reactive sintering. Pressure‐free sintering at temperatures of 1200–1400 °C densifies the powders to 82% relative density but can also induce the decomposition of the Yb 14 MnSb 11 phase due to Yb sublimation. A process window with optimized sintering temperature and time is identified, achieving both low porosity and high phase purity and reaching a maximum zT = 0.61 at 1000 °C, about half of the maximum zT value for bulk Yb 14 MnSb 11 made via conventional processes (pressure sintering of precursor powders). The present approach – direct ink writing of ball‐milled powders, combined with reactive sintering – is a scalable and affordable method to fabricate thermoelectric legs with intricate 3D shapes, for enhanced performances in high‐temperature thermoelectric applications.

Toward High Conversion Efficiency of Thermoelectric Modules through Synergistical Optimization of Layered Materials

Abstract Waste‐heat electricity generation using high‐efficiency solid‐state conversion technology can significantly decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Here, a synergistical optimization of layered half‐Heusler (hH) materials and module to improve thermoelectric conversion efficiency is reported. This is realized by manufacturing multiple thermoelectric materials with major compositional variations and temperature‐gradient‐coupled carrier distribution by one‐step spark plasma sintering. This strategy provides a solution to overcome the intrinsic concomitants of the conventional segmented architecture that only considers the matching of the figure of merit ( zT ) with the temperature gradient. The current design is dedicated to temperature‐gradient‐coupled resistivity and compatibility matching, optimum zT matching, and reducing contact resistance sources. By enhancing the quality factor of the materials by Sb‐vapor‐pressure‐induced annealing, a superior zT of 1.47 at 973 K is achieved for (Nb, Hf)FeSb hH alloys. Along with the low‐temperature high‐ zT hH alloys of (Nb, Ta, Ti, V)FeSb, the single stage layered hH modules are developed with efficiencies of ≈15.2% and ≈13.5% for the single‐leg and unicouple thermoelectric modules, respectively, under Δ T of 670 K. Therefore, this work has a transformative impact on the design and development of next‐generation thermoelectric generators for any thermoelectric material families.

Compared to common types of Au(I) coordination, such as linear, trigonal planar, and tetrahedral units observed in extended solids, the square planar coordination is rare. Au(I)relia, shown in the cover image, exhibits the 3-centered bonding of Au-Tt-Au and Au-Pn-Au (on her feathers), square planar cis-[AuTt2Pn2] units (her pendant), and linear …-Au-Au-Au-… chains (her legs) that are characteristic of the novel equiatomic AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs compounds. High-resolution measurements of microphysics and entrainment in marine stratocumulus clouds

High-resolution measurements from the Airborne Cloud-Turbulence Observation System (ACTOS) during the Azores Stratocumulus Measurements of Radiation, Turbulence and Aerosols (ACORES) campaign are analysed for an investigation of the vertical profiles of microphysical properties and entrainment velocity ( W e ) in marine stratocumulus clouds. Here, the vertical profiles show the transition from the cloudy layer to free troposphere with nearly linear profiles of total water mixing ratio, liquid water potential temperature and virtual potential temperature, but the thickness of entrainment interfacial layer varies significantly. Sharp transitions of cloud microphysical and optical properties within a single horizontal flight leg are found in one stratocumulus cloud system. They seem to be related to the local environmental conditions, such as the wind shear and turbulent dissipation rate. W e values estimated by three methods show consistent tendencies in general and are clearly related to the local environmental conditions, such as vertical shear of the horizontal wind and turbulence intensity. However, the magnitudes of W e values differ by up to two orders of magnitude depending on the methods, which suggests that the estimation of W e from in situ measurements is still a challenge. Analysis of the microphysical response to entrainment suggests that inhomogeneous mixing occurs dominantly. On the other hand, the analysis results for the clouds under more humid conditions indicate a higher likelihood of homogeneous mixing.

Three-loop soft function for energetic electroweak boson production at hadron colliders

We calculate the three-loop soft function for the production of an electroweak boson (Higgs, γ , W ± , Z ) with large transverse momentum at a hadron collider. It is the first time a soft function for a three-parton process is computed at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO). As a technical novelty, we perform the calculation in terms of forward-scattering-type loop diagrams rather than evaluating phase space integrals. Our three-loop result contains color-tripole contributions and explicitly confirms predictions on the universal infrared structure of QCD scattering amplitudes with three massless parton legs. The soft function is a central ingredient in the factorized cross section for electroweak boson production near the kinematic endpoint (threshold), where the invariant mass of the recoiling hadronic radiation is small compared to its transverse momentum. Our result is required for predictions of the near-threshold cross sections at N 3 LO and for the resummation of threshold logarithms at primed next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N 3 LL') accuracy.

Integrands of less-supersymmetric Yang-Mills at one loop

We construct a prescriptive, bubble power-counting basis of one-loop integrands suitable for representing amplitude integrands in less-supersymmetric (1 ≤ $\mathcal{N}$ ≤ 4) Yang-Mills theory. With the exception of massless bubbles, all integrands have unambiguous, leading singularities as coefficients defined in field theory; for the massless bubbles on external legs, we find two natural choices which lead to different integrands that highlight distinct aspects of field theory. For concreteness, we give the all-multiplicity integrands for MHV amplitudes, and the split-helicity amplitude integrand for six-particle NMHV. The basis we construct is mostly pure and is divided into to separately UV- and IR-finite sectors of fixed transcendental weight, resulting in UV- and IR-finite ratio functions of n-particle helicity amplitudes.

A three-point form factor through five loops

We bootstrap the three-point form factor of the chiral part of the stresstensor supermultiplet in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory, obtaining new results at three, four, and five loops. Our construction employs known conditions on the first, second, and final entries of the symbol, combined with new multiple-final-entry conditions, “extended-Steinmann-like” conditions, and near-collinear data from the recently-developed form factor operator product expansion. Our results are expected to give the maximally transcendental parts of the gg → Hg and H → ggg amplitudes in the heavy-top limit of QCD. At two loops, the extended-Steinmann-like space of functions we describe contains all transcendental functions required for four-point amplitudes with one massive and three massless external legs, and all massless internal lines, including processes such as gg → Hg and γ * → $q\overline{q}g$. We expect the extended-Steinmann-like space to contain these amplitudes at higher loops as well, although not to arbitrarily high loop order. We present evidence that the planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 three-point form factor can be placed in an even smaller space of functions, with no independent ζ values at weights two and three.

On positive geometry and scattering forms for matter particles

We initiate the study of positive geometry and scattering forms for tree-level amplitudes with matter particles in the (anti-)fundamental representation of the color/flavor group. As a toy example, we study the bi-color scalar theory, which supplements the bi-adjoint theory with scalars in the (anti-)fundamental representations of both groups. Using a recursive construction we obtain a class of unbounded polytopes called open associahedra (or associahedra with certain facets at infinity) whose canonical form computes amplitudes in bi-color theory, for arbitrary number of legs and flavor assignments. In addition, we discuss the duality between color factors and wedge products, or "color is kinematics", for amplitudes with matter particles as well.

Massive spinning bosons on the celestial sphere

A natural extension of the Pasterski-Shao-Strominger (PSS) prescription is described, enabling the map of Minkowski space amplitudes with massive spinning external legs to the celestial sphere to be performed. An integral representation for the conformal primary wave function (CPW) of massive spinning bosons on the celestial sphere is derived explicitly for spin-one and -two. By analogy with the spin-zero case, the spinning bulk-to-boundary propagator on Euclidean AdS is employed to extend the massive CPW integral representation to arbitrary integer spin, and to describe the appropriate inverse transform of massive spinning CPWs back to the plane wave basis in Minkowski space. Subsequently, a massive spin-s momentum operator representation on the celestial sphere is determined, and used in conjunction with known Lorentz generators to derive Poincaré symmetry constraints on generic massive spinning two-, three- and four-point celestial amplitude structures. Finally, as a consistency check, three-point Minkowski space amplitudes of two massless scalars and a spin-one or -two massive boson are explicitly mapped to the celestial sphere, and the resulting three-point function coefficients are confirmed to be in exact agreement with the results obtained from Poincaré symmetry constraints.

Cross-section measurements for the production of a Z boson in association with high-transverse-momentum jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Cross-section measurements for a $Z$ boson produced in association with high-transverse-momentum jets ($p_T$ ≥ 100 GeV) and decaying into a charged-lepton pair ($e^+$$e^–$, $µ^+$$µ^–$) are presented. The measurements are performed using proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Measurements of angular correlations between the $Z$ boson and the closest jet are performed in events with at least one jet with $p_T$ ≥ 500 GeV. Event topologies of particular interest are the collinear emission of a $Z$ boson in dijet events and a boosted $Z$ boson recoiling against a jet. Fiducial cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. The data are found to agree with next-to-nextto-leading-order predictions by NNLOjet and with the next-to-leading-order multi-leg generators MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and Sherpa.

Matter couplings and equivalence principles for soft scalars

Scalar effective field theories with enhanced soft limits behave in many ways like gauge theories and gravity. In particular, symmetries fix the structure of interactions and the tree-level S-matrix in both types of theories. We explore how this analogy persists in the presence of matter by considering theories with additional fields coupled to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar or the special galileon in a way that is consistent with their symmetries. Using purely on-shell arguments, we show that these theories obey analogues of the S-matrix equivalence principle whereby all matter fields must couple to the DBI scalar or the special galileon through a particular quartic vertex with a universal coupling. These equivalence principles imply the universality of the leading double soft theorems in these theories, which are scalar analogues of Weinberg’s gravitational soft theorem, and can be used to rule out interactions with massless higher-spin fields when combined with analogues of the generalized Weinberg-Witten theorem. We verify in several examples that amplitudes with external matter fields nontrivially exhibit enhanced single soft limits and we show that such amplitudes can be constructed using soft recursion relations when they have sufficiently many external DBI or special galileon legs, including amplitudes with massive higher-spin fields. As part of our analysis we construct a recently conjectured special galileon-vector effective field theory.

Causality, unitarity and symmetry in effective field theory

Sum rules in effective field theories, predicated upon causality, place restrictions on scattering amplitudes mediated by effective contact interactions. Through unitarity of the S -matrix, these imply that the size of higher dimensional corrections to transition amplitudes between different states is bounded by the strength of their contributions to elastic forward scattering processes. This places fundamental limits on the extent to which hypothetical symmetries can be broken by effective interactions. All analysis is for dimension 8 operators in the forward limit. Included is a thorough derivation of all positivity bounds for a chiral fermion in SU(2) and SU(3) global symmetry representations resembling those of the Standard Model, general bounds on flavour violation, new bounds for interactions between particles of different spin, inclusion of loops of dimension 6 operators and illustration of the resulting strengthening of positivity bounds over tree-level expectations, a catalogue of supersymmetric effective interactions up to mass dimension 8 and 4 legs and the demonstration that supersymmetry unifies the positivity theorems as well as the new bounds.

Hollow-grams: generalized entanglement wedges from the gravitational path integral

Recently, Bousso and Penington (BP) made a proposal for the entanglement wedge associated to a gravitating bulk region. In this paper, we derive this proposal in time-reflection symmetric settings using the gravitational path integral. To do this, we exploit the connection between random tensor networks (RTNs) and fixed-geometry states in gravity. We define the entropy of a bulk region in an RTN by removing tensors in that region and computing the entropy of the open legs thus generated in the “hollowed” RTN. We thus derive the BP proposal for RTNs and hence, also for fixed-geometry states in gravity. By then expressing a general holographic state as a superposition over fixed-geometry states and using a diagonal approximation, we provide a general gravitational path integral derivation of the BP proposal. We demonstrate that the saddles computing the Rényi entropy Sn depend on how the bulk region is gauge-invariantly specified. Nevertheless, we show that the BP proposal is universally reproduced in the n → 1 limit.

Color-kinematics dual representations of one-loop matrix elements in the open-superstring effective action

Abstract Theα ′ -expansion of string theory provides a rich set of higher-dimension operators, indexed byζvalues, which can be used to study color-kinematics duality and the double copy. These two powerful properties, actually first noticed in tree-level string amplitudes, simplify the construction of both gauge and gravity amplitudes. However, their applicability and limitations are not fully understood. We attempt to construct a set of color-kinematics dual numerators at one loop and four points for insertions of operator combinations corresponding to the lowest fourζ 2 -free operator insertions from the open superstring:ζ 3 ,ζ 5 ,$$ {\zeta}_3^2 $$ ζ 3 2 , andζ 7 . We succeed in finding a representation for the first three in terms of box, triangle, and bubble numerators. In the case ofζ 7 we find an obstruction to a fully color-dual representation related to the bubble-on-external-leg type diagrams. We discuss two paths around this obstruction, both of which signal an incompatability between color-kinematics duality and manifesting certain desired properties. Using the constructed color-dual numerators, we find two different Bern-Carrasco-Johansson double copies that produce candidate closed-string-insertion numerators. Both approaches to the double copy match the kinematics of the cuts, with relative normalization set by either summing over both double copies including degeneracy or by including an explicit prefactor on the double-copy numerator definitions.

Analytic amplitudes for a pair of Higgs bosons in association with three partons

The pair production of Higgs bosons at the LHC can give information about the triple Higgs boson coupling. We perform an analytic one-loop calculation of the amplitudes for a pair of Higgs bosons in association with three partons, retaining the exact dependence on the quark mass circulating in the loop. These amplitudes constitute the real radiation corrections in the calculation of Higgs boson pair production at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling. The results of an analytic generalised-unitarity computation are simplified via analytic reconstruction in spinor variables. Compact ansätze for kinematic pole residues are iteratively fitted via p-adic evaluations near said poles and subtracted until no pole remains. A new ansatz construction is introduced to minimally parametrise coefficients of amplitudes with multiple massive external legs. The simplified expressions are faster to evaluate than automatic codes and can lead to more stable results near singular regions.

Measurement of the production cross section of pairs of isolated photons in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of prompt photon-pair production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events with two photons in the well-instrumented region of the detector are selected. The photons are required to be isolated and have a transverse momentum of p T, γ1(2) > 40 (30) GeV for the leading (sub-leading) photon. The differential cross sections as functions of several observables for the diphoton system are measured and compared with theoretical predictions from state-of-the-art Monte Carlo and fixed-order calculations. The QCD predictions from next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations and multi-leg merged calculations are able to describe the measured integrated and differential cross sections within uncertainties, whereas lower-order calculations show significant deviations, demonstrating that higher-order perturbative QCD corrections are crucial for this process. The resummed predictions with parton showers additionally provide an excellent description of the low transverse-momentum regime of the diphoton system.

Unitarity violation and the geometry of Higgs EFTs

We derive the scale of unitarity violation from the geometry of Effective Field Theory (EFT) extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector. The high-energy behavior of amplitudes with more than four scalar legs depends on derivatives of geometric invariants with respect to the physical Higgs field h, such that higher-point amplitudes begin to reconstruct the scalar manifold away from our vacuum. In theories whose low-energy limit can be described by the Higgs EFT (HEFT) but not the Standard Model EFT (SMEFT), non-analyticities in the vicinity of our vacuum limit the radius of convergence of geometric invariants, leading to unitarity violation at energies below 4πv. Our results unify approaches to the HEFT/SMEFT dichotomy based on unitarity, analyticity, and geometry, and more broadly illustrate the sense in which observables probe the geometry of an EFT. Along the way, we provide novel basis-independent results for Goldstone/Higgs boson scattering amplitudes expressed in terms of geometric covariant quantities.
