Hydrogen depolarized cell pair definition for space station application

Evaluation testing of the cell pair design of an electrochemical carbon dioxide collection subsystem was conducted. The system is proposed for use with the space station prototype. The objectives of the analytical and miscellaneous tasks in support of the test program are explained. An analysis was made of the number of cells required for the space station prototype. It was determined that 33 cell pairs would satisfy the space station prototype performance.

Character of the pair interaction in solid and gaseous H2

Existing theoretical H2 pair potentials are investigated. We develop a spherically symmetric potential applicable to solid H2. It yields a ground-state energy of -98.7 K (experimental values range from -93.5 to -101 K). Pressure-volume data are also in excellent agreement with experiment between 0 and 25 kbar. Second virial coefficients using this potential are consistently too low. When an anisotropic pair potential is used, agreement becomes very good.

The effects of simultaneous but unequal response-independent pay to pairs of human subjects on masseter EMG and bodily movements

Electromyographic activity and bodily movement of the masseter muscle were recorded in three pairs of human subjects, where one member of each pair was systematically presented with greater pay and each could reduce the value of money received by the other. The number of biting responses was as high or higher for the subject receiving less money immediately after coin delivery. However, the number of masseter contractions for the subject receiving more money remained higher at other times during the unequal pay conditions. No responses of pay reduction were emitted by any subject toward another.

A Model for the Vortex Pair Associated with a Jet in a Cross Flow

A model is presented for the contrarotating vortex pair that is formed by a round, turbulent, subsonic jet directed normally into a uniform, subsonic cross flow. The model consists of a set of algebraic equations that describe the properties of the vortex pair as a function of their location in the jet plume. The parameters of the model are physical characteristics of the vortices such as the vortex strength, spacing, and core size. These parameters are determined by velocity measurements at selective points in the jet plume.

Simultaneous master-slave Omega pairs

Master-slave sequence ordering of the Omega system is suggested as a method of improving the pair geometry for low-cost receiver user benefit. The sequence change will not affect present sophisticated processor users other than require new labels for some pair combinations, but may require worldwide transmitter operators to slightly alter their long-range synchronizing techniques.

Measurements of selected psi /3684/ branching ratios from a study of secondary lepton pairs

The measurements considered were made at the electron-positron storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The apparatus used consists of two identical spectrometers mounted in a collinear configuration about the beam-interaction region. The energies of secondary electrons or positrons are measured with good resolution in large NaI(Tl) total-absorption detectors. Data accumulated without gamma-ray converters were examined for electron-positron pairs. The data taken with gamma-ray converters in place and at center-of-mass energies within 1 MeV of the resonance energy were scanned for evidence of either charged particles or converted gamma rays accompanying the detected muon pairs.

Tailoff thrust and impulse imbalance between pairs of Space Shuttle solid rocket motors

The tailoff thrust and impulse imbalance between pairs of solid rocket motors is of particular interest for the Space Shuttle Vehicle because of the potential control problems that exist with this asymmetric configuration. Although a similar arrangement of solid rocket motors was utilized for the Titan Program, they produced less than one-half the thrust level of the Space Shuttle at web action time, and the overall vehicle was symmetric. Since the Titan Program does provide the most applicable actual test data, 23 flight pairs were analyzed to determine the actual tailoff thrust and impulse imbalance experienced. The results were scaled up using the predicted web action time thrust and tailoff time to arrive at values for the Space Shuttle. These values were then statistically treated to obtain a prediction of the maximum imbalance one could expect to experience during the Shuttle Program.

A system for extracting 3-dimensional measurements from a stereo pair of TV cameras

Obtaining accurate three-dimensional (3-D) measurement from a stereo pair of TV cameras is a task requiring camera modeling, calibration, and the matching of the two images of a real 3-D point on the two TV pictures. A system which models and calibrates the cameras and pairs the two images of a real-world point in the two pictures, either manually or automatically, was implemented. This system is operating and provides three-dimensional measurements resolution of + or - mm at distances of about 2 m.

Vortex pairing and organized structures in axisymmetric jets under controlled excitation

A description is given of experiments which have been carried out in a circular air jet facility consisting of two settling chambers in sequence. Sinusoidal perturbations in the exit profile are introduced at controlled frequencies and amplitudes with the aid of a loudspeaker attached to the wall of the first chamber. It was found that vortex pairing in circular jets can occur in two distinct modes, including the shear layer mode and the jet mode. Amplitude variations, the conditions for strong vortex pairing, and the spectral evolution downstream are illustrated with the aid of graphs.

Analysis of star pair latitudes

Star pair latitude observations forming the basis for the pole positions reported by the International Polar Motion Service (IPMS) are processed to produce a mean pole position. However, the time series of raw observations contains high frequency information which is lost in the calculation of the mean pole. Analysis of 2931 star pair observations reveals a possible large excitation at one cycle per solar day. The average power level in the frequency band of the tesseral tides is seen to be high, although the peaks do not occur at the expected tidal frequencies.

Configurations of base-pair complexes in solutions

A theoretical search for the most stable conformations (i.e., stacked or hydrogen bonded) of the base pairs A-U and G-C in water, CCl4, and CHCl3 solutions is presented. The calculations of free energies indicate a significant role of the solvent in determining the conformations of the base-pair complexes. The application of the continuum method yields preferred conformations in good agreement with experiment. Results of the calculations with this method emphasize the importance of both the electrostatic interactions between the two bases in a complex, and the dipolar interaction of the complex with the entire medium. In calculations with the solvation shell method, the last term, i.e., dipolar interaction of the complex with the entire medium, was added. With this modification the prediction of the solvation shell model agrees both with the continuum model and with experiment, i.e., in water the stacked conformation of the bases is preferred.

Analysis of star pair latitudes

Star pair latitude observations form the basis for the pole positions reported by the International Polar Motion Service (IMPS). The IPMS processes these observations to produce a mean pole position. However, the time series of observations contains high-frequency information which is lost in the calculation of the mean pole. In this study, 2931 star pair observations are analyzed. A possible large excitation at one cycle per solar day is observed. The average power level in the frequency band of the tesseral tides is seen to be high, although the peaks cannot be conclusively identified as tidal phenomena.

Electron-positron pair production in hot unsaturated Compton accretion models around black holes

Electron-positron pairs photoproduced in conventional unsaturated Compton disk and spherical accretion models with electron temperature greater than 10 to the 9 K are found to dominate over the background electrons. This results in an equilibrium temperature lower than previously found and severely constrains the model parameters in some cases. Electron-positron pair production does not alleviate the thermal instability of the optically thin two-temperature disk model.

The generation of electron hole pairs in very thin solar cells possessing an optical back-surface reflector

It is pointed out that very thin solar cells (1 micron thick or less) as, for example, amorphous silicon or cadmium sulfide cells, possessing a back surface reflector should be regarded as Fabry-Perot cavities as far as the generation of electron-hole pairs by light is concerned. The generation rate of electron-hole pairs as a function of distance from the front surface exhibits characteristic interference patterns which are not negligible and must be accounted for in an analysis of the performance of such a cell.

VLBI and X-ray observations of compact nuclei in pairs of galaxies

Five pairs of isolated pairs of galaxies with radio sources from the sample of Stocke et al. (1978) were observed with a three-element VLBI array operating at 4996 MHz. Parsec-scale components were detected in NGC 3894, Arp 102, and NGC 6500. Arp 102B was found to be a strong X-ray source with a luminosity in the 0.5-4.5 keV band of about 10 to the 43rd ergs/sec. Arp 102B was also found to be an elliptical galaxy for which no emission lines have been reported, and was the only source in the sample which appeared unresolved on the milli-arcsec scale, indicating that it may be related to BL Lac type objects.

Submilliarcsecond VLBI Using Compact Close Pairs of Radio Sources: Error Analysis

The potential accuracy attainable for (delta) VLBI positional measurements (submilliarc second level) is reached by simultaneously observing pairs of compact radio sources whose angular separation are smaller than the beamwidth of each antenna. Simultaneous (delta) VLBI (SVLBI) enables significant cancellation of measurement errors. Solar plasma is the dominant fluctuating error source in SVLBI positional measurements since there is enhanced cancellation of the troposphere and ionosphere, and complete cancellation of oscillator instabilities. Of the nonfluctuating error sources, errors due to universal time predominate. By performing SVLBI experiments over several years with many different close pairs of radio sources, limits can be placed on reference frame stability. Intrinsic properties of the sources, such as source structure and proper motion, will limit measurements. The SVLBI differential phase and corruptive noise sources will be discussed here along with estimated results.

Electron-positron pair production by ultrarelativistic electrons in a soft photon field

The fully differential cross section for photon-electron pair production is integrated numerically over phase space. Results are obtained for the astrophysically interesting case in which the interaction between an ultrarelativistic electron and a soft photon results in electron-positron pair production. The positron spectrum is a function of the energies of both the photon and the electron, as well as the angle of interaction. It is found that the energy at which the positron distribution peaks is inversely proportional to the photon energy and independent of the electron energy. The positron spectrum is integrated once more over initial electron energies for a power-law energy distribution of primary electrons. The same procedure is repeated for the recoil particle; it is shown that the peak of the recoil energy distribution depends linearly on the energy of the primary electron. Finally, semianalytical expressions are obtained for the energy losses of the primary electrons.
