Double-sided solar cell package

In a solar cell array of terrestrial use, an improved double-sided solar cell package, consisting of a photovoltaic cell having a metallized P-contact strip and an N-contact grid, provided on opposite faces of the cell, a transparent tubular body forming an enclosure for the cell. A pedestal supporting the cell from within the enclosure comprising an electrical conductor connected with the P-contact strip provided for each face of the cell, and a reflector having an elongated reflective surface disposed in substantially opposed relation with one face of the cell for redirecting light were also included.

Life characteristics assessment of the communications technology satellite transmitter experiment package

The performance characteristics of the transmitter experiment package (TEP) aboard the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) measured during its first 2 years in orbit are presented. The TEP consists of a nominal 200 watt output stage tube (OST), a supporting power processing system (PPS), and a variable conductance heat pipe system (VCHPS). The OST, a traveling wave tube augmented with a 10 stage depressed collector has an overall saturated average efficiency of 51.5 percent and an average saturated radio frequency (rf) output power at center band frequency of 240 watts. The PPS operated with a measured efficiency of 86.5 to 88.5 percent. The VCHPS, using three pipes to conduct heat from the PPS and the OST to a 52 by 124 centimeter radiator fin, maintained the PPS baseplate temperature below 50 C for all operating conditions. The TEP performance characteristics presented include frequency response, rf output power, thermal performance, and efficiency. Communications characteristics were evaluated by using both video and audio modulated signals. On four occasions, the TEP experienced temporary thermal control system malfunctions. The anomalies were terminated safely, and the problem was investigated because of the potential for TEP damage due to the signficant temperature increases. Safe TEP operating procedures were established.

Power Extension Package (PEP) system definition extension, orbital service module systems analysis study. Volume 1: Executive summary

An array deployment assembly, power regulation and control assembly, the necessary interface, and display and control equipment comprise the power extension package (PEP) which is designed to provide increased power and duration, as well as reduce fuel cell cryogen consumption during Spacelab missions. Compatible with all currently defined missions and payloads, PEP imposes minimal weight and volume penalties on sortie missions, and can be installed and removed as needed at the launch site within the normal Orbiter turnaround cycle. The technology on which it is based consists of a modified solar electric propulsion array, standard design regulator and control equipment, and a minimally modified Orbiter design. The requirements from which PEP was derived, and the system and its performance capabilities are described. Features of the recommended project are presented.

Transistor package for high pressure applications

TO63 transistor package can operate in hydraulic oil ar pressures of 200 psi or greater without leakage failure if it is reinforced by alumina disk brazed to cap and terminals. This inexpensive modification has been used successfully on power transistors in hydraulic circulating-pump assemblies for Space Shuttle orbiter and should be effective in other pressurized environments, such as in oil exploration equipment.

Developing experiment instrument packages

Ground-Support Equipment (GSE) system supports development, calibration, and testing of experiment packages. It is also used for "quick look" processing and in-progress data analysis. User interacts with incoming telemetry data, performs computations, and controls execution of procedures using versatile Experiment Command Interactive Language (ECIL). Program is implemented many ways with minimal modification. It is written in MARCO II and FORTRAN for DEC PDP-11/34 using the RSX-11M operating system.

The work request system of a NASA Q1 package

A computer package is described which can be used to track any type of work that is controlled on the basis of work requests and purchase orders/contracts. Run on any NASA Ql, using floppy disks only, the system can handle about 1,200 requests per year, and provides performance and summary reports for management. The milestones tracked at Goddard are described as well as directions for installing the system. Sample reports and operator instructions are included.

Space Shuttle power extension package

A modification kit for the Space Transportation System (STS) Orbiter is proposed to provide more power and mission duration for payloads. The power extension package (PEP), a flexible-substrate solar array deployed on the Space Shuttle Orbiter remote manipulator system, can provide as much as 29 kW total power for durations of 10 to 48 days. The kit is installed only for those flights which require enhanced power or duration. The PEP is made possible by development of the flexible-substrate array technology and, in itself, contributes to the technology base for the use of large area solar cells. Modifications to the Orbiter thermal control and life support systems to improve heat balance and to reduce consumables are proposed. The changes consist of repositioning the Orbiter forward radiators and replacing the lithium hydroxide scrubber with a regenerable solid amine.
