Impact of dynamic Jahn-Teller effect on magnetic excitations, lattice vibration, and thermal conductivity in U 𝑥 ⁢T⁢h 1−𝑥 ⁡O 2 system

Vibrational and magnetic properties of single-crystal uranium-thorium dioxide (U 𝑥 ⁢T⁢h 1−𝑥⁡ O 2 ) with a full range of 0 < 𝑥 < 1 are investigated. Thorium dioxide is a diamagnet whose thermal properties are governed by lattice vibration. The addition of paramagnetic uranium ions leads to the emergence of magnetic effects that alter the thermophysical properties noticeably even at room temperature. The interaction of phonons with magnetic moments of uranium 5⁢𝑓 electrons mediated by magnetoelastic coupling results in an anomalous low-temperature thermal conductivity profile. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicates a departure from the Curie-Weiss relationship characteristic of noninteracting paramagnetic ions, previously associated with the dynamic Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect characterized by coupling between spin and the oxygen sublattice. The T 2⁢g Raman peak position follows a nonlinear trend as a function of uranium concentration and hints that these Raman active optical modes play a role in either DJT or in mediating quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. A first-principle-based thermal transport model is implemented to explain the low-temperature transport measurements, where the anomalous reduction is attributed to phonon-spin resonant scattering. The interplay between spins and phonons is also captured using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) measurements of phonon linewidths. Our results provide insights into the phonon interactions with the magnetic excitations governing DJT effect and impacting the low-temperature thermal transport processes in this material system. Furthermore, these findings have implications for understanding low-temperature thermal transport and magnetic properties in advanced materials for information processing and energy applications.

Evidence of dynamical effects and critical field in a cobalt spin crossover complex

The [Co(SQ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ] complex exhibits dynamical effects over a wide range of temperature. Additionally, the orbital moment, determined by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) with decreasing applied magnetic field, indicates a nonzero critical field for net alignment of magnetic moments, an effect not seen with the spin moment of [Co(SQ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ].

On the Neutrino Millicharge

The neutrino luminosity of a degenerate electron gas in a strong magnetic field under conditions of the neutron-star crust owing to plasmon decay to a neutrino pair via a nonstandard mechanism associated with the hypothesized neutrino electric millicharge is calculated. Relative upper bounds on the magnitude of the millicharge are obtained from a comparison of the results of this calculation with the neutrino luminosity caused by the respective standard process and with the luminosity induced by the neutrino magnetic moment.

Localized spin-orbit polaron in magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

The kagome lattice Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 exhibits the quintessential topological phenomena of a magnetic Weyl semimetal such as the chiral anomaly and Fermi-arc surface states. Probing its magnetic properties is crucial for understanding this correlated topological state. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) combined with first-principle calculations, we report the discovery of localized spin-orbit polarons (SOPs) with three-fold rotation symmetry nucleated around single S-vacancies in Co 3 Sn 2 S 2. The SOPs carry a magnetic moment and a large diamagnetic orbital magnetization of a possible topological origin associated relating to the diamagnetic circulating current around the S-vacancy. Appreciable magneto-elastic coupling of the SOP is detected by nc-AFM and STM. Our findings suggest that the SOPs can enhance magnetism and more robust time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological phenomena. Controlled engineering of the SOPs may pave the way toward practical applications in functional quantum devices.

Electronic and vibrational properties of bulk Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 from first-principles calculations

Here we use density functional theory based ab initio calculations to investigate the structural, vibrational, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered ferromagnet Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (CGT) that has attracted attention for potential spintronic applications. We optimize the structure for a fixed c/a ratio. Our results are in excellent agreement with experimental data on structure, phonons, and electronic properties. The use of van der Waals interactions and relativistic spin-orbit coupling yields accurate lattice constants and interlayer distances. Simultaneously, the adopted theoretical methods lead to a rigorous description of the vibrational normal modes, as well as the valence bands, that are in excellent agreement with Raman spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectra, respectively. The magnetic moment is slightly overestimated, and the magnetic anisotropy has the correct sign but is greater in magnitude than that in experiment. We find that inclusion of the on-site Coulomb repulsion on Cr−3d orbitals worsens agreement with experiment, in contrast to previous studies. Our results provide a path toward ab initio analysis of magnetic heterostructures based on CGT.

Global polarization of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV

In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a global spin polarization, 𝑃 H , of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons along the direction of the system angular momentum was discovered and measured across a broad range of collision energies and demonstrated a trend of increasing 𝑃 H with decreasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. A splitting between Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ polarization may be possible due to their different magnetic moments in a late-stage magnetic field sustained by the quark-gluon plasma which is formed in the collision. The results presented in this study find no significant splitting at the collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV in the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions Beam Energy Scan Phase II using the STAR detector, with an upper limit of 𝑃 $\overline{Λ}$ – 𝑃 Λ < 0.24% and 𝑃 $\overline{Λ}$ – 𝑃 Λ < 0.35%, respectively, at a 95% confidence level. We derive an upper limit on the naive extraction of the late-stage magnetic field of 𝐵 < 9.4 × 10 12 T and 𝐵 < 1.4 × 10 13 T at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV, respectively, although more thorough derivations are needed. Differential measurements of 𝑃 H were performed with respect to collision centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity. With our current acceptance of |𝑦| < 1 and uncertainties, we observe no dependence on transverse momentum and rapidity in this analysis. Furthermore, these results challenge multiple existing model calculations following a variety of different assumptions which have each predicted a strong dependence on rapidity in this collision-energy range.

Tunable magnetic excitations in the honeycomb antiferromagnet (Co,Ni)⁢TiO3

The solid solution of the honeycomb antiferromagnet (AFM) Co0.5⁢Ni0.5⁢TiO3 (CNTO) was synthesized by mixing a 1:1 molar ratio of CoTiO3 (CTO) and NiTiO3 (NTO). Powder neutron scattering was used to determine the structure and magnetic spectrum, where the nuclear and magnetic structures resemble those of the end members. The Néel temperature (T𝑁 = 27 ± 1 K), the ordered magnetic moment (M = 2.29 ± 0.03 𝜇𝐵 per magnetic ion), and lattice parameters are intermediate between those of the two. From inelastic neutron scattering, it is observed that the magnon density of states (MDOS) extends up to 13 meV, and the interaction can be described by an XXZ-type magnetic Hamiltonian. Above 15 meV, spin-orbit excitons (SOEs) are observed similarly to those in CTO, but with modified spin-orbit crystal-field splitting because of the substitution of Ni at Co sites, and the disorder induced by the Ni substitution modifies the spin-orbit crystal field. Thus, the magnetic dynamics of the CNTO cannot be described as a simple average of the two parent compounds.

Oxygen Deficiency and Migration-Mediated Electric Polarization in Magnetic Fe,Co-Substituted SrTiO3−δ

We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to show that oxygen vacancies (vO) and mobility induce noncentrosymmetric polar structures in SrTi1−x−yFexCoyO3−δ (STFC, x=y=0.125) with δ={0.125,0.25}, enhance the saturation magnetization, and give rise to large changes in the electric polarization |ΔP|. We present an intuitive set of rules to describe the properties of STFC, which are based on the interplay between (Co/Fe)-vO defects, magnetic cation coordination, and topological vacancy disorder. STFC structures consist of layered crystals with sheets of linearly organized O4,5,6-coordinated Fe–Co pairs, sandwiched with layers of O5-coordinated Ti. (Co/Fe)-vO defects are the source of crystal distortions, cation off-centering and bending of the oxygen octahedra which, considering the charge redistribution mediated by vO and the cations’ electronegativity and valence states, triggers an effective electric polarization. Oxygen migration for δ=0.125 leads to |ΔP|>∼10 µC/cm2 due to quantum-of-polarization differences between δ=0.125 structures. Increasing the oxygen deficiency to δ=0.25 yields |ΔP|, the O migration of which resolved polarization for δ=0.25 is >∼3 µC/cm2. Magnetism is dominated by the Fe,Co spin states for δ=0.125, and there is a contribution from Ti magnetic moments (∼1 μB) for δ=0.25. Magnetic and electric order parameters change for variations of δ or oxygen migration for a given oxygen deficiency. Our results capture characteristics observed in the end members of the series SrTi(Co,Fe)O3, and suggest the existence of a broader set of rules for oxygen-deficient multiferroic oxides.

Spin-related magnetism of interstellar grains

The magnetic dipole moments and internal magnetic fields due to the spin of electrically charged elongated nonmagnetic interstellar grains in kinetic equilibrium with their surroundings are computed for the grain-size range from 0.01 to 1.0 micron. It is shown that the induced magnetic moments and internal magnetic fields of charged spinning nonmagnetic grains of arbitrary composition and prolate spheroidal shape can be appreciable, possibly even exceeding 0.01 emu/cu cm for 0.01-micron grains. The results indicate that virtually all grains smaller than 0.1 micron in mean diameter, and all elongated grains smaller than about 1 micron in length, are immersed in local magnetic fields due to spin that are much larger than the ambient galactic field. Some implications of this effect are discussed in relation to the polarization of starlight by aligned dust grains and the primordial remanent magnetization found in primitive carbonaceous chondrites.

Strong-field cyclotron scattering. I - Scattering amplitudes and natural line width

The introduction of resonance line width into the QED cyclotron scattering amplitudes is considered. It is shown that the width arises from loop corrections to the electron propagator, which also bring about shifts in the Landau energy levels. A formalism is developed that allows the dressed electron propagator to be derived. It is shown that the states of Herold et al. (1982) and of Sokolov and Ternov (1968), which diagonalize the component of the magnetic moment operator parallel to the external magnetic field, are appropriate for calculation of the scattering amplitudes, whereas the states of Johnson and Lippmann (1949) are not. In addition, it is shown that the Breit-Wigner broadening approximation E tends to E - i(Gamma)/2 is consistent with the perturbation-theoretic order of the calculation, if the former basis states are chosen, but not the latter.

Kinetic and thermodynamic properties of a convecting plasma in a two-dimensional dipole field

Charged particle guiding center motion is considered in the magnetic field of a two-dimensional ('line') dipole on which is superimposed a small, static, perpendicular electric field. The parallel equation of motion is that of a simple harmonic oscillator for cos theta, the cosine of magnetic colatitude theta. Equations for the perpendicular electric and magnetic drifts are derived as well as their bounce-averaged forms. The latter are solved to yield a bounce-averaged guiding center trajectory, which is the same as that obtained from conversation of magnetic moment mu, longitudinal invariant J, and total (kinetic plus electrostatic) energy K. The algebraic simplicity of the trajectory equations is also manifest in the forms of the invariants. An interesting result is that guiding centers drift in such a way that they preserve the values of their equatorial pitch angles and (equivalently) mirror latitudes. The most general Maxwellian form of the equilibrium one-particle distribution function f is constructed from the invariants, and spatially varying density and pressure moments, parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field, are identified. Much of the paper deals with the more restricted problem in which f is specified as a bi-Maxwellian over a straight line of finite length in the equatorial plane of the dipole and perpendicular to field lines. This might be thought of as specifying a cross-tail ion injection source; our formalism then describes the subsequent spatial development. The distribution away from the source is a scaled bi-Maxwellian but one that is cut off at large and small kinetic energies, which depend on position. Density and pressure components are reduced from the values they would have if the total content of individual flux tubes convected intact. The equatorial and meridional variations of density and pressure components are examined and compared systematically for the isotropic and highly anisotropic situations. There appears to be little qualitative difference due to anisotropy. An anisotropy measure is defined, and its spatial variation determined as a signature of possible MHD instability. Extreme values are found, larger than at the source, but the plasma beta in such regions is probably so low as to render the effect inconsequential energetically. Finally, the possible consequence of 'nonadia- batic' pressure profiles on electrostatic interchanges is considered, and a boundary delineating stabilizing and destabilizing regions determined.

High-Frequency Asymptotic Behavior of the Spectral Energy Distribution of Equilibrium Radiation in a Degenerate Electron Plasma

It has been shown that the asymptotic behavior of the spectral energy distribution of equilibrium radiation in a degenerate electron plasma in the range of high frequencies basically differs from the Planck formula in view of the power-law decrease with increasing frequency. In this case, the inclusion of the intrinsic magnetic moment of electrons plays a decisive role.

Influence of Ferromagnetic Carbon Nanotubes on Magnetic Transitions in Liquid Crystals

Magnetic field-induced orientational transitions in suspensions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in nematic liquid crystals have been studied in the framework of a continuum theory. Ferromagnetic CNTs are considered that possess, in addition to a large anisotropy of diamagnetic susceptibility, an additional magnetic moment due to ferromagnetic particles either situated on the CNT surface or encapsulated inside. It is established that, depending on the energy of coupling between disperse CNTs and liquid-crystalline matrix, the external magnetic field induces various sequences of orientational transitions. A threshold value of the coupling energy is determined, above which a transition from the initial homogeneous planar phase to inhomogeneous state (angular phase) becomes possible. At coupling energies below the threshold, the increasing magnetic field induces the following sequence of orientational transitions: homogeneous planar phase–inhomogeneous (angular) phase–homogeneous homeotropic phase–inhomogeneous angular phase. It is established that, depending on the intensity of segregation phenomena, these transitions can be of the first or second order. Analytical expressions for the fields of second-order transitions between phases are found. On an example of the optical phase difference between the ordinary and extraordinary rays of light passing through the cell of CNT suspension, it is shown that the suspension can exhibit optical bistability during the first-order orientational transition.

Heat-Treatment Induced Magnetic Anisotropy of GaMnSb Films

Conditions and mechanisms of controlled variation of the magnetic anisotropy of GaMnSb films containing magnetic MnSb nanoinclusions by means of heat treatment have been determined. For this purpose, the temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the magnetic moments of samples before and after thermal annealing were measured using a SQUID magnetometer. It is established that the heat treatment of GaMnSb films leads to a significant increase in the values of characteristics determined by the magnetic anisotropy, including the growth of blocking temperature (from 95 to 390 K) and the magnetic anisotropy field (from 330 to 630 Oe). Results of transmission electron microscopy investigation indicate that a change in the magnetic anisotropy of GaMnSb films as a result of their thermal annealing can be related to a transition of the crystalline structure of magnetic MnSb nanoinclusions from hexagonal (space group P6{sub 2}/mmc) to cubic (space group F-43m).

Exchange Spring in a Heterostructure with Pd{sub 0.96}Fe{sub 0.04} Low-Temperature Ferromagnet

The exchange bias of the magnetic hysteresis loop and the exchange-spring effect have been observed in thin-film heterostructures comprising layers of Pd{sub 0.96}Fe{sub 0.04} low-temperature ferromagnet, metallic cobalt, and cobalt monoxide (CoO) grown on single-crystalline sapphire by methods of magnetron sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy in an ultrahigh-vacuum system. It is established that the exchange anisotropy of Pd{sub 0.96}Fe{sub 0.04} layer in Pd{sub 0.96}Fe{sub 0.04}/CoO/Co/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} thin-film heterostructure is absent and the exchange-spring effect in this system is not manifested. In the case of a Pd{sub 0.96}Fe{sub 0.04}/Co/CoO/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} structure, it is shown that, according to the results of magnetometric measurements, the inversion of the order of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layers leads to pinning of the magnetic moment of Pd{sub 0.96}Fe{sub 0.04} layer at the interface with cobalt and to realization of the exchange-spring effect. Additional evidence in favor of this interpretation was obtained using the micromagnetic modeling of magnetic hysteresis loops.

Computer Simulation of Energy Parameters and Magnetic Effects in Fe-Si-C Ternary Alloys

The paper presents ab initio simulation with the WIEN2k software package of the equilibrium structure and properties of silicon and carbon atoms dissolved in iron with the body-centered cubic crystal system of the lattice. Silicon and carbon atoms manifest a repulsive interaction in the first two nearest neighbors, in the second neighbor the repulsion being stronger than in the first. In the third and next-nearest neighbors a very weak repulsive interaction occurs and tends to zero with increasing distance between atoms. Silicon and carbon dissolution reduces the magnetic moment of iron atoms.
