Collaborative Research: Explosive reconnection in relativistic magnetically-dominated plasmas

Magnetic fields can be the dominant component of astrophysical plasmas, so that the magnetic energy density might exceed even the rest-mass energy density of matter. In this extreme (and largely unexplored) regime the magnetic field controls the overall plasma evolution, dissipation, and acceleration of non-thermal particles. This plasma regime, applicable to a variety of astrophysical sources --- magnetars, pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), jets of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and Gamma-Ray Bursters (GRBs) --- is dramatically different from laboratory plasmas, the magnetospheres of planets, and the interplanetary plasma. Relativistic astrophysical sources then provide an unique opportunity to study the fundamental plasma physics of magnetically-dominated plasmas; a novel and quickly evolving field of theoretical research which, by investigating energy conversion and particle energization processes in plasmas, is of vital importance to the Fusion Energy Sciences DoE program.

IC Project: The Role of Compressibility in Regulating Magnetic Energy Conversion in Reconnection Processes with Turbulence and Implications for Particle Transport and Energization

Diagnostics for the contribution of different regions in low-energy injection: a) Distribution function for the time duration of E > B particles within E > B regions. The estimated time limits for achieving injection are labeled; b) Distribution of energy gain during injection (for E > B particles) for E > B regions (blue), before E > B crossing (red), and outside E > B regions after the first crossing (black); c) Spectra for self-consistent particles (blue), test-particles that do not see electric fields in E > B regions (red) and test-particles with a resetting energy approach (green).

Collaborative Research: Particle Simulation of Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection Under Finite Guide Field (Final Technical Report)

The project investigated 3-D linear instabilities of Harris current sheet under a realistic ion-to-electron mass ratio and a finite guide field. The excitation and 3-D properties of lower hybrid drift instability (LHDI), along with two new instabilities were demonstrated. The report presents the nonlinear properties of current sheet instabilities by employing Gyrokinetic electron and Fully kinetic ion (GeFi) particle simulation code. The GeFi simulation results are compared with fully kinetic PIC simulations.

The Radiative Magneto-Hydrodynamics of Colliding Flow: Instabilities, Reconnection and Exoplanet Atmosphere Connections

Hypersonic flows of magnetized plasmas naturally produce strong shocks when obstructions or self‐interactions (flow collisions) occur. Such complex flows occur in a wide variety of HEDP settings such as Z‐pinches and laser driven implosion experiments that include magnetic fields via explosive Helmholtz coils (MIFEDS) When thermal energy behind the shocks can be lost to optically thin radiation, the flow dynamics becomes even more complex, admitting a range of new instabilities such as the Nonlinear Thin Shell Instability (NTSI). Because of their inherent non‐ linearity, multi‐dimensionality and time‐dependence (i.e. turbulence), the ability to articulate the underlying physics of colliding hypersonic magnetized flows represents a significant frontier in HEDP studies. The addition of radiative cooling to these flows propels the study even further into the domain of extreme plasma physics. Exploration of these forms of HED plasmas is of interest to basic plasma physics as well as of interest for their application to Inertial Confinement Fusion.
