A report of the physiological, psychological, and bacteriological aspects of 20 days in full pressure suits, 20 days at 27,000 feet on 100 percent oxygen, and 34 days of confinement, parts I, II, III

The study was designed to validate the 100% oxygen (258 mmHg) gaseous environment for 20 days with 7 days pre and post run evaluations. Studies include: renal and pulmonary function, retinal vascular changes, rather extensive blood work, nutrition, metabolic and water balance, bacteriological flora alterations, psychological manifestations, and full pressure suit and personal hygiene evaluations. While certain significant psychological alterations were observed, the physiological studies disclosed no significant variations from normal values. The atmosphere was well tolerated; however, 20 days constant full pressure suit wear posed some special problems.

Coordination and establishment of centralized facilities and services of the University of Alaska ERTS survey of the Alaskan environment

The author has identified the following significant results. The objective of this project is to provide a focus for the entire University of Alaska ERTS-1 effort (12 projects covering 10 disciplines and involving 8 research institutes and science departments). Activities have been concentrated on the implementation of the project's three primary functions: (1) coordination and management of the U of A ERTS-1 program, including management of the flow of data and data products; (2) acquisition, installation, test, operation, and maintanence of centralized facilities for processing ERTS-1, aircraft, and ground truth data; and (3) development of photographic and digital techniques for processing and interpreting ERTS-1 and aircraft data. With minor exceptions these three functions are now well-established and working smoothly.

Behavioral technology and its application to fire toxicology research

The application of behavioral technology to the toxicity testing of pyrolysis/combustion (P/C) products is discussed and two categories of behavioral tests commonly employed in fire toxicology programs are reviewed. Data are presented from a comparison of carbon monoxide (CO) induced incapacitation in rats performing in a rotating wheel or under a Sidmon free-operant schedule of shock avoidance. Rats performing in the rotating wheel were behaviorally incapacitated at CO concentrations and carboxyhemoglobin levels significantly lower than those which incapacitated operant avoidance animals. It is concluded that different measures of behavioral incapacitation may vary since incapacitation is a function of the particular toxic mechanism at work and the behavioral requirements of the specific task employed in the test procedure.

The start-up of a gas turbine engine using compressed air tangentially fed onto the blades of the basic turbine

The use of compressed air was suggested to increase the reliability and motor lifetime of a gas turbine engine. Experiments were carried out and the results are shown in the form of the variation in circumferential force as a function of the entry angle of the working jet onto the turbine blade. The described start-up method is recommended for use with massive rotors.

Modeling of pressure-induced far-infrared absorption spectra Molecular hydrogen pairs

Meyer et al. (1985) have calculated the accurate induced dipole moment function of H2-H2 from first principles, using highly correlated wave functions for the first time in such work. The present paper is concerned with the collision-induced translational-rotational absorption coefficient for molecular hydrogen pairs, taking into account computations on the basis of the fundamental theory considered by Meyer et al. Data have been obtained for temperatures in the range from 40 to 300 K. Criteria are developed for choosing among various model line shapes. It is found that certain models are capable of approximating the quantum profiles closely, with rms errors of only a few percent.

A high-precision finite element method for shock-tube calculations

A two-pass explicit scheme is developed in order to exploit some of the capabilities of finite difference modeling (FDM) for finite element modeling (FEM), which offers the opportunity to account for any type of geometry in fluid flow modeling. Features of the first-order upwind and the Lax-Wendroff high precision explicit finite difference algorithms are reviewed. A flux limiter is developed for FEM to serve as an analog for the single limiter function which has been defined for the various FDMs. It is shown that an antidiffusive limiter must be introduced into the weighting function which normally multiplies the time-derivative term in the variational equation. The two-pass scheme which results is demonstrated to be the equivalent of FDMs with five-point support. However, the present scheme is valid only for one-dimensional calculations and linear shape functions for shock tube flow phenomena. Further work is required for its use with nonlinear hyperbolic systems.

Meteoritic basalts: The nakhlites, their parental magmas, cooling rates, and equivalents on Earth

Field study in northern Ontario was planned to compare cumulate rocks reported in the literature with the nakhlites in order to study the crystallization rates of the nakhlites and their possible geological settings. Experimental studies have progressed slowly because of the demands of the field work and teaching. The furnace is fully functional, and its thermocouple and oxygen sensor cells are functional and calibrated.

3-D inelastic analysis methods for hot section components. Volume 2: Advanced special functions models

This Annual Status Report presents the results of work performed during the third year of the 3-D Inelastic Analysis Methods for Hot Sections Components program (NASA Contract NAS3-23697). The objective of the program is to produce a series of computer codes that permit more accurate and efficient three-dimensional analyses of selected hot section components, i.e., combustor liners, turbine blades, and turbine vanes. The computer codes embody a progression of mathematical models and are streamlined to take advantage of geometrical features, loading conditions, and forms of material response that distinguish each group of selected components.

Frequency response of electrochemical cells

Impedance concepts can be applied to the analysis of battery electrodes, yielding information about the structure of the electrode and the processes occurring in the electrode. Structural parameters such as the specific area (surface area per gram of electrode) can be estimated. Electrode variables such as surface overpotential, ohmic losses, and diffusion limitations may be studied. Nickel and cadmium electrodes were studied by measuring the ac impedance as a function of frequency, and the specific areas that were determined were well within the range of specific areas determined from BET measurements. Impedance spectra were measured for the nickel and cadmium electrodes, and for a 20 A-hr NiCd battery as functions of the state of charge. More work is needed to determine the feasibility of using frequency response as a nondestructive testing technique for batteries.

Parameter identification for nonlinear aerodynamic systems

Work continues on frequency analysis for transfer function identification, both with respect to the continued development of the underlying algorithms and in the identification study of two physical systems. Some new results of a theoretical nature were recently obtained that lend further insight into the frequency domain interpretation of the research. Progress in each of those areas is summarized. Although not related to the system identification problem, some new results were obtained on the feedback stabilization of linear time lag systems.

Nickel hydrogen battery expert system

The Hubble Telescope Battery Testbed at MSFC uses the Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) Battery Expert System (NICBES-2) which supports the evaluation of performance of Hubble Telescope spacecraft batteries and provides alarm diagnosis and action advice. NICBES-2 provides a reasoning system along with a battery domain knowledge base to achieve this battery health management function. An effort is summarized which was used to modify NICBES-2 to accommodate Nickel Hydrogen (NiH2) battery environment now in MSFC testbed. The NICBES-2 is implemented on a Sun Microsystem and is written in SunOS C and Quintus Prolog. The system now operates in a multitasking environment. NICBES-2 spawns three processes: serial port process (SPP); data handler process (DHP); and the expert system process (ESP) in order to process the telemetry data and provide the status and action advice. NICBES-2 performs orbit data gathering, data evaluation, alarm diagnosis and action advice and status and history display functions. The adaptation of NICBES-2 to work with NiH2 battery environment required modification to all of the three component processes.

Neutron energy determination with a high-purity germanium detector

Two areas that are related to planetary gamma-ray spectrometry are investigated. The first task was the investigation of gamma rays produced by high-energy charged particles and their secondaries in planetary surfaces by means of thick target bombardments. The second task was the investigation of the effects of high-energy neutrons on gamma-ray spectral features obtained with high-purity Ge-detectors. For both tasks, as a function of the funding level, the experimental work was predominantly tied to that of other researchers, whenever there was an opportunity to participate in bombardment experiments at large or small accelerators for charged particles.

PDF approach for compressible turbulent reacting flows

The objective of the present work is to develop a probability density function (pdf) turbulence model for compressible reacting flows for use with a CFD flow solver. The probability density function of the species mass fraction and enthalpy are obtained by solving a pdf evolution equation using a Monte Carlo scheme. The pdf solution procedure is coupled with a compressible CFD flow solver which provides the velocity and pressure fields. A modeled pdf equation for compressible flows, capable of capturing shock waves and suitable to the present coupling scheme, is proposed and tested. Convergence of the combined finite-volume Monte Carlo solution procedure is discussed, and an averaging procedure is developed to provide smooth Monte-Carlo solutions to ensure convergence. Two supersonic diffusion flames are studied using the proposed pdf model and the results are compared with experimental data; marked improvements over CFD solutions without pdf are observed. Preliminary applications of pdf to 3D flows are also reported.

Macroscopic electric charge separation during hypervelocity impacts: Potential implications for planetary paleomagnetism

The production of transient magnetic fields by hypervelocity meteoroid impact has been proposed to possibly explain the presence of paleomagnetic fields in certain lunar samples as well as across broader areas of the lunar surface. In an effort to understand the lunar magnetic record, continued experiments at the NASA Ames Vertical Gun Range allow characterizing magnetic fields produced by the 5 km/s impacts of 0.32-0.64 cm projectiles over a broad range of impact angles and projectile/target compositions. From such studies, another phenomenon has emerged, macroscopic electric charge separation, that may have importance for the magnetic state of solid-body surfaces. This phenomenon was observed during explosive cratering experiments, but the magnetic consequences of macroscopic electric charge separation (as opposed to plasma production) during explosion and impact cratering have not, to our knowledge, been explored before now. It is straightforward to show that magnetic field production due to this process may scale as a weakly increasing function of impactor kinetic energy, although more work is needed to precisely assess the scaling dependence. The original intent of our experiments was to assess the character of purely electrostatic signals for comparison with inferred electrostatic noise signals acquired by shielded magnetic sensors buried within particulate dolomite targets. The results demonstrated that electrostatic noise does affect the magnetic sensors but only at relatively short distances (less than 4 cm) from the impact point (our magnetic studies are generally performed at distances greater than approximately 5.5 cm). However, to assess models for magnetic field generation during impact, measurements are needed of the magnetic field as close to the impact point as possible; hence, work with an improved magnetic sensor design is in progress. In this paper, we focus on electric charge separation during hypervelocity impacts as a potential transient magnetic field production mechanism in its own right.

The selective use of functional optical variables in the control of forward speed

Previous work on the perception and control of simulated vehicle speed has examined the contributions of optical flow rate (angular visual speed) and texture, or edge rate (frequency of passing terrain objects or markings) on the perception and control of forward speed. However, these studies have not examined the ability to selectively use edge rate or flow rate. The two studies presented here show that this ability is far greater for pilots than non-pilots, as would be expected since pilots must control vehicular speed over a variety of altitudes where flow rates change independently of forward speed. These studies also show that this ability to selectively use these variables is linked to the visual contextual information about the relative validity (linkage with speed) of the two variables. Subjective judgment data also indicated that awareness of altitude and ground texture density did not mediate ground speed awareness.

The statolith compartment in Chara rhizoids contains carbohydrate and protein

In contrast to higher plants, the alga Chara has rhizoids with single membrane-bound compartments that function as statoliths in gravity perception. Previous work has demonstrated that these statoliths contain barium sulfate crystals. In this study, we show that statoliths in Chara rhizoids react with a Coomassie Brilliant Blue cytochemical stain for proteins. While statoliths did not react with silver methenamine carbohydrate cytochemistry, the monoclonal antibody CCRC-M2, which is against a carbohydrate (sycamore-maple rhamnogalacturonan I), labeled the statolith compartment. These results demonstrate that in addition to barium sulfate, statoliths in Chara rhizoids have an organic matrix that consists of protein and carbohydrate moieties. Since the statoliths were silver methenamine negative, the carbohydrate in this compartment could be a 3-linked polysaccharide. CCRC-M2 also labeled Golgi cisternae, Golgi-associated vesicles, apical vesicles, and cell walls in the rhizoids. The specificity of CCRC-M2 immunolabeling was verified by several control experiments, including the demonstration that labeling was abolished when the antibody was preabsorbed with its antigen. Since in this and a previous study (John Z. Kiss and L. Andrew Staehelin, American Journal of Botany 80: 273-282, 1993) antibodies against higher plant carbohydrates crossreacted with cell walls of Chara in a specific manner, Characean algae may be a useful model system in biochemical and molecular studies of cell walls.

Modeling and simulation for space medicine operations: preliminary requirements considered

The NASA Space Medicine program is now developing plans for more extensive use of high-fidelity medical simulation systems. The use of simulation is seen as means to more effectively use the limited time available for astronaut medical training. Training systems should be adaptable for use in a variety of training environments, including classrooms or laboratories, space vehicle mockups, analog environments, and in microgravity. Modeling and simulation can also provide the space medicine development program a mechanism for evaluation of other medical technologies under operationally realistic conditions. Systems and procedures need preflight verification with ground-based testing. Traditionally, component testing has been accomplished, but practical means for "human in the loop" verification of patient care systems have been lacking. Medical modeling and simulation technology offer potential means to accomplish such validation work. Initial considerations in the development of functional requirements and design standards for simulation systems for space medicine are discussed.
