Estimation of surface insolation using sun-synchronous satellite data

A technique is presented for estimating insolation at the earth's surface using only sun-synchronous satellite data. The technique was tested by comparing the insolation results from year-long satellite data sets with simultaneous ground-measured insolation taken at five continental United States sites. Monthly average insolation values derived from the satellite data showed a standard error of 4.2 W/sq m, or 2.7 percent of the average ground insolation value.

A parameterization for longwave surface radiation from sun-synchronous satellite data

A parameterization is presented for computing downward, upward, and net longwave radiation at the earth's surface using data from NOAA sun-synchronous satellites. The parameterization is applied to satellite soundings for April, 1982 over a large region of the tropical Pacific Ocean. Sensitivity studies were used to estimate the random and systematic errors in computed fluxes due to probable errors in TOVS-derived parameters. It is suggested that large biases in the results due to errors in TOVS-derived parameters may be corrected with data from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project.

Synchronization Technique For Reception Of Coded Data

Shortest sequence of bits likely to be filled with error bursts examined. Algorithm improves synchronization of frames of noisy binary-coded data signals after Viterbi decoding (recovery from "inner" convolutional code used in transmission channel) and before Reed-Solomon or other decoding (recovery from "outer" error-correcting block code). Based on comparisons of sequences of correct and erroneous Viterbi-decoded received bits with known marker sequence denoting beginning of frame of data. Does not require count of number of bits in received sequence disagreeing with corresponding bits in marker sequence.

Frame synchronization for the Galileo code

Results are reported on the performance of the Deep Space Network's frame synchronizer for the (15,1/4) convolutional code after Viterbi decoding. The threshold is found that optimizes the probability of acquiring true sync within four frames using a strategy that requires next frame verification.

A synchronous chopper mechanism for use at cryogenic temperature

A mechanically resonant synchronous chopper mechanism is described for use at cryogenic temperatures. The mechanism is a critical optical component of the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) and has been operating on orbit without incident since Nov. 1989. The requirements, electromechanical design, and testing of the mechanism are described. A description of the problems encountered and solutions implemented during the development of the mechanism is provided. Finally, a modified chopper design, which incorporated lessons learned and that has several advantages over the flight chopper design, is offered.

Time concurrency/phase-time synchronization in digital communications networks

Digital communications networks have the intrinsic capability of time synchronization which makes it possible for networks to supply time signals to some applications and services. A practical estimation method for the time concurrency on terrestrial networks is presented. By using this method, time concurrency capability of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) digital communications network is estimated to be better than 300 ns rms at an advanced level, and 20 ns rms at final level.

Mechanical verification of a schematic Byzantine clock synchronization algorithm

Schneider generalizes a number of protocols for Byzantine fault tolerant clock synchronization and presents a uniform proof for their correctness. The authors present a machine checked proof of this schematic protocol that revises some of the details in Schneider's original analysis. The verification was carried out with the EHDM system developed at the SRI Computer Science Laboratory. The mechanically checked proofs include the verification that the egocentric mean function used in Lamport and Melliar-Smith's Interactive Convergence Algorithm satisfies the requirements of Schneider's protocol.

Synchronized computational architecture for generalized bilateral control of robot arms

A master six degree of freedom Force Reflecting Hand Controller (FRHC) is available at a master site where a received image displays, in essentially real time, a remote robotic manipulator which is being controlled in the corresponding six degree freedom by command signals which are transmitted to the remote site in accordance with the movement of the FRHC at the master site. Software is user-initiated at the master site in order to establish the basic system conditions, and then a physical movement of the FRHC in Cartesean space is reflected at the master site by six absolute numbers that are sensed, translated and computed as a difference signal relative to the earlier position. The change in position is then transmitted in that differential signal form over a high speed synchronized bilateral communication channel which simultaneously returns robot-sensed response information to the master site as forces applied to the FRHC so that the FRHC reflects the feel of what is taking place at the remote site. A system wide clock rate is selected at a sufficiently high rate that the operator at the master site experiences the Force Reflecting operation in real time.

Coverability graphs for a class of synchronously executed unbounded Petri net

After detailing a variant of the concurrent-execution rule for firing of maximal subsets, in which the simultaneous firing of conflicting transitions is prohibited, an algorithm is constructed for generating the coverability graph of a net executed under this synchronous firing rule. The omega insertion criteria in the algorithm are shown to be valid for any net on which the algorithm terminates. It is accordingly shown that the set of nets on which the algorithm terminates includes the 'conflict-free' class.

A synchronous strobed laser light sheet for helicopter model rotor flow visualization

A synchronous, strobed laser light sheet has been developed for use in flow visualization of a helicopter rotor model. The light sheet strobe circuit included selectable blade position, strobe duration, and multiple pulses per revolution for rotors having 2 to 9 blades. The flow was seeded with propylene glycol. Between runs, a calibration grid board was placed in the plane of the laser sheet and recorded with the video camera at the position used to record the flow field. A slip-sync mode permitted slow motion visualization of the flow field over complete rotations of the rotor. The system was used to make two-dimensional flow field cuts of a four-bladed rotor operating at advance ratio of 0.37 at wind tunnel speeds up to 79.25 meters per second (260 feet per second).

Update transport - A new technique for update synchronization in replicated database systems

A fully distributed approach to update synchronization is presented where each site completely executes every update. This approach has several features-higher resiliency to different kinds of failures, higher parallelism, improved response to user requests, and low communication overhead. A fully distributed algorithm for concurrency control obtained by rehashing a previously published semidistributed algorithm into the fully distributed model of update execution is presented. A performance model of replicated database systems is presented and used to study the performance of the proposed algorithm and its semidistributed version. The results of the performance study reveal that the proposed approach can substantially improve the performance at the cost of moderate input/output overhead.

Traveling-wave synchronous coil gun

An outline is presented of the coilgun concept, excitation, switching, brush commutation, power supply, and performance. It is shown that a traveling-wave synchronous coilgun permits independent adjustment of the magnetic field and armature current for high velocity at low armature mass fraction. Magnetic field energy is transferred from the rear of the wave to the front without passing through the power supply. Elaborate switching is required.

Synchronization of the magnetic Nova V1500 Cygni

The study addresses a program of polarimetric monitoring of V1500 Cyg and a detection of spin-down of the magnetic primary star. Data on the spectral shape of polarized cyclotron flux is presented, and a lower limit to the field strength on the magnetic primary star is derived. The implications which the field strength and observed rate of period change have on locking scenarios are discussed, including the likelihood of identifying other AM Her systems in the process of formation. It is noted that two-color polarimetry of V1500 Cyg indicates a polar magnetic-field strength consistent with those measured in the synchronized AM Her variables; however, the symmetry and long-term repeatability of the polarized flux curves indicate that accretion occurs onto large regions of the white-dwarf surface.

Synchronous pumping of picosecond dye laser using high efficiency second harmonic generation from optical fibres

The stable operation of a mode-locked dye laser synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser produced in an Nd codoped germanosilicate optical fiber is reported. The optical fiber preparation technique, which results in a second harmonic conversion efficiency of 2 percent, is described. This optical fiber SHG conversion efficiency is the highest reported to date using a continuous-wave mode-locked laser.

Frame synchronization for a channel with different data rates

In some communication links, different data rates are used at different times on the same channel and each is assigned a separate frame synchronization (sync) marker. The frame search is completed within a finite number of frame intervals once both phase-lock and bit-sync are achieved because the incoming data rate can change. The probability of failure to frame-lock, and an upper bound of probability of false frame-lock in a frame search mode are derived for a communication link with a 10 to the -5th bit error probability. The probability of failure to detect data-rate change and the probability of false detection of data-rate change in a frame-lock mode are discussed. In a frame-lock mode, the probability of failure to detect data-rate change and probability detection of data-rate change an equal to 4.96 x 10 to the -12th. A frame-lock device can be used for the Space Station Freedom Ku-band return link.

Synchronous parallel system for emulation and discrete event simulation

A synchronous parallel system for emulation and discrete event simulation having parallel nodes responds to received messages at each node by generating event objects having individual time stamps, stores only the changes to state variables of the simulation object attributable to the event object, and produces corresponding messages. The system refrains from transmitting the messages and changing the state variables while it determines whether the changes are superseded, and then stores the unchanged state variables in the event object for later restoral to the simulation object if called for. This determination preferably includes sensing the time stamp of each new event object and determining which new event object has the earliest time stamp as the local event horizon, determining the earliest local event horizon of the nodes as the global event horizon, and ignoring the events whose time stamps are less than the global event horizon. Host processing between the system and external terminals enables such a terminal to query, monitor, command or participate with a simulation object during the simulation process.

Synchronization techniques for all digital 16-ary QAM receivers operating over land mobile satellite links

The performance of a low bit rate (64 Kb/s) all digital 16-ary Differentially Encoded Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-DEQAM) demodulator operating over a mobile satellite channel, is considered. The synchronization and detection techniques employed to overcome the Rician channel impairments, are described. The acquisition and steady state performance of this modem, are evaluated by computer simulation over AWGN and RICIAN channels. The results verify the suitability of the 16-DEQAM transmission over slowly faded and/or mildly faded channels.

Node synchronization schemes for the Big Viterbi Decoder

The Big Viterbi Decoder (BVD), currently under development for the DSN, includes three separate algorithms to acquire and maintain node and frame synchronization. The first measures the number of decoded bits between two consecutive renormalization operations (renorm rate), the second detects the presence of the frame marker in the decoded bit stream (bit correlation), while the third searches for an encoded version of the frame marker in the encoded input stream (symbol correlation). A detailed account of the operation is given, as well as performance comparison, of the three methods.
