On electromagnetic field problems in inhomogeneous media

Analysis of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous media is of practical interest in general scattering and propagation problems and in the study of lenses. For certain types of inhomogeneities, the fields may be represented in terms of two scalars. In a general orthogonal coordinate system, these potentials satisfy second order differential equations. Exact solutions of these equations are known only for a few particular cases and in general, an approximate or numerical technique must be employed. The present work reviews and generalizes some of the main methods of attack of the problem. The results are presented in a form appropriate for numerical computation.

A multichannel electromagnetic flowmeter telemetry system.

An eight-channel biomedical telemetry system provides four channels of blood flow measurements in addition to blood-pressure and EKG data. Emphasis is placed on the amplifiers and signal conditioning circuitry required for interfacing of the electromagnetic flow transducers with the transmission and modulation subsystems. The large number of data channels permits measurement of flow distribution as well as total cardiac output. The batteries and electronics for four channels (blood flow) weigh about 500 g and have a volume of 250 cu cm.

Search for magnetic monopoles in lunar material using an electromagnetic detector.

Our search for magnetic monopoles in lunar materials has been concluded with the exploration of an additional 11.5 kg of material returned by the Apollo 11, 12, and 14 missions, using a modified version of our electromagnetic detector. Again, no magnetic monopole was detected. Combining these results with the results of our previous experiment, we set an upper limit of .00017 monopoles/g for the density of isolated monopoles in the lunar surface and improve our upper limits set for the monopole flux in cosmic rays and for monopole pair-production cross section.

Steady-state solutions for relativistically strong electromagnetic waves in plasmas.

New steady-state solutions are derived which describe electromagnetic waves strong enough to make plasma ions and electrons relativistic. A two-fluid model is used throughout. The following solutions are studied: (1) linearly polarized waves with phase velocity much greater than c; (2) arbitrarily polarized waves with phase velocity near c, in a cold uniform plasma; (3) circularly polarized waves in a uniform plasma characterized by a scalar pressure tensor. All of these waves are capable of propagating in normally overdense plasmas, due to nonlinearities introduced by relativistic effects. The propagation of relativistically strong waves in a density gradient is examined, for the example of a circularly polarized wave strong enough to make electrons but not ions relativistic. It is shown that such a wave propagates at constant energy flux despite the nonlinearity of the system.

Nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities.

The problem of propagation of finite-amplitude electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities is studied. Using a recently developed perturbation technique, a general equation for finite amplitude coherent waves is derived. Included in this equation are both the effects of quasi-harmonic nonlinear heating of electrons and random scattering by irregularities. The equation is solved in general by the equivalent linearization procedure. The amplitude of the coherent wave is found to be attenuated by collision and scattering. Both attenuation are affected by the nonlinear heating of the electrons. Curves showing the results for a specific example will be presented.

Development of a mercury electromagnetic centrifugal pump for the SNAP-8 refractory boiler development program

An electromagnetic pump, in which pressure is developed in mercury because of the interaction of the magnetic field and current which flows as a result of the voltage induced in the mercury contained in the pump duct, was developed for the SNAP-8 refractory boiler test facility. Pump performance results are presented for ten duct configurations and two stator sizes. These test results were used to design and fabricate a pump which met the SNAP-8 criteria of 530 psi developed pressure at 12,500 lb/hr. The pump operated continuously for over 13,000 hours without failure or performance degradation. Included in this report are descriptions of the experimental equipment, measurement techniques, all experimental data, and an analysis of the electrical losses in the pump.

Electromagnetic flow rate meter

A liquid metal, whose flow rate is to be determined, is directed through a chamber made of electrically-insulating material on which there is impressed a magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of flow of the liquid metal. The magnetic field is made to increase in strength in a downstream direction of the flow of liquid metal. At least a pair of electrodes are disposed in the chamber traversely and perpendicular to the direction of flow and an ammeter is connected between the electrodes. Electrodes may be disposed in the top or the bottom of the chamber and each may be segmented. Oppositely disposed electrodes may be used with at least one dividing wall extending from each electrode to cause reversal of the direction of flow of the liquid metal. The magnetic field may be provided by electromagnets or permanent magnets such as shaded pole permanent magnets.

Ordinary electromagnetic mode instability

The instability of the ordinary electromagnetic mode propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field is studied for a single-species plasma with ring velocity distribution. The marginal instability boundaries for both the purely growing mode and the propagating growing modes are calculated from the instability criteria. The dispersion characteristics for various sets of plasma parameters are also given. The typical growth rates are of the order of the cyclotron frequency.

Feasibility study of a swept frequency electromagnetic probe (SWEEP) using inductive coupling for the determination of subsurface conductivity of the earth and water prospecting in arid regions

Techniques developed for electromagnetic probing of the lunar interior, and techniques developed for the generation of high power audio frequencies were combined to make practical a magnetic inductive coupling system for the rapid measurement of ground conductivity profiles which are helpful when prospecting for the presence and quality of subsurface water. A system which involves the measurement of the direction, intensity, and time phase of the magnetic field observed near the surface of the earth at a distance from a horizontal coil energized so as to create a field that penetrates the earth was designed and studied to deduce the conductivity and stratification of the subsurface. Theoretical studies and a rudimentary experiment in an arid region showed that the approach is conceptually valid and that this geophysical prospecting technique can be developed for the economical exploration of subterranean water resources.

Electromagnetic interference onboard an electrically propelled spacecraft

Electric and magnetic interference generated by a power conditioner and ion thruster were measured at JPL. Test results were judged by comparing the measured levels to the levels defined by the solar electric propulsion (SEP) specification that was derived from the existing mission oriented Viking-Orbiter 1975 and Mariner-Jupiter-Saturn 1977 electromagnetic compatibility specifications. In many areas the measured interference was excessive. In some cases, the cause of interference was identified. It was concluded that it should be possible on future designs to improve the EMI characteristics greatly at a modest penalty to weight and efficiency.

Electromagnetic instabilities in non-uniform anisotropic plasmas

The mechanisms of electromagnetic instabilities in nonuniform plasmas are analyzed, taking into account the anisotropy in temperature and temperature gradients. It is shown that resonance-type drift instabilities can be produced in nonuniform plasmas by resonant interactions between ions or electrons and plasma drift waves when the temperature anisotropy and temperature gradients vary widely. In contrast, production of off-resonance type instabilities is found to be possible only when the temperature gradients are much greater than the magnetic field gradients. It is pointed out that these findings are applicable to solar wind plasmas with hydromagnetic instabilities and shock transition regions. Attention is given to the occurrence of resonance ion instabilities and off-resonance drift cyclotron instabilities in the solar wind.

Electromagnetic radiation trapped in the magnetosphere above the plasma frequency

An electromagnetic noise band is frequently observed in the outer magnetosphere by the Imp 6 spacecraft at frequencies from about 5 to 20 kHz. This noise band generally extends throughout the region from near the plasmapause boundary to near the magnetopause boundary. The noise typically has a broadband field strength of about 5 microvolts/meter. The noise band often has a sharp lower cutoff frequency at about 5 to 10 kHz, and this cutoff has been identified as the local electron plasma frequency. Since the plasma frequency in the plasmasphere and solar wind is usually above 20 kHz, it is concluded that this noise must be trapped in the low-density region between the plasmapause and magnetopause boundaries. The noise bands often contain a harmonic frequency structure which suggests that the radiation is associated with harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency.

Electromagnetic field representation in inhomogeneous anisotropic media

Some of the basic developments in the theory of electromagnetic field representation in terms of Hertz vectors are reviewed. A solution for the field in an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium is given in terms of the two Hertz vectors. Conditions for presentation of the field in terms of uncoupled transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes, in a general orthogonal coordinate system, are derived when the permeability and permittivity tensors have only diagonal components. These conditions are compared with some known special cases.

Stability of matrix equations arising in electromagnetics

Many problems in electromagnetics can be formulated as a Fredholm equation of the first kind. In these problems it is desired to determine some function f(x) from its integral transform g(y). Except for special cases for which an explicit inverse operator is known, the equation is usually discretized by the method of moments into a matrix equation Af = g, which is then solved on a computer. A method of calculating the sensitivity of the solution of Af = g due to errors in either the vector g or the matrix A is developed. The usefulness of this method is demonstrated with problems from antenna theory, scattering theory, and remote sensing.
