Automated Purgatoid Identification: Final Report

Driving on Mars is hazardous: technical problems and unforeseen natural hazards can end a mission quickly at the worst, or result in long delays at best. This project is focused on helping to mitigate hazards posed to rovers by purgatoids: small (less than 1 m high, less than 10 m wide), ripple-like eolian bedforms commonly found scattered across the Meridiani Planum region of Mars. Due to the poorly consolidated nature of purgatoids and multiple past episodes of rovers getting stuck in them, identification and avoidance of these eolian bedforms is an important feature of rover path planning (NASA, 2011).

Simscape Modeling of a Custom Closed-Volume Tank

The library for Mathworks Simscape does not currently contain a model for a closed volume fluid tank where the ullage pressure is variable. In order to model a closed-volume variable ullage pressure tank, it was necessary to consider at least two separate cases: a vertical cylinder, and a sphere. Using library components, it was possible to construct a rough model for the cylindrical tank. It was not possible to construct a model for a spherical tank, using library components, due to the variable area. It was decided that, for these cases, it would be preferable to create a custom library component to represent each case, using the Simscape language. Once completed, the components were added to models, where filling and draining the tanks could be simulated. When the models were performing as expected, it was necessary to generate code from the models and run them in Trick (a real-time simulation program). The data output from Trick was then compared to the output from Simscape and found to be within acceptable limits.

Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Tool Capabilities Updates for Antenna Pattern and Jitter

The ability to accurately simulate the dynamic misalignment of pointing across a communications link is critical to determining the link performance between/across spacecraft and/or ground stations. The communication system antenna pattern and dynamic misalignment are key components to understanding the pointing loss induced on the communications link. Currently, projects performing these analyses use a variety of simulation tools and packages. NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) office aims to provide a unified tool set for these functions. However, the analysis tool to calculate antenna patterns is currently static, two-dimensional, and approximated based on limited input. Steps were taken to change the inputs used by the tool to create a more accurate approximation of the antenna's far field pattern as well as create a three-dimensional pattern. An additional tool was also developed to calculate time-dynamic pointing loss from the antenna pattern generated or observed antenna pattern data given dynamic pointing errors.

An Approach to Reasoning Service Migration in Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) Implementation

In this paper we consider service migration problem for Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) enabled airspace operations assuming a fixed cloud/edge infrastructure with allocated computing, storage and power resources, where cloud/edge servers, and communication stations are in a wired connected network, while vehicles use a wireless network for communication. The objective is to automatically select the best location for the requested service execution, which achieves minimum cost while satisfying the user quality of service (QoS) and available resources constraints. To this end, estimates of the response time, consumed energy and total cost are defined for each potential compute location. A mixed-integer linear program is then formulated and solved to identify optimal compute locations given QoS constraints, network infrastructure limitations, with worst-case vehicle positioning. The approach is applied to trajectory re-planning use case to avoid a collision with an emergency vehicle in real time.

Spatial Link Coverage Projections for the Glenn Research Center Communication Analysis Suite (GCAS)

Space communications are a fundamental part of every NASA mission, and reliable space communications are essential. Precise planning, simulation, and analysis of communications abilities are needed to know exactly what data rates, visibility times, and signal strength can be expected during the real missions. The goal of this work was to take a 3D icosphere, where each face was a point to be evaluated, and display the link performance onto a 2D projection of celestial bodies for links to a node location that could be spatially located at any of the icosahedral faces. 2D projections were produced for a wide range of spatial link grid sizes and compressed into low-size MAT files for ease of access and rapid implementation. The final icosahedral projections can be displayed onto various celestial body maps, using ultra-high-resolution maps for stitching. The results have proven satisfactory and are planned to support various simulation efforts.

Predictive Efficiency Modeling for Lithium-Ion Cells at Various Relative Charge and Discharge C Rates for Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration

The Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project aims to enhance battery efficiency by studying various Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) cell types. These cells are analyzed under different charging and discharging rates (C rates) to simulate a range of scenarios. As the EPFD project focuses on developing a sustainable hybrid/electric aircraft, it is essential to evaluate the efficiency, energy density, and weight of various battery cells. This ensures safety, reliability and optimal travel distance of the aircraft.
