Input-output oriented computation algorithms for the control of large flexible structures

An overview is given of work in progress aimed at developing computational algorithms addressing two important aspects in the control of large flexible space structures; namely, the selection and placement of sensors and actuators, and the resulting multivariable control law design problem. The issue of sensor/actuator set selection is particularly crucial to obtaining a satisfactory control design, as clearly a poor choice will inherently limit the degree to which good control can be achieved. With regard to control law design, the researchers are driven by concerns stemming from the practical issues associated with eventual implementation of multivariable control laws, such as reliability, limit protection, multimode operation, sampling rate selection, processor throughput, etc. Naturally, the burden imposed by dealing with these aspects of the problem can be reduced by ensuring that the complexity of the compensator is minimized. Our approach to these problems is based on extensions to input/output oriented techniques that have proven useful in the design of multivariable control systems for aircraft engines. In particular, researchers are exploring the use of relative gain analysis and the condition number as a means of quantifying the process of sensor/actuator selection and placement for shape control of a large space platform.

The realization of input-output maps using bialgebras

The theory of bialgebras is used to prove a state space realization theorem for input/output maps of dynamical systems. This approach allows for the consideration of the classical results of Fliess and more recent results on realizations involving families of trees. Two examples of applications of the theorum are given.

Extensions of output variance constrained controllers to hard constraints

Covariance Controllers assign specified matrix values to the state covariance. A number of robustness results are directly related to the covariance matrix. The conservatism in known upperbounds on the H infinity, L infinity, and L (sub 2) norms for stability and disturbance robustness of linear uncertain systems using covariance controllers is illustrated with examples. These results are illustrated for continuous and discrete time systems. **** ONLY 2 BLOCK MARKERS FOUND -- RETRY *****

Single-ended output GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well laser with a dry-etched corner reflector

GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well lasers with integrated corner reflectors have been fabricated using chemically assisted ion beam etching. The air-GaAs interface is internally totally reflecting, and no coherent radiation is transmitted through the corner reflector. The corner reflector laser was compared with a conventional Fabry-Perot laser cleaved from the same wafer. An 11-percent reduction in threshold current and a reduction of the far-field angle from 4.4 deg to 0.7 deg was measured.

Balanced input-output assignment

Actuator/sensor locations and balanced representations of linear systems are considered for a given set of controllability and observability grammians. The case of equally controlled and observed states is given special attention. The assignability of grammians is examined, and the conditions for their existence are presented, along with several algorithms for their determination. Although an arbitrary positive semidefinite matrix is not always assignable, the identity grammian is shown to be always assignable. The results are extended to the case of flexible structures.

Long-term microwave power drift of a cesium frequency standard and its effect on output frequency

It has been shown that the long-term frequency stability of a cesium (Cs) frequency standard is affected by variations in the standard's internal microwave power source. Studies were performed on a commercial Cs frequency standard for a period of 20 days, to determine the stability of its microwave power source. The results were then analyzed statistically, and the effects of microwave power drift on the standard's frequency stability were calculated.

Use of microgravity to improve the efficiency and power output of Nd-doped laser glasses

The objectives of this research are to: (1) obtain further evidence and understand the science for the reported improvement in chemical homogeneity in glasses prepared in microgravity; and (2) study the feasibility of improving the optical and fluorescence properties, particularly, the limit for Nd(+3) concentration quenching and threshold energy for laser action for laser glasses prepared in microgravity. Attention was directed to ground based investigation whose primary purpose was to determine the suitability and conditions for processing these laser glasses in space. This report describes that the scientific and technical information required for planning flight experiments for these glasses have been obtained, and the preparation for handling and analyzing post flight samples have also been taken. Instruments required for measuring the fluorescence properties of interest have been constructed. The optical and fluorescence properties for the glasses have been measured and made available for comparative property analysis.

A 23.2:1 ratio, 300-watt, 26 N-m output torque, planetary roller-gear robotic transmission: Design and evaluation

The design philosophy and measurements performed on a new roller-gear transmission prototype for a robotic manipulator are described. The design incorporates smooth rollers in a planetary configuration integrated with conventional toothed gears. The rollers were designed to handle low torque with low backlash and friction while the complementary gears support higher torques and prevent accumulated creep or slip of the rollers. The introduction of gears with finite numbers of teeth to function in parallel with the rollers imposes severe limits on available designs. Solutions for two-planet row designs are discussed. A two-planet row, four-planet design was conceived, fabricated, and tested. Detailed calculations of cluster geometry, gear stresses, and gear geometry are given. Measurement data reported here include transmission linearity, static and dynamic friction, inertia, backlash, stiffness, and forward and reverse efficiency. Initial test results are reported describing performance of the transmission in a servomechanism with torque feedback.

Mixed H(2)/H(sub infinity): Control with output feedback compensators using parameter optimization

Among the many possible norm-based optimization methods, the concept of H-infinity optimal control has gained enormous attention in the past few years. Here the H-infinity framework, based on the Small Gain Theorem and the Youla Parameterization, effectively treats system uncertainties in the control law synthesis. A design approach involving a mixed H(sub 2)/H-infinity norm strives to combine the advantages of both methods. This advantage motivates researchers toward finding solutions to the mixed H(sub 2)/H-infinity control problem. The approach developed in this research is based on a finite time cost functional that depicts an H-infinity bound control problem in a H(sub 2)-optimization setting. The goal is to define a time-domain cost function that optimizes the H(sub 2)-norm of a system with an H-infinity-constraint function.

Dust and gas contributions to the energy output of SN 1987A on day 1153

SN 1987A spectra at 16-30 microns taken on days 1152 and 1154 after core collapse are presented. The observations are used to derive the mass of radiating Fe II in the ejecta, the mass and temperature of the dust that gives rise to the continuum emission, and the bolometric luminosity of the SN. The observed luminosity requires that the Co-57/Co-56 mass production rate be enhanced by a factor of (4.5 +/- 1.6) compared to its solar value, if 0.0001 solar mass of Ti-44 were produced in the ejecta.

High-efficiency, high-output-power antiguide laser diode arrays

Antiguide laser arrays have been fabricated and operated up to peak pulsed powers of 7.7 W in a beam with a full-width at half-maximum in the main lobe of 0.7 deg. Up to 0.7 W of continuous wave power is emitted into a radiation pattern 2.5 times the diffraction limit. By varying the temperature of the array to vary the operating wavelength of the device, the threshold gain condition of the array modes is altered, allowing thermal tuning of the far field of the device.

Flight-determined stability analysis of multiple-input-multiple-output control systems

Singular value analysis can give conservative stability margin results. Applying structure to the uncertainty can reduce this conservatism. This paper presents flight-determined stability margins for the X-29A lateral-directional, multiloop control system. These margins are compared with the predicted unscaled singular values and scaled structured singular values. The algorithm was further evaluated with flight data by changing the roll-rate-to-aileron-command-feedback gain by +/- 20 percent. Also presented are the minimum eigenvalues of the return difference matrix which bound the singular values. Extracting multiloop singular values from flight data and analyzing the feedback gain variations validates this technique as a measure of robustness. This analysis can be used for near-real-time flight monitoring and safety testing.
