NSEG: A segmented mission analysis program for low and high speed aircraft. Volume 3: Demonstration problems

Program NSEG is a rapid mission analysis code based on the use of approximate flight path equations of motion. Equation form varies with the segment type, for example, accelerations, climbs, cruises, descents, and decelerations. Realistic and detailed vehicle characteristics are specified in tabular form. In addition to its mission performance calculation capabilities, the code also contains extensive flight envelope performance mapping capabilities. For example, rate-of-climb, turn rates, and energy maneuverability parameter values may be mapped in the Mach-altitude plane. Approximate take off and landing analyses are also performed. At high speeds, centrifugal lift effects are accounted for. Extensive turbojet and ramjet engine scaling procedures are incorporated in the code.

Methods for segment wheat area estimation

The major research conducted during the three years of LACIE to solve problems associated with segment wheat area estimation is reviewed. Topics covered include proportion estimation, clustering, feature extraction, and signature extension. It would appear that LANDSAT-1 and LANDSAT-2 data do not contain enough information to discriminate between crop types perfectly all the time and, therefore, a basic problem arises when no ground truth data on crop types in the area are available. New approaches are needed to reduce labeling error. Perhaps better use of multiyear LANDSAT data, a more detailed understanding of the cropping practices in the area, better crop calendar prediction, and a better understanding of the limiting sources of error in LANDSAT data related to crop discrimination may provide the insight required to develop improved designs.

Users manual for the US baseline corn and soybean segment classification procedure

A user's manual for the classification component of the FY-81 U.S. Corn and Soybean Pilot Experiment in the Foreign Commodity Production Forecasting Project of AgRISTARS is presented. This experiment is one of several major experiments in AgRISTARS designed to measure and advance the remote sensing technologies for cropland inventory. The classification procedure discussed is designed to produce segment proportion estimates for corn and soybeans in the U.S. Corn Belt (Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois) using LANDSAT data. The estimates are produced by an integrated Analyst/Machine procedure. The Analyst selects acquisitions, participates in stratification, and assigns crop labels to selected samples. In concert with the Analyst, the machine digitally preprocesses LANDSAT data to remove external effects, stratifies the data into field like units and into spectrally similar groups, statistically samples the data for Analyst labeling, and combines the labeled samples into a final estimate.

Rapid solution casting under vacuum of very thick sheets of a segmented polyurethane elastomer

A technique has been developed for rapidly casting from solution under vacuum smooth, bubble-free, clear-white and uniformly thick (about 0.20 cm) sheets of a segmented polyurethane elastomer. The casting is carried out from dimethylformamide solutions inside temperature-controlled air-circulated ovens in order to minimize the establishment of thermal gradients throughout the casting solution. The technique produces quality sheets in 9 days, compared with 40-45 days for an inferior film produced in open pans.

Extensions to analysis of ignition transients of segmented rocket motors

The analytical procedures described in NASA CR-150162 were extended for the purpose of analyzing the data from the first static test of the Solid Rocket Booster for the Space Shuttle. The component of thrust associated with the rapid changes in the internal flow field was calculated. This dynamic thrust component was shown to be prominent during flame spreading. An approach was implemented to account for the close coupling between the igniter and head end segment of the booster. The tips of the star points were ignited first, followed by radial and longitudinal flame spreading.

Core segment 15008 - Regolith stratigraphy at Apennine Front Station 2 using multispectral imaging

High precision multispectral images for Apennine Front core segment 15008 are presented. These data have a spatial resolution less than approximately 0.5 mm and are analyzed for their compositional information using image analysis techniques. The stratigraphy of the regolith sampled by 15008 is documented here as three distinct zones, the most prominent of which is a feldspathic fragment-rich zone with a chaotic fabric that occurs between 10 and 18 cm depth. It is suggested that this material is the primary rim crest deposit of the local 10 m crater. Above this zone the stratigraphy is more horizontal in nature. Below this zone the soil is observed to be relatively homogeneous with no distinctive structure to 23 cm depth.

LANDSAT-D ground segment operations plan, revision A

The basic concept for the utilization of LANDSAT ground processing resources is described. Only the steady state activities that support normal ground processing are addressed. This ground segment operations plan covers all processing of the multispectral scanner and the processing of thematic mapper through data acquisition and payload correction data generation for the LANDSAT 4 mission. The capabilities embedded in the hardware and software elements are presented from an operations viewpoint. The personnel assignments associated with each functional process and the mechanisms available for controlling the overall data flow are identified.

Graphite/Larc-160 technology demonstration segment test results

A structural test program was conducted on a Celion/LARC-160 graphite/polyimide technology demonstration segment (TDS) to verify the technology. The 137 x 152 cm (54 x 60 in.) TDS simulates a full-scale section of the orbiter composite body flap design incorporating three ribs and extending from the forward cove back to the rear spar. The TDS was successfully subjected to mechanical loads and thermal environments (-170 to 316 C) simulating 100 shuttle orbiter missions. Successful completion of the test program verified the design, analysis, and fabrication methodology for bonded Gr/PI honeycomb sandwich structure and demonstration that Gr/PI composite technology readiness is established.

Sound propagation in segmented exhaust ducts - Theoretical predictions and comparison with measurements

Suppressions due to acoustic treatment in the annular exhaust duct of a model fan have been theoretically predicted and compared with measurements. The predictions are based on the modal analysis of sound propagation in a straight annular flow duct with segmented treatment. Measured values of the mode distribution of the fan noise source (fan-stator interaction source only) and the acoustic impedance of the treatment in the duct were used as input to the prediction program. The predicted suppressions (under the assumption of uniform flow in the duct) compared well with the measured in-duct suppression for all test conditions. The measurements were made in an anechoic chamber and the interaction modes generated in the fan spanned a cut-off ratio range from nearly one to seven.

Segmented testing

The fraction of faults detected for a digital network is frequently high for the first few input combinations applied out of a set of test vectors. When the particular ordering of test patterns does not appreciably change the shape of the coverage curve, there appears to be an advantage to splitting the test into segments which are applied at different times. It is shown that the expected time to error detection and the probability of an undetected double error can be reduced. The amount of reduction is dependent on the shape of the fault coverage curve. It is conjectured that such a reduction can be obtained for VLSI networks.

Water impact test of aft skirt end ring, and mid ring segments of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster

The results of water impact loads tests using aft skirt end ring, and mid ring segments of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) are examined. Dynamic structural response data is developed and an evaluation of the model in various configurations is presented. Impact velocities are determined for the SRB with the larger main chute system. Various failure modes are also investigated.

Occultation detection of a Neptune ring segment

A stellar occulation event of Neptune revealed a ring segment that was previously undetected. It appears that the object is not a complete ring, but rather a localized swarm of particles which follows a ring orbit over a limited range of longitudes. To avoid confusion with the standard use of the word ring it is suggested that the feature be called an arc. The distance of the arc zone is not precisely known because so far there has been no confirmed occultation by both an arc and the planet.
