A programmable computer interface for CAMAC

An interface has been developed for CAMAC instrumentation systems that implements data transfers controlled either by the computer CPU or by an autonomous (data-channel) processor in the interface unit. The data channel processor executes programs stored in the computer memory. These programs consist of standard CAMAC module commands plus special control characters and commands for the processor itself. The interface was built for the PDP-15 computer, which has an 18-bit word structure, but both 18- and 24-bit data transfers can be made. A software system has been written that exploits the many features of the processor.

Remote haze monitoring by satellite: A study to demonstrate the feasibility and determine the optimum method

The author has identified the following significant results. A general purpose flexible computer program for the analysis of ERTS MSS data has been written for the Control Data 7600 computer. By putting all of the analysis operations into a separate subroutine the user may concentrate on the analysis. The problems of getting the information into the computer in convenient format is solved once and need not be tampered with each time a new analysis procedure is desired. The problems of getting information written by the XDS computers in 8 bit byte format into a convenient format for analysis on the 60 bit word format CDC 7600 computer are not trivial. A general purpose program to accomplish this has been written and is available from the investigators upon request.

Design of communication systems using short-constraint-length convolutional codes.

A method is presented for calculating the effect of carrier-phase reference error in a receiver phase-locked loop on bit error rates in convolutionally coded data, for the practical design of systems using short-constraint-length convolutional codes. A set of design curves shows the relation between design bit error rate, uplink carrier tracking loop SNR, downlink total SNR, and downlink modulation index. These curves make possible rapid and simple system optimization.

Performance of correlation receivers in the presence of impulse noise.

An impulse noise model, which assumes that each noise burst contains a randomly weighted version of a basic waveform, is used to derive the performance equations for a correlation receiver. The expected number of bit errors per noise burst is expressed as a function of the average signal energy, signal-set correlation coefficient, bit time, noise-weighting-factor variance and probability density function, and a time range function which depends on the crosscorrelation of the signal-set basis functions and the noise waveform. Unlike the performance results for additive white Gaussian noise, it is shown that the error performance for impulse noise is affected by the choice of signal-set basis function, and that Orthogonal signaling is not equivalent to On-Off signaling with the same average energy. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the correlation-receiver error performance can be improved by inserting a properly specified nonlinear device prior to the receiver input.

The transmission of low frequency medical data using delta modulation techniques.

The transmission of low-frequency medical data using delta modulation techniques is described. The delta modulators are used to distribute the low-frequency data into the passband of the telephone lines. Both adaptive and linear delta modulators are considered. Optimum bit rates to minimize distortion and intersymbol interference are discussed. Vibrocardiographic waves are analyzed as a function of bit rate and delta modulator configuration to determine their reproducibility for medical evaluation.

Pseudorandom noise for telemetry error rate measurement applications and limitations.

A pseudorandom noise (PRN) generator functional design has been developed which is superior to the commercially available instrument in usable bandwidth and in the closeness of fit to the gaussian probability distribution in the 'tails' of the curve. The principal disadvantage of PRN sources for bit error rate (BER) measurements is that the probability distribution is truncated in the tails. This truncation of the probability distribution results in a similar truncation of the BER curve - i.e., there is a minimum BER which can be measured, below which the only possible result is zero. The minimum nonzero BER actually computed with the PRN source developed was 0.00001 with a pseudorandom sequence of 131,071 bits. It is theoretically possible, with a longer sequence, to achieve a minimum BER of 0.000001 with the same design.

Design relationships for holographic memories.

The maximum capacity of a block-oriented, random-access memory is determined primarily by the geometrical parameters of the lenses required to create a Fourier transform of a spatial bit pattern and to image the reconstructed bits onto a photodetector array. Furthermore, the maximum packing density is determined primarily by the same parameters. Several important relationships are developed that are useful in the preliminary design of holographic memories.

Maximum likelihood synchronizer for binary overlapping PCM/NRZ signals.

A maximum likelihood parameter estimation technique for the self bit synchronization problem is investigated. The input sequence to the bit synchronizer is a sequence of binary overlapping PCM/NRZ signal in the presence of white Gaussian noise with zero mean and known variance. The resulting synchronizer consists of matched filters, a transition device and a weighting function. Finally, the performance is examined by Monte Carlo simulations.

Method and apparatus for a single channel digital communications system

A method and apparatus are described for synchronizing a received PCM communications signal without requiring a separate synchronizing channel. The technique provides digital correlation of the received signal with a reference signal, first with its unmodulated subcarrier and then with a bit sync code modulated subcarrier, where the code sequence length is equal in duration to each data bit.

Testing and evaluation of the LES-6 pulsed plasma thruster by means of a torsion pendulum system

Performance characteristics of the LES-6 pulsed plasma thruster over a range of input conditions were investigated by means of a torsion pendulum system. Parameters of particular interest included the impulse bit and time average thrust (and their repeatability), specific impulse, mass ablated per discharge, specific thrust, energy per unit area, efficiency, and variation of performance with ignition command rate. Intermittency of the thruster as affected by input energy and igniter resistance were also investigated. Comparative experimental data correlation with the data presented. The results of these tests indicate that the LES-6 thruster, with some identifiable design improvements, represents an attractive reaction control thruster for attitude contol applications on long-life spacecraft requiring small metered impulse bits for precise pointing control of science instruments.

VHF command system study

Solutions are provided to specific problems arising in the GSFC VHF-PSK and VHF-FSK Command Systems in support of establishment and maintenance of Data Systems Standards. Signal structures which incorporate transmission on the uplink of a clock along with the PSK or FSK data are considered. Strategies are developed for allocating power between the clock and data, and spectral analyses are performed. Bit error probability and other probabilities pertinent to correct transmission of command messages are calculated. Biphase PCM/PM and PCM/FM are considered as candidate modulation techniques on the telemetry downlink, with application to command verification. Comparative performance of PCM/PM and PSK systems is given special attention, including implementation considerations. Gain in bit error performance due to coding is also considered.

Threshold detection in an on-off binary communications channel with atmospheric scintillation

The optimum detection threshold in an on-off binary optical communications system operating in the presence of atmospheric turbulence was investigated assuming a poisson detection process and log normal scintillation. The dependence of the probability of bit error on log amplitude variance and received signal strength was analyzed and semi-emperical relationships to predict the optimum detection threshold derived. On the basis of this analysis a piecewise linear model for an adaptive threshold detection system is presented. Bit error probabilities for non-optimum threshold detection system were also investigated.

Hexagonal multiple phase-and-amplitude-shift-keyed signal sets

Selection of a particular signal set array for a bandwidth-constrained multiple phase-and-amplitude-shift-keyed (MPASK) communication system for a linear additive Gaussian noise channel requires consideration of factors such as average and/or peak power vs symbol error probability, signal amplitude dynamic range, simplicity of generation and detection, and number of bit errors per symbol error (Gray code properties). A simple technique is presented for generating and optimally detecting the honeycomb (hexagonal) signal set, i.e., the signal set that has the tightest sphere-packing properties. The symbol and bit error probability performance of this set is compared to other two-dimensional signal sets that have been investigated in the literature, and is shown to be slightly superior from an average power standpoint. The paper concludes with a comparison of all of these signal sets from the standpoint of the factors listed above.

Pulsed plasma microthruster for synchronous meteorological satellite /SMS/

Two completely self contained variable thrust flight prototype plasma propulsion systems using solid teflon as propellant were designed, built and laboratory tested. The impulse bit amplitude of each thruster is 25 micro lb-sec. Impulse bits can be provided at rates varying from 50 ppm to 110 ppm. The total impulse capability is 400 lb-sec. Only 23 watts of bus power are required at maximum pulse rate. The system was subjected and passed the required vibration schedule and thermal vacuum test after a minor change in capacitor end face material. A 13 million discharge life test of the system was subsequently performed.

Implementation of digital filters for minimum quantization errors

In this paper a technique is developed for choosing programing forms and bit configurations for digital filters that minimize the quantization errors. The technique applies to digital filters operating in fixed-point arithmetic in either open-loop or closed-loop systems, and is implemented by a digital computer program that is based on a digital simulation of the system. As an output the program gives the programing form required for minimum quantization errors, the total bit configuration required in the filter, and the location of the binary decimal point at each quantizer within the filter.

Airoscope command system

A PCM telemetry command system is presented having a capacity of 256 unique commands, an end-to-end actuation time of less than 250 milliseconds, and an address plus complementary command code to provide security against the acceptance of anything but intended commands. The system consists of a ground-based encoder and a balloon-borne decoder, both built using low-current drain, high reliability CMOS logic elements. Commands are normally issued by a simple switch closure to +5VDC on the appropriate input line, however as a backup mode, the 8-bit command may be entered manually on 8 toggle switches and executed via a SEND button. In any case, the command is then serialized into a PCM bit stream and sent via a P-Band radio link to the DECODER aloft. All 256 outputs from the DECODER are buffered through drivers and thus may be used to drive CMOS, TTL, or DTL logic.
