IMS software developments for the detection of chemical warfare agent

Interference compounds like gasoline, diesel, burning wood or fuel, etc. are presented in common battlefield situations. These compounds can cause detectors to respond as a false positive or interfere with the detector's ability to respond to target compounds such as chemical warfare agents. To ensure proper response of the ion mobility spectrometer to chemical warfare agents, two special software packages were developed and incorporated into the Bruker RAID-1. The programs suppress interferring signals caused by car exhaust or smoke gases resulting from burning materials and correct the influence of variable sample gas humidity which is important for detection and quantification of blister agents like mustard gas or lewisite.

GASCan 2 payload integration

This project, conducted in cooperation with the NASA Advanced Space Design Program, is part of an ongoing effort to place an experiment package into space. The goal of this project is to build and test flight-ready hardware that can be launched from the Space Shuttle. Get Away Special Canister 2 (GASCan 2) consists of three separate experiments. The Ionospheric Properties and Propagation Experiment (IPPE) determines effects of the ionosphere on radio wave propagation. The Microgravity Ignition experiment (MGI) tests the effects of combustion in a microgravity environment. The Rotational Fluid Flow experiment (RFF) examines fluid behavior under varying levels of gravity. This year the following tasks were completed: design of the IPPE antenna, X- and J-cell battery boxes, J-cell battery box enclosure, and structural bumpers; construction of the MGI canisters, MGI mounting brackets, IPPE antenna, and battery boxes; and the selection of the RFF's operating fluid and the analysis of the fluid behavior under microgravity test conditions.

C Namelist Facility

C Namelist Facility (CNL) is a package of software that supports the development of data-driven programs that utilize relatively free-form input files (e.g., text files) to control complex operations. The only comparable prior namelist facility is built into Fortran and does not support arrays or records. Newer computing languages, including C and Pascal, do not include built-in namelist facilities. A namelist facility enables a program to utilize relatively free-form input files that contain assignment statements that give values to variables. Variables to which values are not assigned in input files remain unchanged; therefore, it becomes possible to have default values set by static or dynamic initialization of values prior to namelist input and updating of values is optional. Because it is not required to include values of variables in namelist input files, new parameters can be added to evolving programs without rendering old namelist input files obsolete -- provided that the new parameters have useful default values. It should be possible to execute CNL in any operating system that supports the ANSI C programming language. It has been executed in several variants of Unix and in VxWorks.

Evaluation of Present and Future Spaceborne Lightning Observations During the ALOFT Campaign

The ALOFT1 campaign took place during July 2023. The NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft was based in Tampa, Florida, and flew approximately 60 hours sampling tropical and sub-tropical thunderstorms that were mostly contained within the common fields of view of GLM4-16 and GLM-18. In addition, multiple underflights of the ISS LIS5 instrument occurred. The FEGS2 and LIP6 instrument suite on the ER-2 provided a combination of multispectral optical, slow and fast electric field change, and three-dimensional electric field measurements of lightning and thunderstorms. Notably, in addition to the 777-nm band used by GLM and LIS, FEGS also observed at 337 nm, 500 nm, 868 nm, wideband visible-to-infrared, and shortwave infrared. A spectrometer that spanned most major lightning bands from the ultraviolet to infrared was included. Observations of gamma-ray production by thunderstorms were also collected during ALOFT. Thus, the lightning-observing suite on the ER-2 during ALOFT provides an unprecedented suborbital dataset for direct optical-to-optical and indirect radio-to-optical validation of existing spaceborne lightning sensors like GLM and LIS. In addition, the multispectral observations from FEGS enables evaluation of current and future spaceborne lightning-observing concepts. For example, the 337-nm channel is relevant to both existing missions like ASIM7 as well as future concepts like the CubeSpark mission currently being formulated by NASA. Complementary to LIS, the ISS also carries the STP-H88 payload, which features microwave radiometers covering 18-182 GHz, while the ER-2 carried radiometers covering 10-684 GHz, enabling evaluation of spaceborne passive microwave measurements that are complementary to the lightning observations. 1. EAGLEView: A surface and grid generation program and its data management

An old and proven grid generation code, the EAGLE grid generation package, is given an added dimension of a graphical interface and a real time data base manager. The Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Panel Library is used for the graphical user interface. Through the panels, EAGLEView constructs the EAGLE script command and sends it to EAGLE to be processed. After the object is created, the script is saved in a mini-buffer which can be edited and/or saved and reinterpreted. The graphical objects are set-up in a linked-list and can be selected or queried by pointing and clicking the mouse. The added graphical enhancement to the EAGLE system emphasizes the unique capability to construct field points around complex geometry and visualize the construction every step of the way.

Electronics for a focal plane crystal spectrometer

The HEAO-B program forced the usual constraints upon the spacecraft experiment electronics: high reliability, low power consumption, and tight packaging at reasonable cost. The programmable high voltage power supplies were unique in both application and simplicity of manufacture. The hybridized measurement chain is a modification of that used on the SAS-C program; the charge amplifier design in particular shows definite improvement in performance over previous work.

Micromechanics Analysis Code Post-Processing (MACPOST) User Guide

As advanced composite materials have gained wider usage. the need for analytical models and computer codes to predict the thermomechanical deformation response of these materials has increased significantly. Recently, a micromechanics technique called the generalized method of cells (GMC) has been developed, which has the capability to fulfill this -oal. Tc provide a framework for GMC, the Micromechanics Analysis Code with Generalized Method of Cells (MAC/GMC) has been developed. As MAC/GMC has been updated, significant improvements have been made to the post-processing capabilities of the code. Through the MACPOST program, which operates directly within the MSC/PATRAN graphical pre- and post-processing package, a direct link between the analysis capabilities of MAC/GMC and the post-processing capabilities of MSC/PATRAN has been established. MACPOST has simplified the production, printing. and exportation of results for unit cells analyzed by MAC/GMC. MACPOST allows different micro-level quantities to be plotted quickly and easily in contour plots. In addition, meaningful data for X-Y plots can be examined. MACPOST thus serves as an important analysis and visualization tool for the macro- and micro-level data generated by MAC/GMC. This report serves as the user's manual for the MACPOST program.

Transition Report for Dr. Ken Fernandez, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center

The primary objective proposed during my tenure with the NASA Administrator's Fellowship Program (NAFP) was the use of ROBOSIM, a NASA developed robot simulation software package, to introduce the first robotics class to the School of Engineering at Alabama A&M University. The students participating in the spring of 2004 chose as their class project a simulation of the Shuttle, the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, and the inspection boom which may be used to inspect the Shuttle's tiles on-orbit. In addition to meeting this primary objective and fulfilling other activities that were required by NAFP participants, several other accomplishments are reported. Participation with the faculty of Alabama A&M in the planning and execution of the First and Second Annual Michael P. Anderson Memorial Summer Programs for minority high school students was completed. This program, funded by NASA, provided supervised "hands- on" group activities in various engineering disciplines, including robotics. A third major accomplishment during the NAFP tenure was the granting of a U.S. patent for the NASA 3-D Luggage Scanning System. International patents are also pending on this device. The device uses stereographic imaging similar to that used by NASA on the Mars Rover to enhance the contents of luggage and other items being inspected. It is believed that this device can greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of security checkpoint screening.

Stellar and Binary Evolution in Star Clusters

This paper presents a final report on research activities covered on Stellar and Binary Evolution in Star Clusters. Substantial progress was made in the development and dissemination of the "Starlab" software environment. Significant improvements were made to "kira," an N-body simulation program tailored to the study of dense stellar systems such as star clusters and galactic nuclei. Key advances include (1) the inclusion of stellar and binary evolution in a self-consistent manner, (2) proper treatment of the anisotropic Galactic tidal field, (3) numerous technical enhancements in the treatment of binary dynamics and interactions, and (4) full support for the special-purpose GRAPE-4 hardware, boosting the program's performance by a factor of 10-100 over the accelerated version. The data-reduction and analysis tools in Starlab were also substantially expanded. A Starlab Web site (http://www.sns.ias.edu/-starlab) was created and developed. The site contains detailed information on the structure and function of the various tools that comprise the package, as well as download information, "how to" tips and examples of common operations, demonstration programs, animations, etc. All versions of the software are freely distributed to all interested users, along with detailed installation instructions.

Launch packaging options for the photovoltaic power module cargo element

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration recently embarked on the Space Station Freedom program, which will utilize the Shuttle Orbiter for transportation to orbit. This task will be accomplished with a number of flights over several years. Each flight is unique in terms of the hardware that is manifested and the method by which it is integrated to form viable cargo elements. Work Package 4 is responsible for the electric power system for Space Station Freedom, and was delegated the authority to develop a photovoltaic (PV) power module cargo element. The PV power module consists of several unique assemblies. The first of these is the combined solar array/beta gimbal assembly. The remaining assemblies form the single combined integrated equipment assembly for each PV power module. These three combined assemblies are packaged into a launch cradle to form the PV power module cargo element, which is placed in the cargo bay of the Shuttle Orbiter for transportation to orbit. Various constraints determine the packaging options for the three PV power module combined assemblies. The size and shape of the combined assemblies in relation to the Shuttle Orbiter cargo bay dimensions and other manifested hardware are ultimately a factor in determining the acceptable packaging schemes for the PV power module cargo element. Several packaging options for the PV power module cargo element are presented. These options are discussed in terms of their impact on the overall flight hardware manifest as determined by the various constraints.

ALLMAG, GDALMG, LINTRA: Computer programs for geomagnetic field and field-line calculations

A set of computer programs has been developed for the calculation of the geomagnetic field and the tracing of field lines in space. The basic subroutine, geocentric ALLMAG, contains coefficients for seven recently-published field models as built-in data statements. At execution time the user can vary the model and/or the time period by simply changing input parameters. Subroutine GDALMG is adapted for input and output in geodetic coordinates. ALLMAG and GDALMG are equivalent to Cain's FIELD and FIELDG, with the added flexibility of the choice of seven models. LINTRA traces field lines from any point in space to a specified altitude intersect in the same or opposite hemisphere, using any of the models contained in ALLMAG. Input is in either geocentric or geodetic coordinates, and output is returned in both. McIlwain's INVAR package, which calculates B and L, has been adapted to use ALLMAG. All programs are described in detail, and sample calculations are given.
