Dual-Phase Malicious User Detection Scheme for IM-OFDMA Systems Using IQ Imbalance

Physical-layer security techniques have contributed to the achievement of various security objectives in an efficient and lightweight manner. Thus, these techniques have been widely considered for limited-resource networks such as Internet of Things networks. Among the different security objectives, malicious user detection by exploiting physical-layer parameters has demonstrated efficient performance. In this work, malicious user detection in the recently proposed index modulation-based orthogonal frequency division multiple access (IM-OFDMA) is addressed. The proposed malicious user detection scheme exploits the hardware impairments, especially the in-phase and quadrature imbalance parameters, for both legitimate and malicious users to design a dual-phase efficient detection scheme. The proposed scheme accounts for the special characteristics of IM-OFDMA transmission that are different from other multiple-access techniques. The performance of the proposed scheme was evaluated considering detection probability and false alarm probability performance metrics. Moreover, closed-form expressions of these metrics were derived for both phases and were validated by Monte Carlo simulation results under different configurations of IM-OFDMA systems.

Reduced-action-integral approach for photon-photon interactions in vacuum

Electromagnetic waves propagating through vacuum can polarize virtual electron–positron pairs; this polarization, in turn, nonlinearly modifies their propagation. A semi-classical nonlinear wave equation describing the propagation is derived from the Euler–Heisenberg Lagrangian density, which captures vacuum polarization effects up to the one-loop level. In this article, we present a reduced-actionintegral approach that enables rapid modeling of nonlinear phenomena arising from the Euler– Heisenberg Lagrangian. Application of the variational principle to the reduced action provides equations of motion for familiar light-pulse parameters, such as spot size, phase, polarization, and phase-front curvature, without requiring full-field simulations. Three examples demonstrate the utility of the approach: phase modulation, birefringence, and frequency mixing.

A Two-Stage Current Limiting Control Strategy for Direct-Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters

This paper presents a two-stage current limiting control strategy with fault ride-through capability for the direct-droop-controlled grid-forming (GFM) inverters. The proposed approach comprises Stage 1 and Stage 2 current limiting controls. During faults, Stage 1 current limiting control instantly clamps the inverter output current magnitude to its maximum transient limit by blocking the switching pulses to the insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) with the help of a hysteresis loop control, and Stage 2 current limiting control limits the inverter output current magnitude to its steady-state limit by regulating the amplitude and frequency of the modulating waveform utilizing the active and reactive current limiting control loops. By implementing the current limiting actions in two stages, this approach can effectively limit the over-current within a few cycles after the fault occurrence and ensure synchronism to the grid after long-term fault events. The efficacy of the proposed control approach is validated through electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation results conducted on a single GFM inverter-based test system and the IEEE 39-bus test system with multiple GFM inverters in the PSCAD platform.

Radio Frequency Field Programable Gate Array Implementation of Reflectometry Cable Monitoring

PNNL has developed an innovative cable testing system that leverages the Xilinx RF System-on-Chip (RFSoC) technology to create a more flexible and capable measurement tool than traditional approaches. The architecture is designed on the ZCU111 development board and takes advantage of the high-speed digital to analog converters (DAC) and analog to digital converters (ADC) to generate and capture digitally synthesized waveforms. The platform allows engineers to easily adjust power, frequency, duration and modulation on the fly rather than being locked into fixed hardware configurations

Quiet-time observation of a coherent compressional Pc-4 micropulsation at synchronous altitude

During a magnetically quiet interval the magnetic-field intensity and energetic electron fluxes at ATS 1 exhibited coherent modulations having a frequency of 33.8 cph and a duration of approximately 40 oscillations. The electron fluxes and the magnetic field oscillated in phase. The field perturbation reached 8 jamma (peak to peak) in the direction of the unperturbed geomagnetic field. The transverse component of the field perturbation was practically zero. The characteristics of the observed oscillations appear compatible with those of a compressional excitation of the outer magnetosphere. The substantially radial normal mode is perhaps driven by a bounce-resonant interaction with the 15-keV protons that populate the quiet-day ring current.

Analytic prediction of dynamic stall characteristics.

A new approach is presented for solving the problem of predicting dynamic stall characteristics. In this approach, the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics are related theoretically to static aerodynamic characteristics which are readily available for a great number of airfoil shapes. Using these static experimental data as an input, the developed analytical method predicts dynamic stall characteristics that are in good agreement with available experimental data. The analysis is also extended to include frequency and amplitude modulation effects.

Miniature multichannel biotelemeter system

A miniature multichannel biotelemeter system is described. The system includes a transmitter where signals from different sources are sampled to produce a wavetrain of pulses. The transmitter also separates signals by sync pulses. The pulses amplitude modulate a radio frequency carrier which is received at a receiver unit. There the sync pulses are detected by a demultiplexer which routes the pulses from each different source to a separate output channel where the pulses are used to reconstruct the signals from the particular source.

Ac electronic tunneling at optical frequencies

Rectification characteristics of non-superconducting metal-barrier-metal junctions deduced from electronic tunneling have been observed experimentally for optical frequency irradiation of the junction. The results provide verification of optical frequency Fermi level modulation and electronic tunneling current modulation.

Continuously varying skin potentials elicited by sinusoidally varying electric shock potentials

An investigation was carried out to determine whether a form of quasi-linear systems analysis can be applied to electrodormal responses to yield new insights into the nature of the response mechanisms and their interrelationships. The response investigated was the electrodermal response (galvanic skin potential, GSP) as elicited by an electric shock stimulus applied to the skin. The response subsequent to this stimulation was examined and its characteristics measured. A series of experimental runs on three Ss was accomplished, using sinusoidal modulation envelopes of frequencies. Results showed that it was possible to drive the GSP and to achieve relatively high coherence between the driving frequency and the response itself. The analysis was limited to Fourier analysis of the response in order to determine the relative energies at the driving frequency and at successive harmonics of that driving frequency, and correlational analysis in order to determine the degree of linear relationship between the driving frequency and the driven response.

Hyperfine spectroscopy using transverse modulated optical pumping

Population inversion is observed between the field-independent ground hyperfine states of Rb-87 when using an optical pumping technique which is applicable to a large number of species of atoms and ions. Inversion occurs upon a coherent transfer of angular momentum to the Rb-87 spin system from circularly polarized light propagating in a transverse direction to a magnetic field. Coherence is established by modulating, at certain frequencies, the light intensity or magnetic-field strength.

Significant initial results from the environmental measurements experiment on ATS-6

The Applications Technology Satellite (ATS-6), launched into synchronous orbit on 30 May 1974, carried a set of six particle detectors and a triaxial fluxgate magnetometer. The particle detectors were able to determine the ion and electron distribution functions from 1 to greater than 10 to the 8th power eV. It was found that the magnetic field is weaker and more tilted than predicted by models which neglect internal plasma and that there is a seasonal dependence to the magnitude and tilt. ATS-6 magnetic field measurements showed the effects of field-aligned currents associated with substorms, and large fluxes of field-aligned particles were observed with the particle detectors. Encounters with the plasmasphere revealed the existence of warm plasma with temperatures up to 30 eV. A variety of correlated waves in both the particles and fields were observed: pulsation continuous oscillations, seen predominantly in the plasmasphere bulge; ultralow frequency (ULF) standing waves; ring current proton ULF waves; and low frequency waves that modulate the energetic electrons. In additon, large scale waves on the energetic-ion-trapping boundary were observed, and the intensity of energetic electrons was modulated in association with the passage of sector boundaries of the interplanetary magnetic field.

Recent developments and applications with gas cell correlation spectrometer

Gaspec, a gas filter correlation spectrometer, is described. Gaspec is a dual-gas three-channel instrument using two detectors which receive amplitude-shared source signals modulated at the frequency of the chopper. Several units for operation around the 3-5 micron and the 8-15 micron region have been constructed, and gases such as CO2, CO, CH4, HCl, NO, and hydrazines can be detected. Advantages of Gaspec are considered with reference to improvements developed for the basic Cospec (gas cell correlation spectrometer) instrument.

Since circuit responds only to slow frequency drifts and modulation signal has high-pass characteristics, AFC does not interfere with normal FM operation. An error budget for the JPL hydrogen maser receiver

The hydrogen maser receiver is a synthesizer that converts the maser signal, at about 1420 MHz, to a set of output signals at 100, 20, 10, 5, 1, and 0.1 MHz. The contribution of the receiver and its component modules to the frequency instability and phase noise of each of its outputs is estimated, and these results are compared to published measurements of the 100-MHz output of the frequency standard, which consists of a maser plus its receiver. One can then assess how much the receiver degrades the performance of the frequency standard.

A single-frequency multitransmitter telemetry technique

A telemetry technique for a special data collection system being developed for use on general aviation aircraft involved in aeronautical research programs is described. The system consists of a number of sensor-transmitter units at different locations on the aircraft, with individual signal conditioning and logic, which send sampled data signals to a single receiver in the airplane. The transmitters operate independently on the same frequency and are not synchronized to the receiver. The problem of reception of multiple samples simultaneously is treated by discarding such samples. An overlap detection technique for the frequency shift keyed modulation system is described. The amount of predicted data loss due to overlap is presented and compared with results obtained with a circuit implementation; the effects of discarded data on accuracy is discussed.

Millimeter-wave studies of the surfaces of Mercury and Mars and the atmosphere of Venus

Disk average brightness temperatures of Mercury were obtained using a 4.6 m radio telescopes. The data was searched for periodicities which correlate with phase angle, hermocentric longitude and beat frequencies produced by modulations of various celestial mechanical parameters. Spectral line observations were made of Venus with the NRAO 11 m radio telescope. The total CO content and the CO vertical profile, and their variability were observed. Large scale thermophysical properties of the surface of Mars were studied.
