Experimental evaluation of 150-millimeter bore ball bearing to 3 million DN using either solid or drilled balls

Seven 150-mm bore ball bearings were run under 8900 Newton (2000 lb) thrust load at speeds from 6670 to 20,000 rpm (1 to 3 million DN). Four of the bearings had conventional solid balls and three bearing had drilled (cylindrically hollow) balls with 50 percent mass reduction. The bearings were under-race cooled and slot-lubricated with Type 2 ester oil at flow rates from 4.35 to 5.80 liters per minute (1.15 to 1.57 gal min). Friction torque and temperatures were measured on all bearings. No significant difference in torque was noted, between the solid and drilled ball bearings. One bearing of each type was rerun at 17,800 Newtons (4000 lb) thrust load. The solid ball bearings performed satisfactorily at 3 million DN. However, at about 2 million DN the drilled ball bearing experienced a broken ball and cracks appeared in two other balls as the result of flexure fatigue. Metallurgical examination of the cracked balls indicated a brittle structure in the bore of the drilled balls.

ATS-F COMSAT millimeter wave propagation experiment.

Description of the transmitting and receiving system configurations to be used in an ATS-F propagation experiment designed to gather data on the attenuation of satellite uplink signals (at approximately 13.2 and 17.8 GHz) due to atmospheric hydrometeors (mostly rain). The data will be used for statistical determination of system power margins required for operational communications systems at frequencies above 10 GHz. A secondary analysis will study site diversity as a means of reducing the required system margins. A spacecraft transponder receives signals from 15 dual-frequency ground transmitter stations and retransmits these signals to a central ground receiving terminal at a frequency of 4 GHz.

Millimeter wavelength propagation studies

Diversity data obtained using the ATS-5 satellite and available BTL data were compared with optimum diversity gain predictions. This comparison indicates that terminal spacings exceeding 8 km result in values of diversity gain within 1.5 dB of the optimum. The thunderstorm cell modeling technique for predicting attenuation and diversity gain statistics was extended to include ellipsoidal cell models. A three rain gage method for the measurement of cell size, ellipticity, and orientation was developed.

Polarization of solar active regions at 3.5 millimeter wavelength

A study of the circular polarization structure of solar active regions has been made from data obtained at 3.5 mm wavelength, using the 36-ft-diam radio telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Kitt Peak, Arizona. The angular resolution of the telescope at this wavelength is 1.2 min. All important active regions observed at 3.5 mm are bipolar in nature; the degree of polarization ranges from 1 to about 2%. These oppositely polarized components correspond with the Mt. Wilson magnetic regions of opposite polarity; the line of zero polarization delineates the neutral line between the regions of opposite polarity on magnetograms. The longitudinal magnetic fields at the level of 3.5-mm emission computed from the degree of polarization are found to be several hundred gauss.

Cosmic background radiation at 1.32 millimeters

The R(2) line of the 3874 A band of interstellar CN toward zeta Oph was measured. An equivalent width of 0.120 mA implying an R(2)-R(1) rotational temperature of about 3.1 K was observed. Taking into account also earlier observations, it is found that the R(2) equivalent width is about 0.089 mA. The results imply a temperature of about 2.9 K for the cosmic background radiation at 1.32 mm.

1-millimeter continuum radiation from Orion Molecular Cloud 2

The 1-mm continuum flux from Orion Molecular Cloud 2 (OMC-2), measured with a 1-inch beam, is found to be 0.05 plus or minus 0.01 of that from the Becklin-Neugebauer/Kleinmann-Low (BN/KL) complex. This implies that the average density of dust within OMC-2 is about an order of magnitude less than within the BN/KL region.

Hollow-cylinder waveguide isolators for use at millimeter wavelengths

A semiconductor waveguide isolator consisting of a hollow column of a semiconductor mounted coaxially is considered in a circular waveguide in a longitudinal dc magnetic field. An elementary and physical analysis based on the excitation of plane waves in the guide and a more rigorous mode matching analysis are presented. These theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results for an InSb isolator at 94GHz and 75 K.

Operating characteristics of 120-millimeter-bore ball bearings at 3 million DN

A parametric study was performed with split inner-race 120-mm-bore angular-contact ball bearings at a speed of 25,000 rpm (3 million DN) at initial contact angles of 20 deg and 24 deg. Provisions were made for outer- and inner-race cooling and for injection of lubricant into the bearing through a number of radial holes in the split inner-race of the bearing. Oil flow and coolant rate to the bearing was controlled and varied for a total up to approximately 3.2 gal/min. Bearing temperature was found to decrease as the total lubricant flow to the bearing increased. However, at intermediate flow rates temperature began to increase with increasing flow. Power consumption increased with increasing flow rate. Bearing operating temperature, differences in temperatures between the inner and outer races, and bearing power consumption can be tuned to any desirable operating requirement. Cage speed increased by not more than 2 percent with increasing oil flow to the inner race.

Performance of 75-millimeter-bore bearings using electron-beam-welded hollow balls with a diameter ratio of 1.26

An experimental investigation was performed to determine the rolling element fatigue life of electron beam-welded hollow balls with a diameter ratio (o.d./i.d.) of 1.26 and to determine the operating characteristics of bearings using these hollow balls. Similar bearings with solid balls were also tested and the data compared. The bearings were operated at shaft speeds up to 28,000 rpm with a thrust load of 2200 N (500 lb). Ball failures during the bearing tests were due to flexure fatigue. The solid and hollow ball bearings tested showed little difference in outer race temperatures and indicated the same bearing torque. The 17.5-mm (0.6875-in.) diameter balls were also tested in the five-ball fatigue tester and showed no significant difference in life when compared with the life of a solid ball.

Astronomy at sub-millimeter wavelengths

The first flight test of a gondola containing a Newtonian telescope with a 16 in. primary mirror is described. Bolometer tests were conducted along with gondola design studies, and changes were made in the mechanical system as a result. Parts of the system were rebuilt and tested, and it was found that the flight system had redundant data recording capabilities. In the total flight record, about 160 large signals were noted; about half of these appeared to have the correct shape for genuine signals, and the other were clearly noise spikes (they were large but the signal shape could not have been produced by the observation of a celestial object).

Research in millimeter wave techniques

A model 180-GHz radiometer, employing a Cassegrain feed geometry with a parabolic main reflector and a subreflector fed by a corrugated conical horn, was constructed and tested. An absorber-coated chopper is used to modulate the signal, which is down-converted in a cross-guide harmonic mixer. A 100-GHz source was used to evaluate mixer performance and to optimize system parameters. Preliminary results indicate a noise figure of approximately 20 db is being achieved. Preliminary design studies and on-going research plans are discussed.

ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment

An empirical relation for path diversity gain as a function of terminal separation distance and single site fade depth is presented. This relation is based on existing 15.3 GHz ATS-5 attenuation data and 16.0 GHz radiometric temperature data for earth-space propagation paths. Preliminary 30 GHz ATS-6 diversity data are presented and are found to agree well with this empirical relation.
