Practical Applications and Uses of Solid Lubricant Films

Practical applications are illustrated with discussions covering the reasons for use of solid lubricants, required performance, lubricant selection, and results obtained for the various examples shown. The applications described cover a broad range of solid lubricants. Included are soft lamellar compounds, organic polymers, soft elemental metals, oxides and compounds for high temperature use. The illustrations selected cover a broad range of lubricant application techniques delineating the reasons for the different processing procedures which include bonded films, plasma spraying, sputtering, ion plating and electrodeposition.

A practical adaptive-grid method for complex fluid-flow problems

A practical solution, adaptive-grid method utilizing a tension and torsion spring analogy is proposed for multidimensional fluid flow problems. The tension spring, which connects adjacent grid points to each other, controls grid spacings. The torsion spring, which is attached to each grid node, controls inclinations of coordinate lines and grid skewness. A marching procedure was used that results in a simple tridiagonal system of equations at each coordinate line to determine grid-point distribution. Multidirectional adaptation is achieved by successive applications of one-dimensional adaptation. Examples of applications for axisymmetric afterbody flow fields and two dimensional transonic airfoil flow fields are shown.

Qualification tests and electrical measurements: Practice and problems

As part of the Flat-Plate Solar Array Project, 138 different module designs were subjected to qualification tests. Electrical measurements were subjected on well over a thousand modules representing more than 150 designs. From this experience, conclusions are drawn regarding results and problems, with discussion of the need for change or improvement. The qualification test sequence incuded application of environmental and electrical stresses to the module. With few exceptions, the tests have revealed defects necessitation of environmental and electrical stresses to the module. With few exceptions, the tests have revealed defects necessitating module design or process changes. However, the continued need for these tests may be questioned on the basis of technical and logistical factors. Technically, the current test sequence does not cover all design characteristics, does not include all field conditions and is not known to represent the desired 30-year module life. Logistically, the tests are time-consuming and costly, and there is a lack of, fully qualified independent test organizations. Alternatives to the current test program include simplification based on design specification and site environment, and/or the use of warranties or other commercial practices.

Formulation of a practical algorithm for parameter estimation with process and measurement noise

A new formulation is proposed for the problem of parameter estimation in dynamic systems with both process and measurement noise. The formulation applies to continuous-time state space system models with discrete-time measurements. Previous formulations of this problem encountered several theoretical and practical difficulties which are overcome by the new formulation. The most important element of the new formulation is a reparameterization of the unknown noise covariances. A computer program that implements the new formulation is available.

The uniform asymptotic swallowtail approximation - Practical methods for oscillating integrals with four coalescing saddle points

Methods that can be used in the numerical implementation of the uniform swallowtail approximation are described. An explicit expression for that approximation is presented to the lowest order, showing that there are three problems which must be overcome in practice before the approximation can be applied to any given problem. It is shown that a recently developed quadrature method can be used for the accurate numerical evaluation of the swallowtail canonical integral and its partial derivatives. Isometric plots of these are presented to illustrate some of their properties. The problem of obtaining the arguments of the swallowtail integral from an analytical function of its argument is considered, describing two methods of solving this problem. The asymptotic evaluation of the butterfly canonical integral is addressed.

A practical approach to rotorcraft systems identification

A standard for rotorcraft system identification is proposed to facilitate the exchange of data and technology within the industry. This integrated approach utilizes simulations to validate methodology and flight data to validate simulations. A new technique allowing results obtained from separate maneuvers to be systematically combined is also presented and shown to be a fundamental tool in providing a practical approach to rotorcraft identification. The proposed methodology is evaluated using data generated by nonlinear blade-element simulation of the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft.

Some practical considerations for economical back contact formation on high efficiency solar cells

The back contact can detract from solar cell performance in a number of ways: high recombination, barrier, photovoltaic, minority carrier collection, resistance. These effects may act in a nonuniform fashion over the cell area, and complicate the analysis of photovoltaic performance aimed at a better understanding of the effects of device geometry and material and/or processing parameters. The back contact is tested by reproducing it on both sides of a substrate. The objective is to find a back contact which performs well as a back contact, can be applied cheaply to large area solar cells, fits well into a practical process sequence, does not introduce structural damage or undesirable impurities into the silicon substrate, is compatible with an effective front contact technology, permits low temperature solder contacting, adheres well to silicon, and is reliable.

Practical aspects of using laser holographic interferometry in some NASA Ames wind tunnels are presented. These aspects include the development of techniques for dual-plate interferometry, optics alignment, and laser alignment. In addition, methods to alleviate problems associated with vibration, photographic processing, photographic drying, and photographic reconstruction are discussed.

Practical aspects of photovoltaic technology, applications and cost (revised)

The purpose of this text is to provide the reader with the background, understanding, and computational tools needed to master the practical aspects of photovoltaic (PV) technology, application, and cost. The focus is on stand-alone, silicon solar cell, flat-plate systems in the range of 1 to 25 kWh/day output. Technology topics covered include operation and performance of each of the major system components (e.g., modules, array, battery, regulators, controls, and instrumentation), safety, installation, operation and maintenance, and electrical loads. Application experience and trends are presented. Indices of electrical service performance - reliability, availability, and voltage control - are discussed, and the known service performance of central station electric grid, diesel-generator, and PV stand-alone systems are compared. PV system sizing methods are reviewed and compared, and a procedure for rapid sizing is described and illustrated by the use of several sample cases. The rapid sizing procedure yields an array and battery size that corresponds to a minimum cost system for a given load requirement, insulation condition, and desired level of service performance. PV system capital cost and levelized energy cost are derived as functions of service performance and insulation. Estimates of future trends in PV system costs are made.

Estimates of leaf area index from spectral reflectance of wheat under different cultural practices and solar angle

The influence of management practices and solar illumination angle on the leaf area index (LAI) was estimated from measurements of wheat canopy reflectance evaluated by two methods, a regression formula and an indirect technique. The date of planting and the time of irrigation in relation to the stage of plant growth were found to have significant effects on the development of leaves in spring wheat. A reduction in soil moisture adversely affected both the duration and magnitude of the maximum LAI for late planting dates. In general, water stress during vegetative stages resulted in a reduction in maximum LAI, while water stress during the reproductive period shortened the duration of green LAI in spring wheat. Canopy geometry and solar angle also affected the spectral properties of the canopies, and hence the estimated LAI. Increase in solar zenith angles resulted in a general increase in estimated LAI obtained from both methods.

Practical applications of Landsat data

Some practical applications of Landsat MSS and TM data are discussed, including renewable resource inventory and monitoring; water resources inventory and assessment; and urban land use analysis. Consideration is also given to the geological applications of Landsat MSS and TM data. These applications include: mapping major geological units; rock-type recognition; mapping volcanic surface deposits; and mapping linears. The TM and MSS spectral bands corresponding to the data applications are listed in a table.

Typography and layout of technical reports - Survey of current practices

As part of a review of the NASA Langley Research Center scientific and technical information program, 50 technical reports from industry, research institutions, and government agencies were systematically examined and analyzed to determine current usage and practice in regard to (1) typography, including composition method, type style, type size, and margin treatment; (2) graphic design, including layout and imposition of material on the page; and (3) physical media, including paper, ink, and binding methods. The results indicate that approximately 50 percent of the reports were typeset, 70 percent used Roman (serif) type, 80 percent used 10- or 11-point type for text, 60 percent used a ragged right-hand margin, slightly more than half used paragraph indentation, 75 percent used a single-column layout, 65 percent had one or more figures or tables placed perpendicular to (not aligned with) the text, and perfect binding was the most frequently used binding method.

Practical method for highly accurate large-scale surface calculations

An accurate and efficient film linearized muffin-tin orbital (FLMTO) technique for surface electronic-structure calculations is presented which uses only 60-70 basis functions, as opposed to the 300 functions used in the linear augmented plane-wave method. Calculations for three different (3d and 4d) transition-metal films resulted in high quality results for five-layer slabs of Cu(001), Fe(001), and Ru(001), in addition to good results for the work functions and projected density of states. By retaining the LMTO small basis size, computer time and memory are reduced, making practical the study of systems with a larger number of atoms in the two-dimensional unit cell.

Practical implementation of an accurate method for multilevel design sensitivity analysis

Solution techniques for handling large scale engineering optimization problems are reviewed. Potentials for practical applications as well as their limited capabilities are discussed. A new solution algorithm for design sensitivity is proposed. The algorithm is based upon the multilevel substructuring concept to be coupled with the adjoint method of sensitivity analysis. There are no approximations involved in the present algorithm except the usual approximations introduced due to the discretization of the finite element model. Results from the six- and thirty-bar planar truss problems show that the proposed multilevel scheme for sensitivity analysis is more effective (in terms of computer incore memory and the total CPU time) than a conventional (one level) scheme even on small problems. The new algorithm is expected to perform better for larger problems and its applications on the new generation of computer hardwares with 'parallel processing' capability is very promising.

Practical aspects of achieving accurate radiometric field measurements

This paper provides practical advice for investigators new to the field of high accuracy radiometric experiments. Sources typically used for calibrating land reflectance measurement instruments are identified, and some special considerations for their use are highlighted. The physical nature of the processes determining the output of these sources is emphasized, and an estimate of the typical calibration accuracies achieved with these sources is described. Several techniques for the validation and verification of instrument characterization are reviewed. Experiment design of the Backscattered Ultraviolet Spectrometer (BUV) and the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) are introduced as successful mission designs for accomplishing high accuracy radiation measurements from space. The goal of this paper is to introduce reasoning developed in other missions to experiments devoted to sensing the earth's surface and near surface.

[NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Paper 4:] Technical communications in aerospace: An analysis of the practices reported by US and European aerospace engineers and scientists

Two pilot studies were conducted that investigated the technical communications practices of U.S. and European aerospace engineers and scientists. Both studies had the same five objectives: (1) solicit opinions regarding the importance of technical communications; (2) determine the use and production of technical communications; (3) seek views about the appropriate content of an undergraduate course in technical communications; (4) determine use of libraries, information centers, and online database; (5) determine use and importance of computer and information technology to them. A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to randomly selected aerospace engineers and scientists, with a slightly modified version sent to European colleagues. Their responses to selected questions are presented in this paper.
