Confinement effects on the solvation structure of solvated alkaline metal cations in a single-digit 1T-MoS 2 nanochannel: A first-principles study

Confinement plays an important role in determining ion transport in porous materials, which, in turn, may influence the performance of many energy storage and desalination devices. In this work, we combined density functional theory (DFT) with an implicit solvation model and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) to investigate the effects of nanoconfinement on several solvated alkaline metal cations in a single-digit 1T-MoS 2 nanochannel. Our DFT calculations with a solvation model indicated that cations with stronger hydration energy introduce a higher number of co-intercalated water molecules into the channel, consistent with early experimental observation obtained for MXene (2D transition metal carbide) channels. The predicted optimal water numbers for the cations were then used for AIMD simulations that explicitly include the effects of the solvent. When compared with the cations in bulk solution, our simulations showed that the hydration structure and coordination number (CN) of the solvated cations confined in the MoS 2 channel can be significantly altered. Further, we found that larger cations with weaker hydration energy (K + , Rb + , and Cs + ) exhibited a distinctive CN decrease under confinement, while smaller cations (Li + and Na + ) retained a similar hydration shell as in the bulk solution. More specifically, the hydration shell of large cations (K + , Rb + , and Cs + ) in MoS 2 showed similar features of the coordination angle to the bulk, which suggests the partially broken hydration shell with no geometry change under confinement. Our simulations provided insights into the change of the hydration structure of alkaline metal cations under confinement, which may have important implications on their transport in the 1T-MoS 2 channel.

Robust Scheduling of Microgrids Considering Unintentional Islanding Conditions

This paper proposes a robust scheduling model for microgrids considering the stochastic unintentional islanding conditions. The proposed model minimizes the total operating cost of the microgrid by efficiently coordinating the supply of power from local distributed energy resources and the main grid. To capture the prevailing uncertainties in renewable generation and demand as well as unintentional islanding conditions, a two-stage adaptive robust optimization model is formulated to minimize the total operating cost under the worst realization of the modeled uncertainties. The column and constraint generation (C&CG) method is used to solve the problem in an iterative manner. The solution of the proposed scheduling model ensures robust microgrid operation in consideration of all possible realization of renewable generation, demand and unintentional islanding condition. Numerical simulations on a microgrid consisting of a wind turbine, a PV panel, a fuel cell, two micro-turbines, a diesel generator and a battery demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Power System Event Classification and Localization Using a Convolutional Neural Network

Detection and timely identification of power system disturbances are essential for situation awareness and reliable electricity grid operation. Because records of actual events in the system are limited, ensemble simulation-based events are needed to provide adequate data for building event-detection models through deep learning; e.g., a convolutional neural network (CNN). An ensemble numerical simulation-based training data set have been generated through dynamic simulations performed on the Polish system with various types of faults in different locations. Such data augmentation is proven to be able to provide adequate data for deep learning. The synchronous generators’ frequency signals are used and encoded into images for developing and evaluating CNN models for classification of fault types and locations. With a time-domain stacked image set as the benchmark, two different time-series encoding approaches, i.e., wavelet decomposition-based frequency-domain stacking and polar coordinate system-based Gramian Angular Field (GAF) stacking, are also adopted to evaluate and compare the CNN model performance and applicability. The various encoding approaches are suitable for different fault types and spatial zonation. With optimized settings of the developed CNN models, the classification and localization accuracies can go beyond 84 and 91%, respectively.

Hierarchical Management of Distributed Energy Resources Using Chance-Constrained OPF and Extremum Seeking Control: Preprint

Distributed energy resources (DERs) are becoming an important part of distribution systems because of their economic and environmental benefits. Although their inherent intermittency and volatility introduce uncertainties into the system, they have potential to provide controllability to the system under proper coordination. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical control algorithm for distribution systems with DERs so that they have controllability similar to that of a generator bus. The upper level scheduler solves a chance-constrained optimal power flow (OPF) problem to plan the operation of the DERs based on forecasts, and the lower level distributed DER controllers leverage the extremum seeking approach to deliver the planned power at the feeder head. The proposed algorithm is tested on a modified IEEE 13-node feeder, demonstrating its effectiveness.

Bandwidth extension and conversion efficiency improvements beyond phase matching limitations using cavity-enhanced OPCPA

The conversion efficiency and phase matching bandwidth of ultrafast optical parametric amplification (OPA) are constrained by the dispersion and nonlinear coefficient of the employed crystal as well as pulse shaping effects. In our work we show that an enhancement cavity resonant with the pump seeded at the full repetition rate of the pump laser can automatically reshape the small-signal gain in optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) to achieve close-to-optimal operation. This new method termed cavity-enhanced OPCPA or C-OPCPA significantly increases both the gain bandwidth and the conversion efficiency, in addition to boosting gain for high-repetition-rate amplification. The goal in C-OPCPA is to arrive at a condition of impedance matching at all temporal coordinates, such that, in the absence of linear losses, all the incident pump power is dissipated in the nonlinear loss element, i.e., converted to signal and idler. The use of a low finesse enhancement cavity resonant with a low average power (<1W) and a high repetition rate (78MHz) pump source is shown to achieve more than 50% conversion efficiency into signal and idler from the coupled pump in an optical parametric process, whereas an equivalent amount of pump power in a single-pass configuration leads to negligible conversion. Additionally, the gain bandwidth is extended by a factor of 3-4 beyond the phase-matching limit. Our empirical observations are corroborated by a numerical analysis of depletion optimizing the single-pass case, which assesses the underlying impedance matching that is responsible for the observed performance improvements.

The role of rotation-vibration coupling in symmetric and asymmetric isotopomers of ozone

A theoretical framework and a computer code (SpectrumSDT) are developed for accurate calculations of coupled rotational–vibrational states in triatomic molecules using hyper-spherical coordinates and taking into account the Coriolis coupling effect. Concise final formulas are derived for the construction of the Hamiltonian matrix using an efficient combination of the variational basis representation and discrete variable representation methods with locally optimized basis sets and grids. First, the new code is tested by comparing its results with those of the APH3D program of Kendrick et al. [Kendrick, Pack, Walker, and Hayes, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 6673 (1999)]. Then, accurate calculations of the rovibrational spectra are carried out for doubly substituted symmetric ( 18 O 16 O 18 O) and asymmetric ( 18 O 18 O 16 O) ozone isotopomers for the total angular momentum up to J = 5. Together with similar data recently reported for the singly substituted symmetric ( 16 O 18 O 16 O) and asymmetric ( 16 O 16 O 18 O) ozone isotopomers, these calculations quantify the role of the Coriolis coupling effect in the large mass-independent isotopic enrichment of ozone, observed in both laboratory experiments and the atmosphere of the Earth. It is found that the Coriolis effect in ozone is relatively small, as evidenced by deviations of its rotational constants from the symmetric-top-rotor behavior, magnitudes of parity splittings (Λ-doubling), and ratios of rovibrational partition functions for asymmetric vs symmetric ozone molecules. It is concluded that all of these characteristics are influenced by the isotopic masses as much as they are influenced by the overall symmetry of the molecule. It is therefore unlikely that the Coriolis coupling effect could be responsible for symmetry-driven mass-independent fractionation of oxygen isotopes in ozone.

Crystal structure of pentasodium hydrogen dicitrate from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and DFT comparison

The crystal structure of pentasodium hydrogen dicitrate, Na 5 H(C 6 H 5 O 7 ) 2 , has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Each of the two independent citrate anions is joined into a dimer by very strong centrosymmetric O—H...O hydrogen bonds, with O...O distances of 2.419 and 2.409 Å. Four octahedrally coordinated Na + ions share edges to form open layers parallel to the ab plane. A fifth Na + ion in trigonal–bipyramidal coordination shares faces with NaO 6 octahedra on both sides of these layers.

A Scalable and Distributed Algorithm for Managing Residential Demand Response Programs using Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM)

For effective engagement of residential demand-side resources and to ensure efficient operation of distribution networks, we must overcome the challenges of controlling and coordinating residential components and devices at scale. To overcome this challenge, we present a distributed and scalable algorithm with a three-level hierarchical information exchange architecture for managing the residential demand response programs. First, a centralized optimization model is formulated to maximize community social welfare. Then, this centralized model is solved in a distributed manner with alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) by decomposing the original problem to utility-level and house-level problems. The information exchange between the different layers is limited to the primary residual (i.e., supply-demand mismatch), Lagrangian multipliers, and the total load of each house to protect each customer’s privacy. Simulation studies are performed on the IEEE 33 bus test system with 605 residential customers. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach can save customers’ electricity bills and reduce the peak load at the utility level without much affecting customers’ comfort and privacy. Finally, a quantitative comparison of the distributed and centralized algorithms shows the scalability advantage of the proposed ADMM-based approach, and it gives benchmarking results with achievable value for future research works.

Nonaqueous redox flow battery electrolyte comprising an ionic liquid with a metal cation coordinated to redox-active ligands

Nonaqueous redox flow batteries (RFB) hold the potential for high energy density grid scale storage, though are often limited by the solubility of the redox-active species in their electrolytes. A systematic approach enables an increase the concentration of redox-active species in electrolytes for nonaqueous RFB, starting from a metal-coordination-cation-based ionic liquid. As an example, starting with an ionic liquid consisting of a metal coordination cation (MetIL), ferrocene-containing ligands and iodide anions can be substituted into the original MetIL structure, enabling a nearly 4× increase in capacity compared to original MetIL structure. Application of this strategy to other chemistries, optimizing electrolyte melting point and conductivity could yield >10 M redox-active electrons.

Control and Management of Multiple Converters in a Residential Smart Grid

Power electronic systems are becoming a staple building block for electric grid networks. However, these systems have been largely designed to grid integrate in ad hoc configurations with little or no coordination of control. This work proposes a central controller and power electronic system hardware and software design for a residential system (photovoltaic, energy storage and residential building). This system supports auto-integration, plug and play capabilities, and optimal energy management to meet different use cases. Modelling and multi-day testing of the system have been conducted in a controller hardware-in-the-loop (C-HIL) testbed. Multiple use cases and pricing options have been considered as part of the simulation and testing. Results are presented of these systems as a proof of principle.

Analytic Framework for Optimal Sizing of Hydrogen Fueling Stations for Heavy Duty Vehicles at Ports (CRADA 512)

This CRADA presents the strategy that PNNL and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) will take to support Seattle City Light (SCL) in properly sizing a hydrogen station for class 8 drayage trucks at the Port of Seattle (Port), as part of a coordinated plan of mixed uses for hydrogen. The proper sizing for the fueling station is unique from past experiences because it will be part of a coordinated plan for a multi-use scheme for the hydrogen, and not a stand-alone fueling station. The multiple use-streams, and their relative values, will impact all facets of station sizing and design, including fueling rates, storage technology and size, equipment selection, and safety considerations. The future deployment of this fueling station, and its proper sizing, is seen as a critical first step in the larger vision of utilizing hydrogen to address a range of issues for SCL and the Port. These include, but are not limited to, large scale fueling of medium duty (MD) and heavy duty (HD) vehicles to reduce emissions, support of adjacent light duty (LD) vehicles, support of critical port operation during extreme events (e.g. resiliency), mitigation of capital intensive electrical distribution system upgrades to support evolving port operations, a market resource that can be used by SCL to generate revenue, and support of planned future maritime operations that currently require heavy use of shipboard hydrogen. While the broader use of hydrogen by SCL and the Port is not the focus of this CRADA, how its use impacts the design of the initial vehicle fueling station, and the modular approach, are the central work. As such, this project will develop the framework and process for developing a modular station design that considers the broader range of coordinate uses of hydrogen as an energy resource.

Color optimization of red OLEDs via periodic and gradient deposition rate of fluorescent dopants

We have investigated a method to enhance the light emission efficiency and color tuning for mixture of dyes with varying the growth parameters, during Alq{sub 3}:Nile Red deposition. We used solvent bath and green laser (532 nm) for improvement of the performance of devices. This paper presents two kind of evaporation method, periodic and gradient. We observed that periodic emission layers can greatly improve the device performances such as electroluminescence, chromaticity coordinates, luminance, and reduced the turn on voltage. The periodic 3 structure with evaporation rate of (0.1 → 3 → 2 → 3 → 2 → 0.1 A°/s) has a luminance of 3000 cd/m{sup 2} and maximum efficiency of 1.8 cd/A at 18 V which are the highest values among devices.

Analytic Nuclear Gradients Including Oriented External Electric Fields in a Molecule-Fixed Frame

Electric-field-assisted chemistry has attracted much attention in recent years, particularly in the context of oriented external electric fields for controlling molecular structure and reactivity. Such fields have been explored in a wide range of applications, including switching materials, nanoparticles, controllable catalysts, medicines, and clinical therapies. However, the determination of fixed fields in the laboratory frame becomes ineffective for flexible molecules, as conformational changes can significantly alter the relative orientation between the applied field and molecular structure. In this work, we propose two molecular reference frames─the principal axis frame and the local reference frame─to define oriented electric fields within the molecular framework. These coordinate systems powerfully eliminate ambiguities in the relative orientation between the applied field and the molecule. Analytic nuclear gradients in the presence of external electric fields are derived and implemented, with an initial application to field-dependent geometry optimizations of cis - and trans -formanilide. Analysis of the resulting field-induced equilibrium structures reveals distinct structural responses, validating the accuracy and robustness of the proposed formalism. The analytic gradient framework enables systematic investigations of molecular properties and reactivity under arbitrarily oriented electric fields, opening new opportunities for computational modeling and rational design in electric-field-controlled chemistry.

Thermal Overloading Risk Mitigation With a Semi-Analytical Probabilistic Model on Branch Current

A semi-analytical formulation is presented in this paper for the probability computation of branch current in multiphase systems. The developed formula is derived based on the linear power flow model in rectangular coordinates. The system uncertainty injections can be renewable energy resources or loads and are modeled using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The developed formula can be used to compute the line current violation probability as well as integrate into optimal power flow problem as chance-constraint relaxation. Here, the proposed formula is first compared with the Matlab embedded numerical integration function to show its performance. Besides, the semi-analytical formula is validated and compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method using the IEEE 123-bus system, EPRI Ckt5, and Ckt7 systems.

Optimal Managed Fast-Charging Model for Electric Vehicle Fleets with High Utilization and Multiple Charge-Acceptance Curves

A predictive control/scheduling optimization model is proposed for managed charging of an electric vehicle (EV) fleet - under time-of-use energy and demand prices, high vehicle utilization frequency (short dwell times), multiple charge- acceptance curves (configurable charging rates), and flexible vehicle demand. This context is particularly relevant for flight schools (small electric aircraft) or other commercial facilities where an EV fleet performs multiple operating and fast-charging sessions on the same day. The proposed model performs both the operational and charging scheduling of the vehicles, which is not typically done for residential managed charging and significantly increases problem complexity. The problem is formulated as a MILP model and a case study of a small fast-charging station is presented. Results demonstrate a significant reduction in operating cost, mainly from peak shaving during high demand price periods, achieved by coordinating the operation of different vehicles, chargers and charging rates.
