Automated design and optimization of flexible booster autopilots via linear programming. Volume 2: User's manual

COEBRA, the Computerized Optimization of Elastic Booster Autopilots, is an autopilot design program. The bulk of the design criteria is presented in the form of minimum allowed gain/phase stability margins. COEBRA has two optimization phases: (1) a phase to maximize stability margins; and (2) a phase to optimize structural bending moment load relief capability in the presence of minimum requirements on gain/phase stability margins.

Hypersonic wing test structure design, analysis, and fabrication

An investigation to provide the analyses, data, and hardware required to experimentally validate the beaded panel concept and demonstrate its usefulness as a basis for design of a Hypersonic Research Airplane (HRA) wing is reported. Combinations of the beaded panel structure, heat shields, channel caps and corrugated webs for ribs and spars were analyzed for the wing of a specified HRA to operate at Mach 8 with a lifespan of 150 flights. Detailed analyses were conducted in accordance with established design criteria and included aerodynamic heating and load predictions, transient structural thermal calculations, extensive NASTRAN computer modeling, and structural optimization. Optimum beaded panel tests at 922 K (1200 F) were performed to verify panel performance. Close agreement of predicted and actual critical loads permitted use of design procedures and equations for the beaded panel concept without modification.

Coupled rotor/airframe vibration prediction methods

The problems of airframe structural dynamic representation and effects of coupled rotor/airframe vibration are discussed. Several finite element computer programs (including NASTRAN) and methods for idealization and computation of airframe natural modes and frequencies and forced response are reviewed. Methods for obtaining a simultaneous rotor and fuselage vibratory response, determining effectiveness of vibration control devices, and energy methods for structural optimization are also discussed. Application of these methods is shown for the vibration prediction of the model 347 helicopter.

Design of a Mars entry 'aeroshell'

The external shell of the Project Viking capsule, which will provide atmospheric deceleration for the 1976 landing of an unmanned spacecraft on the surface of Mars, is a wide-angle, stiffened cone subject to buckling under entry aerodynamic pressure. Complex, highly optimized structural prototype and flight designs were evolved through the application of relatively advanced buckling analysis methodology. Both designs were evaluated through tests and analysis with improved shell-of-revolution computer programs. Deviations between the analyses and experiments were resolved only by modeling the thin-walled rings as shell branches. The results illustrate the great complexity of shell behavior and the designer's need for reliable analysis tools capable of representing detailed structural behavior with greater accuracy than is current practice.

Computer modeling of a two-junction, monolithic cascade solar cell

The theory and design criteria for monolithic, two-junction cascade solar cells are described. The departure from the conventional solar cell analytical method and the reasons for using the integral form of the continuity equations are briefly discussed. The results of design optimization are presented. The energy conversion efficiency that is predicted for the optimized structure is greater than 30% at 300 K, AMO and one sun. The analytical method predicts device performance characteristics as a function of temperature. The range is restricted to 300 to 600 K. While the analysis is capable of determining most of the physical processes occurring in each of the individual layers, only the more significant device performance characteristics are presented.

Experimental measurement of passive material and structural damping for flexible space structures

Among the design objectives for large space structures are the maintenance of tight dimensional tolerance and the reduction of settling time after disturbance input. Two options are under consideration for the design of flexible structures to meet these objectives, including an active control option and a passive control option. In connection with both options, it is necessary to include material and structural damping in the design. A description is presented of the results of an experimental investigation of the damping of metallic and fibrous composite materials, taking into account also the analytical modeling and experimental verification of frictional damping schemes. To demonstrate how material and frictional damping can be combined, a simple structural optimization is performed, indicating the potential for significant savings in mass by the addition of frictional dampers.

Modified SUMT for structural synthesis

The concepts of the singular perturbation theory are employed to modify the SUMT (Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique) algorithm of Fiacco-McCormick (1968) in order to make it more robust and reliable. The algorithm, which uses a sequence of penalty parameters to convert a constrained problem into a sequence of unconstrained problems, suffers from the need to minimize an ill-conditioned penalty function. By using the modified SUMT algorithm on two different structural optimization problems, it is shown that the singular perturbation SUMT easily converges to accurate solutions.

An optimal control approach to the design of moving flight simulators

An abstract flight simulator design problem is formulated in the form of an optimal control problem, which is solved for the linear-quadratic-Gaussian special case using a mathematical model of the vestibular organs. The optimization criterion used is the mean-square difference between the physiological outputs of the vestibular organs of the pilot in the aircraft and the pilot in the simulator. The dynamical equations are linearized, and the output signal is modeled as a random process with rational power spectral density. The method described yields the optimal structure of the simulator's motion generator, or 'washout filter'. A two-degree-of-freedom flight simulator design, including single output simulations, is presented.

Robust penalty method for structural synthesis

The Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique (SUMT) offers an easy way of solving nonlinearly constrained problems. However, this algorithm frequently suffers from the need to minimize an ill-conditioned penalty function. An ill-conditioned minimization problem can be solved very effectively by posing the problem as one of integrating a system of stiff differential equations utilizing concepts from singular perturbation theory. This paper evaluates the robustness and the reliability of such a singular perturbation based SUMT algorithm on two different problems of structural optimization of widely separated scales. The report concludes that whereas conventional SUMT can be bogged down by frequent ill-conditioning, especially in large scale problems, the singular perturbation SUMT has no such difficulty in converging to very accurate solutions.

Structural design of a vertical antenna boresight 18.3 by 18.3-m planar near-field antenna measurement system

A large very precise near-field planar scanner was proposed for NASA Lewis Research Center. This scanner would permit near-field measurements over a horizontal scan plane measuring 18.3 m by 18.3 m. Large aperture antennas mounted with antenna boresight vertical could be tested up to 60 GHz. When such a large near field scanner is used for pattern testing, the antenna or antenna system under test does not have to be moved. Hence, such antennas and antenna systems can be positioned and supported to simulate configuration in zero g. Thus, very large and heavy machinery that would be needed to accurately move the antennas are avoided. A preliminary investigation was undertaken to address the mechanical design of such a challenging near-field antenna scanner. The configuration, structural design and results of a parametric NASTRAN structural optimization analysis are contained. Further, the resulting design was dynamically analyzed in order to provide resonant frequency information to the scanner mechanical drive system designers. If other large near field scanners of comparable dimensions are to be constructed, the information can be used for design optimization of these also.

Use of optimum stiffness tailoring to improve the compressive strength of composite plates with holes

A structural optimization procedure is used to tailor the cross-sectional stiffness distribution of compression-loaded composite plates with holes. Minimum mass designs are obtained for plates with cross sections consisting of two different balanced symmetric laminates with 0 deg, + or - 45 deg and 90 deg plies. The plate interior region contains the hole and is designed from a softer material system with a higher failure strain than the plate exterior region. All-graphite-epoxy plates and hybrid graphite/glass-epoxy plates were studied. Other designs with different percentages of 0 deg and + or 45 deg plies in the exterior laminate are compared with the optimum designs. Designs with uniform cross-sectional stiffnesses also are compared with the tailored cross-sectional stiffness designs. Specimens of each design were tested to verify the analytical predictions. The results show that cross-sectional stiffness tailoring can increase the compressive strength and decrease the mass of compression-loaded laminated plates with holes.

On the design derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for distributed parameter systems

In this paper, analytic expressions are obtained for the design derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of self-adjoint linear distributed parameter systems. Explicit treatment of boundary conditions is avoided by casting the eigenvalue equation into integral form. Results are expressed in terms of the linear operators defining the eigenvalue problem, and are therefore quite general. Sufficiency conditions appropriate to structural optimization of eigenvalues are obtained.

Parametric study of the aeroelastic stability of a bearingless rotor

A trade study was conducted to illustrate the sensitivity of the aeroelastic stability of a bearingless main rotor to the rotor hub coupling parameters that are available for the designer. The results are presented over the complete range of rotor speed and collective pitch available and the effects on air resonance of the 6 beam installation angles are compared together with the results of offsetting the cuff snubber attachment. The major part of the study was conducted using the FLAIR analysis which incorporates a uniform representation of the flexbeam. Results are also shown for a modified version of FLAIR in which the uniform beam is replaced by a member having the geometric tailoring resulting from structural optimization.

Structural tailoring of SSME turbopump blades (SSME/STAEBL)

Computer structural optimization is applied to the design of Space Shuttle main engine turbopump blades. The optimization is implemented by the program SSME/STAEBL. A general description of this program is given. Design optimization studies for typical blade designs are presented.

Structural design options for the new 34 meter beam waveguide antenna

In addition to the successful network of 34 m High Efficiency antennas recently built by JPL, the Deep Space Network (DSN) is embarking on the construction of a 34 m high performance, research and development antenna with beam waveguide optics at the Venus site. The construction of this antenna presents many engineering challenges in the area of structural, mechanical, RF, and pointing system design. A set of functional and structural design requirements is outlined to guide analysts in the final configuration selection. Five design concepts are presented covering both the conventional center-fed beam optics as well as the nonconventional, by-pass beam configuration. The merits of each concept are discussed with an emphasis on obtaining a homologous design. The preliminary results of structural optimization efforts, currently in progress, are promising, indicating the feasibility of meeting, as a minimum, all X-band (8.4 GHz) requirements, with a goal towards meeting Ka-band (32 GHz) quality performance, at the present budget constraints.
