Lunar laser ranging data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center: Filtered observations for 1971 July through 1971 December and unfiltered photon detections for 1972 January through 1972 June

Documentation to be used in conjunction with data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center is presented which concerns the filtered observations obtained during laser ranging operations between the McDonald Observatory and the Apollo 11, 14, and 15 reflectors, and the unfiltered photon detections. As part of the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment, three widely separated reflector arrays were placed on the moon. Laser ranging equipment, both ground based on lunar based, is described, and coordinates of the intersection of the polar and transverse axes of the telescope are given. Filtered and unfiltered data are defined and discussed.

Apollo/Soyuz test project operational data book. Volume 2: ASTP mass properties data book

Spacecraft mass properties data are provided for use in mission planning, trajectory documentation, mission simulations, and consumable loading. Spacecraft for use in determining locations of spacecraft components and the relationship to coordinate systems in the launch and docked configuration. Mass properties and consumable loading data for the ASTP mission are included along with consumables mass property data and mission independent consumable loading information for the CSM and DM.

Data processing of Martian topographic information obtained from ground-based radar and spectroscopy and from Mariners 6 and 7. Martian topography elevations: Data processing

Papers are presented which were published as a result of a project involving the preparation of a topographical elevation contour map of Mars from all data sources available through 1969, as well as the observation of Mars by spectroscopic methods in 1971 to provide additional pressure data for topographic information. Topics of the papers include: the analysis of large-scale Martian topography variations - data preparation from earth based radar, earth based CO2 spectroscopy, and Mariners 6 and 7 CO2 spectroscopy; the analysis of water content in observed Martian white clouds; and Martian, lunar, and terrestrial crusts - a three-dimensional exercise in comparative geophysics.

Data for NASA's AVE 2 pilot experiment. Part 1: 25-mb sounding data and synoptic charts

Tabulated rawinsonde data at 25-mb intervals from surface to 25 mb is presented for the 54 stations participating in the Atmospheric Variability Experiment 11 pilot experiment which began at 12 GMT on May 11, 1974, and ended at 12 GMT on May 12, 1974. Soundings were made at 3 hour intervals. A brief discussion is included on methods of processing and data accuracy, and synoptic charts prepared from the the data are presented. The area covered by the sounding stations is the eastern United States, east of approximately 105 deg west longitude.

Correlation between cloud thickness and brightness using Nimbus 4 THIR data /11.5-micron channel/ and ATS 3 digital data

Nimbus 4 data (11.5-micron) channel and ATS 3 digitized data were analyzed for three days during April and May 1970. Cloud-top temperature, as measured by the 11.5-micron channel of the satellite radiometer, shows a close negative correlation with cloud brightness measured by the ATS 3 satellite. This is especially true in well-developed cumulonimbus clouds. An estimate of cloud heights corresponding to cloud-top temperature was obtained by using radiosonde data and radar images, and the relationships between the cloud thickness and brightness counts were derived for the cumulonimbus clouds.

Earth Resources Technology Satellite-1 (ERTS-1) data and anthropology: Use of these data in carrying capacity estimates for sites in Upper Volta and Niger

The author has identified the following significant results. Repetitively derived multispectral band imagery from ERTS-1 is now available for many parts of the earth's land surface and represents major new data sources for anthropological work in habitat, land use, and settlement patterns. A completed first step test of ERTS-1 data is available in carrying capacity estimates for Mossi, Hausa, and Sonrai sites derived from: (1) field work; (2) aerial photography; and (3) ERTS-1. Data can test more than one carrying capacity formula.

Gyroflex data transmittal and data acquisition system analysis

Data obtained from the evaluation of GYROFLEX gyro is presented herein, along with a description of the data acquisition system. In addition, the appendices contain an analysis of the voltmeter used for data collection, and the filtering technique employed. It is shown that the test setup is satisfactory for testing GYROFLEX gyros.

Preliminary data processing system for telemetry data from Interkosmos-8 type satellites

The preliminary data processing system (PDPS), a set of algorithms, programs, equipment, data storage and memory devices, and all devices controlling the processing, is described using the Intercosmos-8 satellite as an example. Each stage of the system is considered along with its content and sequence. The essential elements of the data processing structure are described and the concepts underlying the selection of these elements are discussed.

The problem of the man-space data interface during computer processing of data

The necessity is shown for data output at different processing stages to man, taking into account the processing level, the output objective, and the user. The use of the phototelegraph I/O computer device for this purpose is considered in detail, and several examples are given. It is shown that the type of output (shaded of halftone graphs), the scales, the compression, and the mutual position of the data are selected on the basis of the character of the data displayed.

Analysis of structural dynamic data from Skylab. Volume 2: Skylab analytical and test model data

The orbital configuration test modal data, analytical test correlation modal data, and analytical flight configuration modal data are presented. Tables showing the generalized mass contributions (GMCs) for each of the thirty tests modes are given along with the two dimensional mode shape plots and tables of GMCs for the test correlated analytical modes. The two dimensional mode shape plots for the analytical modes and uncoupled and coupled modes of the orbital flight configuration at three development phases of the model are included.

Data reduction complex analog-to-digital data processing requirements for onsite test facilities

The analog to digital processing requirements of onsite test facilities are described. The source and medium of all input data to the Data Reduction Complex (DRC) and the destination and medium of all output products of the analog-to-digital processing are identified. Additionally, preliminary input and output data formats are presented along with the planned use of the output products.

Electron content of the ionosphere and the plasma sphere on the basis of ATS-6-Data, NNSS-data, and ionograms

The reported investigation takes into account data obtained with the aid of the geostationary satellite ATS-6, the satellites of the U.S. navy navigation system (NNSS) at an altitude between 900 and 1200 km, and the satellites ISIS 1 and ISIS 2. The altitude range between ground and ATS-6 is divided into two regions, including the 'ionosphere', involving the region with an upper limit of 2000 km, and the 'plasma sphere', involving the region above an altitude of 2000 km. Data concerning the electron content obtained from different sources are compared, taking into account discrepancies between ionogram-derived values and values computed on the basis of satellite measurements. Attention is also given to the vertical electron content of the ionosphere on the basis of a combination of data obtained with the aid of the ATS-6 and the NNSS.

Solar radiation observation stations with complete listing of data archived by the National Climatic Center, Asheville, North Carolina and initial listing of data not currently archived

A listing is provided of organizations taking solar radiation data, the 166 stations where observations are made, the type of equipment used, the form of the recorded data, and the period of operation of each station. Included is a listing of the data from 150 solar radiation stations collected over the past 25 years and stored by the National Climatic Center.

Evaluation of mechanical property data on the 2219 aluminum alloy and application of the data to the design of liquid hydrogen tankage

The potential use of thin guage 2219 aluminum alloy for airborne liquid hydrogen tankage was examined. Existing data were processed using the Newman two parameter equation, a prediction was made for the life expectancy of a hypothetical liquid hydrogen tank, and additional experimental data were generated in an attempt to correct the deficiencies in the existing data.

Data for NASA's AVE 5 experiment: 25 mb sounding data and synoptic charts

The AVE V Experiment is described and tabulated rawinsonde data at 25-mb intervals from the surface to 25 mb for the 23 stations participating in the experiment are presented. Soundings were taken between 0000 GMT, June 11, and 1200 GMT, June 12, 1976. The methods of data processing and accuracy are briefly discussed. An example of contact data is also included.

Analysis and compilation of missile aerodynamic data. Volume 1: Data presentation and analysis

Most of the aerodynamic configurations considered are suitable for highly maneuverable air-to-air or surface-to-air missiles; however, data for a few air-to-surface, cruise missiles, and one projectile configuration are also presented. The Mach number range of the data is from about 0.2 to 4.63; however, data for most configurations cover only a portion of this range.

The unified data system - A distributed processing network for control and data handling on a spacecraft

This paper presents the results obtained in a continuing investigation of real-time distributed processing systems which is being conducted at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. A distributed processor architecture has been developed for control and data handling on a planetary spacecraft. This system, designated the Unified Data System, has been implemented in a feasibility breadboard. The following aspects of the Unified Data System are described: (1) standardized building block elements and their configuration into microprocessor modules, (2) a highly redundant bus structure which connects the various modules and facilitates intercommunications with minimal software support, (3) the structure of software within the individual modules and its coordination between modules, and (4) the mechanisms by which fault-tolerance can be implemented within the network. Through the attributes of multilevel standardization, simplicity, and flexibility, this system is expected to result in significant cost savings to future spacecraft missions.

A technique for the determination of Louisiana marsh salinity zone from vegetation mapped by multispectral scanner data: A comparison of satellite and aircraft data

Vegetation in selected study areas on the Louisiana coast was mapped using low altitude aircraft and satellite (LANDSAT) multispectral scanner data. Fresh, brackish, and saline marshes were then determined from the remotely sensed presence of dominant indicator plant associations. Such vegetational classifications were achieved from data processed through a standard pattern recognition computer program. The marsh salinity zone maps from the aircraft and satellite data compared favorably within the broad salinity regimes. The salinity zone boundaries determined by remote sensing compared favorably with those interpolated from line-transect field observations from an earlier year.
