Screening method improves performance of nickel-cadmium batteries

Weight of single plate in batch is used as criterion for selecting those plates with uniform, high ampere hour capacity. When substrate and plaque weights are uniform, observed current capacity differences are dependent on quantity of active material in plaque.

A study to determine the feasibility of a low sonic boom supersonic transport

A study was made to determine the feasibility of supersonic transport configurations designed to produce a goal sonic boom signature with low overpressure. The results indicate that, in principle, such a concept represents a potentially realistic design approach assuming technology of the 1985 time period. Two sonic boom goals were selected which included: (1) A high speed design that would produce shock waves no stronger than 48 Newtons per square meter (1.0 psf); and an intermediate Mach number (mid-Mach) design that would produce shock waves no stronger than 24 Newtons per square meter. The high speed airplane design was a Mach 2.7 blended arrow wing configuration which was capable of carrying 183 passengers a distance of 7000 km (3780 nmi) while meeting the signature goal. The mid-Mach airplane designed was a Mach 1.5 low arrow wing configuration with a horizontal tail which could carry 180 passengers a distance of 5960 km (3220 nmi).

Transmissivity of carbon monoxide in the 2.3 microns band region

Line strengths and self and nitrogen broadened half-widths have been determined from high resolution spectroscopic measurements of selected lines in the 2.3 micrometer band region of CO. The CO 0-2 total band strength is estimated to be 2.086 + or - 0.146 cm/1 (ATM-cm)/1 STP which is higher than most previously reported values. The line half-widths are also generally higher than those in the literature.

Rocket spectrometer for investigation of the far ultraviolet solar spectrum

A rocket-borne Ebert spectrometer and telescope were used for analysis of the solar spectrum. The instrument was arranged in the high resolution line scanning mode. Selected emission lines between 1170 and 1640 A were scanned, and a complete wavelength scan was made from 1170 A to 1850 A. Accurate measurements were made of the line profiles of the He II lines at 1640 A, C IV lines at 1550 A, Si IV lines at 1400 A, C II lines at 1335 A, the N V lines at 1240 A, and the C III lines at 1175 A. Accurate intensity measurements of the quiet sun spectrum for wavelengths between 1174 A and 3220 A were obtained. Spectral resolution was better than 0.03 A over most of the range and spatial resolution was relatively low so that the observations are averaged over the chromospheric network. Plots of absolute intensity versus wave length were prepared for the full wavelength range of the observations.

Further observations of the Orion Nebula cluster

New spectral types for 16 stars, UBVRI photometry for 13 stars and UBVRIHKL photometry for 35 stars in the Orion Nebula cluster are presented. Analysis of these data together with those of Penston (1973) shows that the reddening law in the cluster is normal. Previous claims for high ratios of total to selective absorption are caused by mistaking infrared emission for a hole in the absorption at that wavelength. The distance modulus of M42 is 8.0 + or - 0.1 mag. Star formation in the cluster has been in progress over the last 10 million yr. The infrared colors of cluster stars are correlated with their range of variation in the optical region.

Conceptual approach study of a 200 watt per kilogram solar array

Solar array candidate configurations (flexible rollup, flexible flat-pact, semi-rigid panel, semi-rigid flat-pack) were analyzed with particular attention to the specific power (W/kg) requirement. Two of these configurations (flexible rollup and flexible flat-pack) are capable of delivering specific powers equal to or exceeding the baseline requirement of 200 W/kg. Only the flexible rollup is capable of in-flight retraction and subsequent redeployment. The wrap-around contact photovoltaic cell configuration has been chosen over the conventional cell. The demand for ultra high specific power forces the selection of ultra-thin cells and cover material. Based on density and mass range considerations, it was concluded that 13 micrometers of FEP Teflon is sufficient to protect the cell from a total proton fluency of 2(10 to the 12th power) particles/sq cm over a three-year interplanetary mission. The V-stiffened, lattice boom deployed, flexible substrate rollup array holds the greatest promise of meeting the baseline requirements set for this study.

Method for fabricating a mass spectrometer inlet leak

A method of fabricating an inlet leak for measuring chemically reactive gases is proposed. The method involves the steps of preparing a selected internal surface of a high melting point metal tubing for sealing to a glass tubing. A portion of the glass tubing is inserted into the prepared portion of the metal tubing, the glass tubing having an outer diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the metal tubing. The inserted glass tubing is sealed to the internal surface of the metal tubing; the glass tubing is drawn under a magnifying device to reduce the entire interior diameter thereof to substantially two microns; and an end portion of the drawing glass tubing is broken away.

Work function determination of promising electrode materials for thermionic converters

Work performed on this contract was primarily for the evaluation of selected electrode materials for thermionic energy converters. The original objective was to characterize selected nickel based superalloys up to temperatures of 1400 K. It was found that an early selection, Inconel 800 produced a high vapor pressure which interfered with the vacuum emission measurements. The program then shifted to two other areas. The first area was to obtain emission from the superalloys in a cesiated atmosphere. The cesium plasma helps to suppress the vaporization interference. The second area involved characterization of the Lanthanum-Boron series as thermionic emitters. These final two areas resulted in three journal publications which are attached to this report.

A dual-amplifier hot-wire anemometer

The conceptual design of a dual-amplifier constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is described. This hot-wire anemometer consists of three basic independent modules: a Wheatstone bridge in which the hot wire is one of its arms, an error-correction amplifier, and a voltage-controlled current source. The last two modules constitute the feedback network of this hot-wire anemometer. Thus the output voltage across the wire is a true function of the instantaneous changes in the wire resistance induced by the cooling effect of the flow. The dual-amplifier is capable of reaching relatively high frequency response through adequate selection of its active elements. Suitable gain of the error-correction amplifier and proper choice of the transfer function of the current source has yielded a frequency bandwidth up to 200 kHz.

Pioneer Venus Orbiter Electron Temperature Probe

The Orbiter Electron Temperature Probe (OETP) instrumentation and measurement technique has been designed to perform in-situ measurements of electron temperature and electron and ion density in the ionosphere of Venus. Adaptive sweep voltage circuitry continuously tracks the changing electron temperature and spacecraft potential while auto-ranging electrometers adjust their gain in response to the changing plasma density. Control signals used in the instrument to achieve this automatic tracking provide a continuous monitor of the ionospheric parameters without telemetering each volt-ampere curve. Internal data storage permits high data rate sampling of selected raw characteristic curves for low rate transmission to earth. These curves are used to verify or correct the inflight processed data. Sample in orbit measurements are presented to demonstrate instrument performance.

USAF solar thermal applications overview

Process heat applications were compared to solar thermal technologies. The generic process heat applications were analyzed for solar thermal technology utilization, using SERI's PROSYS/ECONOMAT model in an end use matching analysis and a separate analysis was made for solar ponds. Solar technologies appear attractive in a large number of applications. Low temperature applications at sites with high insolation and high fuel costs were found to be most attractive. No one solar thermal technology emerges as a clearly universal or preferred technology, however,, solar ponds offer a potential high payoff in a few, selected applications. It was shown that troughs and flat plate systems are cost effective in a large number of applications.

The Dynamics Explorer Langmuir probe instrument

The Dynamics Explorer Langmuir probe instrument (DE-LANG), a spare unit from the Pioneer Venus mission that has been modified to work with the DE spacecraft, is described. Two independent sensors are connected to individual adaptive sweep voltage circuits that continuously track the changing electron temperature and spacecraft potential while autoranging electrometers adjust their gain in response to the changing plasma density. The control signals used in achieving this automatic tracking provide a continuous monitor of the ionospheric parameters without telemetering each volt-ampere curve. In addition, internal data storage circuits permit high-resolution, high-data-rate sampling of selected volt-ampere curves for transmission to the ground to verify or correct the inflight processed data.

Role of fuel chemical properties on combustor radiative heat load

In an attempt to rigorously study the fuel chemical property influence on combustor radiative heat load, UTRC has conducted an experimental program using 25 test fuels. The burner was a 12.7-cm dia cylindrical device fueled by a single pressure-atomizing injector. Fuel physical properties were de-emphasized by selecting injectors which produced highly-atomized, and hence rapidly-vaporizing sprays. The fuels were specified to cover the following wide ranges of chemical properties: hydrogen, 9.1 to 15- (wt) pct; total aromatics, 0 to 100 (vol) pct; and naphthalene, 0 to 30 (vol) pct. They included standard fuels, specialty products and fuel blends. Fuel naphthalene content exhibited the strongest influence on radiation of the chemical properties investigated. Smoke point was a good global indicator of radiation severity.
