Validity of standard model EFT studies of V H and V V production at NLO
The production of $W^±H, ZH, W^+W^-$, and $W^±Z$ pairs probes non-Standard-Model interactions of quarks, gauge bosons, and the Higgs boson. New effects can be parameterized in terms of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Lagrangian is expanded in terms of higher-dimension operators suppressed by increasing powers of a high scale Λ. We examine the importance of including next-to-leading-order QCD corrections in global fits to the coefficients of the EFT. The numerical implications on the fits due to different approaches to enforcing the validity of the EFT are quantified. We pay particular attention to the dependence of the fits on the ex-pansion in 1/Λ 2 since the differences between results calculated at $\mathcal{O}$(1/Λ 2 ) and $\mathcal{O}$(1/Λ 4 ) may give insight into the possible significance of dimension-8 effects.
Direct CP violation and the ΔI=1/2 rule in K→ππ decay from the standard model
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the Δ I = 1 / 2 , K → π π decay amplitude A 0 and ϵ ' , the measure of direct C P violation in K → π π decay, improving our 2015 calculation [1] of these quantities. Both calculations were performed with physical kinematics on a 32 3 × 64 lattice with an inverse lattice spacing of a - 1 = 1.3784 ( 68 ) GeV . However, the current calculation includes nearly 4 times the statistics and numerous technical improvements allowing us to more reliably isolate the π π ground state and more accurately relate the lattice operators to those defined in the standard model. We find Re ( A 0 ) = 2.99 ( 0.32 ) ( 0.59 ) × 10 - 7 GeV and Im ( A 0 ) = - 6.98 ( 0.62 ) ( 1.44 ) × 10 - 11 GeV , where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The former agrees well with the experimental result Re ( A 0 ) = 3.3201 ( 18 ) × 10 - 7 GeV . These results for A 0 can be combined with our earlier lattice calculation of A 2 [2] to obtain Re ( ϵ ' / ϵ ) = 21.7 ( 2.6 ) ( 6.2 ) ( 5.0 ) × 10 - 4 , where the third error represents omitted isospin breaking effects, and Re ( A 0 ) / Re ( A 2 ) = 19.9 ( 2.3 ) ( 4.4 ) . The first agrees well with the experimental result of Re ( ϵ ' / ϵ ) = 16.6 ( 2.3 ) × 10 - 4 . A comparison of the second with the observed ratio Re ( A 0 ) / Re ( A 2 ) = 22.45 ( 6 ) , demonstrates the standard model origin of this “ Δ I = 1 / 2 rule” enhancement.

Two-neutrino double-𝛽 decay in pionless effective field theory from a Euclidean finite-volume correlation function
Two-neutrino double-β decay of certain nuclear isotopes is one of the rarest Standard Model processes observed in nature. Its neutrinoless counterpart is an exotic lepton-number nonconserving process that is widely searched to determine if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions. In order to connect the rate of these processes to the Standard Model and beyond the Standard Model interactions, it is essential that the corresponding nuclear matrix elements are constrained reliably from theory. Lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) and low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) are expected to play an essential role in constraining the matrix element of the two-nucleon subprocess, which could in turn provide the input into ab initio nuclear-structure calculations in larger isotopes. Focusing on the two-neutrino process $nn\rightarrow pp(ee\bar{v}_{e}\bar{v}_e)$, the amplitude is constructed in this work in pionless EFT at next-to-leading order, demonstrating the emergence of a renormalization-scale independent amplitude and the absence of any new low-energy constant at this order beyond those present in the single-weak process. Most importantly, it is shown how a LQCD four-point correlation function in Euclidean and finite-volume spacetime can be used to constrain the Minkowski infinite-volume amplitude in the EFT. The same formalism is provided for the related single-weak process, which is an input to the double-β decay formalism. The LQCD-EFT matching procedure outlined for the double-weak amplitude paves the road toward constraining the two-nucleon matrix element entering the neutrinoless double-β decay amplitude with a light Majorana neutrino.

Backgrounds in gravitational effective field theory
Effective field theories describing gravity coupled to matter are investigated, allowing for operators of arbitrary mass dimension. Terms violating local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance while preserving internal gauge symmetries are included. The theoretical framework for violations of local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance and associated conceptual issues are discussed, including transformations in curved and approximately flat spacetimes, the treatment of various types of backgrounds, the implications of symmetry breaking, and the no-go constraints for explicit violation in Riemann geometry. Furthermore, techniques are presented for the construction of effective operators, and the possible terms in the gravity, gauge, fermion, and scalar sectors are classified and enumerated. Explicit expressions are obtained for terms containing operators of mass dimension six or less in the effective action for General Relativity coupled to the Standard Model of particle physics. Special cases considered include Einstein-Maxwell effective field theories and the limit with only scalar coupling constants.
