The equilibrium constant for N2O5 = NO2 + NO3 - Absolute determination by direct measurement from 243 to 397 K

Direct determinations of the equilibrium constant for the reaction N2O5 = NO2 + NO3 were carried out by measuring NO2, NO3, and N2O5 using long-path visible and infrared absorption spectroscopy as a function of temperature from 243 to 397 K. The first-order decay rate constant of N2O5 was experimentally measured as a function of temperature. These results are in turn used to derive a value for the rate coefficient for the NO-forming channel in the reaction of NO3 with NO2. The implications of the results for atmospheric chemistry, the thermodynamics of NO3, and for laboratory kinetics studies are discussed.

Transient conduction-radiation analysis of an absolute active cavity radiometer using finite elements

A NASA-developed finite element-based model of a generic active cavity radiometer (ACR) has been developed in order to study the dependence on operating temperature of the closed-loop and open-loop transient response of the instrument. Transient conduction within the sensing element is explored, and the transient temperature distribution resulting from the application of a time-varying radiative boundary condition is calculated. The results verify the prediction that operation of an ACR at cryogenic temperatures results in large gains in frequency response.

Absolute gain measurement of microstrip antennas under mismatched conditions

The gain of a single microstrip patch and a two-layer parasitic array is measured using the image method under mismatched conditions. This method produces accurate results, even in the case of low-gain microstrip antennas. The advantages of this method over the gain comparison technique are discussed.

The absolute radiometric calibration of the advanced very high resolution radiometer

The measurement conditions are described for an intensive field campaign at White Sands Missile Range for the calibration of the AVHRRs on NOAA-9, NOAA-10 and NOAA-11, LANDSAT-4 TM and SPOT. Three different methods for calibration of AVHRRs by reference to a ground surface site are reported, and results from these methods are compared. Significant degradations in NOAA-9 and NOAA-10 AVHRR responsivities occurred since prelaunch calibrations were completed. As of February 1988, degradations in NOAA-9 AVHRR responsivities were on the order of 37 percent in channel and 41 percent in channel 2, and for the NOAA-10 AVHRR these degradations were 42 and 59 percent in channels 1 and 2, respectively.

The determination of absolute ro-vibrational intensities for radical diatomic molecules

Ro-vibrational transition intensities of radical and/or chemically reactive molecular species are difficult to determine. A number of methods which might be used to provide information on matrix elements of the electric dipole moment function and the construction of the dipole moment function from the information these methods provide are discussed. The derived dipole moment function represents an optimum choice and allows a calculation (with estimable errors) of the line intensities for a large number of ro-vibrational transitions.

Absolute infrared band strength measurement of the ClO radical by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

High-resolution (0.005/cm) FTIR spectra of the X2Pi(i)-X2Pi(i) (1-0) rovibrational bands of (C-35)(O-16) and (Cl-37)(O-16) were obtained in 1 torr of helium carrier gas. After measuring the strengths of approximately 830 individual IR lines from several spectra, a total band strength of 13.1 + or - 1.1/sq cm atm and a first Herman-Wallis coefficient of (4.12 + or - 0.62) x 10 to the -3rd were determined.

Wavelength division multiplexed fiber optic absolute position encoder

A wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) method for fiber optic sensors is proposed which uses a broadband light source and narrow bandpass thin film optical filter coatings on cylindrical graded index lenses. In the WDM system described here, all bits are multiplexed onto a single signal return fiber by assigning each bit a unique wavelength. A multielement photodetector array is used as the encoded position information is in parallel. Preliminary prototype test results are presented.

The effect of background galaxy contamination on the absolute magnitude and light curve speed class of type Ia supernovae

Observational data are presented in support of the hypothesis that background galaxy contamination is present in the photometric data of Ia supernovae and that this effect can account for the observed dispersion in the light curve speeds of most of Ia supernovae. The implication is that the observed dispersion in beta is artificial and that most of Ia supernovae have nearly homogeneous light curves. The result supports the notion that Ia supernovae are good standard candles.

Determination of absolute strengths of N2 quadrupole lines from high-resolution ground-based IR solar observations

The strength of S-branch lines of the N2 (1-0) electric quadrupole vibration-rotation band are determined by an analysis of solar absorption spectra. The solar data were recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer and are characterized by high resolution, and a high signal-to-noise ratio. By extrapolating equivalent width measurements of the lines from varying air masses to zero air mass, the line strengths are found for the transitions from S7 to S10. The results presented do not include half widths and are found to be accurate to within 5 percent, and following a redetermination the N2 transitions are accurate to within 0.0002/cm. Line-of-sight atmospheric air masses associated with remotely sensed IR spectroscopic observations can be determined directly by utilizing the highly accurate data.

A new solar irradiance calibration from 3295 A to 8500 A derived from absolute spectrophotometry of Vega

By imaging sunlight diffracted by 20- and 30-micron diameter pinholes onto the entrance aperture of a photoelectric grating scanner, the solar spectral irradiance was determined relative to the spectrophotometric standard star Vega, observed at night with the same instrument. Solar irradiances are tabulated at 4 A increments from 3295 A to 8500 A. Over most of the visible spectrum, the internal error of measurement is less than 2 percent. This calibration is compared with earlier irradiance measurements by Neckel and Labs (1984) and by Arvesen et al. (1969) and with the high-resolution solar atlas by Kurucz et al. The three calibrations agree well in visible light but differ by as much as 10 percent in the ultraviolet.

Absolute Doppler shift calibration of laser induced fluorescence signals using optogalvanic measurements in a hollow cathode lamp

The paper investigates the use of optogalvanic (OG) measurements on the neutral 3P1 and 3P2 levels of argon in a hollow cathode lamp for the purpose of calibrating Doppler shifts of laser-induced fluorescence signals from an arcjet plume. It is shown that, even with non-Doppler-free OG detection, accuracy to better than 10 MHz is possible but that, depending on the experiment geometry, corrections of 10-35 MHz may be necessary to offset small axial drift velocities of neutral atoms in the hollow cathode lamp.

Absolute redshifts in the CIV 1548 A line in the transition region of the quiet sun

Observations with the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter instrument on the SMM spacecraft were made at the polar limb and disk center for the accurate determination of Doppler shifts of the CIV 1548 A emission line formed at 10 exp -5 K in the transition region of the quiet sun. Individual data points representing 3 arcsec square pixels yield both redshifts and blueshifts, but the mean values from four different days of observations are toward the red. The mean redshifts are in the range 4-8 km/s and are produced by nearly vertically directed flows; the uncertainty associated with the mean values corresponds to +/- 0.5 km/s. The redshift increases with brightness of the CIV line.

On the absolute abundance of calcium in solar flares

The abundance of calcium relative to hydrogen in soft X-ray-emitting solar flare plasmas is determined. Results were obtained for 25 flares. An average calcium-to-hydrogen abundance of about 5 x 10 exp -6, which is about a factor of 2 greater than measured for the photosphere, is found. This result is consistent with an enhancement of low first ionization elements in soft X-ray flare plasmas. For one flare, the calcium abundance was higher, at about 1.6 times the average results. It is inferred that the calcium abundance can vary among flares. Significant variations of the calcium abundance during the course of a flare were not detected.

Absolute far-field displacements from the 28 June 1992 Landers earthquake sequence

Displacements observed for the Landers earthquake indicate that the depth of the bottom of the rupture is shallower towards the northern end. Displacements were dominantly symmetric and the rupture extended farther south on the Johnson Valley fault than has been mapped on the basis of surface ground offsets. The combined geodetic moment for the Landers and Big Bear earthquakes agrees well with teleseismic estimates.

Transition frequencies and absolute strengths of H2 O-17 and H2 O-18 in the 6.2-micron region

High-resolution spectra of oxygen-enriched samples of water vapor were recorded with a Fourier-transform spectrometer covering transitions in the (010)-(000) bands. The measured line frequencies were used along with measurements taken from studies at microwave and far-infrared frequencies to obtain rotational energy levels in the (000) and (010) states of H2 O-17 and H2 O-18. Measurements of the line strengths were fitted to a model in which as many as 18 transition moment parameters were determined. The results produced computed line-strength values that are in excellent agreement with the 623 H2 O-17 experimental transition strengths and 696 H2 O-18 values. These results provide a more accurate representation of the line positions and strengths for the (010)-(000) bands of H2 O-17 and H2 O-18 than those previously available.

A measurement of the absolute energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays during the 1976-77 solar minimum

An instrument designed to measure elemental cosmic ray abundances from boron to nickel in the energy region 0.5-2.0 GeV/nucl was flown on a high altitude balloon from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on 30 September through 1 October 1976 at an average atmospheric depth of about 5 g/sq cm. Differential energy spectra of B, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe, extrapolated to the top of the atmosphere, were measured. The float altitude exposure of 17 h ended near Alpena, Michigan. The flight trajectory maintained a north easterly heading out of Sioux Falls traversing the upper midwest region between 84 and 97 deg west longitude while remaining between 43.5 and 45 deg north latitude. The maximum vertical cut-off for this flight path was 1.77 GV or 0.35 GeV/nucl.
