Cyber Protection of Grid-Connected Devices Through Embedded Online Security

Cybersecurity research regarding the electric power grid has primarily been focused on protecting the communication layer of grid-connected devices against cyber-attack threats. Although many developed methods have greatly reduced the effects of a cyber-attack on the vulnerabilities of grid-connected devices, discovering new vulnerabilities is inevitable and a constant threat. As a result, the overall reliability and security of network communications with regard to grid-connected devices is a concern. Here, this paper proposes a method that further secures a system by focusing on the control and hardware layer of grid-connected devices. The device’s controller firmware will be validated and authenticated using integrated device emulation resources prior to being activated to control the grid-connected device. This verification process is performed while the controller is online and actively controlling power flows related to the device. Therefore, an attack to the system through a malicious firmware patch would be detected by the online security and rejected while safely maintaining continuous and stable control of the device. This method integrates the concepts of firmware hot-patching, digital twins, and active monitoring into an overall cybersecurity protection system.

Model compilation for embedded real-time planning and diagnosis

This paper describes MEXEC, an implemented micro executive that compiles a device model into an interal structure. Not only does this structure facilitate computing the most likely current device mode from n sets of sensor measurements, but it also facilitates generating an n step reconfiguration plan that is most likely not to result in reaching a target mode - if such a plan exists.

Analyzing Risks and Vulnerabilities of Various Computer Systems and Undergoing Exploitation using Embedded Devices

Security is one of the most if not the most important areas today. After the several attacks on the United States, security everywhere has heightened from airports to communication among the military branches legionnaires. With advanced persistent threats (APTs) on the rise following Stuxnet, government branches and agencies are required, more than ever, to follow several standards, policies and procedures to reduce the likelihood of a breach. Attack vectors today are very advanced and are going to continue to get more and more advanced as security controls advance. This creates a need for networks and systems to be in an updated, patched and secured state in a launch control system environment. Attacks on critical systems are becoming more and more relevant and frequent. Nation states are hacking into critical networks that might control electrical power grids or water dams as well as carrying out advanced persistent threat (APTs) attacks on government entities. NASA, as an organization, must protect its self from attacks from all different types of attackers with different motives. Although the International Space Station was created, there is still competition between the different space programs. With that in mind, NASA might get attacked and breached for various reasons such as espionage or sabotage. My project will provide a way for NASA to complete an in house penetration test which includes: asset discovery, vulnerability scans, exploit vulnerabilities and also provide forensic information to harden systems. Completing penetration testing is a part of the compliance requirements of the Federal Information Security Act (FISMA) and NASA NPR 2810.1 and related NASA Handbooks. This project is to demonstrate how in house penetration testing can be conducted that will satisfy all of the compliance requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), as outlined in FISMA. By the end of this project, I hope to have carried out the tasks stated above as well as gain an immense knowledge about compliance, security tools, networks and network devices, as well as policies and procedures.

Embedded Systems Hardware Integration and Code Development for Maraia Capsule and E-MIST

The cost of sending large spacecraft to orbit makes them undesirable for carrying out smaller scientific missions. Small spacecraft are more economical and can be tailored for missions where specific tasks need to be carried out, the Maraia capsule is such a spacecraft. Maraia will allow for samples of experiments conducted on the International Space Station to be returned to earth. The use of balloons to conduct experiments at the edge of space is a practical approach to reducing the large expense of using rockets. E-MIST is a payload designed to fly on a high altitude balloon. It can maintain science experiments in a controlled manner at the edge of space. The work covered here entails the integration of hardware onto each of the mentioned systems and the code associated with such work. In particular, the resistance temperature detector, pressure transducers, cameras, and thrusters for Maraia are discussed. The integration of the resistance temperature detectors and motor controllers to E-MIST is described. Several issues associated with sensor accuracy, code lock-up, and in-flight reset issues are mentioned. The solutions and proposed solutions to these issues are explained.

Molybdenum Carbide Electrocatalyst In Situ Embedded in Porous Nitrogen–Rich Carbon Nanotubes Promotes Rapid Kinetics in Sodium–Metal–Sulfur Batteries

This work is the first report of a molybdenum carbide-based electrocatalyst for sulfur-based sodium metal batteries (SMBs/NMBs). MoC/Mo 2 C is in-situ grown on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes in parallel with formation of extensive nanoporosity. Sulfur impregnation (50 wt% S) results in unique triphasic architecture termed MoC/Mo 2 C@PCNT-S. Quasi-solid-state phase transformation to Na 2 S is promoted in carbonate electrolyte, with in-situ time-resolved Raman, XPS and optical analysis demonstrating minimal soluble polysulfides. MoC/Mo 2 C@PCNT-S cathodes delivered among the most promising rate performance characteristics in literature, achieving 987 mAh g -1 at 1 Ag -1 , 818 mAh g -1 at 3 A g -1 , and 621 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 . The cells deliver superior cycling stability, retaining 650 mAh g -1 after 1000 cycles at 1.5 Ag -1 , corresponding to 0.028% capacity decay per cycle. High mass loading cathodes (64 wt% S, 12.7 mg cm -2 ) also show cycling stability, with anode degradation due to deep plating/stripping driving capacity decay. Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that formation energy of Na 2 S x (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) on surface of MoC/Mo 2 C is significantly lowered compared to analogous redox in liquid. Strong binding of Na 2 S x (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) on MoC/Mo 2 C surfaces results from charge transfer between the sulfur and Mo sites on carbides' surface.

B—N–Bond–Embedded Triplet Terpolymers with Small Singlet–Triplet Energy Gaps for Suppressing Non–Radiative Recombination and Improving Blend Morphology in Organic Solar Cells

Suppressing the photon energy loss (E loss ), especially the non-radiative loss, is of importance to further improve the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, typical π-conjugated semiconductors possess a large singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE ST ), leading to a lower triplet state than charge transfer state and contributing to a non-radiative loss channel of the photocurrent by the triplet state. Herein, a series of triplet polymer donors are developed by introducing a BNIDT block into the PM6 polymer backbone. Further, the high electron affinity of BNIDT and the opposite resonance effect of the B—N bond in BNIDT results in a lowered highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a largely reduced ΔE ST . Moreover, the morphology of the active blends is also optimized by fine-tuning the BNIDT content. Therefore, non-radiative recombination via the terminal triplet loss channels and morphology traps is effectively suppressed. The PNB-3 (with 3% BNIDT):L8-BO device exhibits both small ΔE ST and optimized morphology, favoring more efficient charge transfer and transport. Finally, the simultaneously enhanced V oc of 0.907 V, J sc of 26.59 mA cm –2 , and FF of 78.86% contribute to a champion PCE of 19.02%. Therefore, introducing B—N bonds into benchmark polymers is a possible avenue toward higher-performance of OSCs.

3D Hybrid Plasmonic Framework with Au Nanopillars Embedded in Nitride Multilayers Integrated on Si

Integration of nanoscale photonic and plasmonic components on Si substrates is a critical step toward Si-based integrated nanophotonic devices. Herein, a set of unique complex 3D metamaterials with intercalated nanolayered and nanopillar structures with tunable plasmonic and optical properties on Si substrates is designed. More specifically, the 3D metamaterials combine metal (Au) nanopillars and alternating metal-nitride (Au-TiN and Au-TaN) nanolayers, epitaxially grown on Si substrates. The ultrafine Au nanopillars ( d ≈ 3 nm) continuously grow throughout all the nanolayers with high epitaxial quality. Novel optical properties, such as highly anisotropic optical property, high absorbance covering the entire visible spectrum regime, and hyperbolic property in the visible regime, are demonstrated. Furthermore, a waveguide based on a silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) ridge with a multilayer structure is successfully fabricated. The demonstration of 3D nanoscale metamaterial design integrated on Si opens up a new route toward tunable metamaterials nanostructure designs with versatile material selection for various optical components in Si integrated photonics.

Efficient co-solution of time step size and independent state in simulations of fluid-driven fracture propagation with embedded meshes

Here we present an efficient time-continuation scheme for fluid-driven fracture propagation problems in the extended finite element method framework. The approach applies a monolithic solution strategy to a fully coupled and implicit approximation of hydro-mechanical systems in conjunction with simultaneous linear elastic propagation of multiple fractures. At the end of each time step, the process ensures that the weakest fracture tip is in an equilibrium propagation regime. Furthermore, the solution process provides an initialization procedure for the newly created fracture spaces and an a priori estimate of the stress intensity factor growth rate, improving simulation robustness, and efficiency. The solution process is validated using the Kristianovich-Geertsma-de Klerk analytical solution under the toughness- and viscosity-dominated regimes. It is also extended to and demonstrated on problems with multiple fractures undergoing simultaneous propagation with stress shadow interactions. Numerical examples demonstrate that the solution process can reduce the required computational cost by one order of magnitude compared to other existing methods.

Atomically Dispersed Silver Atoms Embedded in NiCo Layer Double Hydroxide Boost Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract Bimetallic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising catalysts for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Despite good stability, NiCo LDH displays an unsatisfactory OER activity relative to the most robust NiFe LDH and CoFe LDH. Herein, a novel NiCo LDH electrocatalyst modified with single‐atom silver grown on carbon cloth (Ag SA ‐NiCo LDH/CC) that exhibits exceptional OER activity and stability in 1.0 m KOH is reported. The Ag SA ‐NiCo LDH/CC catalyst only requires a low overpotential of 192 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , obviously boosting the OER activity of NiCo LDH/CC (410 mV@10 mA cm −2 ). Inspiringly, Ag SA ‐NiCo LDH/CC can maintain its high activity for up to 500 h at a large current density of 100 mA cm −2 , exceeding most single‐atom OER catalysts. In situ Raman spectroscopy studies uncover that the in situ formed NiCoOOH during OER is the real active species. Hard X‐ray absorption spectrum (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate that single‐atom Ag occupying Ni site increases the chemical valence of Ni elements, and then weakens the adsorption of oxygen‐contained intermediates on Ni sites, fundamentally accounting for the enhanced OER performance.
