Gain measurements of the Ca-Xe charge exchange system

Charge-exchange-pumped Ca(+) was studied for possible positive laser gain at 370.6 and 315.9 nm using an Xe MPD arc as the Xe(+) source. The present paper describes the MPD arc, the calcium injection system, the diagnostics for gain, and spontaneous emission measurements and results. No positive gain measurements were observed. A small Xe-Ca charge exchange cross section compared to He-metal laser systems charge exchange cross sections is the most probable reason why the result was negative.

Charge exchange of metastable 2D oxygen ions with molecular oxygen - A new source of thermospheric O2/+/ ions

Reactions involving metastable ions are difficult to study in the laboratory. Much new information on these reactions has been derived from satellite measurements of aeronomic parameters. In this paper, Atmosphere Explorer D data are used to study charge exchange of metastable O(+)(2D) ions with O2. Using direct measurements of the O2 at 200 km to compute O2 densities at 300 km and supporting ionic concentrations and temperature observations, we find the rate coefficient for this reaction to be 1 + or - 0.6 times 10 to the minus 9th cu cm/sec. The process constitutes a significant source of O2(+) ions in the F2 layer at times when the N2 and O2 densities are enhanced. This finding leads to the conclusion that charge exchange with O2 must be a major sink for O(+)(2D) and an important source of O2(+) ions in the E region, because of the increase in the O2 concentration/N2 concentration ratio with decreasing altitude. The results imply that 80% of all O(+) ions formed in the E region are converted to O2(+) and that only about 20% of the metastable O(+) ions are converted into N2(+) through charge exchange with N2.

Charge exchange lifetimes for ring current ions

In view of the importance of charge exchange decay as a loss mechanism for magnetospheric ions, the paper summarizes the latest and best measurements of the physical quantities involved in the calculation of the charge exchange lifetime of the mirroring ions. The normalized atomic hydrogen distribution is presented as a function of radial distance on the basis of the Chamberlain model for a range of exobase temperatures and for various combinations of satellite particles. Cross section measurements for various ions in the energy range 1 keV to 200 keV are summarized in the form of normalized charge exchange lifetimes. The equatorial lifetimes can be determined for any of these ions at a specific energy and L-value.

Three-dimensional radiative exchange factors for nongray, nondiffuse surfaces

A computer program using a variation of the Monte Carlo method was developed to predict radiative exchange factors in three-dimensional configurations with curved surfaces. The model allows for arbitrary emission, absorption, and reflection characteristics and for radiation exchange between surfaces as well as external irradiation through openings. It was shown that exchange factors can be determined efficiently by using the normal Monte Carlo method for closed configurations and/or high surface emissivities, while energy partitioning is vastly superior in the case of open configurations and/or low surface emissivities. Comparison with some experiments performed on the Space Shuttle heat rejection system demonstrates the model's accuracy as well as its superiority over a simplified diffuse-surface analysis, which requires similar amounts of computer time.

Active heat exchange system development for latent heat thermal energy storage

Various active heat exchange concepts were identified from among three generic categories: scrapers, agitators/vibrators and slurries. The more practical ones were given a more detailed technical evaluation and an economic comparison with a passive tube-shell design for a reference application (300 MW sub t storage for 6 hours). Two concepts were selected for hardware development: (1) a direct contact heat exchanger in which molten salt droplets are injected into a cooler counterflowing stream of liquid metal carrier fluid, and (2) a rotating drum scraper in which molten salt is sprayed onto the circumference of a rotating drum, which contains the fluid salt is sprayed onto the circumference of a rotating drum, which contains the fluid heat sink in an internal annulus near the surface. A fixed scraper blade removes the solidified salt from the surface which was nickel plated to decrease adhesion forces. In addition to improving performance by providing a nearly constant transfer rate during discharge, these active heat exchanger concepts were estimated to cost at least 25% less than the passive tube-shell design.

Active heat exchange system development for latent heat thermal energy storage

Alternative mechanizations of active heat exchange concepts were analyzed for use with heat of fusion Phase Change Materials (PCM's) in the temperature range of 250 C to 350 C for solar and conventional power plant applications. Over 24 heat exchange concepts were reviewed, and eight were selected for detailed assessment. Two candidates were chosen for small-scale experimentation: a coated tube and shell that exchanger, and a direct contact reflux boiler. A dilute eutectic mixture of sodium nitrate and sodium hydroxide was selected as the PCM from over fifty inorganic salt mixtures investigated. Preliminary experiments with various tube coatings indicated that a nickel or chrome plating of Teflon or Ryton coating had promise of being successful. An electroless nickel plating was selected for further testing. A series of tests with nickel-plated heat transfer tubes showed that the solidifying sodium nitrate adhered to the tubes and the experiment failed to meet the required discharge heat transfer rate of 10 kW(t). Testing of the reflux boiler is under way.

The exchange of infrared radiative energy in the troposphere

On the basis of an atmospheric condition of a six-layer general circulation model of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the spatial and the spectral partition of the long-wave radiation energy exchange in the model atmosphere is investigated and its implications are discussed. It is found that most of the energy is exchanged between adjacent layers and through the wings of strong lines. The strong line approximation is found to be a good approximation for water vapor transmittance. Cooling to space, however, is found to be a poor approximation for the total cooling rate. Both the strong line and cooling to space approximation are discussed in the content of the energy exchange findings.

Heat-Exchanger Method of Crystal Growth

Large crystals of silicon are grown from melt, in either vacuum or pressurized atmosphere, without moving crucible, furnace, or anything else. Seed crystal is mounted on helium-cooled heat exchanger, which prevents seed from melting when furnace melts rest of silicon material in crucible; heat exchanger draws off heat from melt so that a solid ingot grows outward from seed in a regular crystal structure. Bottom of crucible is insulated so that heat exchanger cools only seed.

Analysis of capacitive heat exchangers, part 1

Governing equations are developed for a simple capacitive heat exchanger. This type of heat exchanger consists of hot spherical particles falling through an ascending cold gas stream. The assumptions made in deriving the continuity, momentum and energy equations are clearly stated. The analysis yields a system of first order, ordinary, nonlinear equations which form a complex boundary value problem. The method of solution is presented together with a comparison between the performance of capacitive heat exchangers and conventional counter flow ones.

Transport, charge exchange and loss of energetic heavy ions in the earth's radiation belts - Applicability and limitations of theory

Computer simulations of processes which control the relative abundances of ions in the trapping regions of geospace are compared with observations from discriminating ion detectors. Energy losses due to Coulomb collisions between ions and exospheric neutrals are considered, along with charge exchange losses and internal charge exchanges. The time evolution of energetic ion fluxes of equatorially mirroring ions under radial diffusion is modelled to include geomagnetic and geoelectric fluctutations. Limits to the validity of diffusion transport theory are discussed, and the simulation is noted to contain provisions for six ionic charge states and the source effect on the radiation belt oxygen ion distributions. Comparisons are made with ion flux data gathered on Explorer 45 and ISEE-1 spacecraft and results indicate that internal charge exchanges cause the radiation belt ion charge state to be independent of source charge rate characteristics, and relative charge state distribution is independent of the radially diffusive transport rate below the charge state redistribution zone.

The role of charge exchange in the solar wind absorption by Venus

The amount of solar wind absorbed because of charge exchange processes in the dayside ionosheath of Venus is calculated. The calculations suggest the existence of a lower limiting ionopause altitude, below which all solar wind particles are removed from the flow by charge exchange. The cold, slow ions resulting from this interaction are thought to play an important role in building the magnetic barrier observed just outside the ionopause and in creating the dayside 'mantle' and downstream 'penumbra' regions. The total absorption caused by charge exchange is typically 2-5%, although when the solar wind dynamic pressure is very high, it can reach 16%.

A comparison of experimental and computer model results on the charge-exchange plasma flow from a 30 cm mercury ion thruster

Ion thrusters can be used in a variety of primary and auxiliary space-propulsion applications. A thruster produces a charge-exchange plasma which can interact with various systems on the spacecraft. The propagation of the charge-exchange plasma is crucial in determining the interaction of that plasma with the spacecraft. This paper compares experimental measurements with computer model predictions of the propagation of the charge-exchange plasma from a 30 cm mercury ion thruster. The plasma potentials, and ion densities, and directed energies are discussed. Good agreement is found in a region upstream of, and close to, the ion thruster optics. Outside of this region the agreement is reasonable in view of the modeling difficulties.

Heat-Exchanger Computational Procedure For Temperature-Dependent Fouling

Computer program predicts heat-exchanger performance under variety of conditions. Program provides rapid means of calculating distribution of fluid and wall temperatures, fuel deposit formation, and pressure losses at various locations in heat exchanger. Developed for use with heat exchanger that vaporizes fuel prior to fuel ignition; other applications possible.

Inclusion of exact exchange in the noniterative partial-differential-equation method of electron-molecule scattering - Application to e-N2

The noniterative partial-differential-equation (PDE) approach to electron-molecule scattering of Onda and Temkin (1983) is modified to account for the effects of exchange explicitly. The exchange equation is reduced to a set of inhomogeneous equations containing no integral terms and solved noniteratively in a difference form; a method for propagating the solution to large values of r is described; the changes in the polarization potential of the original PDE method required by the inclusion of exact static exchange are indicated; and the results of computations for e-N2 scattering in the fixed-nuclei approximation are presented in tables and graphs and compared with previous calculations and experimental data. Better agreement is obtained using the modified PDE method.

Criteria for scaling heat exchangers to miniature size

The purpose of this work is to highlight the particular aspects of miniature heat exchangers performance and to determine an appropriate design approach. A thermodynamic analysis is performed to express the generated entropy as a function of material and geometric characteristics of the heat exchangers. This expression is then used to size miniature heat exchangers.

Heat transfer and pressure drop performance of a finned-tube heat exchanger proposed for use in the NASA Lewis Altitude Wind Tunnel

A segment of the heat exchanger proposed for use in the NASA Lewis Altitude Wind Tunnel (AWT) facility has been tested under dry and icing conditions. The heat exchanger has the largest pressure drop of any component in the AWT loop. It is therefore critical that its performance be known at all conditions before the final design of the AWT is complete. The heat exchanger segment is tested in the NASA Lewis Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) in order to provide an icing cloud environment similar to what will be encountered in the AWT. Dry heat transfer and pressure drop data are obtained and compared to correlations available in the literature. The effects of icing sprays on heat transfer and pressure drop are also investigated.

Aeorodynamic characteristics of an air-exchanger system for the 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel at Ames Research Center

A 1/50-scale model of the 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel at Ames Research Center was used to study various air-exchange configurations. System components were tested throughout a range of parameters, and approximate analytical relationships were derived to explain the observed characteristics. It is found that the efficiency of the air exchanger could be increased (1) by adding a shaped wall to smoothly turn the incoming air downstream, (2) by changing to a contoured door at the inlet to control the flow rate, and (3) by increasing the size of the exhaust opening. The static pressures inside the circuit then remain within the design limits at the higher tunnel speeds if the air-exchange rate is about 5% or more. Since the model is much smaller than the full-scale facility, it is not possible to completely duplicate the tunnel, and it will be necessary to measure such characteristics as flow rate and tunnel pressures during implementation of the remodeled facility. The aerodynamic loads estimated for the inlet door and for nearby walls are also presented.

Development of a prototype automated on-orbit contact heat exchanger

An automated contact heat exchanger is being developed for use aboard the manned Space Station, serving as an interface heat exchanger between the pressurized module internal thermal buses and the central external thermal bus. The concept makes use of an array of flattened, thin-walled, flexible tubes that expand or contract to make or break the thermal connection as the internal pressure changes. Because of its simplicity, it permits on-orbit assembly by the remote manipulator system, thus eliminating the need for expensive EVA to make connections. A design methodology based on stress and thermal analyses has been developed and used to perform trade-offs between performance and cost, and to optimize design parameters. Simple verification tests have been performed to confirm the stress analysis model. Two conceptual variants of the contact heat exchanger are described, each designed for a 25 kW total heat load and a minimum uniform heat flux of 2.15 W/sq cm.
