A xenon ion propulsion module for enhanced spacecraft capability

Design, development and preliminary testing of a two-engine xenon ion propulsion module for early flight evaluation is described. Extensive use is made of flight spare propellant system components and also engineering model 30-cm ion engines and assemblies originally developed for the Solar Electric Propulsion System program. Significant design features include a redundant propellant feed system that incorporates a novel gas pulse assembly for rapid and completely reliable engine startup, a central neutralizer subsystem with dual neutralizers for redundancy, and major ion engine performance improvements resulting in a nearly doubling of the 30-cm engine thrust in addition to operating on xenon rather than mercury propellant. At a module input power of 10.0 kw, maximum thrust and specific impulse are projected to be 0.4 N and 3,500 sec. respectively, for a total module efficiency of 67 percent. Total mass of the xenon ion module, including the propellant tank, is only 70.2 kg. The technical approaches taken towards developing and integrating the subsystems comprising this ion propulsion module are presented and discussed in detail.

Progress in cartography, EROS program

During the past 7 years the Interior Department EROS (Earth Resources Observation Systems) program with NASA sponsorship has conducted cartographic research based on high altitude aerial and space photographs. The research has centered on the direct use of the image and its transformation into so-called photo or image maps. Today the cartographers of the Geological Survey have a real opportunity for making maps from data supplied by ERTS-1 which is dedicated to remote sensing of the earth.

A system for the input and storage of data in the Besm-6 digital computer

Computer programs used for the decoding and storage of large volumes of data on the the BESM-6 computer are described. The following factors are discussed: the programming control language allows the programs to be run as part of a modular programming system used in data processing; data control is executed in a hierarchically built file on magnetic tape with sequential index storage; and the programs are not dependent on the structure of the data.

NASA's Human Lunar Landing Strategy

In early 2020, NASA's Human Landing System Program made awards to a set of American companies to compete for the design, delivery and demonstration of an integrated human landing system to land the next Americans near the South Pole of the Moon by 2024. Awards were made utilizing the NextSTEP Broad Agency Announcement procurement mechanism and kicked off a seven-month Certification Baseline Review, leading up to a Continuation Review and possible down-select by NASA at the end of 2020. This paper discusses the work that has been done thus far for the rapid development of a human landing system to safely carry the first woman and the next man to the lunar surface. It will also provide a preview of the work that remains ahead for the program. Keywords: Artemis, Human Landing System, Mars, Moon, Propulsion

The CELSS research program - A brief review of recent activities

The history of the Controlled Ecological Life Support System program, initiated by NASA in the late 1970s to explore the use of bioregenerative methods of life support, is reviewed. The project focused on examining the process involved in converting inorganic minerals and gases into life support materials using sunlight as the primary energy source. The research, planning, and technological development required by the CELSS program and conducted at NASA field centers, at various universities, and by commercial organizations are reviewed. Research activities at universities have focused upon exploring methods of reducing the size of the system, reducing system power requirements, understanding issues that are associated with its long-term stability, and identifying new technologies that might be useful in improving its efficiency. Research activities at Ames research center have focused on the use of common duckweed as a high biomass-producing plant, which is high in protein and on waste processing.

A computer program to evaluate optical systems

A computer program is used to evaluate a 25.4 cm X-ray telescope at a field angle of 20 minutes of arc by geometrical analysis. The object is regarded as a point source of electromagnetic radiation, and the optical surfaces are treated as boundary conditions in the solution of the electromagnetic wave propagation equation. The electric field distribution is then determined in the region of the image and the intensity distribution inferred. A comparison of wave analysis results and photographs taken through the telescope shows excellent agreement.

Overview of the Telescience Testbed Program

The NASA's Telescience Testbed Program (TTP) conducted by the Ames Research Center is described with particular attention to the objectives, the approach used to achieve these objectives, and the expected benefits of the program. The goal of the TTP is to gain operational experience for the Space Station Freedom and the Earth Observing System programs, using ground testbeds, and to define the information and communication systems requirements for the development and operation of these programs. The results of TTP are expected to include the requirements for the remote coaching, command and control, monitoring and maintenance, payload design, and operations management. In addition, requirements for technologies such as workstations, software, video, automation, data management, and networking will be defined.

Swift/T Guide

Swift/T is a hierarchical, parallel programming system that allows you to rapidly develop many-task workflows that call into sequential code concurrently. It is implemented with a compiler and runtime system; the Swift/Turbine Compiler (STC) allows you to write Swift programs and run them using Turbine. At runtime, Swift/T programs are MPI programs capable of utilizing very large supercomputers.

Space Station tethered waste disposal

The Shuttle Transportation System (STS) launches more payload to the Space Station than can be returned creating an accumulation of waste. Several methods of deorbiting the waste are compared including an OMV, solid rocket motors, and a tether system. The use of tethers is shown to offer the unique potential of having a net savings in STS launch requirement. Tether technology is being developed which can satisfy the deorbit requirements but additional effort is required in waste processing, packaging, and container design. The first step in developing this capability is already underway in the Small Expendable Deployer System program. A developmental flight test of a tether initiated recovery system is seen as the second step in the evolution of this capability.

Collaborative Systems Thinking: A Response to the Problems Faced by Systems Engineering's 'Middle Tier'

Experienced systems engineers are adept at more than implementing systems engineering processes: they utilize systems thinking to solve complex engineering problems. Within the space industry demographics and economic pressures are reducing the number of experienced systems engineers that will be available in the future. Collaborative systems thinking within systems engineering teams is proposed as a way to integrate systems engineers of various experience levels to handle complex systems engineering challenges. This paper uses the GOES-R Program Systems Engineering team to illustrate the enablers and barriers to team level systems thinking and to identify ways in which performance could be improved. Ways NASA could expand its engineering training to promote team-level systems thinking are proposed.

Concept of Operation for Tactical Separation Assurance in Super-Density Operations

The Airspace Systems Program is committed to supporting the Next Generation Air Transportation System through research and development in select areas. One such area, referred to as Super Density Operations, is conducting research to develop technologies that will safely increase the throughput in busy terminal area environments. The purpose of this document is to develop a Concept of Operations for the Tactical Separation Assurance function, one of the functions included in Super Density Operations. A functional description of the technologies required for Super Density Operations is presented followed by a more detail description of the Tactical Separation Assurance function. Two story boards are presented to illustrate the operational use of the Tactical Separation Assurance function under different situations. The last section proposes a pathway to implementing the Tactical Separation Assurance function.

Development of communications analysis techniques

Major results from the frequency analysis of system program (FASP) are reported. The FASP procedure was designed to analyze or design linear dynamic systems, but can be used to solve any problem that can be described by a system of linear time invariant differential equations. The program also shows plots of performance changes as design parameters are adjusted. Experimental results on narrowband FM distortion are also reported.
